Helen Chapman

Helen E. (Cleary) Chapman, 95, of 65 Crest St. in Middletown died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late William Chapman. Born in Newport Jan. 22, 1906, she was the daughter of the late George and Hannah (Savage) Cleary.

Mrs. Chapman was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Newport.

She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth A. Conley of Middletown, granddaughters Kathleen Harvey of San Diego, Calif., and Maureen Andrew of Greene, Maine, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Helen "Jackie" Chapman and the sister of the late John Cleary, George Cleary, Joseph Cleary, Nora Sayles, Marietta Reason and Mary Fougere.

Her funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Jan. 25 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street in Newport. Burial will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Mary’s Building Fund, 12 William St., Newport, RI 02840 or to the Grand Islander Activities Fund, 333 Green End Ave., Middletown, RI 02842.

Meryl Grayson Harvie

Meryl Lorraine Grayson Harvie, 93, fifth daughter of the late Sir Henry Grayson, Baronet, and widow of Bruce Walter Harvie, of Barney Street in Newport, died Jan. 11, 2002.

Mrs. Harvie was born Jan. 12, 1909 at High Meadow in Cheshire, England. She attended the Sacred Heart Convent School in London and became an accomplished pianist. During World War II, she served as a WREN in the British Navy. Mrs. Harvey resided in Newport for 25 years and was a member of the Redwood Library and Athenaeum. Mrs. Harvie was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.

She was the sister of the late Angela Grayson Dick of Clover Patch on Bowery Street in Newport and the late Nancy Grayson Drexel of Philadelphia. She is survived by several nieces and nephews in this country and in England.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Jan. 16. Burial was private. A similar service will be held in London. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.

Roy Lawton

Roy Owen Lawton, 63, a retired captain of the Merchant Marines, of Lincoln Street in Newport, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at home. Born in Newport Jan. 11, 1939, he was the son of Gladys (Parmenter) Lawton Fritz of Middletown and the late George W. Lawton.

Capt. Lawton worked for Farrell Lines Inc. of New York, retiring in 1999 after 21 years of service through the Masters, Mates and Pilots Union. He also worked with American Export Isbrandtsen Lines for 15 years. Mr. Lawton earned all of his postgraduate and license updates at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies in Maryland. He had visited 73 countries over the course of his career. He was a graduate of Rogers High School and the Maine Maritime Academy. His family has lived in Newport for 11 generations.

Mr. Lawton volunteered for the Newport Music Festival for 20 years. He was a member of the Preservation Society of Newport County, Newport Historical Society, Save the Bay, Museum of Yachting, International Yacht Restoration School, Norman Bird Sanctuary, Council of American Master Mariners, Masonic Lodge St. John No. 1, Newport Art Museum, Redwood Library, Salvation Army and Seamen’s Church Institute.

He is survived by his mother, son R. Andrew Lawton of Waleska, Ga., daughters Heather Lawton of Chuluota, Fla., and Chandra Marin of Winter Springs, Fla., sisters Susan B. Lawton of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Gay L. Cardoza of Middletown and five grandchildren.

His funeral and burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Seamen’s Church Institute, 18 Market Square, Newport, RI 02840.

Edna Serpa

Edna L. (Fletcher) Serpa, 88, of Evergreen Avenue in Middletown died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Joseph M. Serpa of Middletown. Born in Newport Aug. 3, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Arnold and Rosaline (Fournier) Fletcher.

She is survived by her husband, daughter Rosaline Pascoe of Middletown, grandsons Michael Joseph and Joshua William Pascoe, both of Middletown, several nieces and nephews and two goddaughters. She was the sister of the late Pearl Coelho.

Her funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue in Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Newport Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, 11 Friendship St., Newport, RI 02840.

Joan Wittstruck

Joan Wittstruck, 62, of Chadwick Street in Newport died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at home. Born in Newport Nov. 12, 1939, she was the daughter of Gladys Veronica (Smith) Wittstruck of Ohio and the late Homer Wittstruck.

She is survived by her mother, sons Edward D. Soares and John H. Soares, both of Newport, brothers Charles Martin Wittstruck of Michigan, John Harvey Clark of Illinois, Dale Robert Clark, Jerry Paul Clark and William Jessie Clark, all of Ohio, sisters Barbara Ann Dunn and Paula Joyce Henshaw, both of Newport, one grandson and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Manuel Soares.

Her funeral was held Jan. 23. Burial was in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy Scholarship Fund, 70 Bliss Road, Middletown, RI 02842.

Lucretia Bowman

Lucretia Maud (Coriander) Bowman, 79, of Park Holm in Newport died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at home. Born in Leominster, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Philip and Martha (Hazard) Coriander.

Mrs. Bowman worked as a cook in many private residences previous to her 12 years of working as a cook at Lucy’s Hearth.

She is survived by her sons George Walker of Oxford, Tenn., Morris Walker, William Walker and Angelo Howard, all of Newport, daughters Lucretia Banks Henderson of Narragansett, Vanessa McGee of Middletown, Monique Howard of Newport, Dollise Rickenbacker of Virginia Beach, Va., and Norrie Mills of Ellenwood, Ga., brothers George Coriander of Framingham, Mass., and Philip Coriander of Newport, 35 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Karen L. Coleman, the sister of the late John Coriander and Joseph Coriander and the grandmother of the late William Logan.

Her funeral was held Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a service at the Hillside Bible Church in Middletown. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to Lucy’s Hearth, 913 West Main Road, Middletown, RI 02842.

Ann Butz

Ann (Boas) Butz, 71, of Birchwood Drive in Portsmouth died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Thomas Frederick Butz. Born in Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 29, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Omeros and Mary (Antoneli) Boas.

Mrs. Butz was a sales supervisor with the US Naval Exchange from 1970 until 2001. She was a member of St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church in Newport, the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary branch 19 and the CPO wives.

She is survived by her son Ross W. Butz of Portsmouth, daughters Sharon Morin of Portsmouth and Marcie Martin of Portsmouth and six grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 2 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a service in St. Spyridon’s. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Margaret Mendonca

Margaret L. Mendonca, 87, of Turnpike Avenue in Portsmouth died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Francisco L. and Maria (Perreira) Mendonca.

Ms. Mendonca worked as a clerk with her brother for 25 years at the Mendonca Nurseries. She then went on to work at the Green Animals Topiary Gardens for the Preservation Society of Newport County. She also worked for many years at the Jesus Saviour Church bazaar.

She is survived by her brothers George A. Mendonca and Antone E. Mendonca, both of Portsmouth, sisters Mary A. Elshant of Middletown and Angelina Cotta and Virginia W. Mendonca, both of Portsmouth. She was the sister of the late Frank A. Mendonca, Joseph Mendonca and Sylvania Rogers.

Her funeral was held Monday, Feb. 4 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Jesus Saviour Church in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Catherine Ouellette

Catherine Ann Ouellette, 44, of Admiral Court in Middletown, who worked at the James L. Maher Center, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport Nov. 21, 1957, she was the daughter of Thomas Ouellette of Middletown and the late Jeanne (Lefebvre) Ouellette.

She is survived by her father, brother Robert Ouellette of Newport, sister Sheryl Chiles of Hegins, Pa., and four nieces.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 2 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the James L. Maher Center, 120 Hillside Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Ellen Regoli

Ellen (Lynch) Regoli, 92, of Harrison Avenue in Newport, formerly of Chapel Street, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph C. Regoli. Born in Cork City, County Cork, Ireland Sept. 27, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Lynch and Julia (Murphy) Lynch.

Mrs. Regoli came to the United States in her early 20s and worked in private service for Newport families, most notably for Miss Julia Berwind at the Elms in Newport. She also worked as a housekeeper for the Preservation Society of Newport County and Salve Regina University. She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Senior Citizens Center.

She is survived by her daughter Eileen Regoli of Middletown, nieces Eileen Carter, Patricia Towey and Margaret Ahearn, all of Newport, and Mary O’Riordan of Somerville, Mass., and several other nieces and nephews both in Newport and Ireland.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 2 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Village House Activity Fund, 70 Harrison Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Richard Rodrigues

Richard Benjamin Rodrigues, 59, of Whitwell Avenue in Newport died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. He was the husband of Gladys A. (Travers) Rodrigues. Born in Fall River, Mass., Dec. 17, 1942, he was the son of the late Antone and Mary (Mare) Rodrigues.

Mr. Rodrigues was a member of the Newport Lodge of Elks No. 104 and the FOP Auxiliary in Newport. He was a 1962 graduate of Rogers High School. After school, he worked with his uncle Manuel Mare at Island Electric. He then started his own company, Rodrigues Electric.

He is survived by his wife, sons Richard B. Rodrigues of Middletown and Timothy J. Rodrigues of Middletown, daughter Melissa Massey of Middletown, stepdaughters Karen Williams of Warwick and Kelly Huntley of Charlotte, NC, brothers Robert Rodrigues of North Kingstown and James Rodrigues of Portsmouth and two grandchildren.

His funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport.

Anthony Silvia

Anthony "Tony" Silvia, 74, of Clearview Avenue in Portsmouth died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Bettie (White) Silvia of Portsmouth. Born in Middletown Feb. 12, 1927, he was the son of the late Manuel and Georgianna (DeMello) Silvia.

Mr. Silvia owned and operated Tony’s Garage for 40 years, retiring in 1995. He was a veteran in the Army, serving in Germany during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, son Ashley Jackson Silvia of Portsmouth, daughters Veronica I. Shumway of Westerly, Debra Smith of Middletown and Alissa Correia of Exeter, brother Manuel Silvia of Dayville, Conn., sisters Mary Young of Warwick, Georgianna Rodrigues of Middletown, Dorothy Hagar of Detroit, Mich., Louise Perry of Middletown and Florence Fuentez of Kerrville, Texas, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Alfred Silvia.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 2 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport.

Jon Thoresen

Jon Thoresen, 89, of Mary Street in Newport died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Andree (Abd-el-Messih) Thoresen. Born in Oslo, Norway, June 27, 1912, he was the son of the late Ole and Ingred (Muller) Thoresen.

Mr. Thoresen was a diplomat with the Norwegian Foreign Service in the Paris office. He was a recipient of the Croix de Guerre and the Legion de Honeur from the French government for his work in the American Field Service and the French Renaissance during World War II. He was educated in Switzerland and Paris. Mr. Thoresen met and married his wife of 65 years in Paris in 1935, where they lived for 50 years before moving to Newport.

He is survived by his brother Arild Thoresen of Oslo, Norway. He was the father of the late Arild Thoresen.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street in Newport. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.

Helen Black

Helen Mae (McFeters) Black, 74, of Burdick Avenue in Newport died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at home. She was the wife of Cliff T. Black Jr. of Newport. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late William and Mildred McFeters.

Mrs. Black was a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher in the Newport school department, retiring after 34 years. She taught at Sheffield School and Sullivan School. She was a graduate of Rhode Island College, where she received her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. She was a member of the Newport Retired Teachers’ Association and the Rhode Island Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her husband, sons Robert W. Black of Lawrenceville, Ga., and David T. Black of Newport, daughter Andrea Jones of Virginia Beach, Va., and four grandchildren.

Her funeral will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 51 Memorial Blvd., Newport, RI 02840.

Robert Hobbs

Robert Ellice Hobbs, 67, of Prospect Avenue in Middletown died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at William Backus Hospital in Norwich, Conn. He was the husband of June I. (Kendall) Hobbs of Middletown. Born in Petersburg, Va., he was the son of the late Pleasant and Mary Elizabeth (Bolling) Hobbs.

Mr. Hobbs served 20 years in the U.S. Navy. After retiring, he worked as a security guard for a private company and was a police officer at the Newport Naval Base.

He is survived by his wife, sons Robert E. Hobbs Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Daniel E. Hobbs of Inverness, Scotland, and Eric G. Hobbs of Tiverton, daughters Veronica L. Hobbs of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Yvonne D. Hobbs of Middletown, stepson Frederick T. Abong of Newport, sister Emily Lloyd of New York, and his former wife Dorothy Mae Evans Hobbs of Middletown.

His funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.

David Jackson

David Martin Jackson, 47, of Chapel Street in Newport died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at home. Born in Newport Feb. 17, 1954, he was the son of Leon S. Jackson of Newport and the late Marilyn F. (Chinn) Jackson.

Mr. Jackson was a graduate of the former St. Mary’s grammar school in Newport and Rogers High School, class of 1972. He was a cook for many years, working at Café 200 and the Clarke Cooke House, until a car accident disabled him in the 1970s. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and lived near San Diego, Calif., from the late 1970s until the mid-1990s.

He is survived by his father, sisters Nancy L. Wilcox of Newport and Lynn C. Jackson of Antioch, Calif., brothers Dennis M. Jackson of Martinez, Calif., and Jay A. Jackson of Newport, three nephews, one niece and two grandnephews.

His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 9 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1865 Post Road, Warwick, RI 02886 or to the St. Mary’s Church Restoration Fund, 12 William St., Newport, RI 02840.

Frank Jennings Jr.

Frank Howard Jennings Jr., 76, of Roy Avenue in Middletown died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of Constance "Connie" (Winters) Jennings. Born in Newport Aug. 30, 1925, he was the son of the late Frank Howard and Anna (Blomberg) Jennings.

Mr. Jennings retired as a diesel maintenance foreman from Newport Electric in 1987 after 27 years of service. He had also worked as an oil burner mechanic at Johnson Brothers Oil and Bowens Oil and as an electrical service contractor for Butterton Electrical Company. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict as a second class aviation ordinance technician.

Mr. Jennings was a member of St. Paul’s Church, where he served as trustee, belonged to the church’s men’s club and served as president of the bowling league. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Utility Workers of New England Local 335. He served on the Middletown Tax Assessor’s Board, the Middletown Republican Town Committee and was the first cub master of Cub Scout Pack 52 of St. Lucy’s Church. He volunteered at local Newport soup kitchens, at the Newport Hospital and with Visiting Nurse Services.

He is survived by his wife, sons Steven H. Jennings of Bristol, Michael J. Jennings of Springfield, Va., and Roy A. Jennings of Nashua, N.H., daughter Linda M. Dutra of Middletown, brother John A. Jennings of Middletown, sister Frances Vogt of Jacksonville, N.C., nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Eva Reise.

His funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Hambly Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, RI Chapter, PO Box 1265, Coventry, RI 02816.

Clifford LaRock

Clifford Joseph LaRock, 52, of Pearl Street in Newport died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 at New England Medical Center in Boston. He was the husband of Carol (Kirchgessner) LaRock. Born in Newport, he was the son of Geraldine Helen (Girouard) LaRock Kardel and the late Henry Joseph LaRock.

Mr. LaRock worked as a fisherman for various Newport fishing boats. He served in the Army during the Vietnam era, receiving a service medal with four Bronze Stars, the Vietnam campaign medal with device, the national defense service medal and the marksman rifle medal.

He is survived by his wife, mother, stepfather Edward Laurence Kardel of Newport, son Sean Paul Bell of Newport, stepson James Whitley of Falmouth, Mass., stepdaughters Kimberly Whitley of Baltimore, Md., and Danielle Whitley of Gaithersburg, Md., sister Rosemary Lee LaRock of Manchester, N.H., niece Alithea Lee Johnson of Gaithersburg, stepsisters Susan Guistatis of Kingston, Charlotte Greene of Fairfield, Calif., Joan Kardel of Newport, Patricia Arruyo of Newport and Elizabeth Nelson of Newport and stepbrothers Mickael Kardel of Dolson, Fla., and Ronald Kardel of Newport.

Funeral services and burial were private. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, RI Chapter, 400 Main St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.

Blanche Levie

Blanche Sylvia (Krim) Levie, 92, of Sherman Street in Newport died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at home. She was the wife of Professor Howard S. Levie, Colonel, U.S. Army, Ret. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Ida (Goldberg) Krim.

Mrs. Levie was a well-known artist, having attended the Julliard School in New York City and the Corcoran Museum School in Washington, D.C. She was a veteran of World War II, having served as a sergeant in the WAC, drawing maps for air-sea rescue and posters for the sale of war bonds.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, brothers Norman Krim of Newton Center, Mass., nephews Arthur Krim of Cambridge, Mass., Donald Krim of New York City and Robert Krim of Jamaica Plains, Mass., two grandnieces and two grandnephews.

Her funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in the Westchester Hill Cemetery in Hastings-on-the-Hudson.
