JULIA DeLOACH

COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Julia Murdock DeLoach, 85, of Columbia will be held Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Elmwood cemetery in Columbia with the Rev. Dr. Jerri Parris Perkins officiating, directed by Dunbar Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home's Devine Street chapel.

Mrs. DeLoach died Wednesday, Feb. 18, following an illness. She was born in Columbia, the daughter of Nannie Pearl Hall and William John Murdock. She was an honor graduate of the University of South Carolina class of 1939.

Mrs. DeLoach was a lifelong member of Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Harris Eugene DeLoach Sr. of Jackson, Tenn.

Surviving are one daughter, Julia Ann Pangle of Irmo; sons, John Murdock DeLoach and his wife, Vicki, of Folly Beach and Harris Eugene DeLoach and his wife, Louise, of Hartsville; eight grandchildren and a great–grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church, 1103 Laurel Street, Columbia, SC 29201; The Presbyterian Home, 801 Musgrove St., Clinton, SC 29325 or to a charity of your choice.

ANNIE KING CLAWSON

Graveside services for Annie King Moorefield Clawson, 88, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Clawson died Friday, Feb. 13. Born in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of the late John Green and Annie King Moorefield. Mrs. Clawson received her A.B. from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, now UNCG, and taught for many years in the public schools in Hartsville.

Surviving are her husband, Robert G. Clawson of Charleston; sons and daughters–in–law, Robert G. and Helen Clawson Jr. of Charleston, Samuel R. and Betsy Clawson of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Elizabeth Moorefield of Rural Hall, N.C.; grandsons, Robert G. Clawson III of Charleston, Samuel R. Clawson Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, Carter Clawson of Mt. Pleasant; granddaughters and spouse, Margaret L. Clawson of Atlanta, Ga., Helen M. and Julian Martinez of Guadalajara, Mexico, Kelley C. and Timothy Ford of Winston–Salem, N.C., Frances E. Clawson of Phoenix, Ariz.; great–grandchildren, Heather Ford, Brittany Ford, both of Winston–Salem, N.C., Alexa Sofia Martinez of Guadalajara, Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her son John King Clawson.

CLARA PEAVY

Funeral services for Clara Bernice Griggs Peavy, 77, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. William Marvin Griggs officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Peavy died Saturday, Feb. 14. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Ruth Linton Griggs. She was known as the lovely Miss Clara Peavy.

Surviving are her son, Robert Douglas Peavy of Black Mountain, N.C.; daughter, Jean Carter of Murrells Inlet; sisters, Virginia Tyner and Gladys Gainey, both of Patrick; brothers, Lemuel Griggs and Hubert Griggs, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Barry Peavy, Michelle Ingram, Genelle Moody, Jill Ingram, Jessica Atwood; and four great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Sandy Griggs, and her sister, Alma Hunter.

RICHARD BYRD

Funeral services for Richard Byrd, 59, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bud Boatwright and Grover Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Byrd died Friday, Feb. 13. Born in Dillon County, he was a son of the late Frank Ellerbe and Nettie Vann Byrd. He was retired from CSX Railroad, served in the National Guard and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Warr Byrd of Summerton; son and fiancŽ, Richard Ellerbe Byrd and Michelle Shoemake and her son Brent Lewis Shoemake, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Melissa Byrd and Melton Lloyd of Hartsville, Michelle Byrd and Michael Leviner of Manning; sister, Mary Byrd Winburn of Florence; brothers and sister–in–law, James A. Byrd of Washington, D.C., Jerry Byrd of Patrick, Frank Byrd Jr. of Mechanicsville, Harvey and Katie Byrd of Dovesville; and granddaughters, Leanna Rose Leviner, Emily Grace Leviner, both of Manning.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles Byrd and Purvis Byrd, and his sisters, Frances Windham and Ruth Byrd.

JESSE DUNDY

Funeral services for Jessie Dundy, 81, were held at 12 noon on Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dundy died Wednesday in Carolina Health Nursing Home in Columbia after an illness. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Collins and Lottie Samuel. She was educated in the Darlington County public school system. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, Hercules (Dollie) Dundy of Hartsville; one daughter, Mable Scarborough of Irmo; one sister, Vivian Evans of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, J. W. (Lessie) Samuel of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

CARL W. KRAUS

OCEAN VIEW, Del. — Funeral services for Carl W. Kraus, 77, were held at 12 noon Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Miller Memorial Presbyterian Church in Monmouth Junction, N.J. Burial was held in Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick, N.J., directed by M. J. Murphy Funeral Home of Monmouth Junction, N.J. Local announcements are being handled by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Kraus, husband of Virginia Kraus, died Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Beebe Medical Center in Ocean View, Del. He resided in South Brunswick, N.J. He retired after 40 years of service as a diesel and auto mechanic man with Suburban Transit, New Brunswick, N.J. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of Franklin Park Elks.

He is survived by his wife of Ocean View, Del.; seven children, Virginia and Robert Madsen of South Brunswick, N.J., Linda and Richie Venuto of North Brunswick, N.J., Diane and Richard Olsen of Griggstown, N.J., Harold and Sheila Schmidt of Ocean View, Del., Kenny Schmidt of Princeton, N.J., Carl E. and Betsy Kraus of Hartsville and Salvatore Fidacaro of Kendall Park, N.J.; a brother, Jerry Kraus; a sister, Sylvia Fedelchak; 16 grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren.

JEANNE F. CLARKE

DARLINGTON — A memorial service for Jeanne Carolina Friddell Clarke, 77, was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Todd Parrish and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clarke died Friday, Feb. 13, in a local hospital. She was born in Camden, N.J., daughter of the late William and Mildred Smith Friddell. She was the widow of Howard Wesley Clarke.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty (Gus) Battista of Darlington; two sons, Corey (Michelle) Clarke of Nokomas, Fla., and James (Carol) Clarke of Sarasota, Fla.; nine grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren; a sister, Alda Bobjak of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

JESSIE DUNDY

LYDIA — Jessie Dundy, 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, in a Columbia Nursing Home after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Hercules Lee Dundy, 5713 Indian Branch Road, Lydia.

IRENE G. MARLOW

Graveside services for Irene G. Marlow, 71, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in McBee cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Marlow, widow of Walter A. Marlow, died Friday, Feb. 13. She was born in Wilkes County, N.C., a daughter of the late William Commie Gregory and Bertha Clyde Bunton Lowder.

Surviving are four daughters, Debbie Thompson of Hartsville, Linda Zorn of Irmo, Kathy Marlow of Sumter and Vicky Harvey of Columbia; two sisters, Ovell Versch of McBee and Billie Ann Shook of Stony Point, N.C.; five grandchildren and one great–grandchild.

Mrs. Marlow was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Margaret Marlow.

SHERRY D. POWELL

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Sherry Dowling Powell, 44, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 18, 2004, at Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church, officiated by the Revs. John Stephenson and Dan Thigpen. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Powell died Sunday, Feb. 15, in a local hospital after a short but brave battle with cancer. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of Dan and Mattie Stewart Dowling. She graduated from St. John's High School in 1977 and attended Betty Stevens School of Cosmetology in 1993. She was owner and operator of the Nail Parlor in Darlington where she pampered a host of close friends and clients. Mrs. Powell was a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents of Darlington are a husband, Michael Powell of Darlington; a son, Kristopher Chase Menasco of the home; two step–daughters, Michelle (Jason) Pate of Florence, and Ashley Powell of Florence; one sister, Angela (Stan) Bailey; one brother, Earle (Dena) Dowling, all of Darlington; four nieces and two nephews; two very special cousins, Rene (Pat) Wells of Darlington and Wanda (Ken) Amick of Columbia; and a special friend, Tammy (Gillie) Revell of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church, 1665 Philadelphia St., Darlington, SC 29532.

MARION J. EDWARDS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Marion Joseph Edwards Jr., 46, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 18, 2004, at Flat Creek Baptist Church with Elder Wesley Belin officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Edwards died Friday, Feb. 13, in a Florence hospital after an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Marion and Rosetta Pugh Edwards Sr. He was a graduate of St. John's High School class of 1975 and continued his education at Florence–Darlington Technical College. He was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. He was employed at Galey and Lord, Inc. in Society Hill and later at American Can, a division of Dixie Cup now called Georgia Pacific, for 23 years and also played softball with the Dixie Group. He was a member of the S.C. National Guard.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Robin Slater Edwards of the home; four children, Alicia Edwards, Kevin Edwards, both of the home, Dion (Mercedes) Edwards of Hampton, Va. and Quincy Edwards of Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter, Amarys Edwards of Hampton, Va.; five sisters, Patricia M. Edwards, Rosa L. Edwards, Eliza (Lorenzo) McClain, Emma (Ronnie) Kinley, all of Darlington, and Teresa Moore of Bronx, N.Y.; three aunts, Pastor Annie Lou (Willie James) Williamson, Ms. Alma Edwards, both of Darlington, and Mrs. Hattie Mae Edwards of Connecticut; four uncles, James Edwards, Nathaniel James, both of Darlington, Robert (Ann) Edwards of New Haven, Conn., and Andrew James of Baltimore, Md.; a special aunt, Mrs. Eliza Moore of Bronx, N.Y.; his mother–in–law, Ms. Ruby Lee Slater of Darlington; a step–mother, Ms. Bertha Edwards of Florence; a special cousin, Ms. Inez McFarland of Bronx, N.Y.; in–laws; nieces; nephews and cousins.

Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a brother–in–law, Andra Slater.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1211 Mechanicsville Hwy., Pineville Community, Darlington.

EMILY STEEN

Graveside services for Emily Louise Gardner Steen, 88, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 18, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, Raleigh, N.C.

Mrs. Steen, widow of James Lesly Steen, died Sunday, Feb. 15. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Edward and Elizabeth Peden Gardner. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and Sophie Nichols Circle in Hartsville.

Surviving are her sons, Charles Thomas Steen and James Lesly Steen Jr., both of Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edwin Peden Gardner and John Pickens Gardner, and her sister, Carolyn Gardner Walker.

DAISY L. HARRISON

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Daisy Lucille Harrison, 57, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Greater Bethesda Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Ms. Harrison, died Sunday, Feb. 8, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Society Hill, a daughter of the late Eugene and Lucille Bounds Harrison. She was a graduate of Lang High School in Cheraw. She received the bachelor of arts degree in social studies from Barber Santia College, and also furthered her studies at Francis Marion College, the University of South Carolina and the University of Wisconsin. She also was a U.S. history instructor at Chesterfield High School for 34 1/2 years. She was a member of Greater Bethesda Baptist Church.

Surviving are one brother, Landon Harrison of Worthington, Ohio; three sisters, Wilhelmenia Bulls of Byrands Road, Md., Geraldine (Edward) Ray of Ontario, Calif., and Bobbie J. Harrison of Society Hill; three aunts, Nellie Russell of Worthington, Ohio, Lillie Jackson of Newark, N.J., and Juanita Wilson of Florence; and a host of other close relatives.
