Florence Edmondson

Florence Edmondson, 98, a resident of The Seabrook, died Friday, July 26, at Fraser Health Center.

Mrs. Edmondson was born Oct. 30, 1903, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Mathilda C. LaMarsche and Frederick E. Boehmcke.

She graduated from La Selle finishing school in Massachusetts in 1923. During World War II she worked for the Navy, and laterfor the Nassau County Health Department. Upon her marriage to Harry S. Edmondson, she moved to Pleasantville, N.Y.

After retirement she moved to Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y., and was the longest-serving volunteer for the Southside Hospital. She also was the first treasurer of the League of Women Voters on Long Island.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Sara Simes and Jim and Bobsy Simes; grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, and sister, Marion Boehmcke.

A memorial party will be held for Mrs. Edmondson's friends at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Seabrook.

The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Helen S. Moore

Helen Strotman Moore, 81, of Hilton Head Island died Wednesday, July 24, at the Preston Health Center.

She was born Aug. 28, 1920, in New York City, daughter of the late Fredrick Strotman and the late Katherine Igoc.

She moved from her home in Centerport, Long Island, N.Y., to Hilton Head Island in 1992 after the death of her husband, Hartwell S. Moore.

Mrs. Moore graduated from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 and served in the Army as a first lieutenant and neuropsychiatry nurse, from 1945 until 1948. She was awarded the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

With her husband, she enjoyed sailing, raising and training award-winning field trail cocker spaniels, hunting, fishing, gardening and golf.

She is survived by eight nephews, Hartwell, Robert and Warren Moore, James, John, Robert and Drew Winston, and Arthur Binley; a niece, Mrs. Lee Golub; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Binley Sr., and their families. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Louise Winston.

The family will hold private services. Mrs. Moore will be inurned in the St. Francis By the Sea Catholic Church Columbarium on Hilton Head.

Leonard B. Unsicker

BLUFFTON -- Leonard B. "Corky" Unsicker, 63, of Bluffton died Thursday, July 25, at his home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1938, in Peoria, Ill., son of the late Virginia May Unsicker and Leonard A. Unsicker.

He moved to the area in the early 1980s from Illinois.

He was a Navy veteran. He attended Bradley University and retired as owner of Unsicker Insurance Agency in Tremont, Ill.

He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge in Tremont, and was a member of the Lions Club and American Legion. He was a part-time dispatcher for LowCountry Adventures.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Richardson Unsicker; four daughters, Julie Ann Mathis of Tremont, Marijo Lindstrom of Minneapolis, Leslie Lyn Prince of St. Charles, Mo., and Wanda Lee Hayes of Virdon, Ill.; a stepson, Thomas P. Caruso of Elgin; a sister, MaryJane Baer of Washington, Ill.; and 15 grandchildren.

Private services will be held out of state.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Robert E. Stevens Jr.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Robert E. Stevens, Jr., US Marine Corps, Ret, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Rutland, Vermont.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 PM. at Copeland Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will be Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Beaufort National Cemetery

Mr. Stevens was born October 3, 1922, in Bellow Falls, Vermont, a son of Robert E. Stevens and Alvina Knight Stevens. He retired in 1968 from the Marine Corps after 26 years of service. He served during World War II, Korea and Viet Nam.

After his retirement, he formerly owned Stevens Motorcycle Center in Beaufort and was later the owner of Stevens Newspaper Distributors.

He was a member of the Non Commissioned Officers Association, the Fleet Reserve and was a member of the Sons and Daughters of the Founders of Newberry, Massachusetts.

He was predeceased by a son, Malcolm Stevens, in 1997.

Surviving are: his wife, Barbara Drake Stevens of Frogmore; one son, John Stevens of Lobeco; four sisters, Lillian Stevens of Burlington, VT, Midge Wyman of Proctorsville, VT, Helen Kennett of Weathersfield, VT, and Marion Kendall of Chester, VT; one brother, Kenneth Stevens of Farmville, NC; 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Copeland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Hoppenrath Sr.

Raymond Earl Hoppenrath Sr., 80, of Hilton Head Island died Sunday, July 14, at Life Care Center of Hilton Head Island.

He was born in Brookfield, Ill., son of the late William C. and Carrie Degner Hoppenrath.

He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1998 from Washington, Ill.

Mr. Hoppenrath received a mechanical engineering degree from Iowa State University and was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity.

He served in the Navy during World War II as a naval aviator and instrument flight instructor. He worked for many years in the construction equipment industry in sales and engineering.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Simmons Hoppenrath; three sons, Raymond E. Hoppenrath Jr. of Hagerstown, Md., James W. Hoppenrath of Flushing, Mich., and William C. Hoppenrath of Peoria, Ill.; and a brother, William M. Hoppenrath of Brookfield, Ill.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew By-the-Sea United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David DuBois officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 or St. Andrew-By-the-Sea Building Fund, 20 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.

Mary J. Buffum

Mary Jane Buffum, 97, of Hilton Head Island, died Sunday, July 14, at the Preston Health Center at The Cypress.

Mrs. Buffum was born Dec. 27, 1904, in Pendleton, Ore., daughter of Lavara and the Rev. James Cornelison.

She grew up in Walla Walla, Wash., and graduated from Whitman College in 1926.

She married Albert C. Buffum on Oct. 29, 1929, and they moved to Yokohama, Japan, in 1932. She studied oriental cultures and religions and earned teaching diplomas in the Ikebana and Bonkei.

They returned to the United States in 1940 and lived in Winchester, Mass., before moving to Elkhart, Ind., where she lived for 40 years. She served as a province secretary in the Delta Gamma Sorority and was a presented with a 75-year member award by the Hilton Head Delta Gamma chapter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years in 1979. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Thomas of Hilton Head Island and Jeanne Collins of Mishawaka, Ind.; a brother Purdy Cornelison of Walla Walla; four grandchildren, Kerrie Van Dalsum, David B. Thomas, Christy Schrock and Cathy Eikenberry; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Bruce Whitney

SAN ANTONIO -- Charles Bruce "Pops" Whitney, 88, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, San Antonio.

Memorial services will be Friday, August 9, 2002, at Carteret Street United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Mr. Whitney was born March 31, 1914, in Boston, a son of Annie Frances Belbin and Granville O. Whitney. He was a WWII Veteran of the USMC 1st Division and worked 20 years for the U.S. Postal Service. He spent most of his life in Beaufort.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Olive Whitney; and a son Charles Bruce Whitney Jr.

Survivors include three sons, Luther A. Whitney of San Antonio, Brian F. Whitney of Eureka, Mo., and Donald S. Whitney of Washington; a brother, John F. Whitney of Quincey, Mass.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

John Richard Cappelmann Sr.

John Richard Cappelmann Sr., 53, of Beaufort, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church, Barnwell.

Mr. Cappelmann was born May 13, 1949, in Beaufort, a son of Alma Steinmeyer Cappelmann and Claude M. Cappelmann. He received a master's degree in Agricultural Engineering from Clemson University. He was an instructor of Building Construction Technology at the Technical College of the Lowcountry where he was Teacher of the Year in 2000 and where he organized the Student Charter of the National Homebuilder's Association. He was an Eagle Scout and was a recipient of the Boys Scout God & Country Award. He was a member of Community Bible Church. He was a member of the United States Navy, being fluent in the Russian language, and served four years, some at sea, off the coast of hostile countries in the Asian/Pacific region.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Barnard Cappelmann; his mother, of Beaufort; two sons, John R. Cappelmann, Jr. and Tyler Cappelmann of Beaufort; and six brothers, Daniel U. Harrell Jr., Douglas A. Cappelmann, William E. "Biff" Cappelmann, and Glenn Hutson Cappelmann, of Beaufort; Claude Mitchell Cappelmann Jr. of Columbia, and Christopher "Devvy" Cappelmann of Hilton Head Island.
