ACKERMAN, DeWitt
GEORGETOWN - DeWitt Watson Ackerman, 65, died Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2002, at the North Hampton Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Andrews Memorial cemetery, directed by GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MCKENZIE FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Ackerman was born February 14, 1937, in Williamsburg County, a son of the E. Watson Ackerman and Lucille Martin Ackerman. He was educated in the Williamsburg School System, a previous crane operator and later service in the utility department with Georgetown Steel Corp. He was a member of the North Hampton Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Robert A. Ackerman.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara S. Ackerman of Georgetown; one daughter, Dee Powell of North Summerton; two brothers, E.B. Ackerman of Andrews; and Joe H. Ackerman of Gastonia, N.C.; three sisters, Argerine A. Blakely of Georgetown; Delloris A. Hill of Columbia; and Diane A. Mills of Kings Mt., NC; one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday evening, at his residence, located at 114 Quincy Place, Georgetown, S.C.

FERDON, Etta
Etta N. Ferdon, age 88, of Moncks Corner, passed away December 11, 2002, at home.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Carolina Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Friday, December 13, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home - 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston.
Born in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Mackey and Lattie Nesmith. Ms. Ferdon was a member of the Remount Baptist Church. Ms. Ferdon was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.
Survivors include her daughter, Naomi F. Moody of Cummings, GA, sons, Gery W. Ferdon, of Lafayette, IN, and Kenneth L. Ferdon of Moncks Corner. Also included are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sister, Eloise White of Charleston, S.C., Omega Brown of Georgetown, S.C., Emmie Plexico of High Point, NC. Predeceased by her husband, William S. Ferdon and a son, Dwight E. Ferdon.

SANDERS, William
The relatives and friends of Mr. William (Junior) Sanders, those of his daughter, Veola Sanders of Harlem, N.Y., grandchildren, Sonya, Shemiah, Shawnequah and Tiffany, brothers, Richard Sanders (Sandra) o Coca, Florida, Luther Sanders (Winifred) of New York City, and Augustus (Pat) of Charleston, S.C., ten great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins are invited to attend his memorial services on Saturday, December 14, 2002, 12 noon at FIELDING HOME FOR FUNERALS, 122 Logan Street, 722-3348 or 1-800-290-5954.

MOYER, Jessica
Entered into eternal rest on December 9, 2002, Jessica Nicole Moyer, wife of Bryan Capers Moyer. Residence, Cottageville, S.C. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Moyer are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Friday afternoon, December 13, 2002, at 2:30 o'clock. Interment, Cottageville cemetery. Mrs. Moyer was born in Charleston, S.C., November 21, 1979, the daughter of Larry Konarski and Lora Reynolds Scott.
Surviving are her husband of Cottageville, S.C.; one son, Bryan Capers Moyer, Jr., of Cottageville, S.C.; her father, Larry Konarski of North Charleston, S.C.; paternal grandmother, Phyllis Galinis of Putman, CT; her mother, Lora Reynolds Scott and step-father, Charles Scott of Frederick, MD; two brothers, Jason Konarski of Chapin, S.C., and Stephen Konarski of Prosperity, S.C.; one sister, Aimee Konarski of Frederick, MD. Mrs. Moyer was preceded in death by a son, Seth Moyer.

LAFERTE, Joseph
Joseph Paul Laferte, 88, of North Charleston, died on December 9, 2002, at a local hospital. Born in Biddeford, Maine, on September 20, 1914, he was the son of Fancois Laferte and Leda Gagne Laferte. Mr. Laferte played a semi-pro baseball with the Biddeford Yankees before joining the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He worked as an electronics mechanic in Shop 67 at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and then with NAVALEX and retired in 1979. For many years he was active in the North Charleston Exchange Club and was a member of Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, North Charleston, for 41 years but was most recently a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goose Creek, S.C. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary; two daughters, Anne Pillow and her husband Pete of Spartanburg, S.C., and June Taylor and her husband Allen of Seminole, Fla.; a son, Joseph P. Laferte, Jr., and his wife Phyllis of Summerville, S.C.; six grandsons, Bill, Ben and James Pillow, Evan Taylor, Nicholas and Michael Laferte. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Church, 510 St. James Ave., Goose Creek, S.C. Interment will follow at Holy Cross cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston, S.C. 29412. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Building Fund, 510 St. James Ave., Goose Creek, S.C. 29445. The Laferte family is being served by MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 100 S. Goose Creek Blvd. (Hwy. 52), Goose Creek, S.C.

FLYNN, Helen Ferer
Entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, Helen Ferer Flynn, widow of Lawrence E. Flynn, Sr. of Isle of Palms, SC. The relatives and friends of Mrs. Helen F. Flynn are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, December 14, 2002 in Stella Maris Catholic Church at 1:00 o’clock. Mrs. Flynn was born in Lock Haven, PA, daughter of Henry A. and Caroline Squires Ferer. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Lock Haven University, formerly Lock Haven State Teacher’s College and was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church since 1967 and a member of the Tuesday Club.
Surviving are her five sons, Lawrence E. Flynn, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC, James A. Flynn of Columbia, SC, Michael A. Flynn of Lake St. Louis, MO, William F. Flynn of Annandale, VA, R. Patrick Flynn of Charleston, SC; three daughters, Cynthia C. Flynn of Chapin, SC, Anne F. Briley of Mount Pleasant, SC, Kathleen F. Brown of Columbia, SC, fourteen grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.

HILL, Brian Michael

Mrs. Parnell was born in Macon, Georgia, where she was delivered by her great grandfather, Dr. Thomas. She was the daughter of Arthur G. Johnston and Annie Rogers Johnston Pappas. She was the former owner/operator of Arrow Dry Cleaners. She was a member of Northbridge Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of Charleston, SC; two daughters: Betty Ann Burbage Pancoski and Linda Kay Parnell both of Charleston, SC; one son: Robert William Parnell, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Charleston, SC; one sister: Elaine J. Brady of Charleston, SC; one brother: A. Roger Johnston of Arlington, VA; 7 grandchildren: Robin E. Renken, Roxanne R. Blakely, Ralph E. Renken, Jr., Ryan Ashley Parnell, Michael Meise, Elizabeth Meise and Michael Floyd; 7 great-grandchildren: Betsy Brabham, Blair Blakely, Brittany Blakely, Michelle Renken, Rebecca Renken, Emily Renken and Justin Meise; one great great granddaughter, Krissa Renken; one nephew: Charles M. Brady, Jr.; one niece: Barbara Ann Johnston. She was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn J. McLemore, and a daughter, Nadine Parnell Ricketts.

GROOMS, Rita
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Rita J. Grooms, 85, passed away Monday, December 2, 2002. She was born on July 3, 1917, to the late Gillie Scott Jones in Charleston where she lived most of all her life. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church and Centerville Ladies Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack P. Grooms. She is survived by two sons, Paul M. Grooms and his wife Gail, and Jack G. Grooms and his wife, Faye; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 10 a.m., with burial following in Bethany cemetery. Friends may sign the guest register for Mrs. Grooms at the memorial service at St. Johns Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Johns Episcopal Church, 460 Arlington Drive, Charleston, S.C. 29414.

BENNETT, Mildred
Mildred Moore Bennett, 86, of North Charleston, a retired typist/secretary with the US Government, died Monday, December 2, 2002 at a local hospital.
Mrs. Bennett born in Lewis County, West Virginia, was the daughter of the late Ernest Allen and Lorena Linger Moore.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bennett was Methodist and active with Eastern Star.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
