HYERS, Carlotta
Carlotta Johnson Hyers the widow of Samuel Kent Hyers, died on November 5, 2002, in Charleston, S.C. The funeral will be on Saturday, November 9, 2002, at 2 p.m., in Old Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, S.C. 29407. Burial, directed by MCALISTER-SMITH, will be in Bethany cemetery in Charleston.
Mrs. Hyers was the daughter of John Archibald Johnson and Emma-Elizabeth Chinnis Johnson. She studied under Mrs. Fannie B. Henderson, Mrs. Irene Dawson Shippey, and Miss Elizabeth Grimball.
She was a member of Old Saint Andrews Episcopal Church. She was also a charter member and Past President of West Ashley Business and Professional Women; Past President of the Railroad Auxiliary of Conductors and Trainmen; past President of the Pilot Club of Charleston; past Matron and Secretary Emeritus of Charleston Chapter No. 56, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Hyers was a member of the Charleston Symphony League, the South Carolina Historical Society, and the Metropolitan Opera Association.
Survivors are her son, Kemper Kent Hyers, his wife, Courtney George Hyers, of Richmond, Virginia, her grandsons, Kemper Kent Johnson Hyers, William Martin Borden Hyers, and his wife, Andrea Gentl Hyers, and Samuel Thomas Campbell Hyers, all of New York City, and two great-grandchildren, Tallula Lucerne Gentl Hyers and Sam Elias Hyers.
There will be visitation at the McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 150 Wentworth Street, Charleston, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with Order of the Eastern Star Memorial Service beginning at 5:30 p.m., on Friday, November 8, 2002. Flowers are welcome or gifts may be made to Old Saint Andrews Church or the Order of the Eastern Star.

CARMICHAEL, Linda
Mrs. Linda Watkins Harlan Carmichael passed away peacefully on the morning of November 6, 2002 after a long and courageous struggle with illness. Born to Frances and Henry Watkins, she was raised in Charleston, SC, attended Ashley Hall and Mary Baldwin College, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She married William Harlan, Jr., with whom she had three children, Elizabeth Harlan Crowe, William Robert Harlan, III, and Christopher Hunt Harlan. Linda is also survived by her devoted husband of 6 years, Martin Carmichael like Linda, a UNC graduate and his four children, who loved Linda deeply.
Linda is known for her work with the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties, where she served as Executive Secretary for many years. Her cheerfulness, warmth, and flashes of wit will long be remembered at Hill House. During her tenure there, she earned a Masters in Counseling at North Carolina Central University. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and was active in the Town & Country Garden Club and the Sustainers Book Club. Linda and Martin wish to thank them and all of the friends who brought dinners and otherwise helped throughout her long illness.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 8 in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Linda will be laid to rest Saturday November 9 in Easley, S.C., next to her beloved mother, father, and maternal grandparents. A remembrance of Linda will be placed in the Carmichael family’s plot, Campo Santo, in the old Chapel Hill cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, 500 Morris Avenue, Springfield, NJ 07081 or to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. HALL-WYNNE is serving the Carmichael family.
Linda is now at peace in Heaven.

BOYETTE, Kathleen
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Boyette are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL Saturday morning, November 9, 2002 at eleven o’clock. Burial will be private. Friends may call at Stuhr’s Greenridge Road Chapel from ten o’clock until time of service.

WALSH, James Ottis
Entered into eternal rest on Thursday morning November 7, 2002, James Ottis Walsh, widower of Thelma Hill Walsh. Residence, North Charleston, South Carolina. The relatives and friends of James Ottis Walsh are invited to attend his funeral services in J. HENRY STUHR, INC, GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPELSunday afternoon, November 10, 2002, at three o’clock. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. Friends may call at Stuhr’s Greenridge Road Chapel Saturday afternoon, November 9, 2002, between five and seven o’clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holmes Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund, 4602 Durant Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
Mr. Walsh, 87, was born on November 16, 1914, a son of the late Charlie Shuford and Lula Craft Walsh. Mr. Walsh was a member of Holmes Avenue Baptist Church. He was a Veteran serving in the United States Army and was a retired foreman with Airco Alloys.
Surviving are his daughter, Janice C. W. Boles of North Charleston, SC; a brother, Edgar Walsh of Long Beach, CA; two sisters, Ruth McSweeney of Charleston, SC and Lilly Scott of Great Falls, SC. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kelly Gette, Lisa Deleon and Nolan Boles and five great-grandchildren, Golden Deleon, Jason Deleon, DeLinda Deleon, Sarah Deleon and Nolan Ross Boles.

WADE, Bobby
Bobby Edward Wade, 44, of Goose Creek, S.C., died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at a Charleston hospital.
Graveside services will be held at Summerville cemetery, Saturday, November 9, 2002, at 2 o'clock.
Mr. Wade was born October 1, 1958, in Charleston, S.C., a son of Kenneth Edward Wade and Dorothy Still Wade. He was a United States Navy Veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Dorothy Waterman and Bruce Waterman of Cottageville, S.C.; one son, Dustin Edward Wade of Goose Creek, S.C.; one brother, James Dean Waterman of Michigan; one sister, Theresa Lynn Waterman of Cottageville, S.C.; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

GIBBONS, Lorena
ALCOLU - Lorena M. Gibbons, 94 year old widow of Reuben Gibbons, died on November 6, 2002 at Tuomey Medical Center in Sumter after a short illness.
Born on August 20, 1908, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Allie Morris and Luther McElveen. "Rena" was a homemaker, a wonderful cook and had a open home where everyone was welcome. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Turbeville, where she served for many years in the church nursery.
Surviving is one son, Cecil T. "Sonny" McElveen of Sumter and a grandson; Dr. Cecil T. "Ty" McElveen, Jr., of Ridgeland, SC. She was a special mother for 47 years to Larry Elvin Gibbons of Turbeville, Bobby Jean Strange of Charleston, Myrna Griggs of Lynchburg, Lois Ann Hardy of Alcolu, Elvera McCue of Hilton, VA and Denny Gibbons of Columbia. he is survived by one sister, Theo Justice of Sumter and a brother, Ellie B. McElveen of Greenville. Fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and three sisters.
Services will be held at 3:30 PM Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Sonny Lee and Rev. Bert Petty, officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Friday at FLOYD FUNERAL HOME in Olanta and at other times at the home of her daughter, Lois Ann Hardy, 3150 Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 1020 Morris Street, Turbeville, SC 29162 or the charity of one's choice.

BROWER, Ida
Ida Kodama Hill Brower, 93, of Hanahan, SC, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday afternoon, November 10, 2002, in the Smyrna Methodist Church. Interment will be private. Arrangements by DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Ida K. Brower Fund, c/o H. Eugene Kodama, 728 Bluff Lane, Summerville, SC 29483, or to the Smyrna Methodist Church.
Mrs. Kodama was born April 12, 1909 in Texas, a daughter of Tai Kodama and Hisa Aiona Kodama. She was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church and the State Flea Market Assoc. She was a graduate of Berggman Private School, Charleston, SC.
Surviving are, a brother, Jack Kodama of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Betty W. Kodama of Bonneau; two nieces, Laura Ann Shroyer of Moncks Corner and Kathy Jo Shealy of Charleston; two nephews, Henry "Gene" Kodama of Summerville and William "Billy" Kodama of Moncks Corner.

MADDEN, Shelley
The relatives and friends of Mr. & Mrs. Patrick A. Madden of Summerville, SC, are invited to attend a memorial service for the latter, 10 a.m., this Friday morning in the Ridge Baptist Church, Summerville. Interment will be private. Directed by DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER.

The relatives and friends of Mrs. Rosa Lee Quarles, those of her son, Ulysses Quarles (Ethel), sister, Mrs. Martha Mizell of NY, brother, Durant McDonald, brothers-in-law, Deacon Robert Quarles and Henry Booker; sisters-in-law, Leola Quarles, Annie Mae, Bessie, Gertrude, Rosemary, Pearl, Dorothy Quarles, and Mattie McDonald, her grandchildren: Alanda, Marcus and Aaron Quarles; great-grands: Tyrek, Rosean Howard, God son Tony Gardner, God daughter, Whitney Quarles and all other relatives and friends are invited to attend her Home Going Services, Saturday, November 9, 2002, 1 PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Ten Mile, Rev. George W. Fields, Pastor. Interment, Church yard. Mrs. Quarles will lie in state at the North Area Funeral Home Chapel this evening from 6 to 8 PM where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 PM. NORTH AREA FUNERAL HOME entrusted with services. THAMES, Elsie
Elsie Williams Thames, 80, of Goose Creek, widow of Hugh Thomas Thames, died Monday evening at her residence.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 1 o'clock in Tall Pines Baptist Church, 645 Treeland Drive, Ladson. Burial will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Charleston.
Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville, from 6 until 8 o'clock this evening.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: Meals on Wheels, PO Box 592, Summerville, SC 29484.
Mrs. Thames was born March 19, 1922 in Covington County, Alabama, a daughter of the late Amer Jerome Williams and Gladys Williams. She attended schools in Alabama. She retired as a Personnel Manager with Woolworth. She was a member of Tall Pines Baptist Church.
Surviving are: 2 daughters, Eleanor Jean Feagin of Ladson and Carolyn Joan Sumner of San Antonio, TX; 1 son, Annuit Bud Thames of Goose Creek; 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Master Jai'Se DannARO Govan, 7 months infant son of Shermanlesa Govan and James Ferguson died on Tuesday, November 5, 2002. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, November 8, 2002 at the Ling Funeral Home Chapel, St. George, SC with Dr. John H. Elliott, officiating. Burial will be in the Shady Grove cemetery, St. George, SC, directed by LING FUNERAL HOME of St. George.
Jai'Se was born April 22, 2002 in Columbia, SC. He is survived by numerous family members.
