MATTIE B. SMITH
TIMMONSVILLE – Funeral services for Mattie Barfield Smith, 69, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 9, 2005, at Kannaday’s Funeral Home in Dillon, with burial in Greenlawn cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, widow of Sandy Camerson Smith, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, at her residence. She was born in Latta on Oct. 24, 1935, a daughter of the late John Earl and Minnie Elizabeth Rowell Barfield. For many years she was a foster parent, and served on the Board of Foster Parents, as well as a homemaker. Mrs. Smith was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Angela Smith (John James) Russ of Florence, Tanya Smith (Anthony) Langston of Timmonsville, Sheila Smith Tyner and Lisa G. Smith, both of Hartsville; a brother, Johnny (LeVerne) Barfield of Latta; grandchildren, Mathew and Olivia Smith, Mark Smith, Christon Russ and Johnathon Russ.

A son, Robin Cameron Smith, and sister, Elizabeth Kirby, predeceased her in death.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, 555, East Cheves St., P. O. Box 100551, Florence, SC 29501.

FRANKLIN H. SUGGS
DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Franklin H. Suggs, 59, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Indian Branch United Methodist Church with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Suggs was born in Darlington County, son of Mary Whittle Suggs and the late Charlie Suggs. He served his country with the United States Army and had retired after 25 years from the City of Florence Fire Department. He was a member of the Florence Bassmasters Club and Indian Branch United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Darlington, are his wife, Toni Lee Suggs of Darlington; two sons, McIver (Kim) Suggs and Chris (Nikki) Suggs, both of Darlington; six grandchildren, Ryan and Mati Rushing, Madison and Trinity Suggs, and Brody and Brittany Kirby; two sisters, Sylvia (Cecil) Chandler and Mollie Johnson, both of Darlington; three brothers, Ronnie (Janice) Suggs of Hartsville; Steve Suggs and Charlie Boykin, both of Darlington; and mother-in-law, Peggy McKenzie.

Mr. Suggs was preceded in death by a sister, LaRue Odom.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. tonight, Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, SC Chapter, P. O. Box 23128, Columbia, SC 29224-3128.

JAMES COOKS JR.
Funeral services for James Cooks Jr. were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

Mr. Cooks, a son of James Cooks Sr. and the late Mary Sumter Cooks was born Dec. 3, 1930, in Darlington County. He was the eldest of seven children. He departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 15, at his home in Hartsville, after a brief illness.

Mr. Cooks received his education in the Darlington County public schools. During his early adult life, he left South Carolina and went to Washington, D.C., with his sweetheart, Florida Mae Benjamin-Cooks, and from this union there were six children. He retired from Sealtest after 35 years in 1989 and returned to Hartsville to enjoy his retirement.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Cooks Lane Mayer.

He leaves behind, in addition to his father, James Cooks Sr. of Bishopville; his wife of 54 years, Florida Mae Cooks of Hartsville; three sons, Zachary (Pat) Cooks of Essex, Md., Ricky Ricardo Cooks and James Michael Cooks, both of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Gwendolyn E. Cooks and Marsha A. (Richard) McRae, both of Hyattsville, Md., and Darlene Cooks of Suitland, Md.; two brothers, Elex Cooks of Jersey City, N.J., and Charles (Lillie Mae) Cooks of Hartsville; four sisters, Bessie (Bobby) Woodham and Jessie (Clifton) Woodham, both of Jersey City, N.J., Jannie (Alex) Holloman of Hartsville and Barbara (James) Durant of Bishopville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three aunts; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.

L. 'BUD' ATKINSON
Funeral services with Masonic Rites for John L. 'Bud' Atkinson, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Ronnie Caulder, Tommy Browne and Ed Griggs officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Atkinson died Friday, Dec. 16. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John Muldrow and Elise Howle Atkinson. He served in the United Stated Army and was wounded in the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Bailey Atkinson of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, John C. 'Nimp' and Chris Atkinson of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Margie Atkinson, Sarah Steen, Macey and Albert Kirven, all of Hartsville, Carolyn Baker of Bishopville, Annelle Ravon of Lugoff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Doris Atkinson, Allen and Doris Atkinson, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Misty Atkinson, Casey Atkinson, Kristy Atkinson; great-grandchildren, Christopher 'Runt' and Alison 'Chip;' several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Janet Atkinson.

VICKIE R. STEEN
Funeral services for Vickie Reaves Steen, 59, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 21, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. James Skipper will officiate the service with a private burial.

Mrs. Steen died Sunday, Dec. 18. Born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Jennings Bryan and Ruby Stanley Reaves.

Surviving are her husband, Albert Junier Steen; son, Charles Kelley Steen, both of Hartsville; sisters, Bernice Pressley of Greenville, Barbara Thurston of Bell Haven, N.C. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Lynn Steen.

GEORGIANNA WOODS
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Georgianna Woods, formerly of Hartsville, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, in Winston Salem after an illness. She was the sister of Perry Davis and Wilkes Davis, both of Hartsville. Local arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

ALBERTA HUNTER
Funeral services for Jacqueline Alberta McDonald Hunter, 74, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jeff Gardner and Mitchell Dampier officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves St. Florence, SC 29501.

Mrs. Hunter died Saturday, Dec. 17. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Oscar McDonald and Ola Wallace McDonald Suiter. She retired from Hartsville Florist.

Surviving are her son, Guy McDonald of Hartsville; daughter, Jackie Hunter of Darlington; granddaughter, Brittany Gainey; great-grandson, Brantly Williams; nephew, Marshall Gainey; nieces, Ranada Freeman and Livvy Baird. She was preceded in death by her brother, Junior McDonald.

LUNNON McCUTCHEN
Funeral services for Lunnon McCutchen were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. N.F. Sellers, pastor of Peace Tabernacle Baptist Church, officiated the service.

Mr. McCutchen was born in Lee County, a son of the late Hallie and Louvenia Toney McCutchen. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, he joined New Zion AME Church in Wisacky.

In 1951, he was married to Rose McCutchen and then moved to Goldsboro, N.C. While there, he joined The Eastern Chapel M.B. Church and remained a faithful member until his health declined. He was employed with the state of North Carolina and retired in 1982. In 1995, he moved to Florence with his sister, Rosa Cave.

Lunnon was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa McCuthen; four sisters, Lillie G. Haskel, Melissa M. Wilson, Carrie M. Shaw and Minnie M. Owens; three brothers, Harry McCutchen, Willie McCutchen and Levi McCutchen.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory of Lunnon McCutchen are two sisters, Jessie Jacobs of Springfield Garden, N.Y., and Rosa (Nehemiah) Cave of Barnwell; two foster children, Mary Robinson and Isaiah Parrott both of Goldsboro, N.C.; one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and very dear friends.

CAROLYN J. NORTON
Funeral services for Carolyn Johnson Norton, 79, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Milton Frazier officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Norton, widow of Robert L. Norton, died Friday, Dec. 16. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late William Carmie and Minara Braddock Johnson. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Women of the Moose and Woodmen of the World. Surviving are her daughter, Bobi C. Norton of North Myrtle Beach; daughter-in-law, Sandy Mayfield Norton of Hartsville; grandchildren, Carol Norton Beard, Richard R. Norton Jr., Colt L. Norton; great-grandchildren, Shuler Bentley and Jake Bentley; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard R. Norton Sr.

She was dearly loved by all who knew her. A special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the McLeod Medical Center Darlington.

RUSSELL E. CLARK
Services for Russell Eugene Clark, 56, were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Athens cemetery in Akron, Ind.

Mr. Clark died Thursday, Dec. 15. He was born in Rochester, Ind., a son of the late George and Wilma Robinson Clark. He was retired from Fulton County as a heavy equipment operator and was a Vietnam veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Schreckengost Clark of Hartsville; sons, Jonathan (Ann) Clark of Akron, Ind., Wes Mappin of South Bend, Ind., Russell T. Clark of Hartsville; daughter, Tracey (Brian) Hart of Rochester, Ind.; grandchildren, Justin and Shalee Hart of Rochester, Ind.; brother, Jack Beck of Rochester, Ind.; sisters, Georgia Ann Norman, of Akron, Ind., and Vickie Clark of St. George, Utah. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Clark.

ALLISTER M. SMITH
Funeral services for Allister Maynard Smith were held on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. The burial will follow in the Greenlawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Frederick Yebuah, the pastor of Wesley Chapel and St. John United Methodist Churches, officiated the service.

Mr. Smith was born March 3, 1971, in Hartsville, a son of Margie B. Smith and the late James Smith Jr. He received his early education in the Darlington County public schools. He later attended Jacobs Creek Job Corps in Bristol, Tenn., and graduated with the class of 1989.

Mr. Smith was a trained chef and worked as the chief cook on a Merchant Marine ship. His job allowed him the opportunity to travel extensively and meet lots of people. One of his fondest memories was when he met Boy George, his boyhood idol.

He enjoyed traveling and exploring the world. He loved people and always helped those in need. Allister was a loving and kind person who lived life to the fullest. He will live on in the hearts and minds of those who he touched.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory of Allister Maynard Smith include his mother, Margie B. Smith of Hartsville; three brothers, Tyrone Blakney, Ulander (Ina) Smith and James Smith III, all of Hartsville; four sisters, Euneter Blakney of Florence, Eureka Smith and Jamesetta Green both of Hartsville, and Eugenia Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; a special uncle, Bishop Willie Lee Bacote; 13 nieces and nephews; 21 great-nieces, other close relatives and very dear friends.

PATRICIA R. CATOE
Memorial services for Patricia Rivers Catoe, 55, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at Middendorf Baptist Church with the Revs. Ed Griggs and Don Rhyne officiating.

Patricia who died Tuesday, Dec. 13, was born in Marlboro County. She was a daughter of Dorothy Rivers and the late David Rivers. She resided in Chesterfield and Darlington counties until relocating to Rupert, Idaho.

Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Gail Catoe-Brooks and Kenneth Brooks, Jill Catoe; three grandchildren, Jarrett, Joshua and Jacob Brooks; sister Marsha Rivers; and brother Gregory Rivers, all of Hartsville; husband James Pollock of Rupert, Idaho. She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Jo Lynn Catoe.

LeROY T. HUCKS JR.
Services for LeRoy Thomas Hucks Jr. age 53, who died Dec. 12, 2005, were held Wed., Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David C. Surrett officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hucks was born in Hartsville a son of Dena Epps Hucks and the late LeRoy Thomas Hucks Sr. He was city planner for the city of Florence, was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and was an avid NASCAR enthusiast and loved spectator sports. He was a graduate of Francis Marion University.

Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; brother, Daniel Hucks of Lexington; and sister, Sheron Babb of Colleyville, Texas.

Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, PO Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551 or Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave. Hartsville, SC 29550.

BAYNARD R. WHALEY
Funeral services for Baynard Reed Whaley, 93, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 16, 2005, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Father Michael Ridgill will officiate with a private burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Whaley, widower of Helen Akers Whaley, May Morrison Whaley, and Betty Newell Whaley, died Wednesday, Dec. 14. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Marcellus Seabrook and Edna Reed Whaley. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. He was also very active in the Kairos Prison Ministry.

He graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina with a B. S. in chemical engineering, first worked at Firestone as a research chemist, was retired from Sonoco Products Company as a research chemist, and was a past president of the American Chemical Society. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Hartsville Rotary Club and established several student scholarships at Coker College.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Reed Whaley of Hartsville, Roger and Allison Whaley of Columbia, Charles and Kay Whaley of Myrtle Beach; sister, Dorothy W. Knight of Sumter; grandchildren and spouse, John Akers and Morgan Whaley, Katherine Beattie Whaley, Mikell Baynard Whaley, Leslie Reed Whaley. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Atherton Whaley and Marion Whaley; and sister, Alys Whaley.
