SIMMONS, Fred
FLORENCE- Dr. Fred N. Simmons died on Thursday, June 27, 2002 after an illness. He was born Nov. 4, 1941 to George and Leila Simmons, both deceased, in McComb, MS, where he spent his childhood. Dr. Simmons attended Jackson State College and Meharry Medical College. He spent a at a number of years practicing dentistry in Spartanburg before settling in Florence where he worked for Sexton Dental Clinic.
Dr. Simmons was an active member of many organizations which included Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Meharry Medical School Alumni Board, State Secretary of SC Chapter of Meharry Medical College Alumni association, National Dental Association, American Dental Association, South Carolina Dental Association, Palmetto Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association, Pee Dee District Dental Association, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and a life member of the NAACP. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as president of the Men's Club.
Dr. Simmons leaves his wife, Kathleen Simmons of the home; a brother, George Simmons of Chicago, IL; a daughter, Michelle Simmons of Miami, FL; two sons, Fred Simmons, Jr., of San Francisco, CA, and Harvey Simmons of Nashville, TN; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, June 30th at Trinity Baptist Church. Directed by SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, INC. Burial will be Tuesday in McComb, MS. Omega Service and visitation will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at SMITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Greater Florence Habitat for Humanity, 236 S. Dargan Street, Florence, SC 29506 and Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2513 W. Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501.

JOHNSTON, Catherine
St. George, S.C. - Catherine Deitrick (Miss Kitty) Johnston, 88, of 405 Johnston St., St. George died Thursday, June 27, 2002 in the Spartanburg Regional Hospital. The funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at the St. George United Methodist Church with Rev. Wash Belangia and Rev. Edward Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in the St. George cemetery directed by BRYANT FUNERAL HOME. Pallbearers will be McCrae B. Johnston, Robert J. Merritt, Robert Lowery, John David Johnston, Lt. John B. Johnston, David Jennings, and Howard Cooper Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was born July 17, 1913 in Essex County, VA the daughter of the late Harry Vincent Deitrick and Nancy Rice Deitrick. She was a graduate of William & Mary College in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Johnston was active in various clubs and civic organizations and was a member of St. George United Methodist Church for 66 years. Mrs. Johnston, the widow of Dr. Aquilla Richard Johnston is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, A. Richard Johnston, Jr. and Carol B. Johnston of Columbia, Dr. John B. Johnston and Tracy R. Johnston of Walterboro, Harry L. Johnston and Mary B. Johnston and Kirkland S. Johnston and Lydia B. Johnston all of Spartanburg, a twin brother John G. Deitrick of Tappahannock, VA and ten grandchildren, John Sullivan Johnston, Johns Island, Happy Johnston Jennings, Charleston, Cope Johnston Fralick, Columbia, Richard Rutherford Johnston, England, Mary Kirkland Johnston, Columbia, Catherine Deitrick Johnston, Spartanburg, Catherine Garnett Johnston, Breckenridge, CO, Lt. John Blassingame Johnston, US Army, Ft. Benning, GA, Julia Latane Johnston, New York, NY, Harriet Rowan Johnston, Spartanburg and a great grandson Maddox Sullivan Johnston, Johns Island.

(formerly of Charleston, S.C.), the beloved father of Mr. Willie Lee Davis, Jr., of Jacksonville, Fla., Ms. Regina, Lavida, Geneva and Mr. DeVante Davis, all of Oakland, Calif., the beloved son of Mr. Joe Davis, Sr. Stepmother Mrs. Louise M. Davis of Charleston, S.C., the beloved brother of Mr. Jimmy Davis of Oakland, Calif., Mr. Harry Davis, Mrs. Ruth D. Walker of Dallas, Tex., Mr. Earl Davis of Summerville, S.C., Mrs. Vera D. BOZIK, Sarah
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of June 28, 2002, Sarah Katherine Bozik, wife of Michael H. Bozik, of James Island, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Michael H. Bozick are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter, Monday at 10 o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Bozick was born October 21, 1937 in Greenville, SC, the daughter of Clyde Edwards and Maudie Clements Edwards.
She is survived by her husband of James Island; 2 sons: George E. Newkirk of Beaufort, SC and David Brian Newkirk of James Island, SC; 2 daughters: Teresa Newkirk Owens and Laura Ellen Newkirk, both of James Island, SC; 2 brothers: Edward Hannon of Peoria, Illinois and Larry Snelson of Greenville, SC; 6 grandchildren: Michael Owens, Kimberly Owens, Christopher Newkirk, Kasey Owens, Matthew Lyons and Alise Newkirk; and one nephew, Brian Ray Hannon of Pittsburgh, PA.

PRINGLE, Armond
RIDGEVILLE, S.C. - Master Armond T. Pringle, age 2 years, of 1259 Old Gailliard Rd., Ridgeville, S.C., died June 27, 2002, in the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, Charleston, S.C.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 30, 2002, 2:00 p.m. at the House of God, Ridgeville, S.C. with the General Elder Erving Capers officiating. Burial in Shuler cemetery, Ridgeville, S.C.
Master Armond T. Pringle was born to Shekelia Pringle of Ridgeville, S.C. and Irving Green of Georgetown, S.C. on Jan. 4, 2000 in Berkeley county.
Survivors are his parents, Shekelia Pringle of Ridgeville, S.C. and Irving Green of Georgetown, S.C., maternal grandparents, Cleveland and Joyce Pringle of Ridgeville, S.C., his paternal grandmother, Karen Green of Georgetown, S.C., a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

HANFORD, Anna
SCRANTON - Anna E. Hanford, 83, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Carolina's Hospital System after an illness.
Ms. Hanford was born in Florence County and the wife of the late Robert F. "Bob" Hanford, and a daughter of Marion "Bub" and Ida Jane Cantey Evans. She was a homemaker and a member of Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pamplico, S.C.
Survivors include her two sons, RJ and Legrand Hanford, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one granddaughter, Amanda Hanford of Lories, S.C.; one grandson, Daniel Hanford of Surfside, S.C.; two sisters, Lorraine Stone of Pamplico, S.C. and Vera (Edwin) Bunte of LaVernia, Texas; and four brothers, JaHue Evans of Florence, Marion Evans of Cades, JD Barr of Sumter and Franklin (Nancy) Barr of Quinby, S.C.
Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, with burial in the Cook cemetery.

SHAY, Martha
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of June 28, 2002, Martha Andrews Shay. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services Sunday at two o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Interment, Private.
Mrs. Shay was born February 24, 1918 in Poughkeepsie, New York, the daughter of Edward Clinton Andrews and Asenath May Ogden Andrews. She was a graduate of Wappingers Falls High School and Creedmoor State Hospital School of Nursing. She was a retired Industrial Nurse with International Business Machines and a 50 year member of The First Presbyterian Church, Wappinger Falls, NY.
She is survived by a daughter: Martha Andrews Croft of Charleston, SC; 3 grandchildren: David Charles Handa and Amy Adela Franklin, both of Raleigh, NC, and Laura Elise Mayers of Atlanta, GA; 4 great grandchildren: Nicholas Handa, Jacob Handa, Connor Franklin, Lila Mayers; and several nieces and nephews. 11 brothers and sisters predeceased her.
