Charles Wayne Ramsey
Gaffney native

ROCK HILL Charles (Charlie) Wayne Ramsey, 65, 1102 Apt. 5 Ebinport Road, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Ramsey was born in Gaffney, the son of the late J.C. Ramsey and the late Elizabeth Parker Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey worked for many years in grocery business at Shaw Brothers, Bi-Lo and Fresh Air Galaxy in Union. He was also a volunteer at Piedmont Medical Center and York County Victim's Assistance and was a member of West End Baptist Church.

Mr. Ramsey is survived by his wife, Paula (Terri) Ledford Ramsey; four sons, Steve Ramsey of Courtland, Ohio, and Tim Ramsey, Matt Ramsey and Bryant Ramsey, all of Rock Hill; two daughters, Vanessa Hamilton of Sumter and Beth Gentry of Rock Hill; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at West End Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Lowery.

Interment will be in Grandview Memorial Park on Hollis Lakes Road. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, and other times at the home of his daughter, Beth Gentry, 4642 Laurendale Court, Rock Hill. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 310-B Bennett Center Drive, Greer, S.C. 29650. Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Paul E. Winbush
Former Whitmire employee

WHITMIRE Paul Edward Winbush, 49, husband of Sandra Jean Epps Winbush, of 402 Nelson St., Whitmire, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003. Born in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Ethel Winbush. He was educated in the public schools of Newberry County and was a former employee of the Town of Whitmire.

Surviving in addition to his wife are an uncle, Walter (Velma) Winbush of Maryland; an aunt, Emma Lee (Ernest) Sartor of Washington, D.C.; his mother-in-law, Jessie Epps Smith of Whitmire; several sisters and brothers-inlaw, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at Sims Chapel Baptist Church in Whitmire. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home, 308 Main Street, Whitmire. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Beth Anne McCutcheon
Lockhart native

GREENWOOD Dr. Beth Anne McCutcheon of 118 Oxford Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Self Regional Health Care. Dr. McCutcheon was born in Lockhart on Feb. 12, 1934, a daughter of the late Harry Preston and Mamie Rogers McCutcheon. Dr. McCutcheon was a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in the Historic District of Columbia, Ga.

She graduated from Lockhart High School in 1951 as salutatorian. She received her BA degree from the University of North Carolina, and her PhD with honors from the University of Georgia. She was director and founder of the Infant Development Center at Breneau College in Gainesville, Ga., and also practiced at hospitals in St. Petersburg, Fla. and Columbus, Ga.

Dr. McCutcheon retired to Greenwood in 1997 with the help of her niece, Gemmye Anne McCutcheon, and her sons, Scott, Keith and Kyle and nephews, Ronnie, Chan, and Joey McCutcheon. Surviving are a great nephew, Scott Kwarsick of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gem and Louise McCutcheon of Lockhart and Preston and Nellie McCutcheon of Union; a sister, Joye M. Jones of Gainesville, Ga.; many nieces and nephews, and long time friends, Charles E. White, Richard and Barbara Judice, and goddaughter Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Saturday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel in Union with nephew, Dr. Don L. McCutcheon, officiating. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Chan, Joey Sr. and Joey Jr. McCutcheon, James McCutcheon, Richard Harris and Richard Judice.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Bowers-Rogers Home, P.O. Box 1252, Greenwood, S.C. 29648-0006. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of services.

Trula H. Ham
Sharon native

LOCKHART Trula Horton Ham, 65, of 403 North 2nd St., wife of William Lewis Ham, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at 2:25 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Ham was born in Sharon on Jan. 1, 1938, a daughter of the late Eliphus Bonner Horton and Eva Inman Horton. She was a member of Bullock's Creek Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Ham was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School, a graduate of Spartanburg Technical College and Kings Business College in Charlotte.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons and a daughter-in-law, Randy Lewis Ham of Deltona, Fla., Ricky Eugene Ham and his wife, Veronica Mendoza Ham of Sharon and William Gary Ham of Lockhart; five sisters, Betty Price of Axtell, Texas, Dorothy Horton of Sharon, Linda Belue of Union, Carolyn Bradley of Chester and Eleanor Michaels of Bowling Green; three brothers, E.B. Horton Jr. and Bill Horton, both of Hickory Grove, and Walter Horton of Rock Hill.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today at the Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers. Burial was in Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Alan Horton, Larry Horton, Roger Horton, Donnie Adams, Allen Cabaniss and Clark Canupp. Tommy Eaves and Randy Roberts were the honorary escort. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7 until 9 and was placed in the church at noon to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 403 North 2nd St. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va., 23058-5216. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Herbert E. Millwood
Retired construction worker

Herbert E. (Lefty) Millwood, 62, husband of Darlene Osmet Millwood of 214 Gin Circle, Buffalo, died Wednesday Aug. 27, 2003, at 1:45 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Millwood was born in Buffalo on July 9, 1941, a son of the late William M. and Eva Vaughan Millwood. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was a retired construction worker.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Donna M. Roberts of Buffalo; a son, Gene Millwood of Union; two brothers, James (Monk) Millwood of Buffalo and Bobby Joe Millwood of Union; a stepsister, Thelma M. Martin of Buffalo; two step-sons, Rickey D. Keasler Jr. of Buffalo and Rocky L. Keasler of Gaffney; three grandsons, Chad Thompson and Kevin Thompson, both of Jonesville and Brad Millwood of Chester; and a step-grandson, Davin Keasler of Union.

Mr. Millwood was predeceased by a step-brother, Roger Millwood. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 214 Gin Circle, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Robert L. Nance Jr.
World War II veteran

Robert Little Nance Jr., 88, of 1508 Whitmire Highway, husband of Nannie Lou Stewart Nance, died at his residence Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003. Mr. Nance was born in Adamsburg on Nov. 27, 1914, a son of the late Robert Little Nance Sr. and Fannie Goforth Nance. Mr. Nance was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Sealtest Dairy. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army where he earned five battle stars.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia N. and Jack Wilson of Spartanburg; two granddaughters, Lindsey Thomason of Spartanburg and Marie Heckard and husband, Richard, of Rock Hill; two sisters, Gladys (Doodle) Sims and Marion Hawkins, both of Union.

Mr. Nance was predeceased by a son, Hal Nance. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Gideon Long and Dr. Kirk Neely. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Robert Morris, Chris Stewart, Marion Stewart, Jimmy Grider, Jim Stewart, Chuck Lustig, Mike Nance and David Hart. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 108 Whitmire Highway. Memorials may be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney Street, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Carl Eugene Carson Jr.
World War II veteran

Carl Eugene Carson Jr., passed away peacefully on August 28, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, Columbia, following complications from an automobile accident on April 15, 2003. The family wishes a special thanks to all the care givers at Greenville Memorial Hospital, Intermedical Hospital of S.C. and Palmetto Baptist Hospital during his valiant 136-day quest to survive.

Mr. Carson was born in Anderson on Oct. 13, 1926, to Carl Eugene Carson Sr. and Bonnie Lee McClure Carson. As an avid athlete he was captain of the Spartanburg High football team, a Shrine Bowl selectee in 1944 and a Clemson football scholarship winner under legendary coach Frank Howard from 1946 to 1950.

Mr. Carson was a proud member of the first undefeated, untied football team at Clemson in 1948. That year he played in the Gator Bowl against Missouri where he contributed to a 24-23 last minute victory. He was affectionately known to his teammates as (Sunset) Carson and to Coach Howard as (Sunshine.) Forever his blood runneth Orange ... Go Tigers! Mr. Carson (or Daddy Gene) as he was lovingly called by his seven grandchildren) was drafted and served for 18 months in the United States Navy during World War II and its aftermath.

Coach Howard recognized a good Tiger at the 1944 Shrine Bowl game and held a scholarship for him until 1946 upon his completed Navy tour. During his senior year in high school he was president of the class. After college he worked for United Merchants & Manufacturing Co. starting in a management training program. He served as personnel director for the majority of his 35-year career at the Union/Buffalo and Aragon, Ga. plants. His (people oriented) management style won him the admiration of employees and managers alike.

His community service found him on the boards of numerous organizations including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, United Way, Community Chest, Union Country Club and President of the Union High School Booster Club. He and his wife, Kitty, of 52 years, enjoyed ballroom dancing as members of several dance clubs including the Union Ballroom Dance Club and charter members of the Rose Hill Candlelight Society. His hobbies were gardening, golfing, sports, traveling/cruising, dancing and being with his family .

In 1994 he and his family were recognized as Union County Family of the Year. His family and friends will always remember his charismatic personality and his winning smile. Surviving in addition to his beloved wife are: two sons, Trey Carson of Alexandria, Va., and Ty Carson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two daughters, Len Carson Efird of Weddington, N.C., and Kit Carson Shelton of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Carson Efird, 20, Bonnie Efird, 14, Forthe Carson, 15, Ryne Carson, 12, Lindy Carson, 10, Chase Shelton, 10 and Caroline Shelton, 5.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe W. Smith and Father Edward Meeks officiating. Burial will be in the Episcopal Church of the Nativity Cemetery with military rites. Active pallbearers will be Doug Rinaca, Mike Phillips, Ellis Jenkins, Mickey Wingo, Ralph Lawson, Allen Owens, George Bruce and Lynn Eaves.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Jim Cunningham, Roy Loyd, Sonny Wilburn, Gus Diamaduros, Russell Caston, Bob Gist, Larry Wilson, Jack Rex, Carlisle Henderson, Gene Logan, Earl Bryan, Buck Vinson, Bill Goodwin, Dr. Woody Sanford and Wayne Baker, members of the Terry Lawing Sunday School Class and Mr. Carson's (Wingo) friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7 until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Salvation Army, Springdale Drive, Union or the First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main Street, Union, S.C. 29379 or to a local charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Carson.

Debra P. Harvey
Former Springs Industries employee

CLOVER Debra Petty Harvey, 44, of 102 N. Sumter St., Clover, formerly of Lockhart, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at 9:49 p.m. in Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill after an extended illness. Mrs. Harvey was born in Union on Oct. 8, 1958, a daughter of the late Leroy and Nellie Millwood Petty. She was a member of the Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Harvey was formerly employed with Springs Industries of Chester and Texaco of Chester.

Surviving are a daughter, Kristi Nicole Harvey of the home; a son, Jerry W. Leopard Jr. of York; a sister, Joyce P. Toney Putman of Union and a friend, Ray McCalister of Gastonia, N. C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers. Burial will be in the Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Randall Burns, Olin Dabbs, Lee Brannon, Tim Turner, Gonzalee Childers, Donnie Wilbanks, Ricky McCoy and Bryant Toney. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of her sister, Joyce Putman, 314 Mt. Tabor Church Road, Union, and at the home of her son, Jerry W. Leopard Jr., 1754 Conners Lane, York. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
