Janie Francis
Ohio state employee

COLUMBUS, Ohio Janie Francis, 69, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at the OSU East Medical Center. An employee of the State of Ohio for 24 years, she was preceded in death by her father, James W. Hunter and son, Vaughn McClurkin.

Surviving are her mother, Fannie M. Hunter of Whitmire; sons, Benjamin McClurkin, Mark (Rhonda) Francis and Marvin Francis; daughters, Barbara (Joseph) Johnson, Samantha Hill and Diane (James) Nichols, all of Columbus; siblings Earline Sullivan of Columbus, Marie Hodges, Bessie (Waddell) Crosby, Leone E. Hunter and Virginia Boyd, James (Ruth) Hunter, Thomas Hunter and Clarence Hunter, all of Whitmire; 19 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ms. Francis will lie in state from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the New Faith Baptist Church, 955 Oak St. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 2 pm. with Pastor Jeffrey Kee eulogizing. Burial will be at Eastlawn Cemetery. Gary Memorial Chapel, 2154 E. Main St., Columbus, Ohio, has charge of arrangements.

Dean Inman
Retired from J&W Paint

Bobby Dean Inman, 65, of 149 Union Road, husband of Tincy Brannon Inman, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at 4:50 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Inman was born in Union on Sept. 26, 1937, a son of the late Johnny and Eva Gault Inman. He attended Lockhart Free Baptist Church. Mr. Inman was retired from J&W Paint Co. of Rock Hill.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Joyce E. Neal of Union; three sons, and daughters-in-law, Rodney D. and Sandra Inman, Dale W. and Patti Inman, all of Lockhart and Dexter G. and Sally Inman of Union; four sisters, Janice Kirkpatrick of Texas, Sarah Killian of Tennessee, Shirley Gregory and Mary Wilburn, both of Union; two brothers, Bo Inman of Union and Gerald Inman of Texas; seven grandchildren, Lindsey, Caitlyn, Nichole, Bubba, Caleb, Seth, and Dexlie, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Inman was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Arthur Inman. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers and Chaplain Arthur Ray Brannon. Burial was in Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Carl Inman, Darryl Brannon, Donnie Fowler, Tim Brannon, Keith Walker and Lee Killian.

The following served as the honorary escort Allen Gowan, Michael Brannon, Lee Brannon, Franklin Thomas, Dr. Robert Wentz, J. T. Vinson, Danny Vinson and Walter Brannon. The body was at the home of his sister-in-law, Carolyn B. Rash, 118 South 5th St., Lockhart, before being placed in the church at 2 this afternoon to await the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bobby Dean Inman Fund, P.O. Box 293, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Lizzie R. Lawson
Retired from Monarch Mill

Lizzie Robinson Shetley Lawson, 92, of 709 Rice Avenue Ext., widow of Harold F. Lawson, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Lawson was born in Fairfield County on Sept. 3, 1911, a daughter of the late Joe and Sally Weir Robinson. She was the oldest member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. She was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant. Mrs. Lawson was first married to the late Dewey Shetley.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are two step-daughters, Jo Anne McKinney of Union and Brenda Billings of Pauline; a daughter-in-law, Jean B. Shetley of Union; six grandchildren, Katrina Barnes, Bill Rhymer, Stanley Rhymer, Joey Shetley, Lynn Pritchett and the Rev. James H. Billings; 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a daughter and a son, Doris Shetley Rhymer and Joe Thomas Shetley. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Randolph Pettit and the Rev. James H. Billings. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Joshua Freeman, Greg Hembree, Otis Hembree, Ralph Smith, Larry Wilson and Warren Farmer. The following great-grandchildren are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: James Shetley, Brian Bailey, Brock Rhymer, Trent Rhymer, Blake Rhymer, Adam Rhymer, Adam Rhymer, Jordan Palshan, Chase Palshan, Jeff Fowler and Russell Spires.

The family is at the home of her step-daughter, Jo Anne McKinney, 102 Birchwood Drive, and will receive friends at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Building Fund, 2153 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ernest H. Franklin
Retired from West Point Stevens

WHITMIRE Ernest H. Franklin, 74, of 2126 Highway 72, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at his home. Mr. Franklin was born in Whitmire a son of the late Ernest Foster Franklin and Leila Broom Rochester and his stepfather ,Wallace Rochester. He was retired from West Point Stevens Co., Whitmire Plant, he also retired from the Army National Guard, was a member of the Roseboro Masonic Lodge #195, a member of the American Legion and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy Farmer and Peggy Hueble, both of Whitmire; two grandchildren, Amy Foster of Newberry and Jason Hueble of Whitmire; and a number of step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Whitmire Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hospice, 1505 Blanding St., Columbia, S.C. 29201. Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.

Veta A. Hughes
Veteran/Union nurse

SPARTANBURG - Miss Veta A. Hughes, 102, a former resident of Union County, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Skylyn Place. She was the daughter of the late John Giles and Martha Orr Hughes who lived in the family home on land given by a grant from the King of England.

She was the last surviving member of 10 children. After graduation from Jonesville High School, she attended the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in their second graduating class. She started her employment with Wallace Thompson Hospital in Union as a registered nurse and later became operating room supervisor. After 62 years of faithful service, she retired at the age of 86. She actually lived on hospital premises until she was 72 years of age and was on call 24 hours a day.

Trustees dedicated and named the hospital's new surgical suite in her honor. Miss Hughes was loved and admired by many, and she devoted her entire life to caring for and giving to others. A member of Grace United Methodist Church of Union, she was an active member of the Johnnie Sanders Circle and the Culp Wagnon Sunday School Class. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross, officer of the Union Nurse's Club, member of the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and the State Association of Registered Nurses.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mazie Hughes of Spartanburg and Willene Hughes of Clinton; three nieces, Caroline Baker of Sea island, Ga., Ethel Bennett of Spartanburg and Judy Raines of Duncan; and five nephews, Robert Chapman of Spartanburg, David Hughes of Roebuck, Joe Dean Hughes of Cowpens, Russell Hughes of Saluda, and Walter Hughes of Clinton. She also had numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews; and special friends, Elwood and Barbara Eason, and Ronnie Eaves, of Union.

During the last few years as Miss Hughes health began to fail, a special member of the family, Hilda Chapman, lovingly attended to her care and needs. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Hilda, as well as Miss Hughes caretakers, Daniel Davis, Carletta Glenn, Deborah Hicks, Edith Leslie, Gladys Poole, Kindall Riddle, Sandra Riddle, Rebecca Stacey and Delma Williams, and also the staff and administration of Skylyn Place. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Byrd officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Chapman Jr., Chuck Hatchette, Darryl Holland, Walter Hughes III, Whit Kennedy Jr., Whitner Kennedy III, Jason Martin and Walter Oates Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Epworth Children's Home, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, S.C. 29250; or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C., 29302. The family is at the home of Robert and Hilda Chapman, 515 Bennett Dairy Road, Spartanburg. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Mae Martin Lawson
Retired from Pacolet Mills

Mae Martin Lawson, 86, widow of Charles R. (R.C.) Lawson, formerly of Lockhart, died Monday Sept. 8, 2003, at Oakmont Nursing Center after a long illness. Mrs. Lawson was born in Union County on June 1, 1917, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Foster Martin. She was retired from Pacolet Mills and was a member of Lockhart First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Lawson was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. (Greasy) and Nancy Lawson of Lockhart; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Sam Gettys of Union; Doris and Harold Gibson of Sharon and Betty and Berry Stepp of Lockhart; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Gene and Norma Allen of Sharon, Wayne and Sybil Allen of Jonesville, Donna Allen of Union, Jerry and Tammy Moody of Lockhart, Charles and Kim Clayton of Jonesville, Tony Lawson of Union, Dale and Patty Inman of Lockhart and Crystal Walters of Kings Mountain; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, Lawrence Junior Lawson; a sister, Effie Owensby and two brothers, Tommy Martin and Clarence Martin. Graveside services will be held at 3 pm. Wednesday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Ben Hill. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home of her son, Robert E. (Greasy) Lawson, 303 South 2nd St., Lockhart. Memorials may be made to Lockhart First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 190, Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Carrie Smith
Former textile worker

Carrie Smith, 83, of 221 S. Boyce St., died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003. Mrs. Smith was born in Union County on Sept. 6, 1919, a daughter of the late Robert Smith and Mary Dawkins Smith. She attended Union County schools and worked in several mills within the county.

Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Harris and Beverly Smith, both of Union; four sons, Bennie (Bell) Smith, Dennis (Ruth) Smith, Donald (Jessie) Smith and Faye (Patsy) Smith, all of Union; two god daughters, Sharon L. Smith of Union and Candice M. Smith of Charleston; two sisters, Lillie Ruth Rice of Union and Theodora Williams of Charlotte; and a daughter-in-law, Geneva Smith of Union.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial was in the Mt. Olive Church Cemetery. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Senn Williamson
Retired waitress

INMAN Gertrude Senn Williamson, 83, of 63 Blackstock Road, Inman, widow of Clay S. Williamson Sr., passed away at 7:14 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 at Magnolia Manor of Inman. Mrs. Williamson was born in Union on Thursday, Sept. 2, 1920, the daughter of the late Leonard Boyd and Leila Gertrude (Stevens) Senn. She was a retired waitress at the Peach Blossom Restaurant. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by a son, Clay S. Williamson Jr. of Boiling Springs; three sisters, Ruth Huggins, Sue Blackwell and Grace James, all of Union; five grandchildren, Heather Johnston of Spartanburg; Asia, Jamie, Cassie and Lexi Williamson, all of Boiling Springs; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Nathan, and Carson Johnston, all of Spartanburg. She was predeceased by two brothers, Emerson Senn and L.B. Senn and a granddaughter, Sierra Williamson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Seawright Funeral Chapel, Inman, with the Rev. Joe Geddes officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg. The family is at the home of her son, Clay S. Williamson Jr., 112 Hilldale Dr., Boiling Springs, and will receive friends Wednesday an hour before the service at Seawright Funeral Chapel. Seawright Funeral Home of Inman has charge of arrangements.

Rickey T. Babb
Former cab driver

Rickey Thomas Babb, 44, of 402 Railroad St., husband of Arlene Sumner Babb, died at his residence Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at 6:15 a.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Babb was born in Union on April 1, 1959, a son of Nellie Lunsford Babb Cartee of Union and the late Jesse Thomas Babb. He was formerly employed with U-Need-A-Cab Co.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are: his step-father, Willie Cartee of Union; a daughter, Sandy Babb of the home; two sisters, Debbie Davis of Buffalo and Tonya Sulton of Union; a brother, Donnie Babb of Union; three nieces, a nephew and six great-nieces. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Frank Cartee.

Active pallbearers will be J.P. Cipriano, Johnny Cipriano, Robert Cipriano, Randy Davis, Donnie Babb, Johnson Horne and Willie Cartee. After 3 p.m. today the body will be at the home, 402 Railroad St., where it will remain until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
