HEYWARD, Hattie
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of September 13, 2002, Mrs. Hattie Jones Heyward, widow of Mr. Eddie Heyward of Wadmalaw Island, SC. Beloved mother of Mr. John Jones (Florence) of Charlotte, NC, Mr. Harry Heyward (Earline) of Charleston, SC; sister of Mr. Johnnie Jones (Annabel), Mr. Washie Jones (Bertha), both of Charleston, SC; step-mother of Allie Taylor (Ben) of New York, James Heyward (Pearl) of Maryland, Mary B. Porter (Charlie) of Hollywood, SC, Dorothy Bolton of Charleston, SC (the late Spencer Heyward), (Barbara), the late William Heyward (the late Emily), (a host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews). MIXSON, SR., Jim
Mr. Jim Mixson, Sr., 76, of Varnville, died Saturday evening in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
Born April 28, 1926 in Hampton County, he was the son of the late Joe Lee Mixson and Lila Mae Peeples Mixson. He had been a heavy equipment operator in the construction business, was a co-founder and minister at the St. Helena Baptist Church in Beaufort County and was a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church near Varnville.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Elizer Mixson of the home; 1 son, Jim Mixson, Jr. of Varnville; 3 daughters, Levinna King, Elease Smith, and Cathy Crews, all of Varnville; 1 sister, Mattie Lee Blankenship of Sheldon. There are 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM in the Sand Hill Baptist Church with burial following in the Deep Branch Baptist Church cemetery near Varnville, directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME OF HAMPTON.
Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton from 6 until 9 PM on Monday evening and until 10 AM on Tuesday when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.

WIDENER, Jasper
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper P. Widener of New Grade Rd., Moncks Corner, SC, are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, 1:00 PM Tuesday afternoon, September 17, 2002, in the CHAPEL OF DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER. Interment will be in Plantation Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM this Monday evening.

GIBSON, Inez
Mrs. Inez Thames Gibson, 88, of Early Branch, the widow of Simmie Gibson, died Saturday evening at the Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born March 26, 1914 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie James Thames and Eliza Mixson Thames. Mrs. Gibson was a homemaker and was a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church where she was a member and former teacher of the T E L Sunday School class was well as a member of the WMU.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Margie Gibson of Anderson, Jimmie and Celie Gibson, Linwood and Henrietta Gibson, Dennis and Miriam Gibson, Perry and Betsy Gibson, all of Cummings, and Chester and Claudia Gibson of Hepzibah, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Cathlene and Michael Pierce, Sr. of Cummings; brother, Edward Thames of Beaufort; sisters, Bessie Owens and Frances Kaskin, both of Hampton, Sheila Smith of Orangeburg, Roberta Johnson of Varnville and Barbara Johnson of Lexington. There are 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Marlene Gibson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 PM in the Sand Hill Baptist Church with burial in the Sand Hill cemetery, conducted by Rev. Richard Gibson and Rev. Glenn Samples, and directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME OF HAMPTON.
Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton after 6 PM on Monday evening and until 1 PM on Tuesday when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.
The family suggests that those who wish may make memorials to the Sand Hill Baptist Church, Rt. 1, Varnville, SC 29944.

CHASTEEN, Virginia
Virginia Damewood Chasteen, 91, of Apple Valley, Calif., died September 4, 2002.
Virginia Chasteen was a retired librarian with the South Carolina school system for 35 years. She was a life member of Holy Cross Episcopalian Church on Sullivan's Island, S.C., an Eastern Star, and attended St. Hilary's Episcopal Church, Hesperia, and also Jess Ranch Community Church.
Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Gene Cable of Apple Valley, Calif.; grandson and wife, Thomas and Cyndi Cable, Kersey, Colo.; grandson, William Cable, North Hollywood, Calif.; and granddaughter and husband, Karen and Thomas Ventrone, Boone, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Sullivan's Island, 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 18. Burial in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, S.C.
Memorial contributions may be made in Virginia Chasteen's name to Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 2520 Middle St., Sullivan Island, S.C.

BECK, Werner
Werner Beck, MD, 63, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at his residence. Dr. Beck was born in Breslau, Germany, September 10, 1939, a son of Drs. Werner and Ilse Beck. Dr. Beck was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his BA degree in 1961, West Virginia University School of Medicine, his MD in 1965, and his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He was a partner in Lowcountry Internal Medicine and practiced at Trident Hospital and was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan's Island. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at Stella Maris Church. Place of burial to be announced. Friends may call at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, EAST COOPER CHAPEL, 1520 Rifle Range Road, 884-3833, between the hours of 5:30 and 7:30, Monday, September 16, where the Vigil Wake Service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Survivors include one son, W. Peter Beck and his wife Laura of Charleston, two daughters, Victoria Beck Newman and her husband James of Buffalo, N.Y., Susan Beck Ballenger and her husband Jim of the Isle of Palms, sister, Ingrid Beck Bromby of Raleigh, N.C., three grandchildren and Jean Sinclair Beck, former wife and friend.

GREENWOOD, Cecil
Cecil Louis Greenwood, Jr., 81, of Summerville, widower of Eva Lee Greenwood, died Friday.
Mr. Greenwood was born on November 11, 1920, in Paola, Okla., the son of Cecil Louise Greenwood, Sr., and Louise Greenwood. He was employed by Joseph Floyd Manor as a superintendent. He was a Methodist and a veteran of the Navy.
Surviving are three daughters, Sandra Mahon of Summerville, Esther Murphy of Summerville, and Paula Patrick of North Charleston; a brother, Bill Greenwood of Florida; a sister, Jenny Greenwood of Florida; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by TRI-COUNTY CREMATION CENTER, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville, S.C. 29485.

WALDREP, JR., Alfred
Alfred Carson "Popi" Waldrep, Jr., husband, father, grandfather, surgeon, fisherman, and gentleman, passed away on September 13, 2002.
Dr. Waldrep was born in Orange, Texas, on April 17, 1923. After working alongside his father in the oilfields of Galveston Bay, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he met Dorothy Inez Turcan, his one and true love for the next 60 years.
While working to pay his tuition in graduate school, he played on the 1945 National Basketball Championship Team for Loyola (N.O.). Dr. Waldrep received many professional honors for his work in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, which included a 22 year military career prior to being invited to help build and expand the MUSC College of Dental Medicine. He served tirelessly until his retirement as Assistant Dean on June 30, 1985. Recognizing his dedication to youth development, Dr. Waldrep was honored for his participation at every level to help develop the James Island YMCA.
His greatest love, and the accomplishment, for which he had the most pride, was that for his family: Dorothy, his wife of 56 years; son, Alfred Carson Waldrep, III, of Charleston; daughter, Deborah Anne of Braxton, Miss., and her husband, Don Ethredge and their daughters Landrie, Alexa, Elise and Tavia; son, Lt. Col Douglas Alan Waldrep, Md., of Washington, D.C., his wife, Heda and their daughters Megan and Caraline; and son Donald J. Waldrep, DMD, MD, of California, and his wife, Lisa.
Dr. Waldrep is the son of the late Alfred and Corinne Waldrep. He is survived by his sisters, Perle Dumas of Monroe, La., and Miriam Rowe of Baytown, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to a charity of one's choice.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Sunday, September 15, 2002, 5 to 7 p.m., at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 150 Wentworth St., 722-8371.
Funeral service Monday, September 16, 2002, 11 a.m.
Burial at Holy Cross cemetery following the service.

WILSON, Bishop
ANDREWS - Bishop Wilson, 57, died Friday, September 13, 2002, at the Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Sunday, September 15, 2002, at the Spring Pond Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will follow in the Andrews Memorial cemetery, directed by ANDREWS CHAPEL OF MCKENZIE FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Wilson was born December 2, 1944, in Williamsburg County, a son of Arthur James Wilson and Bertie Martin Wilson. He was educated in the Georgetown County School District. He was a retired maintenance supervisor with Kingstree Knits, and was employed with Oneita Knitting Mills for a number of years. He loved playing the guitar and singing, playing golf, where he participated in several tournaments. He was chairman of the Spring Pond cemetery Committee for many years, and worked with the Disaster Relief of the South Carolina Pentecostal Holiness Conference, a member of the Boety Bay Hunting Club, 3 County Senior Citizens Golf Association, Happy Season Golf Association of Manning, and was a member of the Spring Pond Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a musician of the church choir.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his wife Earlene P. Wilson.
Surviving are, three brothers, A.D. Wilson of Georgetown; Rev. Woodrow Wilson of Bonneau; Charles Timothy Wilson of Andrews; two sisters, Verna W. Howard and Frances W. Cumbee both of Andrews; a very special close friend, Elaine Powers of Andrews; 14 nieces and nephews.

LONG, Fannie
COLUMBIA - Graveside service for Fannie Schaeffer Long, 33, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church cemetery, Congaree. Memorials may be made to Richland Memorial Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center, or to St. John's Episcopal Church, Congaree. Visitation will be Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m., at DUNBAR FUNERAL HOME, DEVINE STREET CHAPEL.
Fannie died Friday, September 13, 2002. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of Chuck and Blanche Davis Schaeffer. A graduate of Columbia College, she retired from the S.C. Department of Mental Health. She was a violinist with the South Carolina Youth Orchestra and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Congaree.
Fannie was talented and gifted in many ways and will be sadly missed and remembered by all who knew her.
Surviving are her husband, Joey Long; step-daughter, Nikki Long; her parents of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Donny Schaeffer and Sunday Lempesis Schaeffer of Charleston; sister and brother-in-law, Blanche S. and Jed Holliday of Columbia; niece, Kyra Schaeffer, and nephews, Chase Schaeffer, Edward, Sims and Davis Holliday; and her beloved dogs, Jake and Harley.
The family wishes to thank the physicians, nurses and staff at S.C. Oncology Associates and the Palmetto Richland Cancer Treatment Center as well as Dr. Stephen H. Metropol for their kind and compassionate care.

PORTAL, André
CANADYS - André Portal, 49, died Thursday, September 5, 2002.
The funeral will be on Monday, September 16, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Walterboro Christian Center, Walterboro. Burial will be in Westview Memorial Gardens, Ruffin.
Minister Portal was born in Bronx, New York, a son of the late Aurelio Portal and Vivian Johnson. He was educated in the public schools in New York and Saint Emma's Military Academy in Virginia. He was employed with S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation. He was a member and Minister of Music at Walterboro Christian Center.
Survivors are, his wife, Joyce; a son, André Joshua and a nephew, Sean (whom he raised) all of the home; two brothers, Gregory and Aurelio Portal of N.Y.; father-in-law, Richard Walker of N.Y.; mother-in-law, Shirley Breddell of Walterboro; six aunts and four uncles.
