DALE LYNCH

FLORENCE — Memorial funeral services for Thomas Dale Lynch, 36, were held at 11 a.m Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Darlington Presbyterian Church, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Lynch died Saturday, Feb. 7, at Carolinas Hospital System. Born Aug. 11, 1967, in Charleston, he was the son of Anne Lynch Wilson and the late William Wannamaker Lynch. He was a graduate of Charleston Day School and Christ School in Arden, N.C. He received a BA from Presbyterian College in 1989. Mr. Lynch was a loan officer and attended Darlington Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Charleston, are his wife, Mary Payne Lynch of Florence; his two daughters, Katherine Anne Lynch of Greenville and Julie–Anne Payne Lynch of Florence; his sister, Rebecca Gray Wilson of Darlington; his grandmother, Anne Thomas Smith of Charleston; and aunt, Mrs. John Hertz Warren III of Charleston; his uncle, Mr. William Atmar Smith II of Shrewberry, N.J.; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lynch was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Merrill Lynch, and his brother, Capers Evans Wilson.

Memorials may be made to Owl's Nest Recovery Center, 1219 W. Evans St., Florence, SC 29505.

JAMES PATTERSON

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Funeral services for James La'Smooth Patterson Jr., 37, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Patterson died Tuesday, Feb. 3, in a New York City hospital after a long illness. He was born in New York City, a son of Harriet McIver Patterson and the late James Patterson Sr. He received his formal education in the New York public school system and spent all of his life in New York City.

Survivors include his mother, Harriet Patterson of New York City; a daughter, Giovanni Summers of New York; four sisters, Willistine (Warren) Wingate, Theola Patterson, Novnia Patterson (Lenard) and Mary Patterson (Vadus) ; nine aunts, Josephine Williamson, Nellie Parker, Elizabeth Love, Alice Myham, Pearl McIver, Frances Jenkins, Susie Samuel, Flora Lee Patterson and Mary Patterson; three uncles; Jake (Ann) McIver, Nelson (Mattie) Samuel and James Love; two great–aunts, Fannie Bennett and Agnes Jackson; eight nieces; four nephews; two grandnieces; a grandnephew; two godsisters; a special friend, Kim Summers of New York and a host of cousins.

The family is receiving friends at the home of a sister, Mary Patterson of 2133 Leavensworth Road, Darlington.

HEYWARD JONES SR.

CLYDE, N.C. — Service for Heyward Alton Jones Sr., 67, formerly of Columbia, will be held today, Feb. 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial at 3 p.m. in Magnolia cemetery, Hartsville.

Mr. Jones died Sunday, Feb. 8. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of Lula Mae O'Neal Garrison and the late Murray Jones. Known as a master plumber, he was well thought of and considered to be a great teacher and leader of men. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints.

A devoted husband and loving father, Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Annette Horne Jones; sons, Alton Jones and his wife, Laura, of Lexington, Darryl Duston Jones of Eastover, Tanton Jones and his wife, Tina, of Eastover; daughters, Katrina Jones of North Myrtle Beach, Melissa Williams and her husband, Charlie, of St. Augustine, Fla.; his mother of Lugoff; step–children, Pamela C. Roberts and her husband, Terry, of Clyde, N.C., and Matthew O. Grainger and his wife, Stacey, of Loris; and grandchildren, Carlos Jones, Heather Williams, Ashley Williams, Kyle Williams, Malcom Johns, Kaylie Jones, Ethan Grainger, Sean Grainger, Brittany Martinez and Brandy McKenzie.

MARGUERITE DOUGLAS

Graveside services for Marguerite Vick Douglas, 83, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 11, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Ben Gafford will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Douglas, widow of Horace Douglas, Jr., died Sunday, Feb. 8. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late James Ulysess and Pearl Ann McFarland Vick. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Larry Douglas, Dennis and Gayle Douglas, and Alton Douglas, all of Hartsville, daughter and son–in–law, Linda and Boyd Tolson of Hartsville; brothers, James Vick of Durham, N.C., William Vick of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Vera Dearing of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Donald Douglas, Graham Douglas, and Denise Douglas.

VIVIE SELPH

Funeral services for Vivie Hines Selph, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints with Brother Jackie Jones officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Selph, widow of Leo L. Selph, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004. Born in Marlow, Okla., she was a daughter of the late Fred and Maud Monds Hines. Raised on a farm with six brothers and five sisters, she learned the value of hard work and honesty in her youth. She was attending college and working in the base library at Ft. Sill, Okla., when she met her husband, Leo. They were married in Oklahoma on July 24, 1943, and then moved back to the Hartsville area.

She worked at the Hartsville Cotton Mill and retired from Sonoco Products in 1986. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints, she loved working with the youth and teaching. She had a testimony that Jesus Christ was her Savior and her life was filled with Christian service to others. Vivie served as a volunteer at Byerly Hospital, was involved in helping adults learn to read and was a recipient of the Living Well Award and recipient of TV 13's Giving your Best Award.

Surviving are her son, Wayne Selph of Park City, Utah; daughter, Janette Selph of Hartsville; sisters, Cathy DeRoin of Broken Arrow, Okla., Freda Sharp of Bakersville, Calif., Sue Ross of Marlowe, Okla.; brothers, M. T. Hines, J. W. Hines, both of Duncan, Okla., Fred Hines of Tuscarora, Md.; nine grandchildren; nine great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Ronnie Selph.

LOUISE McKAY

DARLINGTON — A graveside service for Louise McKay, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 11, 2004, in Grove Hill cemetery conducted by the Rev. Steve Zimmerman and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. McKay died Monday, Feb. 9. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Rose Malloy O'Neal. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great–grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel L. McKay of the home; one son, Samuel David Sam (Sylvia) Middleton of Darlington; two daughters, Diane (David) Short and Susan (Johnny) White, both of Darlington; one brother, Ed (Mary) O'Neal of Hamlet, N.C.; five sisters, Betty (Guy) Ward of Rogersville, Tenn., Eunice (John) Prevatte of Darlington, Marion Gagmon of Laurinburg, N.C., Mary Blackburn of Orgeon and Murtis O'Neal of Aberdeen, N.C.; four grandchildren and five great–grandchildren.

MARY A. GARDNER

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Funeral services for Mary Agnes Boston Gardner, 57, formerly of Darlington, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 11, 2004, in Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ with Bishop Kenneth J. Swaringer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gardner, widow of Blease Gardner Sr., died Thursday, Feb. 5, in a Philadelphia hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Arthur and Virginia Lunn Boston.

She was a graduate of Mayo High School and was a member of Gethsemane Apostolic Church. After marriage, she moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where she worked for the City of Philadelphia Department of Recreation and for Carson Valley School working with incorrigible children.

Survivors include five children, Joseph (Tammy) Gardner of Willingboro, N.J., Jacqueline Gardner of Philadelphia, Pa., Tonya (Anton) Talley of the home, Valisa (Akinkunle) Somoye of Levittown, Pa., Shavon Gardner of Williamsport, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; a great–grandson; six sisters, Julia (Freddie) Ervin of Florence, Rena (James) Ranger of Chicago, Ill., Patricia Boston of Philadelphia, Pa., Joann (Charles) England of Gainesville, Fla., Wendy (Hamilton) McClain, Cindy (Edward) Burton, both of Florence; three brothers, Arthur Boston Jr. of Columbia, Edward Boston of Philadelphia, Pa., and Sylvester (Tonja) Boston of Irmo; mother–in–law, Mary Gardner of Willingboro, N.J.; four brothers–in–law; a sister–in–law; two special aunts, Rose Gardner and Sadie Mack of Baltimore, Md.; three aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

MICKEY A. TURNER

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Mickey Aubrey Turner, 56, were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, in Florence National cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Turner died Wednesday, Feb. 4. Born in Dillon County, he was the son of Mortaman and Christmas Turner. He worked for Atkinson Trucking Company. Mr. Turner enjoyed gardening, racing, photography and collecting Coca Cola memorabilia. He was an avid supporter of the Huddle House in Darlington. Mr. Turner was predeceased by one daughter, Sarah Hawthorne.

Surviving include four sons, Mickey Aubrey Turner Jr., Michael Aubrey Turner, Dwayne Allen Campbell and Brian Aubrey Turner; seven daughters, Catherine Turner, Sandra Lee Turner, Bambi Allison Turner, Laura (Tyson) Kennedy, Amanda Rae Altman, Nikki (Robbie) Blackman, and Crystal Rae Turner; two brothers, Jimmy (Rhonda) Turner and Danny (Dawn) Turner; one sister, Frances Turner; and seven grandchildren.

HANNAH MAE O'NEAL

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Hannah Mae Guy O'Neal were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Daniels, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. O'Neal, widow of Carrigan O'Neal Sr., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, in a Darlington hospital after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John and Golden Bryant Guy.

She attended the Darlington County public schools and Florence–Darlington Technical College. She was employed at Wilson Medical Center as a nurse assistant and retired after 30 years of service. She was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and a Watchcare member of Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by three sons, James, Jimmy and Charles.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary O'Neal Butler, Dorothy O'Neal McFadden and Marjorie (Bert) Dixon, all of Darlington; two sons, Carrigan O'Neal Jr. of Darlington and Elias (Lizzie) O'Neal of Corsicana, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Zeda Carroway of Hartsville; two brothers, Brodous (Bee) Guy of Newark, N.J., and Winston Churchhill Guy of Elizabeth, N.J.; 22 grandchildren; 23 great–grandchildren; one great–great grandchild; a dedicated grandson Anthony McFadden of Hartsville; special niece and nephew, Willia Mae Banks of Elizabeth, N.J., and Willie (Virginia) McDaniel of Darlington; many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

JENKINS KELLY

Graveside services for Jenkins Kelly, 80, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Kellytown Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Jim Beck officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Kelly died Saturday, Feb. 7. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Shelton Buck and Fannie Walters Kelly.

Mr. Kelly loved his wife, family, mother, friends and was retired as a farmer and carpenter. Surviving are his wife, Ina Wallace Kelly of Hartsville; sons, Mark and Jamie Bouchette of Andrews; daughters, Lisa Tucker of Andrews, Elizabeth Knipes of Conway; sisters, Maggie Freeman of Darlington, Winnie Munn of Hartsville, Alice Smith of Bishopville; four grandsons and a granddaughter.

WILLIE DIXON

Graveside services for James Willie Dixon, 86, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Green Hill Church of God with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Dixon, widower of Dianne Inez Kelley Dixon, died Saturday, Jan. 31. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of James and Fannie Dixon.

Surviving are his step–son and spouse, G. W. and Jerdgie Mae Smothers of Hartsville.

MONROE TIMMONS

Funeral services for Monroe Hampton Timmons, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2004, at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Peter Rivera and Rodger Martin will officiate with entombment in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves, Florence, SC 29506.

Mr. Timmons died Tuesday, Feb. 3. Born in Florence, he was a son of the late Wallie Clarence and Louise White Timmons. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Timmons Mini Mart. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Hall Timmons of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, Dan Timmons and Don and Lori Timmons, all of Hartsville; daughters, Ann Timmons and Pam Yates, both of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Pearl and H. B. Hunt of Hartsville; brothers, Harold Timmons and Charles Timmons, both of Darlington; grandchildren and spouses, Christopher Timmons, Summer Timmons, Donna and Shawn Laurie, Donnie Timmons, Jamie Timmons, Nikki and Kevin Moore, Robert Little, Denny and Angie Ashby; eight great–grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Timmons.

SAM R. STEEN

Funeral services for Sam Raymond Steen, 77, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2004, at Clyde Church of God. The Rev. Don Childers will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Steen, widower of Marie Winburn Steen, died Tuesday, Feb. 3. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Flynn and Minnie Gainey Steen. He was a member of Clyde Church of God. In his earlier years he was employed with Sonoco Products Company. He then went on to become a journeyman carpenter building churches and houses. Seasonally he operated a produce stand in Manning. Sam will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his sons and daughter–in–law, the Rev. Bobby and Faye Steen of Darlington, Billy Steen and Kenny Steen, both of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Margie and Ronald Brown, Shirley and Byron Huggins, all of Hartsville; sisters, Irene Gainey of Orangeburg, Bertha Douglas of Camden; brothers, Buck Steen of Orangeburg, David Steen of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; 19 great–grandchildren; special friend, Lourene Davis of Hartsville.
