LUCILLE B. HATCHELL

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lucille B. Hatchell will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the First Original Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mike McCauley and the Rev. Todd Parrish. Interment will be in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Wednesday, at the funeral home. The family will be at 575 Gilchrist Road, Darlington.

Mrs. Hatchell, wife of George E. Hatchell, died Monday, Aug. 4, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington County and was retired from Dixie Cup. She was a member of the First Original Free Will Baptist Church and was active and she loved her church family. She enjoyed her senior citizens groups in many area churches.

Surviving are her husband of Darlington; five sons, Fred (Elsie) Gainey of Darlington, Mitchell Gainey of Columbia, Harden (Debra) Gainey of Hartsville, Michael Hatchell of Myrtle Beach and Huey Hatchell of Darlington; two daughters, Carolyn Freeman of Columbia and Carol (Ed) Grooms of Darlington; a number of grandchildren and great–grandchildren; one brother, Clifton Pal Floyd of Darlington, and one sister, Mary Roscoe of Hartsville.

Memorials are suggested to First Original Free Will Baptist Church Teenager Fund, PO Box 441, Darlington, SC 29540 and Temple Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 287, Darlington, SC 29540.

LEON F. WILLIAMSON JR.

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Graveside funeral services for Leon F. Williams Jr., 81, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, in Grove Hill cemetery, Darlington, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Williamson was born in Darlington County, son of the late Leon F. and Florence Ruby Gilchrist Williamson. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Southwest Pacific. He retired from General Tire and Rubber Company and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Williamson was Methodist in faith.

Surviving are his wife, OhLyne B. Williamson of Greenville, N.C.; two sons, Leon F. Williamson II of Tampa, Fla., and William A. Williamson of Greenville, N.C.; one daughter, Linda W. Nobles of Sevierville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Leon F. Williamson IV, Christi A. Williamson, Ryan Johnston, Travis Williamson, Russell Williamson, Amanda Ennis and Mark Ennis; three great–grandchildren, Bryce Williamson, Carriann Bradley and Leon F. Williamson V; also one sister, Mary Alice Mundy of Laurens.

Mr. Williamson was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara W. Johnston.

RICHARD T. WOODS

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Richard Theron Woods, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Woods died Sunday, Aug. 3, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Union County, son of the late J. Booth Woods Sr. and Mattie Wood Woods. He was owner of Woods Television Sales and Service. Mr. Woods attended Coker College and was a member of Darlington Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Ann T. Woods of the home; two daughters and a son–in–law, Lynn Woods Cook of Florence, Harriet W. and Michael Ethridge of Mt. Pleasant; a step–daughter and son–in–law, Mary Margaret and Frank Pat Edwards Jr. of Darlington; six grandchildren and five great–grandchildren; a sister and brother–in–law, Nell and Cleland Reed of Greenville; and many devoted nieces and nephews and will be sorely missed by his daughter–dog Happy Woods.

Memorials are suggested to Darlington Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 311 Pearl St., Darlington, SC 29532 or Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

DOROTHY M. JACKSON

Dorothy Mae Jackson died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

FREDERICK E. GIBSON

Funeral services for Frederick E. Gibson, 42, formerly of Darlington, were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Nazareth Apostolic Church in the Centerville Community with Dr. V. M. Davis, pastor, officiating. Entombment followed in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mr. Gibson died Wednesday, July 23, in a Bridgeport, Conn., hospital after an illness.

Survivors in addition to his parents, Ernest Sr. and Jessie L. Gibson of Hartsville, include three sisters, Doris Griffin of Darlington, Shelby Johnson of Forest Park, Ga., and Vanessa Gibson of Bridgeport, Conn.; a brother, Ernest (Dora) Gibson Jr. of Hartsville; and many other relatives and very dear friends.

REV. JOHN FREEMAN

Funeral services for the Rev. John L. Freeman, 82, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 1, 2003, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Freeman died Wednesday, July 30. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Lawrence and Beulah Brown Freeman. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church where he was a former pastor, was a Sunday School teacher and a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are a daughter, Gail Wilkes of Hartsville; son, Mark Freeman of San Diego, Calif.; sister, Nellie Winburn; brother, Willis Freeman, both of Hartsville; and three grandchildren.

GRADY SKINNER

Funeral services for Grady Skinner, 80, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at Hebron United Methodist Church with the Rev. DeVere Williams officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Skinner died Friday, July 25. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Fred and Evelyn Smith Skinner. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church, a graduate of The Citadel, a veteran of World War II, and retired as a contractor.

Surviving are his wife, Paulette Gray Skinner of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, Tommy A. Skinner, Fred G. and Amy King Skinner, all of Hartsville; daughters, Tammie D. Moore and Ellen S. Blackwell, both of Hartsville; brother, Julius Skinner of Hartsville; grandchildren, Crystal D. Elmore, Joel H. Blackwell III, Kendall L. Skinner, Benjamin T. Moore, Chance H. O'Neal, Kameron Skinner; and great–grandchild, Jordan Elmore.

MAE WILKES

Funeral services for Mae Wilson Wilkes, 69, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ronnie Caulder will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilkes, widow of Maxie Wilkes, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Emma Byrd Wilson.

Surviving are her sisters, Pauline Crowley of Hartsville, Anna Dixon of Concord, N.C., Edith Munn of Hartsville, Ernestine Lloyd of Dovesville; brother, R. C. Wilson of Gatlinburg, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her son, Mitchell Wilkes.

EUPHALA J. KIRVEN

BOWMAN — Funeral services for Euphala Jordan Kirven, 92, were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Bowman with the Rev. Dean Fox and the Rev. Gary Briden officiating, with burial in Bowman cemetery, directed by Dukes–Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Mrs. Kirven, widow of George Hecktor Kirven, died Monday, July 21, at Jolley Acres Healthcare Center. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Clarence H. Jordan and Nancy Mazingo Jordan. Mrs. Kirven was a graduate of Antioch High School and attended Winthrop College. She retired from Benjamin's Department Store in Bowman as a salesperson and an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active in the Esther Sunday School Class and the Ladies Missionary Circle.

Survivors are daughters, Iyone K. (John Robert) Weathers of Bowman and Nancy (Carl) Shelton of Orangeburg; sons, George H. (Patsy) Kirven Jr., Phillip J. (Donna) Kirven and Donnie E. (Vivian) Kirven, all of Bowman; a brother and sisters–in–law, Howard and Frances Jordan and Virginia Jordan, all of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren; three step–grandchildren and six step–great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Bowman, SC 29018.

ROY SUGGS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Roy Suggs, 76, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Indian Branch United Methodist Church conducted by the Revs. Steve Zimmerman and Mike McAuley. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Suggs died Thursday, July 24, in a local hospital. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Samuel N. an d Lillian Iseman Suggs. He was a member of Indian Branch United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class where he served his church in many capacities over the years. Mr. Suggs retired from James Rivers after 34 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Suggs loved fishing and was a regular attendee at all Darlington High School sporting events. He was predeceased by his mother, Manning Ham Suggs.

Survivors include his wife, Aleen Suggs of the home; one brother, Willie (Vivian) Suggs of Darlington and one sister, Sue (Charles) Cole of Florence.

BABETTE R. PUPA

RALEIGH, N.C. — Funeral Mass for Babette Betty Pupa were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Our Lady of Lourdes in Raleigh, N.C., directed by Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Mrs. Pupa, wife of Walter Eugene, passed away peacefully at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C., on Wednesday, July 23. She was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on April 1, 1922, to the late Margaretta and Conrad Reichold. The family immigrated to a new life in America in 1925. Mrs. Pupa was a graduate of Delany Business College in New York City, N.Y. and a paralegal. She was also a former cheerleader, an avid bridge player and crotchetier, making hundred of baby blankets for charity.

She is survived by her sons, Walter Reichold Edward Reichold and Thomas Reichold; also Margaret Linda Jones Pupa and Mary Ruth Jones Pupa of Raleigh, N.C., and Linda Sue Clawson Pupa of Hartsville; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 2718 Overbrook Dr., Raleigh, N.C. 27608.

LILLIAN BARNETT

Funeral services for Lillian Best Barnett, 72, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Beck and Hazel Mixon officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barnett, widow of William Bill Barnett, died Friday, July 25, 2003. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Liston B. and Lissie Grantham Best. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Terry and Judy Beasley of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Billy and Delores Best of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Edna and Edward Porter of Sumter; granddaughter and spouse, Selena and Robbie Mooring; great–granddaughter, Kathryn Bailee Mooring; step–daughters, Lillie Ann Stewart of Lexington, and Brenda Floyd of Rock Hill. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leroy Best and Marshall Best, and her sister, Elizabeth B. Gaskins.

LORING BLACKMON

Funeral services for Loring Carlylse Blackmon, 90, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 200 at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bev Kennedy officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Boys Farm, 6655 Highway 34/121, Newberry, SC 29108.

Mr. Blackmon died Thursday, July 24, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late David Clarence and Mary McGee Blackmon. He was a charter member and member of the Board of Deacons of West Hartsville Baptist Church, and was superintendent of the Sunday Schools. He retired from Sonoco after 45 years, was a member of the Sonoco Old Timer's Club, Hartsville Woodworkers, and was Past Master of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Blackmon of Hartsville; daughters and son–in–law, Beth Blackmon of Hartsville, Kathleen B. and Joel Canada of Alpharetta, Ga.; sisters, Hattie Revell and Virginia Jordan, both of Hartsville, Mildred Andrews of Whitmire; five grandchildren; and six great–grandchildren.

PAUL WINBURN

Funeral services for Stephen Paul Winburn, 44, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Ladell Humphries will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Wednesday, July 30, from 5–7 at the residence, 121 W. Old Camden Hwy.

Mr. Winburn died Tuesday, July 29, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Nellie Freeman Winburn and the late William Jesse Winburn Sr. He was employed with Royster–Clark (Rainbow) Inc.

Surviving are his wife, Wayne Rivers Winburn of Hartsville; son, Joseph Winburn of Hartsville; daughter, Jessica Winburn of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; sisters, Janet Atkinson and Brenda Putnam, both of Hartsville; brothers, William Jake Winburn and John P. Winburn, both of Hartsville, and David C. Winburn of York.
