FRED WOOD

WATKINSVILLE, Ga. — Funeral services for William Fred Wood, 62, were held 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Lord and Stephens Chapel with the Rev. Terry Meeks officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Memorial Park with full military honors, directed by Lord & Stephens Funeral Home.

Mr. Wood died Tuesday, Jan. 25. Born in Nashville, Ark., he was the son of Cleo Wright of Highden, Ark., and the late Cecil Calbert Wood. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served from 1960–1977. Following his retirement, he was employed with the Department of Agriculture, U.S. Weather Bureau, from 1979–1988.

Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Jane Wood; children, Rusty (Terry) Wood of Hartsville, Brian (Christine) Wood of Athens, Ga., and Cheryl (Steve) Fellows of Hartwell, Ga.; a sister, Patsy Corpier of Higden, Ark.; and six grandchildren, Emily Wood, Abby Wood, Sarah Wood, Hayden Wood, Matthew Wood and Taylor Fellows.

HENRY B. SMALL

HEATH SPRINGS — Funeral services for Henry Black Small, 80, were held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Rich Hill Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Cauthen Funeral Home of Lancaster.

Mr. Small passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Spring Memorial Hospital. He was born March 8, 1924, in the Rich Hill Community of Lancaster County, a son of the late Roy Otis Small and Orie Lea Black Small. A retired farmer and owner/operator of R. O. Small & Sons, he was a member of Rich Hill Baptist Church, where he was formerly a deacon, superintendent of the Sunday school and training union director. Mr. Small was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and served on the aircraft carrier USS Guadalcanal. A Mason, he had been a member of the Fork Hill Lodge No. 316, where he was a past master. He had served his community on the Federal Land Bank and on the Production Credit Association. Always supportive of our youth, he had been a 4–H leader and a Boy Scout master.

Mr. Small is survived by his wife, Mabel Ellis Brand Small; two sons, Keith Roy (Sheila) Small of Rock Hill and Lee Olin Small of Lancaster; three daughters, Rachel DeLeslie Small (Chuck) Montgomery of Kingstree, MaeBeth Small (Kenzie) Hinson of Bakersfield, N.C., and Dorothy Lou Small (Phil) Purpura of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, James Ford Small of Heath Springs; three sisters, Jerrie Small Chewning of Florence, Martha Small Kirk of Easley and Elisie Small McGill of Union; nine grandchildren, Martha Ann Small (Shawn) Truesdale, Chad Henry Byrd, Elizabeth Marie Small (Michael) Lundy, Andrew Joseph (Andrea) Small, Amber Lee Small, Leah DeLeslie Montgomery, Kayla Ross Small, Shawn Hill and Kasey Hill; and four great–grandchildren, David Cole Truesdale, Jared Michael Truesdale, Taylor Ann Lundy and Charley Elizabeth Lundy.

FLILA WINGATE–AGEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Minister Lila Mae Wingate–Agee, formerly of Darlington County, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in a Washington, D.C., hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Minister Cynthia Hickman, of 333 Marlboro Ave., Hartsville.

LEVESTER WASHINGTON

LANDOVER, Md. — Levester Washington, formerly of Hartsville, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in Landover, Md., after an illness. Local arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

He was the son of Ellen and the late James Washington, brother of Curtis Washington, Henry Washington and Little Bite Washington, all of Hartsville.

ED THORNTON

Funeral services for Edgar Eugene Thornton Jr., 71, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Wayside Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Campbell and William Taylor officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery directed, by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Thornton died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005. Born in Magnolia, Miss., he was a son of the late Edgar Eugene and Rosa Spencer Thornton. He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church. He served in the U. S. Air Force, played the steel guitar with the Country Stallions and was a member of the Moose Lodge. He previously worked for Dan River Mills in Virginia and retired from the Hartsville Police Department as a detective.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Hawkins Thornton of Hartsville; brother, Jerry Lee Thornton of Baton Rouge, La.; uncles and aunts, Robert and Frankie Spencer, Jimmy and Linda Spencer, H. P. Dykes, all of Magnolia, Miss.

SHERRY PLUMMER

Memorial services for Sherry Rossey Plummer, 46, were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Martin officiating.

Mrs. Plummer died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. Born in Clarion, Pa., she was a daughter of Ester Quigley Rossey and the late Pete Rossey.

Surviving are her husband, David Plummer of Hartsville; son, Andrew David Plummer of Darlington; daughter, Niki Dawn Plummer of Peoria, Ill.; mother of Knox, Pa.; sisters, Tracy Rossey and Kristy Murdock, both of Indianapolis, Ind.

RANDALL McCASKILL

McBEE — Memorial services for Randall McCaskill, 48, who died Jan. 27, 2005, were held Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Union United Methodist Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Roger Dodds officiated.

Randall was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jack and Lois Bigley McCaskill. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church and retired from A.O. Smith.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene Whiteman McCaskill of McBee; sons, David McCaskill of McBee, Mark Flowers of Hartsville and Troy and Bobby Ashley of Ohio; daughter, Shanda Howle of Hartsville; sisters, Joyce Horne and Lin Grant of Hartsville; brothers, Stephen McCaskill of North Carolina, Jackson McCaskill of Florence; five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Timothy McCaskill and a sister, Jean King.

SARAH V. ROSCOE

Graveside services for Sarah Virginia Roscoe, 85, who died Jan. 30, 2005, were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw, directed by Norton Funeral Home. The Revs. Tommy Browne and James E. Beck Jr. officiated. Sarah was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late John Walter and Sarah Henderson Roscoe. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are a daughter and son–in–law, Brenda and Sheriff Glenn Campbell of Hartsville; sister, Mary Lee Josey, Bishopville; brother, Jarvis Roscoe of Patrick; granddaughter, Glenda Campbell of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Roscoe, Annie Laura Tyner, Nell Clanton and Maybelle Rodgers, and by her brothers, J.W. Roscoe, Henderson Roscoe, Dan Roscoe and Keith Roscoe.

Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 949 N. Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

RHETTA C. QUATTLEBAUM

HARLEYVILLE — Funeral services for Mrs. Rhetta C. Quattlebaum, 81, will be held 11 a.m. today, Feb. 2, 2005, in the First Baptist Church of Harleyville with Rev. Terry Hiers officiating. Burial will follow in the Harleyville cemetery.

Mrs. Quattlebaum, widow of Fulton Grady Quattlebaum, died Sunday, Jan. 30, in St. George Health Care Center after an extended illness. She was born May 20, 1923, in Plantersville, a daughter of Isaac Benjamin Cooper and Mary Elizabeth Cooper. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Harleyville.

Surviving are two sons, Grady Cooper Quattlebaum and his wife Elaine of Hartsville and David Wayne Quattlebaum and his wife Claudia of Bowman; two daughters, Diane Q. Williams and her husband Ricky of Harleyville and Janet Q. McDougald of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Julia C. Cooke of Aynor; seven grandchildren and six great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Harleyville, 211 W. Main St., Harleyville, SC 29448, or to a charity of one's choice.

Pallbearers are Dennis Quattlebaum, Wayne Quattlebaum, John Quattlebaum, Ernest Quattlebaum, B. W. Parker and L. B. Taylor.

GWENNIE O. BUCKLES

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Gwennie Oliver Buckles, 86, were held 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Hopewell Baptist Church in Chesterfield with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Buckles died Friday, Jan. 28, at her home. She was born in Chesterfield County, daughter of the late Richard LeVander and Dollie Lucas Tucker Oliver. She was married to the late James Wesley Buckles Jr. Mrs. Buckles had been employed for 12 years at Safie Cotton Mill in Rockingham, enjoyed gardening and was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Bobbie Sellers (Morris) Miller of Darlington; granddaughter, Sabrina (Herbert) Capell of Florence; grandson, Charles Edward Eddie (Debra) Sellers of Hartsville; great–grandson, Herbert Bert Capell III of Florence; great–granddaughter, Holly Marie Sellers of Hartsville; a sister, Katie Lee Burr, and brother, Knowlton Oliver, both of Chesterfield; nieces and nephews; special friends, Belva Hutchinson, Marion Coleman, Gee Gee Buck, Ginny Howle and Betty Gainey.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Cora Joplin, Nezzie Tucker, Sarah Brock and brothers, Perry, Archie and David Oliver.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

ELLA L. JOHNSON

Funeral services for Ella Lee Johnson, 62, will be held 3 p.m. today, Feb. 2, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Garden directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson died Friday, Jan. 28, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Buddy and Dorothy Mae Coe Johnson. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County.

Surviving are her husband, Henry Lee Johnson of Hartsville; five children, Jerry Johnson, Michael Johnson, Jennis Johnson and Debra Johnson, all of Hartsville, and Jerome Johnson of North Carolina; a sister, Annie Bell Johnson of Wilson, N.C.; five grandchildren and three great–grandchildren; and daughters–in–law and sisters–in–law.

JAMES SMITH

Funeral services for James Smith, 82, were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in New Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery, directed, by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. James died Tuesday, Jan. 25, in McCoy Nursing Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Kemp Jones and Viola Byrd Smith. He was educated in the Darlington County public school system.

Surviving are one son, Johnny Smith of Waterbury, Conn.; five step–children, Tonya Beal, Caprice Beal, Devon Beal and Debra Ann Beal, all of Ansonia, Conn.; seven sisters, Laura (Fred) McMichael and Mary Z. Laney, both of Ansonia, Conn., Frances Toney of Hartsville, Viola Byrd of Patterson, N.J., Lizzie Delaine, Helen Byrd and Rosena Robinson, all of Society Hill; four brothers, Peter (Lillian) Smith and Charlie Byrd, both of Darlington, Lucas (Gail) Byrd of Ansonia, Conn., and Cutie Jones of Waterbury, Conn.; three grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; one great–great grandchild; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

BERNETHA RUFFIN

Funeral services for Bernetha Ruffin were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth L. Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery in Society Hill.

Ms.Ruffin was born Jan. 11, 1936, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Henry and Anna Johnson Ruffin. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1954.

Shortly after graduating from high school, she was married to James Patterson Sr. This union was blessed with three children. Because her husband was serving in the military, she and her family frequently moved from place to place throughout the United States.

At a young age, Ms. Ruffin attended Bethesda Baptist Church in Society Hill and various other churches while she and her family traveled. Ms. Ruffin worked as a homemaker and as a self employed seamstress and was skilled and dedicated to her craft. She was often complimented on her fashionable attire and had aspirations of becoming a model.

Bernetha was a loving and caring person who was popular, friendly and who loved to sing. Her outgoing personality allowed her to meet no strangers. Her memory will linger on in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her.

Surviving to cherish the legacy of Bernetha Ruffin include two sons, James (Nell) Petterson Jr. of Marietta, Ga., and Edmund (Jacquelyn) Patterson of Laurel, Md.; one daughter, Valerie Patterson of Hyattsville, Md.; one brother, Edward Ruffin of Hartsville; one sister, Thelma Hines of Hartsville; two grandsons, Kennedy Miller Patterson and Gordon Wesley Patterson, both of Marietta, Ga., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
