William R. McMurtrey Jr.
Retired construction worker

PENDLETON - William Raymond McMurtrey Jr., 73, of 6530 Liberty Highway, died Nov. 5, 2002, at the Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Anderson, he was a retired construction worker and a member of Lebanon Baptist Church of Anderson. He was the son of the late William Raymond McMurtrey Sr. and the late Ola Smith McMurtrey.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Hope McMurtrey of the home; a son, Marion Raymond McMurtrey of Columbia; a sister, Betty Lee McMurtrey of Greenville; two stepdaughters, Donna Ivey and Margaret West both of Union; a stepson, Ronnie Ivey of Union; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. this afternoon at Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jason Webb. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621. The Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, had charge of the arrangements.

Martha J. Strom
Community leader

Martha Louise Jones Strom, 85, wife of Samuel T. Strom of 117 Lakeside Drive, died at her home Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at 8:30 p. m. Mrs. Strom was born in Tempe, GA. on October 1, 1917, a daughter of the late Daniel Lynn Braxton Jones and Mattilu White Jones.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union since 1946 where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Chancel Choir and was former W. M. U. Director and former Union County Baptist Association W. M. U.. Director.

She was past president of the Union County Girl Scout Council, past president of Union Music Club and State Federation Officer, Union County Beautification Chairman, March of Dimes Chairman, past president of the Third Monday Book Club, past Regent of Fairforest D. A. R., former member of the Junior Charity League, Salvation Army Board, Colonial Dames, 17th Century, Anthony Hampton Chapter of Spartanburg.

She served on the Friends of the Library Board and was a member of the Union Lioness Club. Mrs. Strom was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women (now Valdosta State University) and did graduate studies at Duke University and the University of South Carolina. She taught in the public schools of Georgia and South Carolina.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn Strom Collins and her husband, Andrew, of St. Paul, Minn. and Beth Strom of Lexington, Ky; a son and daughter-in-law, Thad Strom and his wife, Sandra, of Union; a sister, Elizabeth J. Lashley of Young Harris, Ga.; a brother, Wiley A. Jones of Lafayette, Ind. and five grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Collins of St. Paul, Minn.; Andrew Strom Collins of Rock Island, Ill. Tray Strom and Trevor Strom, both of Union and Claire Elizabeth Paige Strom of Lexington, Ky.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Friday at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clay Howerton. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Drew Collins, Trey Strom, Trevor Strom, Tommy Lashley, Joe Lashley and Lynn Jones.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 2:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the Sam Cain Sunday School Class, Bobby Brown, Keith Davis, Ernest Richardson, Earl Byran, Harold Kirby, J. C. Bryan, Doug Lawing, Gene Logan, W. C. Bennett, Felder Meador, Maurice Gregory, Charley Hughes, Jack Wilburn, and Bob Watts.

Members of the Bethany School School Class are asked to sit in a group. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1 until 2:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 352, Newberry, S.C., 29108-0352 or to the First Baptist Church for the Martha J. Strom Memorial Fund, 405 E. Main St., Union, S.C. 29379.

The family is at the home, 117 Lakeside Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mamie L. Browning
Retired sewing machine operator

Mamie L. Browning, 69, of 5503 Highway 49, Enoree, died Wednesday, Nov, 5, 2003, at B. J. Workman Hospital in Woodruff. Born in Laurens County, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Ella Bell Downs Cheeks.

Mrs. Browning was a member of New Hope A.M.E. Zion Church and was a retired sewing machine operator. Surviving are her husband, Walter Mack Browning of the home; a son, Ronald Lee Browning of Rock Hill, a daughter, Valeree Maxine Browning of Spartanburg; two sisters, Ozzie Bell Harris of Laurens and Mary Phelps of Harrisburg, Pa.; nine brothers, Fred Cheeks and Willie Almon Harris of Gray Court, John Arthur and Harold Kenneth Harris of Laurens, James Phelps and Bennie Phelps of Greenville, Nathaniel Phelps of Detroit, Mich., and Johnny and Raymond Phelps of Greenville.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday at New Hope A.M.E. Zion Church in Cross Keys. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Russell Jeter
World War II veteran

Russell Jeter, 91, of 122 Cherokee Avenue, Union, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Union County, he was the husband of the late Anne Bolton Jeter and the son of the late Dr. R. Russell and Agnes Coleman Jeter. Russell, known to many as (Bud,) graduated from the Citadel in 1933.

He was a business leader in Union prior to World War II. He served as an officer of artillery in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return he owned and operated an automobile dealership with William Coleman, his cousin. He later became interested in banking and eventually became vice president of the First National Bank in Union.

Mr. Jeter was a civic leader in Union for many years. His service to his community was something he believed strongly about. He was president of the Union County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Union County School Board. He was an active member of the Union Rotary Club and Grace United Methodist Church.

Mr. Jeter was also active in farming and was involved in many agricultural organizations. Mr. Jeter was instrumental in bringing the University of South Carolina to Union and was recognized as a founder of the Union Campus. He was an avid sports fan. Mr. Jeter never missed a Union Yellow Jacket football game and attended all the University of South Carolina Gamecocks home games when he was not at a Citadel game.

Surviving are three sons, Russell L. Jeter of Beaufort, Robert C. Jeter of Isle of Palms and William B. Jeter of Union. Another son, John R. Jeter predeceased his father. His oldest sister, Agnes M. Jeter still resides in Union and lives in the family home place. Mr. Jeter has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Jeter Family Cemetery in Santuc immediately following the church service. Active pallbearers will be Clarence A. Jeter III, Alexander Scott Fant Jr., Norris R. Fowler Jr., David P. Berry, Louis M. Jordan, Halcott P. Green and Charles R. Jeter.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 tonight at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jeter Cemetery Fund, c/o Mrs. Jill Jeter, 115 Park Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is serving the Jeter family.

William A. Lamb
World War II veteran

William Arthur (Bill) Lamb, 84, of 889 Hawkins Road, Union, husband of Mildred Smith Lamb, died at his home Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at 8:15 p.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Lamb was born in Union on June 19, 1919, a son of the late William Arthur Lamb Sr. and Iris Iola Willard Lamb. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.

Mr. Lamb was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army as a rifle instructor and was former owner of Monarch Cafe. He was a Mason and Shriner and was retired from Milliken & Co. as a truck driver. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kimberly Lankford of Union, two grandchildren, Toney Lamb of Gaffney, who was reared in the home, and Jaime Darity of Union; two great-grandchildren, Kyleigh DeRae Lamb and Christian William Darity, both of Union; and a sister, Ruby Kendrick of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and Mr. Charley Hughes. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Colon Duckett, Bruce Whisnant, Barry Smith, Ferrell Smith, Ronnie Jolly and Allen Jolly.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral home is serving the Lamb family.

Luvenia Littlejohn
Textile worker

Luvenia Littlejohn, 69, of 217 Elm St., Jonesville, died Tuesday, Nov, 4, 2003, at Mary Black Hospital. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late Millus and Allie Littlejohn Littlejohn. Ms. Littlejohn was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Jonesville and attended Union County schools and worked in textiles in Union County.

Surviving are three daughters, Gladys L. Sims of the home, Margie Littlejohn of Spartanburg and Harriet Littlejohn of Union; two sisters, Maggie Littlejohn of Dayton, Ohio and Juanita Littlejohn of Ohio; six brothers, Thad and Charles Littlejohn of the home, Abraham Littlejohn of Trortwood, Ohio, Marion Littlejohn of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Jesse and Leroy Littlejohn of Bronx, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jonesville. Burial will be in the Jerusalem Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 217 Elm St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd J. Carter
Retired from Milliken & Co.

Floyd Joseph Carter, 85, husband of Helen Ruth Edwards Carter of 138 Fant St., died Nov. 7, 2002 at 9:01 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Carter was born in Williams on Oct. 9, 1917, a son of the late Heber and Cora Wright Carter. He was a Methodist, a member of the Sportsman Hunting Club and the Wal-Mart Walkers and a member of C.C.C. Camp of Camp Croft. Mr. Carter was retired from Milliken and Co., Excelsior Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Joan Garner, Sonja Hicks and Annette Turner all of Union; two sons, Floyd W. Carter and Dennis K. Carter both of Union; two sisters, Pearl Smyly of Ruffin and Mary Shadrick of Smoaks; a brother, Ned P. Carter of Williams and a special little boy reared in the home, Steven Wallen; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Carter was predeceased by a son, Floyd Carter; a grandson, Scottie Hicks; two brothers, Grover Carter and Donald Carter; and a sister, Doris Carter.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Don Alexander and Rev. James Price. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, 138 Fant St., Union.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Bethel United Methodist Church, 1705 Lockhart Highway, Union, or to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 432 B, North Duncan By-Pass, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Nancy C. Gore
Baptist

SHARON - Nancy Cole Gore, 93, of 4736 Cabal Road, Sharon, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Chester County Nursing Center. Born in Chester County on Oct. 12, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Issac Cole and Mary Alice Thompson Cole. She was a member of Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church, AP&B Society, and attended the public schools of Chester County. Mrs. Gore was the widow of Walter Gore.

Surviving are a son, Carnell (Candy) Gore of Sharon; a daughter, Dorethea G. Huart of New York; three grandchildren whom she reared, Diane Styles, Nancy Williams and Johnny Hersey; five sisters, Ardie Cole and Elwillie (Robert) Lindsay of Sharon, Jolean Reid of Gastonia, N.C.; Emma Ruth (Frank) MCree of Fairmont, N.C.; and Gabrella Thompson of Greenville; nine other grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon with the Rev. Raymond T. Davis officiating, and Rev. James Owens delivering the Eulogy. Burial will be in Gore's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed today from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at noon on Saturday. King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, has charge of arrangements.
