COL. BOB SEGARS
CLOVIS, N.M. – Col. Robert Judson Segars, recipient of the Silver Star, passed away on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at his home in Clovis, N.M. after being diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. A memorial service was held at his church, Central Baptist Church in Clovis, on Monday, Nov. 12. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, Dec. 17 with full military honors.
He was the son of Chaplin (Ret.) Judson C. Segars, and the late Roberta M. Segars.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; five sons, a sister, Carole Jane Waina, and relatives in the area.
In October, Segars was presented with the second annual Mayor's Citizen of Character Award by Clovis Mayor David Lansford.
Lansford said the award celebrates Clovis citizens who exemplify six pillars of character identified by a selection committee – respect, citizenship, trustworthiness, caring, fairness and responsibility.
"I don't deserve it, " Segars told the Clovis News Journal in an interview before the award ceremony. He said the same thing about winning the Silver Star, the nation's third highest military decoration, in 1972, the News Journal reported.
Friends said Segars' humility did not stop him from making a positive and indelible mark on Clovis. They said he has worked tirelessly as an educator in the community, teaching political science and history at Clovis Community College and Wayland Baptist University. As a teacher, he touched the lives of thousands of people in which many came from Clovis High Schools' Air Force Junior ROTC program, which Segars headed as an aerospace science instructor. He also was active in community service through the United Way and the Rotary Club.
Friends said Segars has inspired others throughout his life – as a weapons systems officer who flew more than 200 combat mission during the Vietnam War, as a professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Armed Forces Staff College, as a father and as a friend.

Graveside services for Edward M. "Eddie" Bryant Jr., 48, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Tom Swilley and Billy Campbell will officiate directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Bryant died Wednesday, Nov. 28. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Alice Weaver Bryant and the late Edward M. Bryant Sr. He was retired from the Hartsville Police Department, a member of the Alpha 1 Association, the SCLEOA, the National Riflemen Association and a member of the Misfits.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Marie Bryant of Hartsville; a very special daughter, Rachel Green of Hartsville; daughter, Kristine Green of Dallas, Texas; mother of Hartsville; brother and sister-in-law, Robin F. and Gail Bryant of Hartsville; nephews, Jed Bryant and Rusty Bryant, both of Hartsville .
GEORGE L. BROWN
George L. Brown died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Providence Hospital in Columbia after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 2441 Trails Edge Road, Lamar.

Services for George Brown were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Kellybell United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Brown died Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Providence Hospital in Columbia after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Walter "Botchie" and Winnie Ann Blakney Brown. He was educated in the public schools. His early life was spent on the farm working with his parents and six siblings. He later worked with the International Mineral Corp. of Hartsville where he remained for 27 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Kellybell United Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Bennie Shirley Brown of the home; four daughters, Jarutha Brown, Melissa Brown and Barbara Brown, all of Hartsville, and Rachel BA. Brown of Lamar; four sons, George Brown Jr. of Hartsville, Williams A. Brown of Jersey City, N.J., Leon (Lori) Brown of Laurinburg, N.C., and Nathaniel Brown of Lamar; three brothers, Walter (Maxine) Brown of Hartsville, Edward (Valesa) Brown and Bobby (Jackie) Brown, both of Jersey City, N.J.; an aunt, Elizabeth Johnson of Hartsville; an uncle, Jessie (Margaret) Addison of Hartsville; 11 sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Eugene Brown of Lamar.

Mr. Boatwright died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001. Born in Polk County, N.C., he was a son of the late E. Thomas and Emma Privette Boatwright.
He was a member of Soul's Harbor Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
WADE H. DIXON
Funeral services for Wade H. Dixon, 69, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Edwards Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Ed Griggs and Marion Watkins will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Dixon died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Nancy Bell Player Dixon. He was a member of Edwards Chapel Baptist Church and was retired from Stanley Tools.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Elizabeth Johnson Dixon of Patrick; son, J. Ray Dixon of Ruby; daughter, Shirley D. Dixon of Patrick; brother, Earl Dixon of Patrick; sisters, Patty D. Gainey and Carrie D. O'Neal, both of Patrick; grandchildren, Briget Gibson, Heather Gibson, James Gibson and Tyler Gibson. He was predeceased by his sister, Irene Gilbert.

DARLINGTON – Graveside services for Kristoffer Sean Carter, 24, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Mr. Carter died Thursday, Nov. 29, in his Columbia residence. He was born
in Darlington County, the son of Jack Leslie Jr. and Tami Leach Carter. He attended Darlington High School and was employed in construction. Mr. Carter attended First Church of God in Darlington.
Surviving are his father and step-mother, Les and Debbie Carter of Darlington; his mother and step-father, Tami and Jimmy Smith of Darlington; a sister, Leslie Michelle Carter of Darlington; grandparents, Jack and Jean Carter, Leon (Sonny) and Kathleen Campbell and Mrs. Virginia Floyd, all of Darlington; and two step-brothers, David Vinnenberg and Christopher Vinnenberg, both of Darlington.

JAMES C. DUDLEY
Services for James C. (Jimmy) Dudley, 57, will be held at 7 p.m. this evening, Nov. 30, 2001, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Rev. Scarlett L. Tanner officiating. Family will receive friends following the service.
Mr. Dudley was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Robert Ansel Dudley Sr. and Mary Hopkins Dudley. He was a member of Twitty United Methodist Church and was a painter.
Surviving are one daughter, Christy D. Weatherford of Moncks Corner; step-son, Jessie Faulkenbury of Kershaw; sisters, Mrs. Peggy Brand of Hartsville and Mrs. Mary Louise Morse of Darlington; brothers, Robert A. Dudley Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and Larry J. Dudley of Gaston, S.C.; step-brother, Joseph McDaniel of Gaston, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

MINNIE L. PATTERSON
LAMAR – Services for Minnie Lee Patterson will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the Spaulding Jr. High School Gymnasium with Harold Sawyer officiating. Burial will take place in the St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Patterson died Sunday, Nov. 25, from injuries sustained after an automobile accident. She was born
in the Bishopville area of Lee County, a daughter of Dotten and Rosa Ann Jefferson Sweetenburg. She was educated in the Lee County public schools and graduated from Dennis High School with the class of 1967. She was married
to Henry Patterson and this union was blessed with five children. Mrs. Patterson was employed with Reeves Brothers for 12 years and was last employed with the Darlington County School System. She was first a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and later she attended St. John United Methodist Church. She was currently a student of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors in addition to her husband, Henry Patterson of the home, include her mother and father, Dotten and Rosa Ann Sweetenburg of Bethune; two daughters, Pamela Goodman of Hartsville and Taneka (Michael White) Patterson of Lamar; three sons, Norris Patterson of Lamar, Christopher (Brenda) Patterson of Florence and Stanley Patterson of Indianapolis, Ind.; four sisters, Sarah Gordon of Alexandria, Va., Ethel (Bill) Porter of Falls Church, Va., Catherine (Edmond) James of Cassatt and Tinnie Flemming of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Darvin Sweetenburg and Richard (Essie) Sweetenburg, both of Bethune and Charles (Frances) Sweetenburg of Bishopville; and seven grandchildren.
CHARLES SMITH II
GREENVILLE – Services for Charles "Chick" Aurelius Smith II, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 30, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in Greenville with Drs. Jeff Rogers and Baxter Wynn officiating. Burial will follow at Springwood Cemetery directed by Mackey Mortuary of Greenville.
Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Nov. 27, at St. Francis Hospital. He was born
on Jan. 20, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pa. As a boy he moved to Greenville with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Hugh P. Smith. He grew up on historic Earle Street and graduated from Greenville High School. He attended The Citadel, Davidson College and, as he liked to say, "ultimately escaped with a degree" from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
During World War II, Mr. Smith ferried planes for the Air Transportation Command of the U.S. Army Air Force. He few "the hump" into China and he landed planes, scattering the gooney birds, on Ascension Island in the Pacific. During the War, he met and married
Sara Elizabeth Stephens of Abbeville. Mr. Smith always said marrying Sara, who died in May, was "the smartest thing" he ever did.
For most of his professional life, Mr. Smith, who was a Chartered Life Underwriter, sold life insurance for Liberty Life Insurance Company. He was a great salesman and an exceptional story teller. Recently, a retired South Carolina Supreme Court Justice told one of his daughters that Mr. Smith was the best extemporaneous speaker he had ever heard, in the courtroom or not.
Mr. Smith was a life-long member of First Baptist Church. He was a founding member of the Greenville Sertoma Club and one of the original organizers of the Sertoma Club's annual Christmas tree sale. He was also active in the Greenville Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving for a term as its president. Mr. Smith loved hunting, fishing, and dogs. He was a president of the Greenville County Wildlife Association and a sustaining member of Ducks Unlimited.
He was a devoted husband to a wife who suffered a long and debilitating illness. He was a wonderful father to two loving daughters. He was, in all, a good man whose final words were that his life had been "blessed."
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Marguerite and Frank E. Willis of Florence and Anna Lee and L. Franklin Elmore of Greenville; his granddaughters, Marguerite and Sara Lawton Elmore; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Hugh P. Smith Jr. of Solvang, Calif., and Dr. and Mrs. J. Lawton Smith of Miami, Fla.

WILLIAM GIBSON
DARLINGTON – Services for William "Bill" Gibson will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in the Kistler Chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening, Wednesday, from 6 to 8.
Mr. Gibson died Sunday, Dec. 2, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Lancaster County, a son of the late Thomas Hood and Della Mae Thomas Gibson. He was a self-employed painter and attended the Darlington Church of God. Mr. Gibson was a good father and grandfather. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Gibson enjoyed Braves baseball and NASCAR racing.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Stegall Gibson of the home; one daughter, Patsy Blanton of the home; two brothers, Ted Gibson of Kershaw and Bobby Gibson of Lancaster; five sisters, Elizabeth Catoe of Kershaw, Nancy Pressley, Addie Mae Gibson, Lilian Bowers and Shirley Norris, all of Gastonia, N.C.; and two grandchildren, William Len Blanton and Christopher Patrick Blanton, both of the home.
