JOHN C. NELSON SR.
John C. Nelson Sr., 68, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Dec. 12, 1930, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Ralph M. and Elizabeth Copley Nelson. He was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, and had attended the St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church, Chestnut Ridge. He was a graduate of Ramsay High School with the class of 1948. He was a veteran, having served in Italy with the U.S. Army. He had been employed for 44 years by Bell Telephone, prior to his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 446, where he held several offices, and lately served on the executive committee. He was also a life member of the Hecla Sportsmen's Club and the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Perryopolis Sons of Italy and the Elks Lodge 868, Mt. Pleasant. He was a founding member of the local St. Vincent DePaul Society. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Esther Wisnasky Nelson; a son, John C. Nelson Jr. and wife, Karen, of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Janet E. Armor and husband, Dr. David W., of Greensburg; five grandchildren, David Armor Jr., Andrew Armor, Hannah Armor, Fallon Nelson, and Garrett Nelson; a brother, Robert Nelson and wife, Mary Agnes, of Greensburg; and several nieces and a nephew. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Ryan and Marjory Gricheck. Friends will be received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Boniface R.C. Church, Chestnut Ridge, Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Simon J. Toth, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Pius X Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, with military rites accorded by the members of the American Legion Post 446. A wake service will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.

ALLAN GLENN SANDMEYER
Allan Glenn Sandmeyer, 55, of Elizabeth Township, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, in UPMC Shadyside. He was born March 13, 1944, in Greenock, and was a son of the late Edwin P. and Margaret Ginter Sandmeyer. He worked for Mechanical Engineering Operations (formerly Westinghouse), and was a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam conflict. He was a member of VFW Post 781, Irwin, and the Buena Vista Fire Co. He is survived by his wife, Janet Waldbaum Sandmeyer; a son, Allan Sandmeyer of Liberty Borough; sisters, Shirley Gilbert of Elizabeth Township and Linda Krznaric of North Huntingdon; a brother, Richard "Pete" Sandmeyer of West Newton; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Friends are welcome Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the DREW J. GILBERT FUNERAL HOME INC., Boston, Elizabeth Township. Service will be in the funeral home chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Kelly officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Elizabeth Township.

PAUL F. SPARROW
Paul F. Sparrow, of the South Hills, on Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999. Husband of the late Frances M. Sparrow. Father of Paul A. and David B. Sparrow. Grandfather of Jason Sparrow and Lauren McCallum. Great-grandfather of Connor McCallum. Services and interment private. Arrangements by LAUGHLIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Pittsburgh.

LEAH MARRIOTT STATHERS
Leah Marriott Stathers, 66, of Fayette City, on Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999. Beloved wife of James E. Stathers of Fayette City; mother of Mark A. Stathers of Pittsburgh; grandmother of Brittany Lynn Stathers of Cecil Township; and sister of Thomas Marriott of Pittsburgh and James Marriott of Charleroi. Friends will be received Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the ELEY-McCRORY FUNERAL HOME, Main Street, Fayette City, where services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment in LaFayette Memorial Park, Briar Hill.

EDWARD R. BRINER
Edward R. Briner, D.M.D., age 73, died at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg, on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999. A son of Clarence and Ada Polchinski Briner. He was born in Kecksburg on Sept. 19, 1926. After attending public school in Mt. Pleasant Township, he attended St. Vincent College, and was then graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1952. During World War II he served in the Philippines with the Army Medical Corps. He was a member of the Acme United Methodist Church. Also, he was a member of the Marion Lodge #562 of Scottdale, Valley of Pittsburgh Consistory and Syria Temple. He practiced dentistry in Norvelt for nine years, in Mt. Pleasant for 19 years, and Acme for 13 years, before retiring in 1994. Dr. Briner served on the Mt. Pleasant Township School Board during the era when the jointure with Mt. Pleasant Borough was taking place, and was board president when the present high school was built. He was very active in ham radio, being licensed as WA3TVG in 1974. For many years, he served as a director, treasurer, then president, and finally, for 21 years, as the newsletter editor for the Medical Amateur Radio Council, an organization of health professionals who are ham radio operators. In 1995, he was awarded a special achievement award at the Dayton Hamfest, the largest gathering of ham radio operators in the world. He was instrumental in the formation of a local ham club, the Laurel Highlands VHF Society. Dr. Briner made several trips to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with the Flying Dentists to do philanthropic dentistry for the indigent people residing there. He was an enthusiastic computer operator, having gotten his first in 1977, and at his passing, had been an operator of eight different computers, upgrading each time a newer model was introduced. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Hoke Briner, to whom he was married 49 years; daughters, Pamela Yothers and her husband, Dr. Mark Yothers, Dr. Patricia Briner and her husband, Bruce Shaffer; grandchildren, Jonathan Yothers, Nathaniel Shaffer and Erin Shaffer; a sister, Martha Paunovich of Kecksburg; and a brother, Clarence H. Briner Jr. of Asheville, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Vivian Bish. Viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt, with services to be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with pastors Terry Trudgen and Paul Morris co-officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 444, Mt. Morris, IL 61054-0444. Entombment will follow in the Middle Presbyterian Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post #446 of Mt. Pleasant. The Marion Lodge #562 held their service in the funeral home Monday at 7:30 p.m. Sandra L. Hoffer, funeral director.

BUDDY BRYAN
Buddy Bryan, 83, formerly of Irwin, a longtime resident of El Paso, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, in El Paso. He was born March 14, 1916, in Ford City, a son of the late Saad and Elizabeth (Aziz) Bryan. He was a self-employed businessman. Mr. Bryan was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and a member of the El Maida Shrine and Shidle Lodge #601 F&AM. He was a graduate of Ford City High School. He was a worker with Westinghouse Air Brake and a Las Cruces businessman, prior to retirement. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary (Beter) Bryan; a daughter, Barbara Whittenton and husband, Jesse, of Santa Teresa, N.M.; a son, Robert Bryan and wife, Eileen, of Morristown, N.J.; grandchildren, Kimberly Wilkie, Michelle Evans, and Cameron Bryan; a great-grandson, Robert J. Wilkie; former son-in-law, Charles Evans of El Paso, Texas; a brother, James Bryan of Dearborn, Mich.; a sister, Rose Krall of West Mifflin; several nieces and nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with Trisagion services at 8 p.m. Service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Orthodox Church in Greensburg with Father John Nosal officiating. Interment Irwin Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions to St. Michael's Orthodox Church.

FRANK A. CIPRA
Frank A. Cipra, 81, of Irwin RD1 (Lowber Road), died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at his home. He was born June 17, 1918, in Hahntown, a son of the late Frank A. and Josephine (Zarobsky) Cipra. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a plumber and steam fitter, and was a member of the Plumber and Steam Fitters Union Local #354, with 50 years of service. He was also the owner and operator of the Cipra Dairy Farm, Sewickley Township, for 40 years. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy Seabees. His memberships included: the Czechoslovakian Society of America and the American Legion, Hahntown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gloria L. (Mosso) Cipra, in 1992; two sisters, Olga Brown and Mary Jane Johns; and two brothers, Alfred and Gordon Cipra. Mr. Cipra is survived by four daughters, Cheryl Iwinski and her husband, James, of Pahrump, Nev., Laurel Scott and her husband, Norbert, of Glen Burnie, Md., Denise Basara and her husband, Nicholas, of Herminie, and Kimberly Leone and her husband, Guy, of Greensburg; a son, Frank G. Cipra, at home; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Cipra of Irwin and Roland Cipra of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a sister, Erna Sensenich of Irwin; three nieces; and his special companion, "Raven, " a black Labrador Retriever, who rode along with Frank daily. Friends received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with pastor Chuck Hildbold officiating. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park.

GEORGE DRAGHI
George Draghi, 62, of Export, on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999. Born Feb. 4, 1937, in Export, a son of the late Antonio and Amelie Callauid Draghi. He was a member of the Italian American Club, Export. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Peonoske. Surviving are a son, Michael of Greensburg; three brothers, Aldo of Slickville, Anthony and wife, Linda, of Delmont, and Eugene of Export; four sisters, Mary, and Yvonne Stimmell and husband, Sam, all of Export, Frances Mattie of Delmont, and Lorraine of Youngwood; and a grandson, Nicholas. Friends received at the EDWIN N. WOLFE FUNERAL HOME INC., Export, Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Export, with the Rev. Dismas Young as celebrant. Interment Grandview Cemetery, Export.

JAMES HARROLD ESSON
A memorial service for James Harrold Esson, late of Las Vegas, Nev., will be held at the Heritage United Methodist Church, on the Diamond, Ligonier, Saturday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m.

ARTHUR J. GRANT
Arthur J. Grant, 79, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born in Bangor, Maine, Dec. 20, 1919, and graduated from the University of Maine in 1947. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Grant earned the Bronze Star medal for his action within the 10th Armored Division of the 3rd Army. Prior to his retirement, he was the manager of International Traffic and Distribution at Kennametal Inc. He lived for many years at Stony Acre in Rector, Pa., was an accomplished pianist, enthusiastic skier, and active in his church. Also known as "Bud, " he was well-known for his happy disposition, gentle manner and thick Maine accent. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Kathleen; a son, Michael; a sister, Ann (Tornquist); and a brother, John. He is loved by, missed by, and survived by his sister, Adelaide; and five children: Sarah Crane and her husband, Charles, of Greenville, S.C., and their children, Aaron, Chara, Jonathan, and Benjamin; A.J. and his wife, Lynn, of DeKalb, Ill., and children Kyle, Katharine, and Alec; Therese "Mimi" Herman and her husband, Jim, and daughter, Annie; Timothy B. and his wife, Debbie, and his daughter, Carolyn; and McDonald "Mac" and his wife, Merriann, and their daughters, Alexandra and Marlee. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Ligonier, followed by interment in Jacksonville Cemetery, Jacksonville, Maine. Arrangements by the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Latrobe.
