Kathleen S. Bateman
Robinson Business College graduate

Kathleen Sullivan Bateman of 2147 Spartanburg Highway, Pacolet, passed away the morning of Oct. 4, 2003, at Oakmont Nursing Home in Union after many years of declining health. A lifelong resident of Union County, Kathleen was the daughter of the late Will and Nell Isreal Sullivan and the widow of Joseph Bateman Sr. Her brother, J.W. (Jake) Sullivan predeceased her.

Kathleen was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Union High School and Robinson Business College of Spartanburg. She was employed many years at Union Federal Savings and Loan, Belk's of Union and also Union Insurance Company.

Kathleen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her son, Joseph (Joe-Joe) Bateman Jr. of the home. She also is survived by a niece, several nephews and many cousins. Kathleen Bateman, or Kat, as her friends called her, was the one person whom one could count on for support or sympathy in one's trying times.

She always knew how to show love, concern and compassion for others. This trait never left her even after she was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and endured many treatments that left her mentally and physically exhausted. Her face would be one of the first that friends saw during both good and bad times. She would still smile and say, Everything's gonna be all right.

Doing for others seemed to make her the happiest. Kat was gifted in making handcrafted items which she shared with all her friends during holidays and birthdays. She always gave away more than she kept. Kathleen loved her family and was a devoted mother to her only son. She was always there for him if need be. She loved her church family and gave her best to them as well.

One of Kathleen's favorite Bible passages is I Corinthians 13. Verses 4 and 13 are very descriptive of her: Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Graveside services for Kathleen will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Joseph W. Smith. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, care of Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, East Main St., Union, 29379; or to Palmetto Home Health Hospice, P.O. Box 352, Newberry, 29108. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
