THOMPSON, Lee
Lee White Thompson, 94, of Hanahan, entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of October 15, 2002, after a long illness.
A funeral service will be held, 2 p.m., Friday, October 18, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, burial to follow in Carolina Memorial Park.
Born on February 4, 1908, in Bonneau, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Arthur H. White and Nora Mitchum White.
Mrs. Thompson was retired from Garco Asbestos. She was a member of Free Will Baptist Church at Chapparal in Moncks Corner. Mrs. Thompson was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Thompson was predeceased by a son, Goldsmith Thompson.
Survivors include, her daughter, Margaret Carter of Hanahan, grandson and wife, Charles G. Carter and Deborah of Goose Creek, a sister, Irma Hill, of Lebannon, S.C., four great-grandchildren, Ashley Carter, David Carter, Hunter Carter, and Haliegh Carter, all of Goose Creek.
The family will receive friends 12:30 to 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 18, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, S.C.

BREWER, Paul
HIGH POINT - Paul Vernon Brewer, 88, of Evergreens, N.C., formerly of Skeet Club Manor, High Point, N.C., died October 14, 2002, in High Point Regional Hospital, High Point, N.C. Graveside funeral services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at Lakeview Memorial Park. Rev. David Horton will officiate.
Mr. Brewer was born August 10, 1914, to the late James Nathan and Mary Frances Bauguess Brewer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was employed with Sperry Univac for 35 years.
Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ron Moore, of Jamestown; son and daughter-in-law, James and Nancy Brewer, of Charleston, S.C.; brother, William Brewer, grandchildren, Jan Sapp, Amy Farina, Mark Moore, Warren Brewer, Wendy Sullivan, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.

HOWARD, Catherine
The relatives and friends of Mrs. Catherine R. Howard, Residence, 16-A Kracke St., Charleston, S.C., and those of her children, Karen H. Bryant (Alex), Melvin Howard, Sr., and the late Craig Stanley Howard. Her brothers, Samuel Richardson (Eva), James Richardson, Bernard Richardson (Geraldine), her sisters, Amelia Gaines, Mary Lawrence, Constance Brown (Kelly), and Mable Wilder (Jefferson), her granddaughter, Angela J. Bryant, her grandsons, Melvin St. Clair Howard, III, Brandon Moore, and Brandon James. Her parents, the late Samuel and Maude Richardson; her husband, the late Melvin Howard, Sr., her nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services on Saturday, October 19, 2002, at 1 o'clock p.m. in New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church, 22 Elizabeth St., Charleston, S.C. Rev. Francis Covington, Pastor. Inhumation, St. Peters R.C. cemetery, North Charleston, S.C.
Friends may call at Harleston-Boags Funeral Home, Inc., on Friday, October 18, 2002, from 3 to 5 p.m. Mrs. Catherine R. Howard will lie-in-state in New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church, 22 Elizabeth St., Charleston, S.C., from 6 to 8 p.m. Family hour at the church from 7 to 8 p.m.

The relatives and friends of Mrs. Dorothy M. Smiley and those of her son, Ronald (Carolyn) Smiley, daughter-in-law, Doris Fults, step-daughters, Alfreda (Issac) LaBoard and Alice (John) Wright, brother, Ellis (Bernice) Edwards, sisters-in-law, Rena Smiley, Dora Lee Edwards and Anna Belle Edwards, grands, greatgrands, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services, Friday, October 18, 2002, 1 PM at New Webster United Methodist Church, 4755 Bears Bluff Road, Wadmalaw Island, SC. Rev. Angelin Simmons, Officiating, Rev. Warren Murdock, Eulogist. Interment: New Webster United Methodist Church cemetery. The relatives and friends of Mr. Eugene Dent, those of his wife, Mrs. Helen Dent, his children, Messrs. David and Don Dent. Mses. HOOVER, John
John Andrew Hoover, of Mount Pleasant, SC, husband of Sonia Gatter Hoover died Wednesday, October 16, 2002 in a local hospital. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Hoover are invited to attend the funeral services of the former Saturday, October 19, 2002 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 1:00 o'clock. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at STUHR'S MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Saturday one hour prior to service.
Mr. Hoover was born in Altoona, PA the son of Allen and Margaret C. Hoover. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and a US Navy Veteran of World War II. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Industrial Engineering and retired from University of Delaware as Director of Supporting Services.
Surviving are his wife of Mount Pleasant, SC; four sons, Michael N. Hoover of North Charleston, SC; John A. Hoover, Jr., of Newark, Delaware; Steven C. Hoover of Newark, Delaware and Bruce G. Hoover of Bloxom, VA; one daughter, Carol H. Balabushka of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Richard Hoover, of Altoona, PA and one sister, Dorothy Dawson of PA; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

SWEZEY, Leon
SUMMERTON - Leon G. Swezey, 78, of 1075 Hickory Drive, Summerton, S.C., died at a Charleston area hospital, Wednesday, October 16, 2002. Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Saturday at BRYANT FUNERAL HOME in St. George, S.C. The family will receive family and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service. Dennis Card will be officiating.
Mr. Swezey was born March 27, 1924, in Blue Point, Long Island, N.Y., a son of the late John Henry Swezey and Elsie Mabel Fish Swezey. He was a retired line foreman for the Long Island Lighting Company and an Army veteran of W.W.II where he received the Bronze Star for action in the Battle of the Bulge.
A member and former Chief of the Blue Point Fire Department and member of the IBEW Union. Surviving, his wife, Shirley Ritchie Swezey, Summerton, S.C., two sons, Donald Warren Swezey, Summerton, S.C., and Edward Robert Swezey, Englewood, Fla., two daughters, Karen Lee Siemen, Las Vegas, Nev., Barbara Shirley Kilthau, Blue Point, N.Y. A sister, Madeline Huber, Crisfield, Md., 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

SMALLS, Dorothy
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of Wednesday, October 16, 2002, Mrs. Dorothy Smalls. Residence, 720 A King St., Charleston, S.C. She is the beloved mother of Willie Capers, Jr. (Jackie) of Chattanooga, Tenn., Anthony Capers (Tracey) of Minneapolis, Minn., Rosalyn Smalls, the late Bernard Capers and the late Raymond Seels. WILEY, Elvera
Elvera Matheson Wiley, 89, widow of Richard Eugene Wiley, of Summerville, S.C., died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Funeral services will be held at Parks Funeral Home Chapel, Friday morning, October 18, 2002, at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Parks Funeral Home this Thursday evening from 6 to 9 o'clock. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Lutheran Hospice, 753 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Suite 100, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. 29464.
Mrs. Simmons was born March 10, 1913, in Newberry, S.C., a daughter of Matthew B. Matheson and Martha J. Kinsey Matheson. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one grandson, Michael Snipes of Columbia, S.C., three granddaughters, June Smith, Lisa Leslie, both of Summerville, Tami Linker of James Island, S.C., 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter, Brenda Barker and one grandson, Billy Hadwin.

RESSE, Rosa
Rosa Nell McGuire Resse, 87, of Summerville, S.C., died Monday, October 14, 2002, at home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19, 2002, at 2 o'clock at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union, West Va., with Pastor Harold Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Carmel cemetery at Gap Mills, W.Va. Family will receive friends this Friday from 6 to 8 o'clock at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home.

She was born May 3, 1915, at Gap Mills, W.Va., a daughter of the late James Harland and Una Wylie McGuire. She was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin P. Hall, two sons, Percy and Basil Frederick Hall, one grandson, Donald Lee Skelton; four brothers, James, Lawrence, Malcolm and Basil McGuire; four sisters, Ethelene Cook, Ola Blankenship, Inez McGuire and Rossie Harris.
Surviving are four sons, Jack, Ivan, Sammy and Michael Hall, all of Maryland; three daughters, Shirley Graham and Becky Martin, both of South Carolina and Vera Liddick of Virginia; one brother, Billy Joe McGuire of Union, W.Va.; one sister, Dreama Lyle of Sandston, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Craven Simmons, 70, of Summerville, S.C., wife of Ralph Lee Simmons, died Monday, October 14, 2002, at a Summerville hospital.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of God of Prophecy, Summerville, S.C., Thursday afternoon, October 17, 2002, at 1 o'clock. Burial will be in Summerville cemetery. Friends may call at the church one-half hour prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted.
