EUGENE HELMS
Services for Eugene C. Helms, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Bob Cline and Dr. Clarence Elmore officiating. Burial will be in New Providence Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church. Mr. Helms died Tuesday, May 2. Born in Union County, he was a son of the late Raymond Creighton and Cora Elizabeth Helms Helms. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Adult Senior choir, Fellowship Sunday School class, and a worker in the Junior Department. He was also a past deacon at New Providence Baptist Church, manager of Sumter Dairy for 16 years and active in Boy Scouts. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Easterling Helms; son, Charles E. Helms, both of Hartsville; a daughter, Mrs. Betty (Wesley) Haynes of Greenwood; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step-mother, Louise Harrison Helms.

SID KELLEY
Services for Robert Kelley, 68, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Kelleytown Baptist Church. Rev. Gary Anderson officiated with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Kelleytown Baptist Church. Mr. Kelley died Friday, April 28. Born in Kelleytown, he was a son of the late Henry Acie and Ruth Adams Kelley. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church and was a deacon and former Sunday School director. He was a farmer and vice-chairman of the Pee Dee Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees. Surviving are his wife, Floogie Woodham Kelley of Hartsville; son, Bert (Jill) Kelley; a daughter, Beth (Dan) Abernathy, of Florence; two brothers, Henry Kelley and Manly Kelley, of Hartsville; four daughters, Elizabeth Gardner, Naomi Jackson, both of Hartsville, Dora McGrew of Columbia and Alsie Kelley of Lexington; and a granddaughter, Annie Abernathy.

JAMES GAINEY
Services for James Thomas Gainey, 84, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church. Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, May 2. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Tom Wesley and Bessie Stokes Gainey. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class. He was owner and operator of Tommy’s Exxon for 19 years, was a World War II veteran and a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hunter Gainey of Hartsville; brother, Clyde W. (Mary Ethel) Gainey of Hartsville; and two sisters, Miriam (William) Lloyd of Lydia and Lucille Chapman of Hartsville.

DONYETT JOSEY
Services for Donyett (Prestige) Josey, 25, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, in Butler Gym with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Josey died Sunday, April 30, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Mary Kelley Josey and the late Robert Josey. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School class of ‘92 and attended Second Baptist Church. Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are his fiancee, Cicely McNeill of Hartsville; a daughter, Donetta Josey of Hartsville; four sisters, Jenara Josey, Hallie Josey, Renado Smith and Michelle Jacobs, all of Hartsville; two brothers, Robert Josey Jr. and Robert Smith, both of Hartsville.

ALMA TYNER
Services for Alma Stokes Tyner, 91, will be held 3 p.m. today, May 3, 2000, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Beck will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Tyner, widow Dewey Tyner, died Monday, May 1. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Roxie Layton Stokes. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Nina Peterson, Louise Campbell, Betty Morrison, all of Hartsville; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

GEORGE STARNES
Services for George Roscoe Starnes, 90, of Lancaster, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Betty Moore and Rev. Athon Arant. Burial followed at Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte, N.C., directed by Hartley Funeral Home of Lancaster. Mr. Starnes died Friday, April 28, at Lancaster Convalescent Center where he was a resident. He was born June 21, 1906 in Union County, NC and was the son of the late William Benson Starnes and Mary Threatt Starnes. Mr. Starnes was first married to the late Allie Snipes Starnes, second to the late Nellie Vincent Starnes and then to the late Mrs. Edna Fowler Starnes. He was an associate minister of McClain Road Baptist Church in Charlotte, N. C. Survivors are two sons, Robert G. Starnes of Lancaster and W. B. Starnes of Monroe, NC; five daughters, Rev. Betty S. Moore and Mrs. Mary Rose Harding, both of McBee, Mrs. James (Myrtle) Dabbs of Lancaster, Mrs. Poovey (Allie Mae) Mackey of Heath Springs, and Mrs. Mildred Lorene Cranford of Columbia; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 12 great- great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Southern Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

CHARLES STOKES
Services for Charles E. "Punk" Stokes, 59, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2000, at Bible Truth Holiness Church. Rev. Hazel Mixon officiated with burial in Mt. Elon Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Stokes died Friday, April 28. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Mendel Edward and Grace Windham Stokes. He was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church, worked at Sonoco Products Company for 25 years and had served in the S.C. National Guard. Surviving are his wife, Sara Lloyd Stokes of Hartsville; two sons, Ronnie (Connie) Stokes of Wilmington, N.C. and Charles "Cotton" (Martha) Stokes of Hartsville; two daughters, Rebecca (Keith) Silvia, and Sherri Byrd, both of Hartsville; two step-sons, Jimmy (Pam) Smith of Hartsville and Heyward (Millie) Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, J. Carroll Stokes of Hartsville; special son-in-law, Bo Byrd and 12 grandchildren.

DOLPH MOZINGO SR.
BISHOPVILLE - Services for Adolph P. Mozingo Sr., 71, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Hebron United Methodist Church. The Revs. Mike Lupo and Carolyn Malphrus officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, 8800 Venice Blvd., Suite 207, Los Angeles, Ca. 90034 or Hebron United Methodist Church, Una Road, Bishopville, SC 29010. Mr. Mozingo died Sunday, Oct. 22. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Marvin and Eula Shirley Mozingo. He was a longtime member of Hebron United Methodist Church. He was a member and past master of Patesville Masonic Lodge #295, Omar Shrine, Red Fez and Jolly Jeepsters. He was a member of the Lee County Planning Commission, served on the Board of Directors of the Carolina Bank and Trust Company in Hartsville, and was the owner of Mozingo Farms, Inc. and Mozingo Liquors, Inc. Surviving are his wife, Louise Gilbert Mozingo of Bishopville; sons and daughters-in-law, Adolph Mozingo Jr. of Bishopville, Wayne and Ann Mozingo of Bishopville, Lewis Z. 'Zim' and Billy Mozingo of Florence; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Mozingo and Weldon Johnson of Bishopville; brother, Carol Mozingo of Bishopville; sister, Olivia Moyer of Blythewood; grandchildren, Tiffany Mozingo and Todd Mozingo; great-grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Mozingo and Noah Thompson Mozingo.

CLIFFORD C. DAY
Services for Clifford C. Day III, 66, of Hartsville, were held at 11 a.m. Monday morning, Oct. 23, 2000, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Kent Ingrum. Interment was in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 271 Middleburg Dr., Columbia, SC 29204 or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Ln., Columbia, SC 29210. Mr. Day died Saturday, Oct. 21. Born in Marion, N.C., he was the son of the late Clifford C. Day Jr. and Della Savannah Day. He was with the Columbia Police Dept. for five years and later owned and operated Classic Auto Rebuilders, Jaguar Assoc. of America. Mr. Day was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church and was a graduate of Camden Military Academy. Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth R. Day of Hartsville; two daughters, Sheron (Jerry) Weller of Fort Myers, Fla., and Carol (Bill) Budig of Granger, Ill.; and one grandchild, Tori Weller.

VIOLA H. STEVENSON
DARLINGTON - Services for Viola Hickman Stevenson were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in Center Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Boyd, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Lawson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington Mrs. Stevenson died Wednesday, Oct. 18, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Henry and Sudie McMillan Hickman. She attended Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Center Baptist Church where she was a faithful member serving on the Senior Choir and the Senior Missionary. She was married to the late Leroy Stevenson Sr. who preceded her in death in 1982. This union was blessed with 12 children. A daughter preceded her in death. Survivors include six daughters, Ella Mae Rush, Annie (Edward) James, Ola (Louis) Jackson, Ernestine (Bevern) Brown, Shirley (Robert) Eaddy and Christine (Henry) Mingo, all of Darlington; five sons, Johnnie (Margie) Hickman of Baltimore, Md., Levern (Debra) Stevenson of Trenton, N.J., James Stevenson of Richmond, Va., (Barbara Stevenson of Lamar) Leroy (Teresa) Stevenson Jr. of Darlington and Odell Stevenson of the home; a step-daughter, Clarice Pauley of Darlington; 34 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Marlene Ross, Ruby Goodson, Ruth Coe, Hannah Hudson and Janie Bell Kennedy, all of Darlington; four brothers, Henry Hickman Jr., Thomas Hickman of Darlington, Willie James Hickman of Richmond, Va., and Jasper Hickman of Bishopville; a dear friend, Mrs. Josephine Simmons; seven sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.
