ROBERT E. HUNTER SR.

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Robert Edward (Bubba) Hunter Sr., 76, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in New Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Hunter died Sunday, June 15, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Preston and Margaret Graham Hunter. He received his education in the public school of Darlington County.

He was first a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and later joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Galey & Lord.

Surviving are three sons, Robert (Barbara) Hunter Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., James Hunter of Darlington and the Rev. Jordan (Kathy) Hunter of Marion; six daughters, Annie (Charlie Antonio) Brown of Florence, Emma (Reggie) Toney of Hartsville, Geraldine (Wilbert) Thomas, Margaret Hunter, Clara Johnson and Maudie (Preston) Zimmerman of Darlington; four brothers, George Walter Hunter of Washington, D.C., Franklin Hunter and Jerome Hunter, both of Darlington, and James (Earlene) Hunter of Society Hill; three sisters, Magnolia (Otis) Little of Hartsville; Nettie (Joe) Gant of Darlington and Lillian (James) Bodrick of Society Hill; 19 grandchildren, 10 great–grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MOEASE G. FUNDERBURK

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Moease Gainey Funderburk, 76, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Friday, June 20, 2003, at Edward's Chapel Baptist Church with burial in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mrs. Funderburk died Wednesday, June 18, at her home. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Shelton and Martha Johnson Gainey. Mrs. Funderburk was a retired insurance assistant with Abe Funderburk Insurance Agency. She was a faithful member of Edward's Chapel Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, WMU director, choir member and Bible School director. Mrs. Funderburk was married to the late Abe Funderburk and was also preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Hildreth, and by her five brothers, Gilliam, John, Merton, Leroy and Homer Gainey.

Surviving are five daughters, Helen F. (Dock) Winburn of Patrick, Jean Funderburk and Pat F. (Edwin Moon) Bazen, all of Darlington, Shirley F. (Pete) Redmond of Myrtle Beach and Betty Sue F. (Johnny) Quick of Society Hill; seven grandchildren, William B. Winburn II, Teresa Winburn Leonard, Tammy Austin, Chris Quick, Johnny Quick II, Sierra Quick and Jeff Chandler; seven grandchildren; a nephew, Charles (Joyce) Funderburk of Yellow Springs, Ohio; four sisters, Creola Taylor of Marshville, N.C., Geneva Steed of Camden, Ark., Faye Wase of Burlington, N.C., and Edna Warr of Hartsville; and special friends, Linda Hodge and hospice nurse Cindy Hurst.

BETTY JOHNSON

Funeral services for Betty Jean Jackson Johnson, 56, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Friday, June 20, 2003, in Hartsville Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jackson died Wednesday, June 18, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Columbus and Nellie Jackson. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of Hartsville Pentecostal Holiness Church, Usher Board, Altu Worker's and the choir.

Surviving are a daughter, Catherine Jackson of Hartsville; five sisters, Dorothy M. Jackson, Ernestine Jefferson, Jannie Mae Jackson and Beatria Primus, all of Hartsville, and Ester Jackson of Stanford, Fla.; two brothers, George B. Jackson of Hartsville and Nathaniel Jackson of Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren, a great–grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

ALEXANDER WHITE

Mr. Alexander White died Tuesday, June 17, 2003. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.The family will receive friends at the residence, 2793 Wood Duck Road, Hartsville.

RALPH T. ANDERSON

BETHUNE — Funeral services for Ralph Travis Anderson, 72, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, in Bethune Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Cockrell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.

Mr. Anderson died Friday, June 13. He was born in Bethune, a son of the late Claude R. and Louise Mobley Anderson. He was a graduate of Bethune High School and retired from Dupont in Lugoff. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Laurlei Hunter Anderson of Bethune; daughter and son–in–law, Laura Ann and David Stokes of Bethune and Amy and Gabriel Brown of Hartsville; granddaughters, Catherine Lau ren Ross and Amelia Grace Brown; grandsons, John Travis Ross, Josh Walter Ross and Garrett Colby Brown; and two brothers, Richard and Tracy Anderson of Bethune. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Von Anderson.

ROBERT BAKER

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Robert Baker were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at The Kingdom Hall of Darlington with brothers Willie Harvin and Herbert Small, officiating. Burial followed in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Baker died Thursday, June 12, in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Samuel and Era Scott Baker.

Survivors include two children and a sister, Christine Baker Blackmon.

EDDIE BLACKWELL

Funeral services for Eddie G. Blackwell, 62, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. John Smith and Jim Murray officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. Blackwell died Saturday, June 14, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of Claudia Steen Blackwell and the late Lawrence Blackwell. He retired from Sonoco after 25 years of service and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jean Blackwell of Hartsville; son, Glenn Blackwell of Hartsville; step–daughter, Debra Parks of Hartsville; mother, of McBee; nephew, Steve Blackwell of McBee; and niece, Sharon Earle of McBee.

LUCILLE GAINEY

Funeral services for Lucille Hunter Gainey, 78, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 East Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mrs. Gainey, widow of James T. Gainey, died Saturday, June 14, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late George Washington and Margaret Tyner Hunter Sr. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was so loving and giving to her family and friends.

Surviving are her sisters, Lula H. Howle of Hartsville, Lessie H. Ogle of Wilmington, N.C.; brothers, George W. Hunter Jr., Allen M. Hunter, Paul R. Hunter, James Rhenn Hunter and C. Gene Hunter, all of Hartsville; several nephews; and several nieces.

JOHN McNEIL

DOVESVILLE — Funeral services for John McNeil were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. McNeil died on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in a Florence hospital due to injuries sustained in an auto/bike accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Mrs. Corrine Williams McNeil and the late James McNeil. He attended the Darlington County public schools and attended with his family at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He lived all his life in the Dovesville Community, where he enjoyed doing yard work for different families in the community.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Corrine McNeil of the home; three brothers, Moses (Neta) McNeil of Conway, Willie (Patricia) McNeil and James McNeil Jr., all of Dovesville; three sisters, Becky Mae McNeil of Hartsville, Louise Richardson of Bishopville and Shirley Miller of Society Hill; brother–in–law, George Williams of Hartsville; sister–in–law, Delores McNeil of Dovesville; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Betty Ann Williams, preceded him in death.

JAMES FORTUNE

LAMAR — Funeral services for James Fortune were held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, at Gethsemane Apostolic Church in Lynchburg with Bishop Calvin McNeil, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar.

Mr. Fortune died Thursday, June 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Bishopville, a son of the late Joe and Elizabeth (Toney) Fortune. He was a farmer and was married to Eliza Toney Fortune. He was a member of Gethsemane Apostolic Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Eliza Fortune of the home, are five daughters, Betty (Roy) Daniels, Geraldine (Levern) Stuckey and Rosa Fortune, all of Lamar, Patricia (Harvey) Jones of Columbia and Josephine Sellers of Vance; six sons, Joseph (Nettie) Fortune, Bobby (Vera) Fortune, James (Tanya) Fortune, Leroy (Sharon) Fortune, Robert (Connie) Fortune and Larry (Cynthia) Fortune, all of Lamar; three sisters, Janie Mae Gibson of Hartsville, Lycenia Isaac and Shelie Fortune, both of Bishopville; a brother, Herbert Fortune of Bishopville; three sisters–in law, Janie Johnson, Agnes McLeod and Evelena Boyd; and 39 grandchildren.

Funeral services for James Braden Hopkins Jr., 60, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Green Hill Church of God of Prophecy. The Rev. Jerry Gainey officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 2955 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.

Mr. Hopkins died Saturday, June 14. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late James Braden and Nancy Hall Hopkins Sr. He was retired from Cheraw Yarn Mills.

Surviving are his sisters, Margaret H. Cranford and Linda H. Cranford, both of Hartsville; brothers, David Hopkins and Vernon Hopkins, both of Hartsville; and special friends, Charles and Juliene Atkinson.

MAGGIE WILLIAMS

Funeral services for Maggie Williams, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at St. Paul Spiritual Temple of Christ, Inc. Burial was in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Williams died Thursday, June 12, after an illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Jim and Ethel Richardson Jett. She grew up in Chesterfield and received her education in the public schools. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and mother of Galilee Temple Faith Ministry of Christ, Inc.

Survivors are three daughters, the Rev. Tressie Allsbrook, Ethel Lee Guy, Mary Ann Jackson, all of Hartsville; two sons, Ruffus Cherry and Johnny Cherry Jr., also of Hartsville; four sisters, Bertha Smith, Mazorine Davis and Evelyn Johnson, of Hartsville and Betty Jean Morgan of Columbia; 35 grandchildren; 25 great–grandchildren; five great–great–grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

TECH. SGT. BOBBY E. HEUSTESS (RET.)

Funeral services for Tech. Sgt. Bobby E. Heustess, (Ret.) , 67, will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 13, 2003, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ladell Humphries will officiate with burial in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 12, 2003, from 5–7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the CarolinaÕs Hospice, 121 E. Cedar Street, Florence, SC 29501–0550.

Mr. Heustess died Tuesday, June 10, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Hugh and Ellie Mae Gandy and the late Henry Heustess. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, was retired after 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the VFW, and retired from Nucor Steel.

Surviving are his wife, Theo Davis Heustess of Hartsville; brother, Tim Gandy of Hartsville; and grandson, Rick Byrd of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his son, Bobby Lynn Heustess, and daughter, Cheryl Lynn Byrd.

LAMAR — Mr. James Fortune died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. The family will receive friends at the residence at 1200 Sandy Grove Church Rd., Lamar.
