Bryce T. Burton
Bryce T. Burton, 63, of 524 Wayne St., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Twinbrook Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 24, 1934, in Durham, N.C., son of the late Charlie V. and Blanche Hayth Burton.
Mr. Burton was a graduate of Person County High School in Roxboro, N.C. He worked for Lord Corp., where he had been a department manager, for 20 years. He then worked for the Erie Water Authority, where he monitored the meter board readings.
Mr. Burton formerly sang in a quartet with the Erie Harmonizers and with the men's chorus at Shiloh Baptist Church. He enjoyed bowling and golfing.
He was preceded in death by a son, at birth; and four brothers, Charlie Burton Jr. and Leon, William and George Burton.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel B. Burton; two sisters, Janie Parker and Bertie Peoples, both of Bahama, N.C.; three brothers, Matthew Burton and his wife, Willie Mae, and Joseph Burton and his wife, Malbe, all of Bahama, and Mark Burton of Erie; four stepchildren, Jeffery Coleman and his wife, Patricia, of Erie, Robert Mickens and his wife, Marsha, of Dayton, Ohio, Kevin Stanton and his wife, Stacie, of Jackson, N.C., and Natasha Stanton of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Burton Funeral Home, 602 W. 10th St., Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 E. 5th St., Wednesday at 1 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Clifton McNair.
Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2115 W. 38th St., Erie, PA 16508; or to Twinbrook Medical Center, 3805 Field St., Erie, PA 16511.

Vida Meeder
RIPLEY, N.Y. - Vida Meeder, 67, West Side Hill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Hamot Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Mathews Funeral Home, 104 W. Main Road, Ripley.

Robert E. Fling
Robert E. Fling, 50, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the residence of his mother, 410 W. Avonia Road, Fairview.
Mr. Fling was born in Erie, Nov. 30, 1947, a son of Anne Hess Fling of Fairview and the late Gene V. Fling. He is a former resident of Kentucky and had lived there for the past 10 years before returning to Fairview in December 1997.
Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Shawn Fling of Erie; a sister, Sheri Yaple and her husband Gerald of Fairview; two brothers, William Fling and his wife Peggy of Pittsburgh, and Gene C. "Bucky" Fling and his wife Kathleen of Millcreek; his maternal grandmother, Anne Hess of Erie; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home Inc., West, 536 W. 10th, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The service will be private.
Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Mildred Mains Garnon
GIRARD - Mildred Mains Garnon, 78, of Summer Place, Girard, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at New England Sinai Hospital, Stoughton, Mass., following a brief illness.
She was born in Berberton, Ohio, Oct. 10, 1919, a daughter of the late Claude and Mary Ashbaugh Mains. She had worked for Saint Vincent Health Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse for 31 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Girard. She enjoyed sewing and crafts.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Fred Garnon Sr.; two sons, Fred Garnon Jr. and his wife Jackie and David Garnon and his wife Mardi, both of Erie; a daughter, Karen Madrigale and her husband Gilbert of Bridgewater, Mass.; a brother, William Mains of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Hazel Pavkov and her husband Milan of Barberton; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Robert A. Jaworowicz Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard, Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there Tuesday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Pamela Gardner will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Girard, 48 Main St. East, Girard, PA, 16417.
Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Irene Buterbaugh Tofel Osborne
Irene C. Buterbaugh Tofel Osborne, 60, formerly of Erie, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, in Clinton, Okla.
She was born in Indiana, Pa., May 15, 1937, daughter of Boyd Denver Buterbaugh of Erie and the late Agnes Gregg Buterbaugh. Mrs. Osborne lived in Erie for most of her life, moving to Oklahoma in September 1997. She worked at General Electric Co. as a machine operator for 23 years, retiring in 1997. She was a former member of the Pulaski Club. She enjoyed traveling and bingo.
She is survived by her husband, John Osborne, whom she marriage in September 1997; four daughters, Catherine Patron of Oklahoma and her husband Ramon, and Norma Ochrang and her husband David, Kimberly Bisbee and Tina Schubert, all of Erie; two sons, Richard Hartleb of Oklahoma and Don Schubert of Erie; five stepdaughters, Kathy Whitford and her husband, Dennis, Sandy Shreve and her husband, Donald, Barbara Winkelman and Michelle "Miki" Costello, all of Erie, and Heidi Baniszewski of Lititz and her husband, David; four sisters, Margaret Come and her husband, Frank, Dorothy Buck and her husband, Don, and Joyce Smith and her husband, Sam, all of Erie, and Helen Leslie and her husband Jim, of California; two brothers, Art Buterbaugh of Erie and Ed Buterbaugh of Marienville, Forest County, and his wife, Judy; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews.
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home East, 2607 Buffalo Road, this evening from 7 to 9 and Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held there Tuesday at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Bill Snyder of Walnut Creek Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Sandy Lake, Mercer County.

Elizabeth L. Scott
OIL CITY - Elizabeth L. (Betty) Scott, 84, formerly of 20 Scott's Lane, Oil City, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Grandview Advanced Health Services.
She was born on April 13, 1913, in Oil City, daughter of the late Mike and Betty Fekete.
Mrs. Scott and her late husband, Willard, operated Scott's Greenhouse for 28 years along with her husband's family. She also worked for the Peoples Clothing Store in Oil City for 33 years. She served as president of The Resident Council at Grandview Advanced Health Services, where she had lived since May 1994.
She was a member of the Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church; the Oil City Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, where she volunteered at the hospital snack bar for 17 years; and was a charter member of 25 years of the Cornplanter Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she held several offices before her retirement. She attended Welch's Business School in Oil City and was a member of the Morris Chapter No. 14 of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, whom she marriage on June 13, 1941, and who died in 1986; and a by a brother, William Black of Erie, in 1997.
Survivors include a son, William Scott, and his wife, Peggy, of Oil City; and three granddaughters, Kristine and Kathleen Scott, both of Charleston, S.C., and Sue Ann Scott of Pittsburgh.
At Mrs. Scott's request, her body has been donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry at the University of Pittsburgh.
No viewing or calling hours will be held. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hasson Heights Presybterian Church, with the Rev. Richard Geiger officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church, the Cornplanter Volunteer Fire Co. or the Visiting Nurse Association.
The Osenider Funeral Home, Oil City, is handling arrangements.

Ronald J. Farrell
Ronald J. Farrell, 70, of 1036 E. 27th St., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at the James A. Hales Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tampa, Fla.
He was born in Erie, Jan. 9, 1928, a son of the late Jack and Edith Borse Farrell. He owned and operated the Farrell Automotive Machine Shop for 30 years. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the East Erie Turners, the Siebenbuerger Club, the Wesleyville American Legion, and the Grandfather's Bowling League. He enjoyed flowers and animals.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph P. Farrell.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald J. Farrell II of Marenga, Ohio, and Ralph J. Farrell of Erie; a daughter, Karen Bundas of Plattsburg, N.Y.; a beloved friend, June Blossey of Erie; four brothers, Carl Farrell of Greensboro, N.C., and Manuel, Edward and Robert Farrell, all of Erie; six sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Jean) Santone, Mrs. Clarence (Irene) Swanson, Mrs. Edward (Agnes) Helsley and Rose Marie Taylor, all of Erie, Anna Sadowski of Pine Island, N.Y., and Marie Thomas of Wickatunk, N.J.; four stepdaughters, Denise Farrell Shorts, Dawn Massey and Edith Blossey, all of Erie, and Natalie Blossey of Riverview, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Brugger Home for Funerals, West 38th Street and Greengarden Boulevard, today from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 643 W. 17th St., Monday at 1 p.m.
Burial will be in Erie County Memorial Gardens.

Oliver Lawrence Mansfield
LAKE CITY - Oliver Lawrence Mansfield, 86, a long-time resident of Elk Street, Lake City, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Pleasant Ridge Manor in Girard.
He was born in Francesville, Ind., Oct. 6, 1911, a son of the late Montie and Willa Mae Dimon Mansfield. He had retired from the General Electric Co. in Erie after 30 years of service as a machinist. He was a member of the Ashtabula County Rod and Reel Association and he was a hunter and an avid fisherman. His handle on CB radio was "Retired Fisherman." He also traveled to Alaska to catch salmon, which he ten canned himself.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Floyd Mansfield.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Winifred Felton Mansfield; a daughter, Eileen Pettis of Girard; three sons, Richard Mansfield of East Springfield, Donald Mansfield of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Melvin Mansfield of Lowell, Ind.; three sisters, Donna Kreglein of Geneva, Ohio, Monna O'Conner of Ashtabula and Rose Marie Fails of Geneva; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Jean Evens Thompson Funeral Home, 11883 Main St., East Springfield, Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Charlie McClung of the Lake City Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Lake City Volunteer Fire Department, Rice Avenue, Lake City, PA, 16423.
Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield.

James F. Rettew
Erie native was county inspector in Nevada
LAUGHLIN, Nev. - James F. Rettew, 55, of Laughlin,and formerly of Erie, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
He was born in Erie, Aug. 15 1942, a son of the late D. William and Mary Elizabeth Orr Rettew. He was a graduate of Millcreek High School and attended Gannon University and Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. He was an inspector for Clark County Public Works in Nevada.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Trask Rettew of Laughlin; two daughters, Melissa Wenzler and her husband Chris of Cleveland, Ohio, and Elizabeth Rettew of State College and Erie; a sister, Elizabeth R. McLaren and her husband Harold of Erie; a brother, William Rettew and his wife Doris of Fleetwood, N.C.; a granddaughter, Madeline Wenzler; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Erie at a time to be announced.
The Burton Funeral Home, 602 W. 10th St., is handling local arrangements.
