Robert Vaillancourt

Robert Lawrence Vaillancourt, 85, of Fischer Circle, Portsmouth died Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Marguerite (Pages) Vaillancourt. Born in Highland Park, Mich., Feb. 13, 1917, he was the son of the late Edward and Marion (Hatch) Vaillancourt.

Mr. Vaillancourt was educated in Detroit and studied engineering. He was drafted into the Army six months before Pearl Harbor and served until the end of World War II. He participated in the Italian campaign, including the landing in Salerno, Anzio, and the siege of Monte Cassino with the Fifth Army Ordinance. He was a builder and land developer in Asheville, N.C., and a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Home Builders before settling in Portsmouth 31 years ago. He loved boating, fishing and outdoor activities. He was a master kite builder and storyteller.

He is survived by his wife, son Philip L. Vaillancourt of Portsmouth, daughters Diane K. Vaillancourt of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Christine J. Vaillancourt of Boston, brother Russell Vaillancourt of Bradenton, Fla., five grandchildren, one great-grandson and nephews Charles Pages and Jacques Pages, who he helped to raise. He was the brother of the late Eleanor Nief and Mildred Somes.

His funeral was held April 4 at Connors Funeral Home. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth. Donations in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Richard Ward

Richard Joseph Ward, 40, of Hopkinton, formerly of Rogers Lane, Middletown, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 at South County Hospital in Wakefield. Born in Newport Aug. 17, 1961, he was the son of Margaret Beatrice (Yeomans) Ward of Middletown and the late John Daniel Ward Jr.

Mr. Ward worked as a deliveryman for the Westerly Sun. He leaves many friends at the Perspectives Corporation, who provided care and support for him.

He is survived by his mother, brothers John H. Ward of Newport and Robert D. Ward of Fall River, Mass., sisters Rebecca Ann Knight of Jamestown and Dorothy A. Coelho of Tiverton, four nieces, four nephews and many aunts and uncles.

His funeral was held April 8 at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Frederick Craig

Frederick Eberhardt Craig, 93, of Middletown died Thursday, April 18, 2002. He was the husband of Margaret Ould (Bell) Craig. Born in Peekskill, NY, March 30, 1909, he was the son of the late Andrew Keith and Emeline Nichols (Eberhardt) Craig.

Mr. Craig was a 1930 graduate of Princeton University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He retired from the New York Telephone Company in 1974. A commander in the US Naval Reserve, he served in World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, daughters Margaret Craig Chadwick of Somerset, NJ, Pamela Craig Lewise of Enfield, Conn., Suzanne Craig Petell of Malden, Mass., and Deborah Craig Merrick of Bedford, Nova Scotia, and grandchildren Nathaniel Craig Chadwick, Michael MacGregor Chadwick and Annaka Margaree Merrick.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 23. Donations in his memory may be made to Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport, RI 02840.

Evelyn DeSantis

Evelyn M. (Keeley) DeSantis, 88, of Bartlett Court in Newport died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at home after a short illness. She was the ex-wife of the late Leonard DeSantis. Born in Newport Dec. 16, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Fitzpatrick) Keeley.

Mrs. DeSantis was a 40-year employee of the Perrotti family drug store, retiring in the late 1980s. She was an avid bingo player at the VFW and the Knights of Columbus. She was a member of the St. Joseph Rotary Society, the Catholic Daughters of America and the King House Senior Citizens Center.

She is survived by her son Anthony J. DeSantis of Newport, daughters Leona Fulkerson of Louisville, Ky., Patricia Ludwig of Portsmouth and JoAnne Laos of Pittsburgh, Pa., brother Joseph Keeley of Middletown, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was the sister of the late Kenneth Keeley and Helen LaFleur.

Her funeral was held Saturday, April 20. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Joseph’s Church soup kitchen, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.

Aileen Dring

Aileen R. Dring, 91, of Tuckerman Avenue in Middletown died Monday, April 22, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late John M. Dring. Born in Newport July 4, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Marshall C. and Bertha A. (Anderson) Rogers.

Mrs. Dring was a 1930 graduate of Rogers High School. She was employed in the central sterile supply department at Newport Hospital from 1950 to 1954. She took a leave of absence and began a course at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital school of practical nursing in North Providence. She graduated in 1955, obtained her license and returned to Newport Hospital, working there as a licensed practical nurse until her retirement in 1973. She was qualified as an electrocardiograph technician. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

She is survived by her sons John R. Dring of Fukaya, Japan and Roger A. Dring of Middletown, daughter Elaine R. Platt of Newport, half-sister Joyce R. Phillipson, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Nina R. Thurston and the half-sister of the late Barbara R. Mudgett.

Her funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, April 25 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Joseph Faria Jr.

Joseph S. Faria, Jr., 75, of Middle Road in Portsmouth died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Florinda (Correia) Faria of Portsmouth. Born in Fall River, Mass., April 23, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph S. Faria Sr. and Elvira (Costa) Faria.

Mr. Faria worked in transportation at NETC for 38 years, retiring in 1985. He was on the Narragansett Council for the Boy Scouts of America and a volunteer for Portsmouth girls’ softball. He was an avid reader and airplane model enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Francesca Ann Faria of Portsmouth, sister Jane A. Horne of Providence and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marilyn Houts

Marilyn Louise (Mally) Houts, 77, of Admiralty Drive in Middletown died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles Francis Xavier Houts. Born in Newport Feb. 28, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alva (Campbell) Mally.

Mrs. Houts had dedicated her life to taking care of her family.

She is survived by her sons Christopher V. Houts of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Thomas E. Houts of Middletown, brother Thomas Mally of Newport, four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 24. Burial will take place at a later date in the family lot in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.

Marie Paranzino

Marie Dorothy (Vierra) Paranzino, 81, of Valley Road in Middletown died Monday, April 22, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Peter Louis Paranzino. Born in Portsmouth Sept. 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Edmina (Borges) Vierra.

Mrs. Paranzino was a cake decorator at Frasch Bakery for 12 years, retiring in 1983. She was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. She dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Peter Robert Paranzino of Middletown, daughter Lisa M. Harkness of Portsmouth, brother George Vierra of Middletown and six grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Manuel Vierra, Joseph Vierra, Anthony Vierra, Peter Vierra, John Vierra and Elizabeth Paranzino.

Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 25 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Rose Perry

Rose Eleanor (Gracia) Perry, 87, of Forest Avenue in Middletown, formerly of Middle Road in Portsmouth, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Henry G. Perry. Born in Portsmouth July 8, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Goulart) Gracia.

Mrs. Perry worked for Firestone Rubber Company in Warren, Woolworth’s in the Aquidneck Shopping Center and Chaves Garden Center in Middletown. She was a member of St. Barnabas Church and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her brother Francis Gracia of Tiverton, sisters Anne Chaves of Warren and Eleanor Gomes of Little Compton, nine nephews and nieces and several grandnephews and grandnieces. She was the sister of the late George Gracia, Antone Gracia, Joseph Gracia Jr., Frances Gomes, Mary Gracia and Phoebe Costa.

Her funeral was held Saturday, April 20. Burial was in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery in Little Compton. Donations in her memory may be made to the Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840 or to Lucy’s Hearth, 913 West Main Road, Middletown, RI 02842.

Lucy Silvia

Lucy Rose (Pemantel) Silvia, 90, died Friday, April 19, 2002 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Care Center in Newport. She was the wife of the late Anthony C. Silvia. Born in Jamestown March 14, 1912, she was the daughter of the late August and Angelina (Estrella) Pemantel.

Mrs. Silvia had been employed as a housekeeper and cook for a number of Newport and Portsmouth estates. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in the Newport area and was a member of the Portsmouth Senior Center, Forever Young, the Green Thumb Garden Club, the East Providence Voters Social Club, the Portuguese Cultural Club and the Portsmouth Knitting Club. She was also a member of St. Barnabas Church and the Legion of Mary.

She is survived by her daughter Lucy A. Augustus of Portsmouth, sons Albert Silvia and Anthony "Buster" Silvia, both of Portsmouth, grandchildren Marjory Augustus of Taunton, Mass., Cheryl Chromik of Virginia Beach, Fla., Francis "Rocky" Augustus of Little Compton and Theresa Toppa of Newport, great-grandchildren Christine Silvia of Naples, Fla., Kyle Augustus and Andrew Augustus, both of Little Compton, and Jessica Chromik of Connecticut, sisters Irene Teves and Lillian Dutra and brother Albert Pemantel. She was the mother of the late Elaine Silvia and the sister of the late Mary Anderson, William Pemantel, Manual Pemantel, Rubin Pemantel, Frank Pemantel, James Pemantel and John Pemantel.

Her funeral was held Monday, April 22. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Wagon Fund, PO Box 806, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Wilford Webster

Wilford Webster, 83, of Sims Street in Newport died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Desilets Nursing Center in Warren. He was the husband of the late Vivian (Taber) Webster. Born in Portland, Ore., April 1, 1919, he was the son of the late Joseph and Liza (Leighton) Webster.

Mr. Webster was a US Navy veteran, having served for more than 20 years, retiring as a first class gunnersmate. After living in Oregon and Arizona, he moved to Newport in 1996.

He is survived by his former wife Marjorie Williams of Newport.

His funeral was held Wednesday, April 24. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Mesa, Ariz.

Germaine Adams

Germaine McCarthy Adams, 46, of Opechee Drive, Bristol, formerly of Newport, died April 14, 2002 at Miriam Hospital, Providence, after a long illness. She was the wife of Paul M. Adams. Born in Newport April 21, 1955, she was the daughter of Patrick F. and Elizabeth (Murphy) McCarthy. Mrs. Adams was a graduate of the former Elmhurst Academy in Portsmouth, the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Conn., Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, and the University of Rhode Island, receiving master’s degrees in library science and public administration. She was a librarian and homemaker, working at the New York Public Library, the Museum of the Performing Arts at the Lincoln Center and Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, Mass., before moving to Bristol in 1988. She worked for the Preservation Society of Newport County, was an avid reader and enjoyed art. She is survived by her husband, parents, son Brendan P. Adams of Bristol and brother Patrick F. McCarthy Jr. of Watertown, Mass. Her funeral was held April 17. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Newport Public Library, 300 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.

Bessie Bardsley

Bessie Viola Bardsley, 86, of Crestwood Nursing Home, Warren, formerly of Rogers Lane, Middletown, died April 9, 2002 at Crestwood. Born in Attleboro, Mass., Aug. 12, 1915, she was the wife of the late Fred Bardsley. She is survived by her daughters Linda Bardsley of Portsmouth and Marsha Hirsch of Attleboro, Mass., sons Donald Bardsley of Pawtucket, Richard Bardsley of Fall River, Mass., and Kenneth Bardsley of Fort Meyers, Fla., 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held April 12 at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

George Greenman

George W. Greenman, 26, of Bayview Avenue, Newport, died unexpectedly April 13, 2002 at the UMass Medical Center, Worcester, Mass. Born in Newport May 6, 1975, he was the son of George W. and Linda D. (Varney) Greenman. Mr. Greenman worked for Newport County Child and Family Services as a house manager and counselor at the Champlin Place group home in Middletown for the past six years. He was a 1993 graduate of Rogers High School and a 1999 graduate of Salve Regina University. He played football at Thompson Middle School, Rogers and Salve Regina and also played baseball and basketball at Rogers. While at Rogers, he was invited to participate in the Scholar Athlete Games at the University of Rhode Island. At Salve Regina, he was awarded first team all-conference as a defensive linebacker. He helped to coach the Rogers football team last fall and the Newport Pop Warner football league from 1997-99. While at Rogers, he was a member of Natural Helpers and Big Brother/Big Sister. He was an avid sportsman, playing softball for the Newport Auto Center in Middletown and the Saints of Newport. He is survived by his parents, fiancée Jill M. Medeiros of Newport, son Colin Chase Greenman and daughter Shay McKenna Greenman, both of Newport, one uncle, two aunts and two nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 18 at St. Mary’s Church in Newport. Burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Rogers High School athletic program, 15 Wickham Road, Newport, RI 02840.

Catherine Hogan

Catherine Gloria Hogan, 66, of Beacon Terrace, Middletown, died April 5, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Feb. 9, 1936, she was the wife of Jerry S. Bowen. Ms. Hogan was a licensed practical nurse in the health care profession. She is survived by her son Jerry W. Bowen of Middletown. A memorial Mass was held April 11. Burial was private.

Wiley Blankenship Jr.

Wiley Thomas Blankenship Jr., 78, of Rosa Road, Middletown, died April 10, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Julia A. (Konitsky) Blankenship. Born in Oak Park, Ga., Sept. 12, 1923, he was the son of the late Wiley T. and Rosa G. (Kersey-McCullough) Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship had served for 20 years in the US Navy, retiring in 1961 after serving in World War II and Korea. He worked for the Fuller Brush Company, Bove Chevrolet, the Fleet Reserve Club as the club manager and at the DAV from. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Past Grand Knight and Past Faithful Navigator. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 19, the Middletown VFW Post No. 4487 and the DAV Post No. 7. He is survived by his wife, sons John T. Blankenship of Middletown, Dennis M. Blankenship of North Providence and Paul W. Blankenship of Iceland, daughters Joyce Withers of Dix Hills, NY, and Patricia Visser of Middletown, sisters Jo Hamilton of Fayetteville, NC, and Peggy Lawhorn of Coldwell, Idaho, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. His funeral was held April 15. Burial was in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. John McAskill Jr.

John Norman McAskill Jr., 83, of Slocum Street, Newport, died April 10, 2002 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Roberta (Miller) McAskill. Born in Newport Feb. 16, 1919, he was the son of the late John N. and Christine (Campbell) McAskill. Mr. McAskill was a 1936 graduate of Rogers High School. After graduation, he served in the Army air force during World War II. He was the bank manager at the former Rhode Island Hospital Trust for 42 years until his retirement in 1979. Mr. McAskill was a member of St. George’s Church in Newport, where he served as a treasurer and on the vestry. He was a member of the Newport Historical Society, the American Legion and the VFW. He is survived by his sons Robert Scott McAskill of Newport and John Kirk McAskill of Philadelphia and nephews Bruce McAskill of Tiverton and Glen McAskill of Cisco, Texas. He was the father of the late Wendy McAskill Gadd and the brother of the late Francis R. McAskill and Esther M. Bloomfield. A memorial service was held April 15. Burial was private. Mary Ann Picard

Mary Ann Picard, 93, of Warner Street, Newport, died April 9, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Victor J. Picard. Born in Fall River, Mass., Jan. 18, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Jane G. Mulholland. Mrs. Picard worked for General Electric for 25 years, retiring in the 1960s as an assembler. She also ran the St. John’s Evangelist thrift shop until it closed. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph’s Church. She is survived by her daughter Victorie Picard of Newport, cousins Barbara A. Cross of Leesburg, Fla., and Rand Edward Bradbury of Middletown and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her funeral was held April 13. Burial was in Island Annex Cemetery in Newport. George Steele

George Irving Steele, 90, of Broadway, Newport, died April 9, 2002 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. He was the husband of Louise (Kdan) Steele. Born in Newport July 29, 1911, he was the son of the late George I. and Louetta Jenny (Barker) Steele. Mr. Steele was a photographer with the former Naval Torpedo Station, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Southeast Organ Society, the Redwood Library and Trinity Church. He served in the US Army during World War II for the 20th Armored Division in the European Theater. He is survived by his wife, nephew Donald Mulvaney and his wife Margaret of Warwick, goddaughter Carol Smith and her husband Roy of Middletown and great-niece Katherine Mulvaney of North Providence. His funeral was private.

Ezra Thompson II

Ezra William Thompson II, 51, of Boss Court, Newport, died April 9, 2002 at home. Born in Newport June 5, 1950, he was the son of Ezra and Shirley (Robinson) Thompson of Newport. Mr. Thompson had been employed by Castle Hill Inn and Resort as a maintenance worker. He had also worked for area roofing companies. He is survived by his parents, son Ezra William Thompson III of Newport, daughters Rebecca Thompson and Debra Jean Thompson, both of New Mexico, sisters Shirley Rayno and Alice Thompson, both of Newport, and Judy Roberts of Raynham, Mass., and five grandchildren. His funeral was private.

Jordan Neves

Jordan Michael Neves, 6, of Linden Lane in West Greenwich, formerly of West Main Road in Middletown, died April 24, 2002 at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. Born in Newport Sept. 18, 1995, he was the son of Edmundo Jose and Iris (Erausquin) Neves.

Jordan was in the first grade at Wawaloam Elementary School in Exeter. He played soccer on teams in West Greenwich. He enjoyed car racing, racecars and the Power Rangers.

He is survived by his parents, paternal grandparents Joseph and Alice (Perry) Neves of Middletown, maternal grandfather Rubin Erausquin of Middletown, maternal grandmother Iris (Colon) Erausquin of Middletown, brother Jared Macious Neves of West Greenwich, many aunts and uncles, many great-aunts and great-uncles and many cousins.

His funeral was held April 29 at Memorial Funeral Home, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy’s Church, Middletown. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital, 593 Eddy St., Providence, RI 02903.

Harold Powers

Harold Lloyd Powers, 75, of Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth died April 27, 2002 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Mass. He was the husband of Joan (Fay) Powers. Born in Seattle, Wash., Aug. 14, 1926, he was the son of the late Harry and Wilda (Franks) Powers.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, Mr. Powers worked for the Fish and Wildlife Service in Anchorage, Alaska. He then went on to work as an air traffic controller for 27 years, retiring in 1976. Mr. Powers did part time work selling amateur radios and equipment. He enjoyed boating and ham radio and was a member of the US Power Squadron.

He is survived by his wife, sons Howard J. Powers of Everett, Wash., Harry R. Powers of Stanwood, Wash., and James Powers of East Brookfield, Mass., daughter Joy Williams of North Attleboro, Mass., sister Laverne Nelson of Linwood, Wash., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Portsmouth Rescue Wagon Fund, PO Box 806, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Anthony Souza

Anthony Souza, 78, of Broadway in Newport died April 27, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Corey) Souza. Born in Middletown Feb. 24, 1924, he was the son of the late Jesse and Philomena Souza.

Mr. Souza was a driver-packer with J.L. Maher Van Lines of Newport for 40 years. He served in the Army as a tank driver during World War II in the European Theater under Gen. Patton.

He is survived by his daughters Jacqueline Delaney of Portsmouth and Catherine A. Souza-Moore of Middletown, grandson Michael Delaney Jr. of Sunapee, NH, granddaughter Jacqueline M. Mitchell of Newport, NH, and three great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.

Grace Tuttle

Grace Leona (Flanders) Tuttle, 80, of Harvey Road in Middletown died April 26, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late William Earl Tuttle. Born in Hillsboro, NH, Sept. 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Carleton W. and Mary (Whitney) Flanders.

Mrs. Tuttle was a homemaker. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 122 in Warren and had served as president, district president and state historian. She was an avid bingo player and had been a volunteer for the American International Little League.

She is survived by her sons Peter Tuttle, William Tuttle Jr. and Donald J. Sullivan, all of Middletown, and Michael A. Tuttle of Rocky Hill, Conn., daughters Grace L. Homen of Middletown, Jane M. Clarke of Portsmouth and Barbara Fales of Antrim, NH, sisters Ruth Feeney of Bristol, Conn., and Edith Clarke of Littleton, NH, 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Howard Flanders and Warren Flanders.

Her funeral was held May 1 at Memorial Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.

Gredo "Volp" Volpicelli

Gredo Vincent "Volp" Volpicelli, 76, of Lawton Brook Lane in Portsmouth died April 27, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Stella (Daglis) Volpicelli. Born in Providence Feb. 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Louis and Immaculata Maria (Alvigi) Volpicelli.

Mr. Volpicelli was a 1944 graduate of Rogers High School and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was a licensed electrician, having worked for Bestoso and Butterton. He worked for Newport Hospital for 14 years and then for the University of Rhode Island for 10 years, retiring in 1986. He volunteered for various organizations, including Island Hospice and Newport Hospital, where he was Santa Claus for 25 years. He was a communicant of St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church and a member of AHEPA and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, daughters Angela Volpicelli and Maria Roberts, both of Portsmouth, sons Joseph Volpicelli and Vincent Volpicelli, both of Portsmouth, and granddaughter Christine A. Krones. He was the brother of the late Catherine Volpicelli, Francis Volpicelli and Anna Volpicelli Allain.

His funeral was held April 30 at St. Spyridon’s Church, Newport. Burial was in Middletown Cemetery, Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire and Rescue Wagon Fund, PO Box 806, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to St. Spyridon’s Church, 390 Thames St., Newport, RI 02840.

Gillmena White

Gillmena E. (Phillips) White, 78, of Continental Drive in Middletown died April 26, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late James C. White. Born in East Providence April 15, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Botelho) Phillips.

Mrs. White was a chief clerk in the Middletown School Department for 25 years, retiring in 1990. She was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church and a member of the Middletown Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her son James P. White of New Hampshire, daughters Kathleen Quartermouse and Paula J. White, both of Middletown, sister Agnes Peter of Newport and five grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Alfred Phillips and Gloria Martland.

Her funeral was held April 29 at Memorial Funeral Home, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Jesus Saviour Church, Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Deborah Dennis

Deborah A. (Chamberlin) Dennis, 43, of Rogers Lane in Middletown died Monday, May 13, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Christopher Dennis. Born in Newport Oct. 7, 1958, she was the daughter of George A. "Biff" and Connie (Mendonca) Chamberlin.

Mrs. Dennis was a member of St. Mark’s Church in Jamestown.

She is survived by her parents, sons Joshua Chamberlin of Newport, Christopher M. Dennis and Nathan T. Dennis, both of Middletown, daughter Jennifer Leigh Chamberlin of Orlando, Fla., brothers Mark Chamberlin of San Diego, Calif., and Todd M. Chamberlin of Portsmouth, sisters Jill Soares and Jackie French, both of Portsmouth and one granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at St. Mark’s Church, 60 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown. Burial will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to Brigham & Women’s Hospital, thoracic unit, fifth floor, 116 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02116.

Delores Earley

Delores E. (Gomes) Earley, 71, of Evans Avenue in Tiverton died Monday, May 6, 2002 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Mass. Born in Newport May 6, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Philip Debarros Gomes and Anna (Lopes) Gomes Lima.

Mrs. Earley was a graduate of Rogers High School. She worked at the Heatherwood Health Care Center as a certified nursing assistant from 1986 until 1996. She was a loving and devoted sister, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her sons William K. Earley and Peter A. Earley, both of Tiverton; daughters Darlene P. Smitherman and Billie Renee Lewis, both of Newport, Anna Marie Johnson and Vicki I. Mack, both of Middletown, Anita K. Powell and Delores E. Powell, both of Tiverton, and Janet L. Word of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers Phillip Gomes Jr., John Lima Jr. and Robert Lima, all of Newport, Richard Gomes of Providence, George Gomes of Oakland, Calif., Donald Gomes of Harrisburg, Pa.; sisters Joan Z. Saunders of Baltimore, Md., Mary Threadgill of Richmond, Va., and Diane Thomas of Brandywine, Md., 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Saturday, May 11 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation of Rhode Island, 209 Cottage St., Pawtucket, RI 02860 or to the Lupus Foundation of America, Rhode Island Chapter, 8 Fallon Ave., Providence, RI 02908.
