WILBERT BENJAMIN

BALTIMORE, Md. — Wilbert Benjamin, formerly of Society Hill, died Wednesday, May 12, in a Baltimore hospital after an illness. Local arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

CHRISTOPHER W. HOPKINS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Christopher Wayne Hopkins, 43, will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 19, 2004, at Landmark Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Sawyer and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Darlington Memory Gardens.

Mr. Hopkins died Sunday, May 16. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late W. P. 'Pete' Hopkins and Lillie Mae Kiser Hopkins. He attended Landmark Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his mother, Lillie Mae Hopkins of Darlington; one son, Christopher Wayne Hopkins Jr. of Darlington; two step–sons, Roger Wayne Greene of Fort Lawn and Richard Green of Darlington; one daughter, Christina Weaver of Hartsville; one step–daughter, April Green of Lancaster; three brothers, Donnie (Dale) Hopkins, Paul (Rita) Hopkins and Mike Hopkins, all of Darlington; close friends, Wayne Gainey and Paula Rogers, and five grandchildren.

DR. JERRY HOWLE

RENO, Nev. — A memorial service for Dr. Jerry A. Howle, 58, formerly of Darlington, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, at the First Baptist Church, Darlington, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Dr. Howle died Saturday, May 15, in a plane crash near the Grand Canyon. He was a forensic psychiatrist and had a practice of Reno for almost 30 years. He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a cum laude graduate of Furman University, 1967, and finished St. John's High School in 1963. He was the son of the late Glenn and Cleonita Ward Howle of Darlington.

Dr. Howle's son, Glenn Howle of Clemson, died in the same accident.

Survivors in addition to his son, Graham (Marci) Howle of Greenville, include two grandchildren, Gray and Perrin; two brothers, Kenneth and Philip Howle of Darlington and two sisters, Miriam Grover of Effingham and Sally Ritchie of Newport News, Va.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of one's choice.

The family will receive friends following the service in the courtyard of the church.

HELEN D. BOLAND

NEWBERRY—Services for Helen Rebecca Dominick Boland, 91, widow of Monroe Leslie Boland, were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church, with burial following in Newberry Memorial Gardens, directed by McSwain–Evans Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Summer Memorial Lutheran Church, PO Box 131, Newberry, SC 29108 or to McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.

Mrs. Boland died Thursday, May 13. She was born in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Ira George and Annie Lou Cook Dominick. Mrs. Boland was retired from Kendall Mills, was an active member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Julia B. Harmon Sunday School class and a member of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, who gave her theirWomen of the Year award.

Surviving are a sister, Evelyn Dominick Cromer of Hartsville; a niece, Cheryl Cromer Yengel of Hartsville; a nephew, James (Ann) Homer Dominick of Orangeburg; great–nieces, Leeanne (Phillip) Watkins of Greenwood and Caroline Dominick of Mt. Pleasant; great–nephews, Andy Yengel of Hartsville and Elliot (Elisha) Dominick of Irmo; great–great nieces, Emily Watkins of Hartsville and Hannah Dominick of Irmo; and a great–great nephew, Avery Dominick of Irmo.

She was predeceased by a sister, Reba Dominick Martin; brothers, James Homer Dominick Sr. and J. B. Dominick.

Active pallbearers were Ralph Summers, Ronnie Summers, Richard Cromer, Ed Bartley, Michael Mills, Vernon Hawkins. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Julia B. Harmon Sunday School Class of Summer Memorial Lutheran, the WELCA and the Church Council.

MARY JANE ROBINSON

COLUMBIA — Mrs. Mary Jane Robinson, formally of Lamar, died Thursday, May 13, at Richland Memorial Hospital of Columbia. The family will receive friends at the home of Harry and Avalee Brunson of 629 Prosperity Drive, Lamar. Hines Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

DARLINGTON—Funeral services for Henry Finley Jett Sr., 64, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 19, 2004, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Jett died Sunday, May 15, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Raleigh and Mary Wilds Jett Sr. He was a graduate of Mayo High School class of 1962. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was employed with Nucor Steel of Darlington until he retired. He was owner and operator of Jett's One Stop in Dovesville.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Douglas Jett of the home; his children, Carol (Gradlin) Thompson of Florence, Pauline (Peter) Larkins of Accokee, Md., Samantha (Veldon) Stoddard of Jonesboro, Ga., and Henry F. (Alisha) Jett Jr. of Darlington; three siblings, David (Margie) Jett, Nora J. Robinson and Raleigh (Debra) Jett Jr., all of Darlington, and the Rev. Joan (Edward) Deans of Florence; 10 grandchildren, Zachary, Adrain, Maya, Chelsea, Cameron, McKinnzey, Patrick, Solita, Alfred and Ashley; two aunts, Helen Scott and Lizzie Jett, both of Darlington; nieces and nephews.

JOSHUA R. HOFFMAN

Funeral services for Joshua Richard Hoffman, 41, will be held today, May 19, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Premative Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Hoffman died Monday, May 17. He was born in North Carolina, a son of the late Carl and Marie Manning Hoffman.

Surviving are two daughters: Amanda and Ashley Hoffman of Patrick.

HUBERT TWITTY

Funeral services for Hubert Wilson Twitty, 82, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiating with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mr. Twitty, widow of Virginia Thames Twitty, died Saturday, May 15. Born in Hartsville andwas a son of the late Otis Wilson and Flotilla Robertson Twitty. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as a deacon and usher. He retired from Sonoco Products Company with 44 years of service, was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge, a Big Brother and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He coached Dixie Youth baseball for 25 years, as well as Pony League and American Legion baseball.

Surviving are his sons and daughters–in–law, Wilson and Robin Twitty of Anderson, Randy and Lynn Twitty of Sumter; daughter and son–in–law, Pat and Bill Shelley of Hartsville; grandchildren, Will Shelley, Virginia Lanford, Ryan Twitty, Adam Twitty, Kaitlin Twitty, Rebecca Twitty, Daniel Twitty, Andrew Twitty; great–grandchild, Evan Shelley.

CHRISTINE HOWELL

TIMMONSVILLE — Funeral services for Myrtle Christine Myers Howell, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel. Interment followed in Newman Swamp cemetery.

Mrs. Howell died Sunday, May 16, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late William M.Bill and Lillie Belle Rodgers Grooms Myers. She had retired from Nytronics and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Laura C. Orr Cannupp and GeraldineGerri C. Orr, both of Timmonsville; three half–sisters, Debra M. (Steve) Peavy of Patrick, Becky M. (Junior) Boykin of Hartsville and Anna M. (Charles) Hannah of Chesterfield; and special friends, Malcolm and Mildred Rogers, and Joe Tidwell.

Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by two spouses, Tech. Sgt. Robert Leonard Orr Jr. and Ralph Guy Howell; three sisters, Maybelle M. Sturgis, Alice Myer and Mildred M. Rollings; and two half brothers, Platt Grooms and Earl Lee.

ROBERT M. TERRY

Funeral services for Robert M. Terry, 74, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Hal Norton, David Welch and Robert Shaw will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.

Mr. Terry died Monday, May 17, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Raymond A. and Carolyn McLees Terry. He was a member of Blaine United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet and was a trustee of Garden City Chapel. He served in the U.S. Navy, was employed with the Bank of Hartsville and later became an accountant at Sonoco. He was a Past Master of Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Colclough Terry of Garden City; sons and daughters–in–law, Mark McLees and Wanda Terry of Murrells Inlet, Dewey and Charlene Yarborough of Mt. Pleasant; daughters and sons–in–law, Carol Ann and Doran Frack of Dallastown, Pa., Sandy and Tommy Connors of Putnam Lake, N.Y., Mary Floyd of Timmonsville; eight grandchildren and one great–grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Terry, and his brother, James P. Terry Sr.

LAMAR — Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jane Robinson will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, May 19, 2004, at the Church of Christ of Lamar. Burial will be in the Plaza Memorial Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

JESSIE M. GIBSON

Mrs. Jessie M. Gibson, of 1933 Black Creek Road, Darlington, died on Monday, May 17, 2004 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

WAYNE R. WEBB

GARDEN CITY BEACH — Funeral services for Wayne Richard Webb, 48, formerly of Hartsville, were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. Burial was held at 1 p.m. at Florence National cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Webb died Sunday, May 16, at his residence. Born Jan. 10, 1956, in Greenville, he was the son of Genell Gainey Webb and the late William T. Webb Sr. Mr. Webb was a U.S. Navy veteran and a carpenter.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Garden City Beach are two sons, Carl Webb (Amy) and their two sons of Inman, Richie Webb (April) and their son of Garden City; two brothers, William T. Webb Jr. of Key Largo, Fla., Kenneth L. Webb of Ridgeway; and a sister, Cynthia Geiger of Garden City Beach.

Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 or to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 Frasier St., Georgetown, SC 29440.

J.D. MASON

Funeral services for J.D. Mason, 85, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2004, at Little Zion Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. Mason died Sunday, May 9, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Lyde and Amelia Parker Mason. He was educated in the Lee County public school system. He was a member of Little Zion Missionary Church and a deacon. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Vicy L. Hooks Mason.

Surviving are seven daughters, Ethel (D.W.) Wilson, Argree Cooks, Joseline M. Brailey, Barbara (Sylvester) Hawkins, Dorothy (James) Cooley, Sarah (Calvin) Murray and Sandra (Levester) Reed, all of Hartsville; seven sons, Ciron (Theresa) Mason, Allen (Mary) Mason, Andrew (Betty Brunson, finance) Mason, Ronnie Mason, Julious (Kimberly) Mason, P.K. Mason, all of Hartsville, and Herbert Lee Mason of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Dehila Moore and Batrice Mason, both of Baltimore, Md., and Bernice Dewitt of Hartsville; one daughter–in–law, Lizzie Mason of Hartsville; 145 grandchildren and great–grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

BOBBIE JACKSON

Funeral services for Bobbie Lee Jackson, 69, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 14, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. Jackson died Saturday, May 8. Born in Norfolk, Va., he was a son of the late Alfred and Hazel Howle Jackson. He was a member of the Hartsville Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

WAYNE JOHNSON

Funeral services for Allen Wayne Johnson, 52, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Gene McAlister and Ed Griggs officiating. Burial was in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. Mr. Johnson died Tuesday, May 11. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Edmond Bert and Naomi Odom Johnson. He was a wonderful, loving, giving father and brother. Surviving are his wife, Louise Moore Johnson of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Dewayne and Donna Johnson of Scranton; daughters and son–in–law, Norma Jean and Ronnie Taylor of Florence, Jessica Johnson and Jennifer Johnson, both of Hartsville; sisters and brothers–in–law, Ann and Benny Steen, Beverly and Kenneth Scott, all of Hartsville; brothers and sister–in–law, Ashley Johnson of Darlington, Everette and Kathy Johnson of Patrick.
