CAPERS, Minnie
Mrs. Minnie Capers, 79, of Orleans Road, Charleston, died September 24, 2002. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Monday, September 30, 2002, Springfield Baptist Church, Vance, S.C. Rev. Gary D. Miller. Burial, Springfield Baptist Church cemetery.
She was born November 22, 1922, in Orangeburg County. She was employed by New York City for approximately 40 years. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and worked on the Missionary Board. She also attended Noah's Ark Baptist Church in Charleston, S.C.
Survivors include, two sons, Deacon Robert Capers, Jr., and Richard Capers; two daughters-in-law, Hazel Capers and Geneva Capers; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

BYERS, Marilyn
Entered into eternal rest Sunday, September 29, 2002, Marilyn Margaret Byers, residence, Mount Pleasant, S.C. Friends may call Tuesday, October 1, 2002, between 6 and 8 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The funeral and burial will be private.
Ms. Byers was born July 7, 1956, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a daughter of the late Richard Donald and Margaret Jacqueline Young Byers. She was a graduate of Lewiston-Porter High School, Youngtown, N.Y.
She is survived by her sister, Lori Bank, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; her brother, Richard Byers, Goose Creek, S.C.; her two nieces, Brenda Rodenberg, Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Lauren Byers, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; her great-niece, Elizabeth Rodenberg, Mount Pleasant, S.C.

GRAMLING, Sara
Sara Lee Guess Gramling, 76, of Moncks Corner, a retired elementary school teacher, died Saturday at a Charleston hospital.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, will be at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Park cemetery, Orangeburg.
Mrs. Gramling was born September 13, 1926, in Blackville, S.C., a daughter of William Samuel Guess, Sr., and Annie Lou Collins Guess. After graduating from high school in Blackville, S.C., she attended Winthrop College and graduated from Columbia College in 1947 with a degree in Education. She taught elementary school in Central, Myrtle Beach, and Moncks Corner. She was faithful, active member, Sunday School teacher, and youth leader at the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C., from 1950-1965. She volunteered for the Lions Club with the Sun Fun Parade and Sun Fun Festival Police and served as a Cub Scout Leader. After moving to Moncks Corner, S.C., 1965, she was a faithful, active member, Sunday School teacher, and wedding director of the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Seavy Carroll Circle of United Methodist Women. She served as a member of the Berkeley County Columbia College Club, the first Berkeley County Zoning Committee, the Berkeley County Voting Poll Workers, Berkeley County Museum, and the Berkeley County Cancer Society R.A.T. Ball.
Sara Lee was a kind, true Christian woman who generously loved her family, church, friends, and community. Always with love and laughter, she enjoyed cooking; entertaining family and friends; fishing for rockfish; knitting dishcloths; making angels, arts and crafts; decorating and arranging flowers for holidays, church and community events. Although she will be sadly missed, she will always be remembered as a center piece of strength, happily and selflessly giving of her time and talents to anyone in need.
Surviving are her husband, Clarence S. Gramling, of 56 years, of Moncks Corner; daughter, Martha Ann Gramling Taylor Stuckey and husband, Dexter Lee Stuckey, Jr., of Mt. Pleasant; son, Steven Guess Gramling and wife, Peggy Ann McQuown Gramling of Moncks Corner; two sisters, Martha Caughman (the late Archie Caughman) of Sumter; Mae (G.W.) Davis of Florence; two brothers, W.S. "Buck" (Arie Black) Guess of Blackville; Robert L. (Tonya) Guess of Lincolnton, Ga.; two grandsons, Kevin Earl Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, Lee Steven Gramling of Moncks Corner; three granddaughters, Era Lynn Gramling, Margaret Eleanor Gramling, and Sara Guess Gramling, all of Moncks Corner; 12 nieces and 12 nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may call at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday evening. Mrs. Gramling was preceded in death by a son in 1994, Clarence Dennis Gramling of Moncks Corner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church Building Fund, 200 North Live oak Drive, Moncks Corner, S.C. 29461, or to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, S.C. 29406, or to the charity of one's choice.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude especially to Drs. Angus S. Baker, Telfair H. Parker, Samuel C. Franklin, Jr., Richard D. Benson and staffs, our compassionate and faithful pastors, the wonderful Roper Hospital 5 South nurses and staff, the caring staff at Cooper Hall Assisted Living, dear family and friends for their loving care, support, and many prayers.

BENDT, Pauline
Entered into eternal rest on the evening of September 28, 2002, Pauline H. Bendt. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services in St. Barnabas Lutheran Church Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at 10 o'clock. Interment, Bethany cemetery. Miss Bendt was born July 13, 1913, in Charleston, S.C., a daughter of Charles John Bendt and Isabelle Beckmann Bendt. She was a retired employee of South Carolina Electric and Gas Company and a member of St. Barnabas Lutheran Church.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, 45 Moultrie St., Charleston, S.C. 29403.

METTS, Lurline
Entered into eternal rest on the evening of September 28, 2002, Lurline Dukes Metts, widow of Barney M. Metts. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services in Harbor Light Baptist Church, Wednesday, at 11 o'clock. Interment, St. George cemetery, St. George, S.C. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Tuesday between 6 and 8 o'clock.
Mrs. Metts was born August 4, 1917, in Varnville, S.C., a daughter of Thomas David Dukes and Beatrice Murdaugh Dukes. She was a member of Harbor Light Baptist Church. She worked as a wrapper at American Tobacco Factory and as an L.P.N. at the Franke Home.
She is survived by one son, Barney M. Metts, Jr., of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Frances Metts Castamore of Fair Hope, Ala., Merry Metts DuPuis of Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, John T. Hnatishion, Robert Hnatishion, Andrea H. Whilden, Cindy High, Dennie T. Metts; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas Dukes of Charleston, S.C., and Joseph Dukes of Johnsonville, S.C.

SMALLS, Estell
Mrs. Estell White Smalls, "Muffin, " of 1017 Pineland Street, Vance, SC 29163, died Friday, September 27, 2002 at Trident Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. The funeral will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at 12 PM in Rock Hill AME Church, with Rev. John Paul Brown officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill AME Church cemetery.
She was born on June 15, 1942 to loving parents, James White, Sr. and the late Lula Bell Gaines White. She was a graduate of Roberts High School (Class of 1960) and a member of Rock Hill AME Church. While a member of Rock Hill AME Church, she served as a member of the Senior Choir and Missionary Board. She was also Treasurer of the H&W Social Club and a former member of the Eastern Stars.
Survivors include her husband, Nehemiah L. Smalls of the home; daughters, Tawana (Rodney) Smalls-Howard of Vance, Suzette Small of Charleston, West Virginia; two grandchildren, Kayce and Jessica Smalls of Vance; father, James White, Sr.; sisters, Betty Garner, Vernell Wright, Ruth Williams, all of Vance, Rachel Sistrunk; brother, James White, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Roseanna Yeadon, Mary Johnson; brothers-in-law, Paul Smalls, Peter Smalls, and Elijah Smalls.

MT. PLEASANT - Graveside services for Mary Frances Mathews Goldberg, 75, formerly of Columbia, will be held Monday at 11:30 AM in Hebrew Benevolent Society cemetery, Columbia. Mrs. Goldberg, wife of the late Barnett Goldberg, died Saturday, September 28, 2002. Born in Siloam, NC, she was a daughter of the late Virgil William and Lucy Emma Shore Mathews. She was a former member of Beth Shalom Synagogue, Columbia, and former teacher with Richland School District 1.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Amiel and Kirsten Goldberg of Denver, CO, Craig and Rhonda Goldberg of Mt. Pleasant; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Loline Mathews of Richmond, VA, Charles and Betty Mathews of Siloam, NC, Virgil and Marie Mathews of Pinnacle, NC; sister, Bess Mathews of Siloam, NC; sister-in-law, Nellie Mathews of Siloam, NC.

MORLEY, Lloyd
Lloyd F. Morley, Sr., 78, of Medora, Indiana, loving husband of 57 years to Edna A. Treadway Morley, passed to the other side on Saturday, September 28, 2002. Born in Buckskin, Indiana to the late Clarence Henry and Hilda Ethel Swartz Morley. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in WWII. Mr. Morley retired as a manager of The General Services Administration. He was a member of the Mason's Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Eastern Star, and a Noble of the Boumi Temply of Baltimore, Maryland. Lloyd and his family have been active members of the Columbus Region - Model "A" Ford Restorers Club for approximately twenty years. Surviving children are Lloyd F. Morley, II of Charleston, SC; Laura Eileen Etzel of Baltimore, MA, and Edwin D. Morley of Medora, Ind.; a sister, Marion Scott; three brothers, Gus Williams, Howard (Buddy) Morley, James Morley. Lloyd is a grandfather of five and great-grandfather of seven. MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC 722-8371, is assisting with local arrangements. SWAIN, Hilda
Hilda M. Swain, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died at her residence September 26, 2002. The daughter of George E. and Bella Baker Swain, she was born in Baden, PA, May 6, 1909. She attended Ambridge PA High School, and Post-Graduate Schools in Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Charleston, SC. She was a clerk at Charleston Naval Shipyard from 1942 until her retirement in 1967. Miss Swain was a former member of The Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Cathedral Catholic Women's Club, a member of the Cathedral Choir and a member of the NARFE. she was presently a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church. Miss Swain was the last surviving member of fifteen children. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 30, 2002 at 11:00 AM in Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, SC. Interment will follow at Holy Cross cemetery, James Island, SC. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 267 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401 or to Stella Maris Catholic Church. MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, is assisting the Swain family.

SMITH, Regina
Regina Bornstein Smith, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, September 28, 2002 in a local hospital.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2002, 2 PM in Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 1, 1921. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Joseph Bornstein and Yetta Amster Bornstein. Mrs. Smith was retired from the Naval Station Charleston where she worked as a secretary for the Chaplin's Office. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church of North Charleston for over fifty years and recently attended Hibben United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Smith was a former resident of Hanahan, and was a recent resident of Cooper Hall.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence L. Smith, of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Linda Smith Rhyne and husband Craig Rhyne, Sr. of Mt Pleasant; two sons, Fredrick L. Smith and wife Carol Ann Smith of Goose Creek, Andrew C. Smith and wife Donna G. Smith of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Freida Gordon of West Palm Beach, Florida; one brother, Martin Bornstein of New York City, NY; and four grandchildren, Craig Rhyne, Jr., Joseph Rhyne, Austin Smith, and Kimberly Ann Smith; one great-grandchild, Craig Rhyne, III.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 1, 2002, from 12:30 PM to service time at 2:00 PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 144 Remount Road, North Charleston or to Hibben United Methodist Church Bus Fund, 690 Coleman Blvd., Mount Pleasant. Arrangements are being handled by CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME.
