MIRIAM E. STEPHENSON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services Miriam E. Stephenson were held on Thursday, December 2, 2004, at 2 p. m. at Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church with burial in the Philadelphia cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stephenson was born in Bowman to the late Samuel Hugo and Frances Bull Weathers. She was the wife of the Rev. Robert M. Stephenson Jr., who died in 1993.

Mrs. Stephenson was a graduate of Bob Jones University with a Bachelor of Arts degree; the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing; and from Francis Marion University with a Master of Education degree. She was a staff nurse at the Medical University in Charleston for several years after graduation. Mrs. Stephenson also served as a Southern Methodist medical missionary in Nigeria, West Africa, with the Sudan Interior Mission for nine years. She then worked in several hospitals in Georgia and South Carolina. She was a nursing instructor in the Associate Degree Nursing Program and Level Coordinator at Florence–Darlington Technical College. Later she was the director of counseling/testing until her retirement in 1994. Mrs. Stephenson enjoyed volunteer work at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville. She took numerous short–term missions trips to countries including the Ukraine, China, Ecuador and Venezuela. She served as president of the Woman's Missionary Council of the Southern Methodist Denomination and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Methodist College in Orangeburg. She was also a faithful member of the First Southern Methodist Church in Greenville.

She devoted her life to serving her Savior, Jesus Christ, and was loved and respected by all who knew her.

Mrs. Stephenson was preceded in death by her husband and a son, David Samuel Stephenson.

Survivors include a son, John (Pat) Stephenson of Darlington; two daughters, Vicky (Tom) Biers of Quinlan, Texas, and Bobbye Sue (Ellison) Evans of Turbeville; three brothers, Don (Pat) Weathers of Lexington, Dr. William T. (Nancy) Weathers and John W. (Dolores) Weathers, both of Greenville; a sister, Sara (J.T.) Burton of Leesville; six grandchildren and two great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Boy's Farm Inc., PO Box 713, Newberry, S. C, 29108.

RAVENEL BYRD

Albert Ravenel Byrd, 89, of Hartsville, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004.

He was born in Darlington County May 29, 1915, a son of the late John Dewey Byrd and Mattie Howle Byrd. He was employed by the Hartsville Print and Dye Works and the Kendell Co. in Bethune. He was also employed as an assistant mail carrier. Following retirement, he worked part time for Byerly Hospital in security until 1993.

He was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and secretary/treasurer. He was a member of the United Methodist Men, the men's Sunday school class and the XYZ (Extra Years of Zest) club. He was a Mason, a member of Gideon's International and the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille Griggs Byrd; three children, Judith Talbert of Hartsville, Wayne Wilkes Byrd and wife, Jeanne, of Columbia, and Eric Ravenel Byrd and wife, Lynne, of Sumter; six grandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren; sister, Sarah Mildred Byrd; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Larry Martin Byrd.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with burial at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550.

RAQUEL ARTHUR

Funeral services for Raquel Arthur, 32, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at St. John United Methodist Church in Oates. Burial was in the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Lee County, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.

Miss Arthur died on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County to Richard and Lillian Lucas Arthur and was a graduate of Hartsville High School, class of 1990. She continued her education at Francis Marion University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the field of biology with the class of 1995. Raquel was raised in a Christian home and was a member of the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her parents, Richard and Lillian (Lucas) Arthur of Hartsville; one brother, Johnny Arthur of Columbus, Ohio; niece Alexandria Raquel Arthur and two nephews, Germond D. and Byson J. Arthur; her paternal grandparents, Hazel and Luanna Arthur of Lydia; twelve uncles, Luke (Janie) Arthur, Charles Arthur, Darrel (Rose) Bell, Russel (Kathleen) Lucas, all of Hartsville, Kirk Arthur, Harold Lucas, Larry Lucas and Edgar Lucas, Hazel (Viola) Arthur Jr., Clinton (Loretta) Arthur, all of Lydia, Willie (Barbara) Lucas and Johnny (Bernice) Lucas of Meriden, Conn.; four aunts Carlyn (Emanuel) Frierson, Clory Williams, both of Lydia, Elizabeth (Odell) Durant of Sumter and Annie (Randell) Carroway of Wilmington, N.C.

WILLIE JEFFERY

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Willie Skirt Jeffery will be held at 3 p.m. today, Dec. 3, 2004, in St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.

Mr. Jeffery died Monday, Nov. 29, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jerome and Sarah Marcus Jeffery. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. He was employed at James Rivers Dixie Cup of Darlington until he retired.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Agnes Jackson Jeffery of the home; six children, Gwendolyn Jeffrey Damon and Audry Ann Ham, both of Darlington, Willie (Claudia Shannon) Jeffery Jr. and Genevive Jeffery, both of Atlanta, Ga., Richard (Tiny Burdette) Jeffery of Fayetteville, N.C., and Barrey (Rita) Horn of Virginia; three brothers, Louis (Helen) Jeffery of Darlington, and Roosevelt (Linda) Jeffery and Robert Bonnie Jeffery, both of Florida; three sisters, Ms. Bessie Louise Boseman of Darlington, Ms. Sarah Jeffery of Timmonsville and Ruby Cotton of New York; six grandchildren; a sister–in–law, Ms. Mamie Jeffery; nieces and nephews.

Two brothers preceded him in death, T. J. Jeffery and Gettis Darvia Jeffery, and a sister–in–law, Mary E. Jeffery.

ANTHONY POMPEY

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Anthony Chris Pompey, 42, of Darlington, will be held at 11 a.m. this morning, Dec. 3, 2004, in Center Baptist Church with the Revs. Jackie Boyd, pastor, and Jerry Murray, officiating. Burial will follow in Hart #2 cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.

Mr. Pompey died Monday, Nov. 29, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Dorothy Johnson. He was a graduate of Mayo High School Class of 1981 and was employed with Francis Marion University for 22 years in the maintenance department. He occasionally attended Center Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy J. Thomas of Darlington; his daughter, Chrystal Pompey of Darlington; his former wife, Thomasena Hickman; eight siblings, Alphonso Johnson of Towson, Md., Tina McCoy of Waldorf, Md., Supreme Johnson, Doris Wallace, Rev. Jerry Murray, all of Paterson, N.J., and Deloris (Karl) Barcus, Michael Thomas and Larry McCoy, all of Darlington; his grandmother, Mrs. Addie Robinson of Darlington; uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews; a devoted friend, Helen Hickman.

LORENE WARREN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lorene Warren, 69, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in Dovesville Church Of God with interment following in the church cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Richard Wilt and the Rev Rodger Martin, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Warren died Tuesday morning, Nov. 30, in a local hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Elijah and Maybelle Gainey Warren. He was retired from Sonoco and was a member of Dovesville Church of God. Mr. Warren enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and in his yard.

Surviving are his wife, Miriam White Warren of Dovesville; a son, Tony Warren of Florence; a daughter, Gena (William James) Howle of Dovesville; four granddaughters, Candice Lee, Brenda Rae, Amy Bridget and Jaime Paige Howle; a sister, Geraldine Barefoot of Hartsville, and many nieces and nephews .

Mr. Warren was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.

JAMES MACK

LAMAR — James W. Sonny Mack Jr. died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. Family will receive friends at the residence.

IRWIN MOORE

Funeral services for Irwin Jackson Ikey Moore, 97, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550; Carolina Fire Fighters Assoc., Box 67, Simpsonville, SC 29681; Omar Temple Crippled Children's Fund, Box 21028, Charleston, SC 29413; or Kairos of South Carolina, Box 2706, Sumter, SC 29151.

Mr. Moore, widower of Alyce Shaw Moore, died Wednesday, Dec. 1. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Hugh A. and Laura Jackson Moore. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday school class. He was past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter # 91, a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge # 173 and a member of the Darlington County Red Fez Club. He enjoyed fund raising for the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital. He was a past SC Fireman of the Year, was inducted into the SC Fire Fighters Hall of Fame in 1976 and was retired as Volunteer Fire Chief Hartsville with over 60 years of service. He served with the SC Kairos Prison Ministry since 1988 and was retired owner and operator of Moore's Refrigeration with over 50 years of service.

Surviving are his brother, Howard E. Moore of Hartsville; grandchildren, Rebecca Rogers Taft and husband Robert of Hartsville, Beth Rogers Maust and husband Keith of Weddington, N.C., Sarah McElveen Alexander and husband Marion of Rincon, Ga., Lynn McElveen McDowell and husband Bill of Baton Rouge, La.; great–grandsons, Garrett and Ryan Maust, Westley Alexander, Samuel and Jackson McDowell. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Katherine Kitty Moore McElveen.

SHELTON E. WILLIAMS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Shelton E. Williams, 82, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 3, 2004, in Belk Funeral Home Chapel, with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens, officiated by Rev. Norman Mitchell.

Mr. Williams died Wednesday, Dec. 1, at his residence. He was born in Chesterfield, son of the late Charles F. and Dosia Marie Hancock Williams. He served his country in the US Army and fought in World War II from 1940 — 1945, and was retired from Dixie Cup as a supervisor. He was a member of First Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Harrington Williams, of the home; two sons, Edward L. Williams and Ronald Ronnie C. Williams, both of Darlington; a step–son, Derrick Randy Watford of Darlington; a step–daughter, Annette Benoist of Rockingham; six grandchildren and four great–grandchildren; and a sister, Leila Yarborough of Darlington.

Mr. Warren was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Leroy Williams, and a sister, Helen Derrick.

THEODORE HOPKINS

Funeral services for Theodore Lee Punk Hopkins, 61, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Revs. Darrell Bogatay, Wallace Strickland, Don Childers, and Billy Campbell will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, from 5–7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hopkins died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late David Brock and Eadie Belle Hall Hopkins. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and was a member of PALS.

Surviving are his sisters and spouse, Sandra Faye Hopkins of Hartsville, and Sharon and Terry Matheny of Florence; brothers and spouses, Brockie Hopkins Jr. of Hartsville, SC, LaHarve "Bud" Hopkins, H.R. "Pete" and Carolyn Hopkins all of Hartsville, and William E. and Sarah Hopkins of Union. He was preceded in death by his brother, David Brantley Red Hopkins, and his sister, Ida Mae Hopkins.

JIM WALKER

Memorial services for James Jim Richard Walker, 30, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Robert Cline will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Saturday following the service. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550, or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Mr. Walker died Wednesday, Dec. 1. Born in Houston, Texas, he was a son of Rebecca Wadsworth Walker and the late James Malcolm Walker. He was a student at Winthrop University and was a friend to all.

Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Katherine and Patrick Brooks of Hillsborough, N.C.; maternal grandfather, Richard Wadsworth of Hartsville; paternal grandparents, James and Gladys Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; aunts and uncle, Patricia and George McCoy of McBee, Donna Wadsworth of Hartsville; cousins, Christopher and Kimberly McCoy.

RONALD OATES SR.

OATES — Funeral services for Ronald Bentley Ronny Oates Sr., 74, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Mount Elon Baptist Church. The Revs. Marvin Lynch, Robbin King and Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 4, from 5–7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Elon Baptist Church cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 38, Lydia, SC 29079, or Habitat for Humanity, 120 E. Washington St., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Oates died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Francis Marion and Evelyn Bentley Oates. He was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and choir member. He attended Hartsville High School and was a graduate of The Citadel. He served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. A retiree of DuPont in Florence, he was also a farmer in the Oates Community. He was a board member of the Pee Dee Electric Trust, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, a Master Gardener and an avid fisherman and collector.

Surviving are his wife, Lynn Williams Oates of Oates; two sons, Ronald Bentley Oates Jr. of Darlington and Daniel Alan Oates of Simpsonville; a daughter, Kathryn Oates Allison of Clemson; a brother, Francis Marion Oates Jr. of Hartsville; grandchildren, Morgan Oates Harrison, Allison Oates Jordan, Ronald Bentley Oates III, Austin Thomas Oates, Lucas Marion Oates, Katelyn Jean Oates, Hannah Oates Allison and Matthew Oates Allison. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Bell Oates.

JAMES R. CATOE JR.

Funeral services for James Rudolph Jamie Catoe Jr., 38, who died Nov. 23, 2004, were held on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Brian Enlow and Grover Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Jamie was born in Florence County, a son of James Rudolph Catoe Sr. and Alice Walters Catoe. He was employed with Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of the Last Cast Bass Club.

Surviving are his wife, Jada Ogburn Catoe of Hartsville; his parents of Hartsville; two sons, Ryan Catoe and James Rudolph Trace Catoe III, both of Hartsville; two daughters, Mikayla and Kennedy Catoe of Hartsville; one sister, Kelly Sick of Harrisburg, Pa.; brother, Mike Catoe of Hartsville.
