LARRY COE

Larry Coe died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

WILLIAM McCASKILL

Funeral services for William B. (Pee Wee) McCaskill, 46, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Union United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Union cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. McCaskill was born in Darlington County, a son of William F. (Billy) and Elizabeth (Lib) Beasley McCaskill. He was a member of the Union United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jamie Cowick of Bethune; his parents of Hartsville; a sister, Frankie M. Carter of Darlington; granddaughter; niece, Michelle Norton of Darlington; nephew, Doug Carter Jr. of Florence; and companion, Sunnie Kay Barfield of Hartsville.

ANDY MOORING

LAMAR — Funeral services for Anthony Handy Andy L. Mooring, 49, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, in Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel, with burial following Wednesday, at 3 p.m. in Snow Hill cemetery, Snow Hill, N.C.

Mr. Mooring died Saturday, Jan. 31, in a local hospital. He was born in Snow Hill, N.C., son of the late Charlie and Katie Britt Mooring. He was owner of Handy Andy's Home Improvement and loved gardening, fishing and helping people. Mr. Mooring was a member of Fair Hope Church.

Surviving are his wife, Dana Hechel Mooring of Lamar; a son, Robbie (Selena) Mooring of Darlington; a daughter, Tracie (Jason) McCoy of Columbia; two grandchildren, Elizabeth McCoy and Bailee Mooring; three brothers, Billy Mooring, C. B. Mooring and Johnny Mooring, all of Snow Hill; three sisters, Faye M. Strickland of Snow Hill, N.C., Kathy M. Price of Deep Run, N.C., and Anne M. Davis of Dudley, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

MARJORIE REASON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Marjorie Celestine Mitchell Reason were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, in Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. W. Kelly officiating. Burial followed in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reason died Saturday, Jan. 31, at her residence after a long illness. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Callis Sr. and Annie Frazier Mitchell. She was a graduate of Mayo High School Class of 1941 and continued her education at S.C. State College. She was a life member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she was past member of the Senior Choir and Sunday school teacher. In 1988 she received a 50–year membership plaque.

For several years, she lived in Bryn Mawr, Pa., where she met and married Johnnie Reason. After returning to Darlington, she worked various jobs as a librarian at S. Main St. Darlington County Library.

Survivors include three daughters, Maryann Reason of Philadelphia, Pa., Marjorie C. Reason and Johnny Pat Reason, both of Darlington; two granddaughters, Natasha Pollard of Philadelphia, Pa. and Antwonette (Gregory) Sawyer of Charlotte, N.C.; two great–grandchildren, Shaikeem and Breize Sawyer; three sisters–in–law, Mary Miller of Philadelphia, Pa., Elizabeth Ivey of Pasli, Pa., and Ethel R. Mitchell of Darlington; two grandnieces, Latoya Mitchell and Kathryn Mitchell–Tyler; grandnephew, Derek Brown; special aunt and uncle, Nettie and Oscar Uzzle of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; special cousins, Mamie Byrd of Darlington and Betty (Burtis) Campbell of Goose Creek; several other cousins.

A brother, Callis M. Mitchell Jr., preceded her in death.

LENA H. HOWLE

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lena Hobson Howle, 94, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Terry Beckom and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Pine Grove UMC cemetery.

Mrs. Howle was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late William Barney and Sarah Jane Lloyd Hobson. She was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school class. Mrs. Howle was a member of Bertha Alexander Sunday School class and sang in the choir. She enjoyed gardening and was active with the Clemson Extension Service Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. Howle was married to the late James S. Howle.

She was predeceased in 1995 by a daughter, Mary Howle Isgett; four sisters, Margaret Manship, Jessie Weeks, Bonnie Wearne and Louise Cutter, and one brother, William Hobson.

Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Howle Brown of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Rev. Terry Beckom, 2635 S. Center Rd., Timmonsville, SC 29161.

SONNY SHERRILL

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Willie Sonny Archiebald Sherrill Jr., 70, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, in Mechanicsville Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Sherrill died Wednesday, Jan. 28, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Willie Archiebald and Helen Elsie Knotts Sherrill Sr. He was married to the late Lenora Ann Sherrill. He served his country with the United States Marine Corps and was a farmer. Mr. Sherrill was founder and president of COOT's (Cashua Organization of Old Timers) . He was a member and deacon emeritus at Mechanicsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Sydney (Bill) Bollinger and Shawn (David) Presley, both of Darlington; grandchildren, Kip Moody, Courtney Lloyd, Sean Moody and Stephanie Presley; great–grandchildren, Roy Lloyd, Sarah Ann Lloyd, Cameron Moody and Felicity Ann Thompson; a brother, William (Emma Lena) Thomas Sherrill of Darlington; two sisters, Billie S. Norwood and Helen (Thomas) Moody, both of Darlington; also several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sherrill was preceded in death by a son, Robert Scott Sherrill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Mechanicsville Baptist Church Building Fund, 2364 Cashua Ferry Road, Darlington, SC 29532.

BILLY HOOTEN

FLORENCE — Graveside funeral services for Billy Hooten, 55, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Lamar.

Mr Hooten died Thursday, Jan. 29. He was born in Darlington County, son of Thelma Bell Hooten and the late Joe Sam Hooten. He was a 1969 graduate of McClenaghan High School and served his country in the United States Army. He was employed by General Electric for 18 years.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Florence are one brother, Paul Hooten, also of Florence; four sisters, Dorothy (Larry) Cromer and Patricia (Alan) Taylor, both of Florence, Joann Page of Darlington and Thelma (Wilbur M.) Russ of Coward; also four nieces, nine nephews and 15 great–nieces and nephews.

ERNEST RICHARDSON

Funeral services for Ernest Richardson, 54, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 4, 2004, at Salvation Temple Apostolic Holiness Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Richardson died Saturday, Jan. 31, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an illness. He was born April 3, 1949, to the late Arthur and Rosa Jackson Richardson in Darlington County. He received his education in Darlington County public schools. He worked at Cargill in Hartsville and attended Salvation Temple Apostolic Holiness Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Lanie (Roy) McPhail of Hartsville; four sons, Joseph (Felicia) Brunson of Florence, Willie Lawrence Richardson, Toney Richardson and Quincy Richardson, all of Hartsville; one sister, Melissa (Mog) Bolden of Hartsville; two brothers, Roland Richardson and Algae Richardson, both of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; one great–grandchild, and a host of other closer relatives and friends.

JUDY P. DuBOSE

LAMAR — Funeral services for Judy Parnell DuBose, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Lamar with interment following in Lamar cemetery.

Mrs. DuBose died Friday, Jan. 30, in a local hospital. She was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Brooks and Thelma Parnell. She was married to the late Tom DuBose. Mrs. DuBose was a member of Christian Pathway Church. She was a devoted mother and taught Sunday school for over 40 years.

Surviving are a son and daughter–in–law, Jerry and Beth DuBose of Lamar; a daughter–in–law, Martha J. DuBose of Lamar; seven grandchildren and six great–grandchildren; a sister, Rose Taylor of Lamar; two brothers, Boykin Parnell of Florida and Brooks Parnell of Bishopville.

Mrs. DuBose was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Thomas DuBose, and a daughter, Terry D. Graham.

Memorials may be made to Christian Pathway Church, 101 Chapel Hill Rd., Lamar, SC 29069.

ORENTHIUS A. ROGERS

ATLANTA, Ga. — Funeral services for Orenthius Rimp Albertus Rogers, formerly of Hartsville, will be held 1 p.m. today, January 30, 2004, at Centerville A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens, with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The Rogers Family will receive visitations at the home of his maternal grandmother, Florrie Thomas Lighty, 2341 N. Center Road.

Mr. Rogers was born Oct. 15, 1977, a son of Malcolm and Patricia Coe Rogers. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County where he graduated from Hartsville High School with the class of 1995. He was a diligent member of the NAACP Youth Council and a member of the Hartsville High School Marching Band. After graduation, he matriculated at South Carolina State University where he was an active member of The United Voices of Christ, a Peer Educator and a member of the Presbyterian Student Association. He attended Centerville A.M.E. Church where he was a member of the Junior Usher Board and the Young Adult Choir. He later moved to Atlanta, Ga., and attended the New Birth Church. Mr. Rogers was employed as an administrative and financial assistant at New Life Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga.

He is survived by his parents Malcolm and Patricia Coe Rogers, both of Hartsville; one sister, Stacy (Andre) Watkins of Waco, Texas; one brother, Damon Lamont Rogers of Hartsville; paternal grandfather, Albertus Rogers of Hartsville; maternal grandmother, Florrie (William) Lighty and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.

PATRICIA A. TAPSCOTT

NEWMAN, Ill. — A memorial funeral service for Patricia A. Tapscott, 62, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Joines Funeral Home in Newman, Ill., with the Rev. Duane Oakley officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Tapscott died Monday, Jan. 26, at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, Ill. She was born Sept. 4, 1941, in Hartsville, a daughter of John and Maggie Barefoot Flowers. She married Russell Tapscott on May 17, 1961 in Darlington.

Surviving, including her husband, are three sons, Russell C. Tapscott of Ridgefarm, Ill., John R. Tapscott of Hartsville and David S. Tapscott of Newman, Ill.; two daughters, Patricia F. B. Tapscott and Brittany Tapscott, both of Newman, Ill.; three grandsons; two brothers, Rush C. Flowers of Cheraw and Ted Flowers of Hartsville; two sisters, Margaret Blackwell and Carolyn Waters, both of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

JoANN TYNER

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for JoAnn Hicks Tyner, 66, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in Pine Grove United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Tyner died Monday, Jan. 26, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ben and Polly O'Neal Hicks. She was co–owner of Carolina Hardware with her husband and was a devoted housewife. Mrs. Tyner was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church were she was on the administrative board, sang in the choir and was a teacher in the children's department as well as a Sunday school teacher.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, James O. Tyner Sr. of Darlington; one son, Jamie O. Tyner Jr. of Darlington; a daughter and son–in–law, Lynn and Doug Gehrke of Darlington; five grandchildren, Brandon, Brook and Kacie Gehrke and Trey and Bradley Tyner.

Mrs. Tyner was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ruth Brasington, and a brother, L. B. Hicks.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Terry Beckom, 2635 S. Center Rd., Timmonsville, SC 29161.

ROSANNA McKNIGHT

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Rosanna McKnight, 90, of Darlington, formerly of Kingstree, were held at 12 noon Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Faith Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. W. Kelly officiating, with burial following, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Ms. McKnight died Thursday, Jan. 22, in a Florence nursing home after a long illness. She was born in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Adam and Nancy Cirus McKnight Sr. She received her education in the Williamsburg County public school system. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was a farmer.

Survivors include a brother, Willie James McKnight of Darlington; two nephews, Donald (Sharon) Jackson and Ronald (Cynthia) Jackson, both of Darlington; two great–nieces and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Adam McKnight, Abe McKnight, George McKnight and Paul McKnight.
