SMITH, Mildred
Mildred Boykin Smith, 88, of Ridgeland, widow of J. Desmond Smith, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at a Beaufort hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Smith was born November 26, 1913, in Sylvania, Ga., the daughter of James Boykin and Madie Scott Boykin. She was a homemaker and a member of Ridgeland Baptist Church.
Survivors include, two sons, Dennis Smith, Walterboro, S.C., Larry Smith, Varnville, S.C.; two daughters, Patsy Cook, Zebulon, N.C., Judy Tuten, Ridgeland, S.C.; one brother, Gerald Boykin, Pt. Wentworth, Ga.; four sisters, Geraldine McGraw, Pt. Wentworth, Ga., Mary Ellen Busch, Dennison, Ohio, Eunice Peavey, Pt. Wentworth, Ga., Marjorie Laffitte, Pt. Wentworth, Ga.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at Ridgeland Baptist Church, Thursday, April 4, 2002, 11 a.m. Burial will be in Sand Hill cemetery, Varnville.
Visitation at SAULS FUNERAL HOME, RIDGELAND, Wednesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m.

BUNTON, Jr., Rudolph
SAVANNAH, GA. - TSGT. Rudolph "Rudy" Bunton, Jr., 74, died on Tuesday, April 2, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
The Walterboro, S.C., native was a member of the Powers Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Air Force and received the following medals while serving his country, Service Medal for time in Vietnam and Korea, Military Merit, Cross of Military Service awarded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Air Force Commendation Award, Occupation Medal for time spent in Germany, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Bunton also retired from the State of Georgia and was an avid fisherman and gardener.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Betty Bunton of Savannah; five daughters, Diane McGowan of Effingham County, Donnie Turner of Newnan, DeLois Boger of Savannah, Carol Lane of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Jean Jackson of Springfield; two sisters, Rosa Lee Fletcher and Matalou Davis, both of Beaufort, S.C.; both of Beaufort, S.C.; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews; Mr. Bunton was preceded in death by a grandchild.
Visitation, 5 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, April 4, at the THOMAS C. STRICKLAND & SONS FUNERAL HOME, WEST CHATHAM CHAPEL in Pooler.
Graveside funeral will be noon on Friday, April 5, at Beaufort National cemetery with full military honors.

GODEFROY, Hugh
MYRTLE BEACH - Dr. Hugh C. Godefroy, 82, died Wednesday, April 03, 2002, at his home.
He was born October 28, 1919, in Java, former Dutch East Indies, the son of the late Constant and Maude McLachlin Godefroy.
He moved from Grand Mere, Quebec to Conway, S.C. in 1961 and established a practice in anesthesiology and family medicine. He returned to Quebec in 1973 to establish a multi-specialty clinic in Hudson and practice there until 1978. He then moved back to S.C. and continued a practice in family medicine in Surfside Beach until his retirement in 1994.
He attended the University of Toronto and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University in Montreal. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and became one of the highest decorated Canadian aces in World War II. His combat missions, flying Hurricanes and the legendary Spitfire, earned him the British Distinguished Service Order, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, and France’s Croix de Guerre with Gold Star. In 1943 he was made Wing Commander Flying and assumed command of the legendary RAF ace, Johnnie Johnson’s 127 Wing. He chronicled his experiences during the war in a book, Lucky Thirteen, published in 1983.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Myrtle Beach, a life member and former president of the Canadian Fighter Pilots’ Association, Caterpillar Club, the Flight 77 Order of Daedalians, Palaver Club, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, Canadian, American, and S.C. Medical Associations
Survivors include his wife of forty years, Hope Tallevast Godefroy, three sons, David Godefroy of Jasper, TX and his wife Ginger, Allan Stalvey of Columbia, SC and his wife Karen, Scott Godefroy of Augusta, GA; two daughters, Isabel Hodge of Mississauga, Ontario and her husband Ian and Sarah Hope Smith of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C. and her husband Jackson, thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Constance Helm Godefroy.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Cole officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery, directed by GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, CONWAY CHAPEL.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the residence, 11 San Marks, Antigua, Myrtle Beach.

BOWMAN, Evelyn
Walterboro - Evelyn Bowman, 74, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 in Charleston, SC. The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, April 4, 2002 at 1:00 pm at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Wayne G. Carter, Pastor. Burial directed by MAREE TRACY Funeral Home will be in Heavenly Rest cemetery.

CANTWELL, Jr. John
Departed this life on the morning of April 2, 2002, John Dalzell Cantwell, Jr., widower of Margaret Jean Simpson Cantwell, residence, Mount Pleasant, SC. Mr. Cantwell was born July 17, 1909 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of John Dalzell Cantwell, Sr. and Mary Taylor Cantwell.
He is survived by one daughter, C.J. Cantwell of Charleston, SC, one son, John Dalzell Cantwell, III of Berkeley, California, and two grandsons, Zachary Davis Cantwell and Ethan A.T. Cantwell-Igleheart.

HARRISON, Bessie
Bessie Caldwell Harrison, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., died Monday, April 1, 2002, in a local hospital. Born October 2, 1909, in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of Richard and Eunice Bacot Caldwell. A graduate of Mitchell College in Statesville, N.C., Mrs. Harrison was a retired Proof Reader for the Charleston News and Courier. A member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, she belonged to the church's Sunday School, the Women of the Church, Circle #3, and worked with the "Pelican" church newsletter. Mrs. Harrison was preceded in death by her husband William B. Harrison. She is survived by a cousins, Richard Bacot Stall of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Newton Stall of Greenville, S.C. The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2002, at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church with burial in Mt. Pleasant Lutheran cemetery.
