Man found in pond drowned
Drowning was the cause of death of a Greenville man whose body was pulled from a hunt club pond Sunday. Family members of Ulyss Able Gilliam, 77, of 19 Strawberry Drive had thought he might have had a health problem before he fell from his boat into a pond at Cane Creek Hunt Camp off the Billy Road in Carlisle Saturday.
Union County Coroner William Holcombe said an autopsy conducted on Gilliam's body Monday confirmed he drowned. Divers began searching for Gilliam Saturday evening after his boat was found drifting in the pond and his hat was in the water. His body was located Sunday evening. Family members had described Gilliam as an avid outdoorsman and good swimmer who was still strong despite his age.
Gilliam had apparently been setting cooter traps and fishing before he fell in the water. "We may never know what happened," Holcombe said. "He might have been standing up in the boat and became overbalanced." Gilliam was not wearing a life jacket and there was no lifejacket in his boat.
