Narcisa Almada
Longtime resident of East Providence

Narcisa "Nancy" Almada, 90, of Blanding Avenue, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Evergreen House Health Center.

She was the wife of the late Cesar Almada.

Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Silva) Vieira, she had lived in East Providence for 29 years. Ms. Almada was a member of the Cape Verdean Progressive Center Women's Guild. She was also a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in East Providence.

She leaves a daughter, Irene Vieira Almada Penha, of East Providence; four stepdaughters, Maria do Carmo Faial and Arlinda Santiago, both of East Providence; Nair Almada Marques and Ludi Sotto-Mayor, both in Portugal; three stepsons, Orlando Almada of East Providence, Napoleao Almada of New Bedford and Baldwin Almada in Holland; ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Mary "Bebe" Lobo, Theophile Viera and Manuel Vieira.

Her funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 23, at 8:45 a.m. from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church, North Carpenter Street. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Robert A. Fazekas
Commercial painter, involved father

Robert A. Fazekas, 45, of Willis Avenue, a commercial painter, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 23, 2004, at his home.

He was the husband of Lynn M. (Starrett) Fazekas. Born in St. Paul, Minn., he was the son of Lucille E. (Ryckman) Fazekas of Saint Paul, and the late Richard Fazekas. Mr. Fazekas had resided in Somerset before moving to Seekonk in 1989. He was a commercial painter with the District Council 35 Painters and Allied Trades Union Local 1138, Boston, for the last 18 years.

He was an avid golfer and a member of the Chernawa Golf League, North Attleboro. He was past president of the North Seekonk Little League Association; former Boy Scout Leader of Troop 7, Seekonk, and was also a former Boy Scout Troop leader in Somerset. Many people remembered him as "the salt of the earth."

Besides his wife and mother, he leaves three sons, Christopher J. Fazekas, Ryan S. Fazekas, and Andrew S. Fazekas, all at home; one brother, Russell Fazekas in Colorado; two sisters, Lo-Ann Snyderrich and Laura Halfpenny, both in Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 30 at 11 a.m. at the William W. Tripp Funeral Home, Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. Burial will follow at Seekonk Cemetery, Newman Avenue, Seekonk.

Joseph Moniz
Owned Dr. Joe's Auto Repair Shop

Joseph "Dr. Joe" Moniz, 49, of 319 Cambridge St., Fall River, formerly of Tiverton, died on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Fall River, a son of Delinda (Pontes) Moniz of Somerset and the late Manuel Moniz, he had lived in Tiverton for many years, in Connecticut for a short time, and in Westport for several years.

Mr. Moniz was an auto mechanic for many years and had owned and operated the former Dr. Joe's Auto Repair Shop in Westport.

He was a member of Our Lady of Health Parish in Fall River.

Besides his mother, he leaves a brother, William J. Moniz of Fall River; a sister, Anne Pasciak of Salem, N.H.; two nieces and two nephews.

His funeral was held on Friday, Dec. 24, from the Silva-Faria Funeral Home, Fall River, followed by a Mass in Our Lady of Health Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dialysis Center of Tiverton, 22 Hurst Lane, Tiverton, RI 02878.

Arvilla E. Waite
Retired operator for New England Telephone

Arvilla E. (Manchester) Waite, 79, of Tiverton, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004 at home with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late Carlton Waite.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Charles H. Manchester Sr. and Arvilla (Reynolds) Manchester, she was a lifelong resident of Tiverton.

Prior to her retirement she was an operator for New England Telephone in Newport.

She leaves two sons, Stephen C. Waite of Little Compton, and Allen D. Waite of Tiverton; a daughter, Leesa K. Waite of Tiverton; a brother, Edwin Manchester of Portsmouth; a sister, Thelma Sanford of Tiverton, and five grandchildren, Melissa Christ, Lindsey Barbosa, Sherrilyn Barbosa, Stephen Waite and Kyle Waite. She was the mother of the late Sheryl Waite.

Private arrangements are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, Westport.

James M. Howard III
Photographer, editor

James M. "Jerry" Howard III, 60, died on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, in Limerick, Ireland after a brief illness.

Born in New Haven, Conn., he was a son of the late James M. Howard, Jr. and the late Sarah (Seymour) Howard and stepson of Selena (Tatlock) Howard of Westport. He was thegrandson of the late Charles Seymour, president of Yale University from 1937-1950.

A graduate of the Wooster School in Connecticut, he earned a B.A. from Yale University in 1965, a M.A. in journalism from Columbia University in 1966, and a B.F.A. in photography from the Massachusetts School of Art.

He served in Vietnam as a lieutenant in Underwater Demolition Team 12 of the US Navy (an earlier formulation of the SEALS), receiving a Purple Heart after being wounded in action. He then began his work in photography and journalism.

Mr. Howard was a photographer and writer who explored the relationships between people and place for over three decades. As a journalist, essayist, and editor, he covered garden design and landscape architecture, the evolution of zoological parks and garden cemeteries, the greenway and urban gardening movements, suburban land use, and the politics of saving endangered places.

During the 1970s, he served as editor of the Weston/Wayland Town Crier. From 1980-1999, he was a co-founder of Positive Images, providing stock photography to the publishing industry. He was the founding editor of Whole Life Times, associate editor of the New Age Journal, and editor and publication manager for the City of Cambridge from 1993-97, among others. He did freelance work throughout his career, the longest service of which was to Sanctuary magazine, published by the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

In addition to his stepmother, he leaves two daughters, Sarah Howard McHugh of Westport, and Elizabeth Bradley Howard New York, N.Y.; his partner, Gail Johnston of Walthham; his wife, Margarite Bradley of Concord; three sisters, Alida Howard Woods of Ashville, N.C., Mary Carrington Howard Conklin of Warsaw, Va., and Eleanor Howard Elmer of Portsmouth.

His memorial service will be held at the Friends Meeting House in Wellesley, on Feb. 5, 2005 at 1 p.m.A memorial fund in honor of Howard will be established this winter. Arrangements in the care of Waring-Sullivan Homes of Memorial Tribute, Fall River.

Elmer H. Williams, Jr.
Leaves son in Barrington

Elmer H. (Bill) Williams, Jr., 75, of Wickford, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Orchard View Manor in East Providence. He was the husband of the late Lelia Smith Williams.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., a son of the late Elmer and Mary (Lyman) Williams, he had lived in Pelham, Albany, Syracuse, Eastchester, and Rye, N.Y. before moving to Wickford in 1990.

Mr. Williams retired in 1991 as the comptroller of the Waterfront Commission of the States of N.Y. and N.J. He was a life-long boating enthusiast, volunteering for more than 35 years with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and was an active member of the Wickford Yacht Club. He was also an avid water and snow skier.

Mr. Williams is survived by his sons, Peter Williams of Martin Avenue in Barrington and David Williams of Rutland, Vt.; his daughter, Kimberly Thomas of Los Alamos, N.M.; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Owen L. Williams and the late Mary D. Williams.

Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Kingstown Fire and Rescue Squad, 8150 Post Road, North Kingstown RI 02852 (Attn: Chief David A Murray).

Theresa Borges
Lived in Bristol 54 years

Theresa (Sousa) Borges, 77, of Manchester Street, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Silver Creek Manor. She was the wife of the late Edward R. Borges, Bristol's former fire chief.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Louis B. and Maria Augusta (Gonsalves) Sousa, she lived in Fall River until age 18, when she moved to Warren and, after five years, to Bristol. She lived in town 54 years.

Mrs. Borges was a secretary for Empire Bottling Works, and also worked for Collins and Aikman. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bristol Fire Department.

She leaves a son, Edward R. Borges Jr. of Bristol; a daughter, Linda Lou Dubois of Bristol; five grandsons, Edward, Thomas and Timothy Dubois and Edward and Peter Borges, all of Bristol; and a sister, Linda S. Digati of Bristol. She was a sister of the late Louis B. Sousa Jr., Americo Sousa and Evelyn Riley.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 17, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, State Street. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Charles R. Lawrence
Former owner of Charles Raymond Ceramic and Flowers

Lawrence R. Charles, 74, of Winthrop Street, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, in Rhode Island Hospital.

He was the husband of Marie J. (Coelho) Lawrence. They were married for 49 years.

Born in Rehoboth, the son of Mary (Deaguiar) Lawrence of East Providence and the late Joseph Lawrence, he had lived in Rehoboth for 43 years, previously living in East Providence. He worked for 27 years as owner and operator of Charles Raymond Ceramic and Flowers in East Providence, retiring in 1989. He had previously worked at Faria Florist for eight years.

He graduated from East Providence High School in 1948 and graduated from the Rittner Floral School of Design in Boston. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Charles was also a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, the Holy Ghost Brotherhood in Rehoboth and a member of the Anawan Historical Society.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by one niece, Wendy Coelho of Hawaii.

The funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 9 a.m. from the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway. A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on Taunton Avenue in Seekonk.

Burial followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.

Carlos Souza
Navy veteran of World War II, salesman

Carlos Souza of Tiverton died on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Alexandria (Wasilowski) Souza.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late Bento Souza Ferreira and the late Angelica (Cordeiro) Souza Ferriera, he was a Tiverton resident for 51 years.

He was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River and served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Souza was employed as a driver and salesman for Coca-Cola for 34 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Theresa Church in Tiverton.

Besides his wife he leaves a son, Michael Souza of Lynn, Mass.; a daughter, Stephanie Restuccia of Canajoharie, N.Y.; two sisters, Helen Arruda and Margaret Silvestre , both of Somerset; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gabriel Souza, Geraldine Borges and Mary Ferreira Souza.

His funeral will be held at Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 North Main St., Fall River at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Theresa's Church on Stafford Road, Tiverton, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Sheila C. Smith
Homecare Dept. manager at St. Anne's Hospital

Sheila C. (Crowley) Smith, 61, of Narragansett Boulevard, Portsmouth, died on Sunday Dec. 26, 2004, at home. She was the wife of Arthur D. Smith to whom she had been married for 38 years.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late John T. Crowley, and the late Louise A. (Buckley) Crowley, she was a 1960 graduate of Durfee High School, received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from UMass Amherst and a masters in gerontology from Salve Regina.

Mrs. Smith was employed as the manager of the Homecare Department at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River and was a communicant of Holy Name Church.

In addition to her husband, she leaves two daughters, Maureen E. Alldridge of Hampton, Middlesex, England, and Deborah K. Hayden of Attleboro, Mass.; two sisters, Judith C. Bolick of Framingham, Mass., and Lucia Crowley of Weymouth, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late John M. Crowley.

Her Funeral will be held on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 9 a.m. from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover Street, Fall River. Burial will be in Saint Patrick's Cemetery.

Gloria Borges
Born in St. Michael, the Azores

Gloria Borges, 92, of 282 Thames St., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at the Evergreen House Nursing Home in East Providence.

Born in St. Michael, the Azores, a daughter of the late Marcelino and Theresa Maria (Silvia) Borges, she was a housekeeper at the Metacom Manor Health Care Center in Bristol for seven years before retiring in 1984. She also worked for the former Philips Baker Rubber Company, the Kleistone Rubber Company and the Converse Rubber Company. A communicant of St. Elizabeth Church, she was a former member of the Bristol Senior Citizens.

She leaves two sisters, Irene Cardoza of Swansea and Phoebe Borges of Bristol; and a brother, Joseph "Buckey" Borges of Warren

She was a sister of the late Germain Borges, Albertina Travers, Mary Ash, and George, Ernest and David Borges.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 141 State St. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bristol.

Mary L. Piva
Retired nurse's aid, member of St. John the Baptist

Mary L. (Medeiros) Piva, 87, of New Bedford died Monday, December 20, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of John Piva.

Born in Dartmouth, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Furtado) Medieros, she had lived in New Bedford for most of her life.

Prior to retirement, she was a nurse's aid for various nursing homes in the area. She was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.

Mrs. Piva leaves six sons, Michael Piva, Robert Piva, John Piva, Stephen Piva and Joseph Piva, all of New Bedford, Eugene Piva of California; five daughters, Brenda Larguinha of Westport, Barbara Piva of New Bedford, Janice Piva of Texas, Eileen Vonicka of New Bedford and Cynthia Costa of Westport; several grandchildren, many great grandchildren, a great great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral was held from the Potter Funeral Home, Westport, on Thursday, Dec.23, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.

John Castro
Services held

Funeral services for John Castro were held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 from the Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home in Lynn, Mass., with a Funeral mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Lynnfield, Mass.

Serving as pallbearers were Jason Castro, John Hirschfeld, Vasco Castro III, Robert P. Castro, Vasco Castro IV, Joseph Castro, David Castro and Wayne Castro.

Mr. Castro, 76, of Lynnfield and formerly of Bristol, died Friday, Dec. 17, at the Bedford Administration hospital in Lynnfield. He was the husband of the late Claire J. (Warren) Castro.
