DAEYONTE HOUGH

Funeral services for Daeyonte MaH'drieques (Boo Boo) Hough were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Salvation Temple Apostolic Holiness Church in Hartsville. Burial was in Sandy Bluff cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Daeyonte, 22 months old, was born in Darlington County, the son of Matthew and Manetra Hough–Stevenson of Hartsville.

Surviving to cherish his memories other than his parents of Hartsville are four brothers, Zantavious Hough, Matthew Stevenson Jr., Ke'Von Ketter, all of Hartsville and Domonique Peterson of Darlington; one sister, Mat'taeshia Stevenson of Hartsville; his maternal grandparents, Leon and Marynell Hough–Bacote; his paternal grandmother, Helen Stevenson, all of Hartsville; great–grandparents, Russell Hough Sr. of Bishopville, Herdicine Hough of Darlington and Mr. and Mrs. Belton Ella Joyner of Society Hill; one aunt, Shameka Hough of Darlington; and one uncle, Michael Hough of Darlington.

ROSIAR E. MATUSE

Graveside services for Rosiar Edward Matuse, 55, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Savannah Advent Christian Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Matuse died Tuesday, April 1. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Payton and Martha Lee Webb Matuse.

Surviving are five children, Larry, Boot, Judy, Elaine and Bob; a sister, Annie Bell Farmer; and two brothers, Willie and Payton Matuse.

HELEN D. REED

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Helen D. Reed, formerly of Dillon, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in a San Jose, Calif., hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, in Union Baptist Church in Trenton, N.J., with Hines Funeral Home in charge of local announcements. She was the sister of J. Floyd Davis of Hartsville.

JAMES W. THREATT

Funeral services for James Walton Threatt, 79, will be held today, Friday, April 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Threatt died Wednesday, April 2. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late James Norman and Minnie Ola Holley Threatt. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 43 years of service, a member of the Old Timers Club, Bethel United Methodist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Teal Threatt of Hartsville; a daughter, Mary (Bill) Lynch of Hartsville; three sons, Norman and Stephen Threatt of Hartsville and Raymond (Robin) Threatt of Florence; a brother, Frank Lewis Threatt of Griffin, Ga.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Threatt.

SUZANNE S. FITCHETT

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Funeral services for Suzanne Smith Fitchett, 70, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 4, 2003, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Myrtle Beach, where she was a longtime member. A graveside service will be held at Oakwood cemetery, Raleigh, N.C., at a later date with funeral arrangements entrusted to McMillan–Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach.

Mrs. Fitchett died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at her home in North Myrtle Beach while under hospice care. She was born in Raleigh, N.C., on April 6, 1932, a daughter of the late Mary McGee and Everett Laws Smith. She was educated in the Raleigh schools, St. Mary's School and Converse College, Spartanburg. She was married to Frank Edward Fitchett Jr. of Hartsville, where she lived for many years. The past 20 years she lived in North Myrtle Beach where she enjoyed a career in real estate.

She is survived by three daughters, Susan F. Cannon of Charleston, Dorothy F. (Gary) Jeger of Bluffton, Craig F. (John) Matsche of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Frank Edward (Ulli) Fitchett of Switzerland; a sister, Barbara S. (Roger) Cooley of Raleigh, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Allyn Webb, Amanda Webb, Ashley Atkinson, Brandon McDonald and Emilie Fitchett.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice of Horry County, PO Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, S. C. 29570.

POKEY WATKINS

Graveside services for John C. Pokey Watkins, 71, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Friday, April 4, 2003, at New Market United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Philip Watry will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the New Market United Methodist Church, 1909 W. Old Camden Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Watkins died Wednesday, April 2, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Major Aaron and Julia Mobley Watkins. He was a member of New Market United Methodist Church, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a retired used car dealer. He was a Shriner and past president of the Jolly Jeepsters. He was also a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173 and Moose Lodge No. 1770.

Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Keith A. and Janet Watkins of China Grove, N.C.; daughters, Theresa W. Quintero of Myrtle Beach, Wanda Watkins of Pineville, N.C.; brother and sister–in–law, Lukie and Sue Watkins of Hartsville; and granddaughter, Lauren Watkins.

TOM GAINEY

Funeral services for Jerome Tom Gainey, 75, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, April 4, 2003, at Hebron United Methodist Church. The Revs. Wayne Hodge and Buddy Amerson will officiate with burial in church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the Linda Gainey residence, 2274 County Line Rd.

Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, April 1, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Cornelius and Maggie Dixon Gainey. He loved to fish and work in his garden and he was a loving husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, Lillie Mae Gainey of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Dorothy Ann Gainey and Eddie Cassidy of Hartsville, JoAnn G. and Donald Watford of Society Hill, Nellie Mae (Nell) Gainey of Hartsville, Linda Gainey of Hartsville, CPO Robbie G. and T. J. Kivley of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister, Sara Frances Weatherford of Hartsville; brother, James Ray Gainey of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Gainey, his brother, Bobby Gainey, and his sister, Lois Hicks.

ED RAINES

Funeral services for Willie Edwin (Ed) Raines Jr., 84, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2003, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Colboch and Dr. Milton G. Frazier officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Raines died Saturday, March 29. He was born in Blythwood, a son of the late Willie Edwin Raines Sr. and Essie Irene Broome Raines. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was owner of Raines Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.

Surviving are his wife, Johnnie Outlaw Raines of Hartsville; a son, Bobby Raines; daughter, Lynn Raines, both of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Devin Raines of Hartsville and Lisa McKnight of Florence; one great–grandchild, Allie McKnight of Florence.

MILDRED T. BITTERMAN

MYRTLE BEACH — Funeral services for Mildred Tendall Bitterman, 80, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at McMillan–Small Funeral Home with Dr. Wayne Brown officiating. Burial followed in Ocean Woods Memorial cemetery.

Mrs. Bitterman died Sunday, March 30, at Grand Strand Health Care. She was born May 20, 1922, in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Dewy Brown and Christine Brown Cannarella.

She was an employee with the Chapin Company for more than 20 years, a member of the First Baptist Church, the D.A.V. Ladies Auxiliary, and the Order of the Amaranth.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Richard L. Bitterman and Preston Tendall; a brother, Robert D. Brown Jr. and a step–son, Richard J. Bitterman.

She is survived by a daughter, Sallie T. Eaddy of Longs; three step–daughters, Elizabeth B. Purdy, Janie B. Ripple and Lisa B. Canavan; her former son–in–law, David Eaddy of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, Hannah Hinds, Sarah Eaddy, Daniel Eaddy of Longs, and a great–grandchild.

Memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church, 500–4th Ave., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

CREOLA S. GREEN

Funeral services for Creola Slater Green, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Nelson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery in Oates Community, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Green, widow of Lemuel Green, died Wednesday, March 26, in a Hartsville nursing home after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late David and Edna Slater. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She began her religious life at St. John United Methodist Church and later joined Centenary United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully on the Administrative Board, Religion and Race Committee, United Methodist Women, Usher Board and was faithful to the Sunday School.

Survivors include a son, Harry Green (Valerie) ; a daughter, Laura Granville (Thomas) ; grandsons, Toney Green (Albertina) , Larry Green, Byron Carr, John Carr, Lemuel Carr, Darryl Davis, Kevin Graham, Harold Thompson; granddaughters, Barbara Spann, Evette Montgomery, Cheryl Williams, Sharn Spenser, Valerie Roberson; a host of great–grandchildren; two sisters, Christine McCoy (James) and Edna Mae Slater; a very special cousin, Dorothy Collins; nieces and nephews.

MARJORIE WINDHAM

LAMAR — Funeral services for Marjorie Carter Windham, 88, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Lamar First Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Ted Mears and the Rev. Ted Windham. Interment followed in Zion cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home of Lamar.

Mrs. Windham died Thursday, March 27, in Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital in Columbia. She was born in Sardis, daughter of the late John Milton and Corrina Bell Hudson Carter. She was married to the late Roy Pershing Windham. She was a housewife and member of Lamar First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons and daughters in law, S. Darius (Laura) Windham of Simpsonville and Randy (Janice) Windham of Lexington; one daughter, Ren Windham of Seneca; six grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren; five sisters, Rose Carter of Timmonsville, Dessie Kirby of Effingham, Evelyn Jones of Sumter, Gwen Stiles of Arkansas, and Alma Myrtle Reynolds of Tenn.

Mrs. Windham was preceded in death by brothers, Hudson, Carroll, Claude and Ralph Cater and sister, Mildred Carter.

Memorials are suggested to Lamar First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 431, Lamar, SC 29069.

ELIZA C. HAWKINS

Funeral services for Eliza Pauline Cassidy Hawkins, 96, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the chapel of Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Hawkins, widow of Harley Hawkins, died Thursday, March 27, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Gilliam C. and Eliza Brown Cassidy. She was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, M. L. Buddy and Rebecca Hawkins of Orangeburg, W. C. Hawkins of Summerton, Heyward C. Hawkins of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters and sons–in–law, Gwen B. and Charlie Enzor of Murrells Inlet, Sadie H. Kelley of Hartsville, Eulysis and James M. Griggs of Columbia; 14 grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren; five great–great–grandchildren.

TOM NEWSOME

FLORENCE — Funeral services for James E. Tom Newsome, 74, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Northgate Baptist Church with the Revs. Gerald McCants and Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial followed in Gum Branch cemetery, Hartsville, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Northgate Baptist Church Building Fund, 1217 N. Ebenezer Rd., Florence, SC 29501.

Mr. Newsome died Friday, March 28, 2003. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Wesley A. and Willie Blanche King Newsome. He was a member of Northgate Baptist Church and for 20 years served as the Sunday School superintendent for the Hartsville Gum Branch Baptist Church. He was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing and was also retired as an auto dealer. He was an avid bird hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Galloway Newsome of Florence; daughter and son–in–law, DeEtte and Wally Johnson of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; sister and brother–in–law, Joye and Luther Howard of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, John A. and Patsy Newsome of Newport, Tenn.; and granddaughter, Ashley Pechon.

BOBBY PETERSON

Funeral services for Bobby W. Peterson will be held at 3 pm. today, April 2, 2003, in Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mr. Peterson, husband of Betty Jean Thomas Peterson, died on Saturday, March 29 in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jerry and Mary Jackson Peterson. He was educated in the public schools and worked as a brick mason for over 30 years with David's Construction.

Survivors in addition to his wife of the home are four daughters, Ernestine Bishop, Barbara Peterson, Sylvia Pondexter, all of Hartsville, and Kim (James) Johnson of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, T. Arthur Peterson and Jackie (Sharon) Thomas of Hartsville; eight brothers, Larry (Rose) Peterson of Philadelphia, Pa., Brooks Peterson, Leslie (Martha) Peterson, T. James (Christy) Peterson, Joseph (Linda) Peterson, Carl (Ophelia) Peterson and Jerry (Angie) Peterson, all of Hartsville, and Michael (Lou Ella) Peterson of Rochester, N.Y.; five sisters, Elizabeth Robinson, Carolyn Myers, Cecelia (Gregory) Boone, Louise Mitchell, all of Hartsville, and Margaret (Phillip) Frierson of Long Island, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a son, Larry Peterson.
