RAY GAINEY
Services for Ray Darrell Gainey, 63, of Gaston, formerly of Cayce, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, in State Street Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Pete Cassidy, with burial at Elmwood Cemetery, directed by Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church. Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, May 6. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late John H. Gainey Jr. and Ada Odom Gainey. He was a member of State Street Baptist Church and was retired from the City of Columbia Housing Authority. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Gainey was very active in the adult choir and men’s ensembles and also sang at many funerals in the Cayce and West Columbia area. Surviving are his sister, Vee Opal Tyner of Port Royal; brothers, Julian E. Gainey Sr., Ronald B. Gainey, both of Hartsville and a number of nieces and nephews.

JOHN D. CARTER
Services for John Dalmar Carter, 90, of Hemingway, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, in Good Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway. Mr. Carter died Saturday, June 10. Born on Oct. 16, 1909 in Carters Crossroads, he was the son of the late John Leonard Carter and Harriett Elizabeth (Betty) Bruorton Carter. He was a graduate of Hemingway High School and Droughns Business College of Columbia. Mr. Carter was a farmer and retired from the South Carolina Tax Commission as a field sales tax officer after 20 years of service. He was a member of New Good Hope United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and Sunday School teacher for many years. Surviving are his wife, Vernice Williams Carter; a daughter, Greta Carter Hawkins and her husband, Marion Dargan Hawkins Jr. of Hartsville; a brother, Reverend Clifford Carter of Hemingway; sister, Mary Carter Elliott of Hemingway; sister-in-law, Gutherie Harrison Carter of Hemingway; grandson, Marion Dargan Hawkins III and his wife, Wand Hawkins of Columbia; granddaughter, Elizabeth Carter Hawkins Macdiarmid and her husband Trey Macdiarrmid of New Orleans, La; granddaughter, Greta Anne Hawkins Rowe and her husband, James Rowe of Atlanta, Ga; great-grandchildren, Patrick Dargan Macdiarmid and Elizabeth Carter Macdiarmid of New Orleans, La. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and a wealth of friends. Mr. Carter was predeceased by a son, Leonard Cochran Carter. Memorials may be given to Good Hope United Methodist Church, 908 Folly Grove Road, Hemingway, SC 29554.

JOHN SIMON
Services for John Simon, 47, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2000, in The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Simon died Monday, June 12, in Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Clinton and Mae Bell Simon. He received his education in Lee County public schools and attended The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. He was employed with Coca Cola Bottling Company as well as a chauffeur for many years. Surviving are his wife, Donn Simon; a daughter, Morgan Simon, both of Greensboro, NC; six sisters, Elenora Arthur, Dorothy Stevenson, Nancy Cook, all of Bishopville Annie Bell Simon, Christine Simon and Barbara Burch, all of Hartsville; two brothers, James Simon of Hampton, VA. and Danny Simon of Greensboro, N.C.

HAROLD A. MAHON
Services for Harold Ansel Mahon, 62, will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 16, 2000, at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Mr. Mahon died Sunday, June 11. He was born in Latta and was the son of Earlene Weatherford and the late Harold Ashby Mahon. He was a retired Master Gunnery Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp, where he served for more than 22 years, including three tours in Vietnam. Mr. Mahon was retired from Construction Equipment Company in Orlando, Fla. He enjoyed fishing and working on cars and was a loving father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Julia Mahon of the home; four sons, Douglas H. (Sheri) Mahon of Oklahoma, Michael S. (Brenda) Mahon of Ohio, Lee Mahon and Timothy D. Mahon, both of Florida; two daughters, Lisha D. (Victor) Woolfall of Florida and Cynthia L. Mahon of Hartsville; three brothers, Thomas W. (Nadene) Mahon of Darlington, Lonnie S (Helen) Mahon of Moncks Corner and Dudley S. Mahon of Summerville; two sisters, Alice Faye Mahon of Florida and Linda K. Hatchell of Darlington; three sisters-in-law, Ellen Jones of Darlington, and Patty Alonso and Marie Mahon, both of Florida; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Myrtle Beach Office, 950 48th Ave. N. Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

MELVIN McELVEEN
Services for Melvin Bradley McElveen, 67, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. L. Z. Freeman will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. McElveen, died Wednesday, June 14, and was the widower of Peggy Ammons McElveen. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late George Bradley and Ella Mae Cook McElveen. He was retired from the City of Hartsville. Surviving are two sons, Doug McElveen of Bear Creek, N.C. and Brad McElveen of Bennettsville; one daughter, Gail Thompson of Hartsville; a step-son, David Cheuvront of Hartsville; step-daughters, Carol Moody of Calabash, N.C., Wanda Snipes of Hartsville; brothers, James McElveen of Sanford, N.C., George McElveen of Cameron, N.C., Marvin McElveen of Springfield, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

W. LAWSON BRANNON
Graveside services for W. Lawson Brannon, 84, will be at 5 p.m. today, June 16, 2000, in Malvern Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020 or to Brannon Cemetery, c/o Neil Smith, 2694 Bethune Road, Bethune, S.C. 29009. Kornegay Funeral Home of Camden is in charge. Mr. Brannon died Wednesday, June 14. Born in Bethune, he was the son of the late Benjamin Wiley and Alice Yarborough Brannon. He was a retired forester and owner of Brannon Timber. He was an Army World War II and Korean War veteran, a member of J. LeRoy Belk Post 17 American Legion, a member of Woodmen of The World, member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church and former member of Elder of Bethune Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Annie Mae Godwin Brannon; three sisters, Mary Hunter and Blanche Brannon, both of Columbia and Sarah Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, B. W. Brannon Jr. of Camden; a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Olga Atkinson.

REV. HOLLINGSWORTH
Services for the Rev. J. C. Hollingsworth, 75, will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at 4 p.m. from Pine Ridge Congregational Holiness Church. The Rev. Jerry Hatcher and the Rev. Tommy Cashett officiated with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Rev. Hollingsworth was born in Rockingham, N.C., a son of the late Gilbert and Mima Steen Hollingsworth. He was pastor of the Congregational Holiness Church for 48 years, having served churches in Lexington and Rockingham, N.C., and for the past 24 years was pastor of Pine Ridge Congregational Holiness Church. Surviving are his wife, Catherine Lynch Hollingsworth of Hartsville; a daughter, Carolyn Dalrymple of Kernersville, N.C.; sons, James Hollingsworth and Donnie Hollingsworth, both of Lexington, N.C., and Earnest Hollingsworth of Hartsville; a brother, Ed Hollingsworth of Rockingham; sisters, Jane Shirk and Edith Grant of Rockingham; 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William Hollingsworth. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

EARNESTINE McCOY
Services for Earnestine "Molly" McCoy will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 28, 2000, in St. John United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. McCoy died Sunday, June 25. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Henry James and Bertha Jackson Bess. She was educated in the public schools and was a 1945 graduate of Butler High School. She later attended Morris College of Sumter where she received a certificate in nursing. Returning to Hartsville, she was employed with the Darlington County Schools as a school nurse at both Southside and Washington Street Elementary Schools. She was married early in life to William E. Keitt and to this union two daughters were born. She later married the late Gilbert McCoy Sr. Mrs. McCoy was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and was a member of its United Methodist Women, Usher Board, and also a member of the Order of Easter Star Chapter No. 56. Survivors are two daughters, Patricia S. Keitt of Hartsville and Bertha A. Keitt (Leroy) Ashley Jr. of Florence; a step son, Gilbert (Margie) McCoy; a god daughter, Beulah (Ronald) Mumford; three sisters, Beatrice Bess Wingate of Florence, Althella Bess Peoples of Darlington and Estelle Bess Johnson of Hartsville; a brother, Emmett Henry Bess of Hartsville; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one aunt, Mamie Joe Jeffery.

NELLIE L. SCOTT
Services for Nellie Lee Scott, 85, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Hoke Roberson and the Rev. Homer Hinson officiating. Burial was in the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery in Lee County, directed by Norton Funeral Home of Bishopville. Mrs. Scott died June 25. She was born in Lee County, the daughter of the late Ned and Elizabeth (Babe) Hopkins. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Annie Rogers of Raeford, N.C., Mrs. Carolyn Arrants of Bishopville, Mrs. Edna Boykin of Hartsville and Mrs. Sylvia Maxwell of Camden; two sons, Robert Lee Scott of Camden and Hebron Scott, of Fayetteville, N.C.; 36 grandchildren and several great and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Tidwell Sullivan; a son, Bruce Scott and her husband, Robert Ernest Scott.

CHELSEY E. FROESE
Graveside services for Chelsey Elaine Froese, infant daughter of Michael L. and Pollie Wint Froese, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Gainey officiating. Surviving are parents of Hartsville; two sisters, Ashley and Shelby Froese of Hartsville; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Gay Ciuffetelli and the late Tex Froese of Hartsville; maternal grandparents are Marka and Diane McCarty and Henry Wint, all of Hartsville, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
