Jermaine Jefferies
Services for Jermaine Jefferies, 24, of 102 Mascot Dr., will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Mount Sinai Baptist Church conducted by Drs. U.D. Vernon and James W. Sanders Jr. and the Revs. Lawrence Davidson and Danny Tate. Burial will be in Green Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Flower bearers will be Quinzette Posey, Ariel Petty, Connie Weeks, Dominique Tate, Stacy Adams, Queen Harris, Gwen Littlejohn, Casey Wood, Kissie Posey and Stevette Camp.
Pallbearers will be Woodrow Lipscomb Clayton Littlejohn, T.C. Coleman, O.J. Holmes, Shann Tate, Scott Coleman, Lorenzo Holmes, Ricky Hughes, Craig Littlejohn and Kenneth Crosby.
Surviving are his father, Gary Sims of the home; mother, Renee Jefferies Sims of the home; a son, Jermaine Jefferies Jr. of the home; a daughter, Da’Shonna Conley of the home; three brothers, Gary Jefferies of Gaffney, Kenny Ray Sims of Kershaw and Thomas Petty of Bennettsville; two sisters, Charmaine “Little Bit” Jefferies and Cassie Jefferies of Gaffney; grandmother, Betty Jo Sims of Gaffney; and great-grandmother, Nannie Mae Tracy of Clifton.
Foster Funeral Home is in charge.

Douglas M. Cody
Retired electrician
Douglas M. Cody, 58, of 110 McArthur St., died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Walter and Lois Guyton Cody and was a retired electrician.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela C. Porter of Gaffney and Tanya Jean Cody of Kingsport, Tenn.; two brothers, Jerry Cody of Dallas, Tex., and Kenneth Cody of Gaffney; a sister, Joanne C. Brown of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7:30-8:30 at White Columns-Gaffney and other times will be at the home.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Willie Lanier.
White Columns-Gaffney is in charge of arrangements.

Colby A. Richards
Colby Alexander Richards, 3-month-old son of Ricky Gene Richards Sr. and Gloria Paige Richards of 1034 Pacolet Hwy., died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at his home.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Ricky Richards Jr. and Adam Dakota Richards, both of the home; a sister, Ashley Richards of the home; maternal grandfather, Luther Adams of Gaffney; maternal grandmother, Gail White of Gaffney; paternal grandmother, Gennie Moss of Gaffney; maternal great-grandmother, Ethel Painter of Gaffney; maternal great-grandmother, Gertrude Sherrill of Gaffney.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel conducted by the Revs. L.B. Adams and Woodrow Steadman. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Richards Jr., Floyd Hall II, David Scruggs and Scott Coggins.
The family is at 512 6th St.

Ellawese Hillman
Active church member
SHELBY – Ellawese Parks Hillman, 40, of 1428 Clearbrook Dr., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., she was a member of New Vernon Baptist Church, Bostic, N.C., where she as a member of the Gospel Choir, the head of the Youth Ministry, a teacher of the Convert Class and a teacher of the Orientation Class. She was also a Hospice volunteer and graduate of Burns High School. She was formerly employed by J.C. Dyeing Company.
Mrs. Hillman was preceded in death by her father, Albert Parks Jr., and a brother, Albert Lewis Parks.
Surviving are her husband, Rev. Albert Hillman; mother, Doshia Beam Parks of Lawndale, N.C.; a son, Zachery Lumar Hillman of Shelby; three brothers, Bobby Parks, Leon Parks, both of Shelby, and Rev. Keith Parks of Lawndale; three sisters, Edna Hillman, Sarah Dawkins, both of Shelby, and Lisa Parks of Cherryville, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Vernon Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. James Smith and Albert Hillman. Burial was in Community Baptist Church, Lawndale.
Enloe Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

James O. Bishop
Former Spartan Mills employee
CHESNEE - James Oliver Bishop, 67, of 5964 Parris Bridge Rd., died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at his home.
A native of Spartanburg County, he was a son of Lizzie B. Bishop of Inman and the late William Marcus Bishop. He was a former Spartan Mills employee and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his father, Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by two sons, Paul Oliver Bishop and Michael Caroll Bishop; a grandson, John Michael Bishop; and a brother, Melvin Bishop.
Also surviving are three daughters, Sheila B. Wade, Julie B. Bishop, both of Chesnee, and Wanda B. Scruggs of Harlem, Ga.; a son, Joel Marcus Bishop of Statesville, N.C.; a sister, Shirley Cantrell of Chesnee; two brothers, Ernest Bishop of Chesnee and Billy Bishop of Inman; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Mortuary, Chesnee, with the Rev. Odell Mosley officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens with nephews serving as pallbearers.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Sheila B. Wade, 301 E. Cherokee St. (Hwy. 11).
Forest Lawn, Mortuary, Chesnee, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald T. Mullinax
Self-employed mechanic
MAYO – Donald Tommy “Duck” Mullinax, 29, of 201 Foxfire Rd., died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Hope Jordan Mullinax and son of Samuel and Mary Sue Campbell Harvey of Chesnee. He was a self-employed diesel mechanic and a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.
Also surviving are two daughters, Summer Nicole Mullinax and Daphine Starr Mullinax, both of the home; a step-daughter, Autumn Paige Eller of Cowpens; two sons, Christopher William Mullinax of the home and Austin Tommy Mullinax of North Carolina; four sisters, Jewel Pauley of Clinton, Melissa Diane Tabor of Chesnee, Patricia Mullinax of Gaffney and Marlene Mullinax of Mayo; three brothers, Larry Dean Mullinax, Timmy Joe Mullinax and Randy Scott Mullinax, all of Chesnee.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary with the Rev. Shane Belue officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice Special Needs, 120 Heywood Ave., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.
The family is at the home.

LaRue V. Goforth
Retired from Springs Industries
LYMAN – LaRue Vassey Goforth, 85, of 1501 Holly Springs Rd. died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Hospice House of the Upstate.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the wife of Haynes Carlisle Goforth and daughter of the late Luther C. and Carrie Belle Ray Vassey. She was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and the Tel Sunday School Class.
Also surviving are a son, Steve Goforth of Powdersville; three brothers, L.C. Vassey of Forest City, N.C., Russell Vassey and Carroll Vassey, both of Chesnee; two sisters, Evelyn Blackwell of Chesnee and Lethco Hamrick of Mooresburg, N.C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wood Mortuary conducted by the Rev. Jim Bates. Burial was in State Line Baptist Church cemetery, Chesnee.
Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 1600 Holly Springs Rd., Lyman, S.C. 29365; or to Hospice House of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Rd., Anderson, S.C. 29621.

Sarah B. Mitchel
Gaffney native
Sarah Bennett Mitchel, 66, of 705 Rippy Stream Rd., Durham, N.C., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in Durham.
A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Grady Bennett and the late Estelle Bennett.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Mitchel of Durham; a sister, Dorothy Bennett Reid of New York City; two brothers, Elbert Bennett of Asheville and Curtis Bennett of New York City; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at United Pentecostal Holiness Church in Durham.

Dorothy Bruce
New York native
Dorothy Stiles Bruce, 94, of Gaffney, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Gaffney.
A native of New York, she was the widow of Duncan Garden Bruce and daughter of the late Howard Stiles and the late Susan Harding Stiles. She was a housewife and of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Garnette (Sue) Walukewicz of Gaffney and Bobbie Gmvender of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Bertha Bruce of Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date.
The family is at 207 Crestview Dr.

Jerry W. Messer
Retired from Gaffney BPW
Jerry Wayne Messer, 54, of 385 Norman Blvd., died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Dorothy Messer and son of the late Robert Bonnie Messer and the late Berle Mathis Messer. He was disabled and retired from the Gaffney Board of Public Works where he worked in water and sewer maintenance.
Also surviving are a son, Joseph Edward Messer of Gaffney; four daughters, Lynn Pennington, Cindy McDaniel, Amy Guyton, all of Gaffney, and Christie Ledford of Shelby; two step-sons, Ronald Harrill of Gaffney and Robbie Harrill of Spartanburg; step-daughter, Susan Olhstead of Rutherfordton, N.C.; three brothers, Lawrence Messer, Tommy Messer, both of Gaffney, and Jim Messer of Montana; a sister, Terry White of Gaffney; and 15 grandchildren.
The family is at the residence. Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.

Viola Gooden
Mother of the Church at Limestone Missionary
Viola Gibbs Gooden, 96, of Gaffney died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Brookview Healthcare Center.
Widow of Walter E. Gibbs Sr. and the Rev. Doc Gooden, she was born in Cherokee County, a daughter of the late George W. Gibbs and the late Lillie Ellen Littlejohn Gibbs. She was a member of Limestone Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Mother of the Church and Sunday School pianist.
Surviving are a son, Richard C. Gibbs of Spartanburg; two daughters, Hattie Mae Shippy of Columbia and Martha G. Littlejohn of Gaffney; three sisters, Pauline Hutley of Brooklyn, N.Y., the Rev. Julia Tate of Gaffney and Lillie Ellen Thornton of Flint, Mich.; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Limestone Missionary Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. A.J. Smith. Burial will be in Limestone cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Flower bearers and pallbearers will be the grandchildren. Honorary bearers will be the deacons and deaconesses of Limestone Missionary Baptist Church.
The family is at the home of Martha Littlejohn, 1712 W. Buford St.
