Ernest C. Garner
World War II veteran
Ernest Claude Garner, 79, of 207 Brookwood Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Woodruff Manor in Woodruff.
A native of Gaffney, he was the widower of Evelyn Frances Thornton Garner and son of the late Joe Garner and the late Nellie Ball Garner Robertson. He was retired from United Merchants (formerly Union Mill) and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a Mason and member of Gaffney Lodge No. 186.
Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Crocker and husband, Terry, of Gaffney, Linda Wilson of Gaffney, and Judy Anders and husband, Tommy, of Westminister; a sister, Annie Bell Fowler of Gaffney; a brother, Henry Garner and wife, Pat, of Gastonia, N.C.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Garner was preceded in death by brothers, Joe Dean Garner and Jimmy Garner, and sisters, Hattie Lee Lester and Lettie Heaton.
Services with Masonic Rites were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Benny Davis. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Brian Wilson, Mark Anders, Joey Anders, Ronnie Garner, Paul Lester, Kenny Fowler, Eric Garner and Philip Garner.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Gaffney Masonic Lodge No. 186.
The family is at the residence, 207 Brookwood Drive.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 110 S. Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302; or to Woodruff Manor LLC, 1114 E. Georgia Road, Woodruff, S.C. 29388.

Ellen S. Fuller
Services for Ellen Tate Savage Fuller, 104, of 300 Magnolia St., will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. L.C. Tate and the Revs. Tony Macomson, Lawrence Davidson and Dewey Whittenburg. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers and flower bearers will be her grandsons and granddaughters, respectively.

Candice S. Griffin
Gaffney native
Candice M. Short Griffin, 36, of 305 Elm St., died after a long illness on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg.
A native of Gaffney, Ms. Griffin was the daughter of Kenny and Elaine Short of Gaffney and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her four children, Joshua, Clay, Cayla and Micah; and a sister, Crystal Short, and her two children, K.T. and Jon Langston, all of Gaffney.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 2-3:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Floyd Baker Boulevard and the service will follow at the church.
The family is at the home of her parents, 103 Cambridge Circle.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.

Jerry Potter
Vietnam veteran
Jerry Walter Potter, 59, of 2508 Camp Creek Church Road, Mooresboro, N.C., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at his home.
A native of Rutherford County, N.C., he was the son of Hoyle and Mary Frances Hamrick Potter and was a retired welder. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Era and was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church and Cliffside Masonic Lodge No. 460.
Mr. Potter was preceded in death by two brothers, John Potter and Barry Potter.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Donna Crowe Potter, of the home; a daughter, Nicole Potter of the home; a grandson, Tyler Potter; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Camp Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Steve Durham, Ernie Cole and Paul Sorrells. Burial will be in Prospect Baptist Church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Camp Creek Baptist Church, 2323 Camp Creek Church Road, Mooresboro, N.C. 28114.

Melvin Jackson Jr.
Blacksburg resident
BLACKSBURG - Melvin Jackson Jr., 58, of 135 Canton Drive, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Mr. Jackson was the husband of Linda Ann Richards Jackson of the home and son of the late Melvin and Virginia Arledge Jackson Sr. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a brother, Leon Jackson, of North Carolina and a sister, Brenda Richards, of Gaffney.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Jackson.
The family will receive friends at the home of James and Ruth Richards, 146 Canton Drive, Blacksburg.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Flowers may be sent to 146 Canton Drive, Blacksburg.

Gladys C. Bratton
Cherokee County native
YORK - Gladys Childers Bratton, 82, of 261 South Herlong Ave., Rock Hill, formerly of Wright Avenue, York, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 204, in Rock Hill Healthcare.
Born on May 31, 1922, in Cherokee County, she was widow of Rush Clarence "RC" Bratton and daughter of the late Wardell Childers and the late Keula Parris Childers. A wonderful wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, and mother-in-law, she was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Gaffney, where she she served as church clerk and was a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Surviving are a son, C. Dean Bratton of Columbia; a daughter, Linda Pratt of York; a daughter-in-law, Susan Bratton of Columbia; a brother, Wendell Childers of Gaffney; two sisters, Mary Coyle of Gaffney and Lydia Lee of Saucier, Miss.; four grandchildren, Robin Ashley Johnston of York, Bobby G. Ashley of Raleigh, N.C., Bratton Pless and Alysia Nichols, both of York; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bratton was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Bratton Ashley; a son-in-law, Bob Ashley; two brothers, Adjuel Childers and Onnie Childers; and a sister, Elena Blanton.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Alan Peeler. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Bratton Funeral Home, 1455 Filbert Hwy., York.
Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, 500 E. Montgomery St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

Thomas Hampton Jr.
Retired teacher
GREENVILLE - Thomas Earl Hampton Jr., 85, of 100 Logan St., husband of Carrie Mobley Hampton, died Nov. 3, 2004, at 11:15 p.m. at Hospice House in Anderson.
He was a retired school teacher and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Israel Metropolitan C.M.E. Church.
Also surviving are a son, Thomas E. Hampton II of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, D'Letter Hampton-Shumate of Fairbanks, Alaska; and four grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Israel Metropolitan C.M.E. Church 307 N. Calhoun St., Greenville.

Elizabeth W. Childers
Retired textile weaver
Elizabeth Falls Whelchel Childers, 79, of 100 Spruce St., died today, Nov. 12, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Kings Mountain, N.C., she was the widow of Delmus Childers and daughter of the late Irvin Herman Falls and the late Ethel Eunice Patterson Falls. She was a member of Draytonville Baptist Church and a retired textile weaver.
Surviving are three sons, Tommy Whelchel of the home, Basil Whelchel Jr. and wife, Mary, of Gaffney and Paul Whelchel and wife, Bebe, of Blacksburg; grandchildren, Michael, Brian and Michelle Whelchel of Blacksburg; step-grandchildren, Teresa Thompson, Rebecca Macklem, Sherry Volz, all of Gaffney, Lora Brewer, Christina Schermerhorn and Angela Bowser, all of Michigan.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd Braswell and Chaplain Carroll Hutcheson. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary in Blacksburg and at other times they will be at the home.
Memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 37 Villa Road, Suite 109 (B-111), Greenville, S.C. 29615.

Gracie B. Moore
Former textile employee
Gracie Oveda Bell Moore, 62, of 312 Springwood Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at her residence.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Donald Eugene Moore Sr. and daughter of the late Walter Bell and the late Fannie Louise Irvin Bell. She was a former textile employee and a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Robin Scott of Pittsboro, N.C., Cindy Taber of Gaffney, Sharon Commanda of Bessemer City, N.C., and Judy Johnston of Matthews, N.C.; a son, Donnie Moore Jr. of Gaffney; two sisters, Nellie Yarborough of Blacksburg and Louise Wyatt of Gaffney; a brother, James Bell of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Bell.
Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Ronnie Cox, Matthew Roberson and Vernon Mullinax. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Slick Owensby, Shane Allen, Shawn Commanda, Rev. Matthew Roberson, Richard Taber, Bruce Diggs and Kit Johnston.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home.

Robert S. Wilkins
Former BRE employee
Robert Smith Wilkins, 73, of 904 Lyman St., died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Sue Ward Wilkins and son of the late Johnny Wilkins and the late Hattie Jefferies Wilkins. He was a former employee of Broad River Electric Company and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Robin Arrowood of Henrietta, N.C., and Jennifer Larsen of Lockhart; a sister, Betty Keller of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by Dr. Paul Noe.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-7 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home.
Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church Victory Campaign, 1508 Cherokee Ave., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
