Amidst early morning stillness our beloved matriarch, Clara Mae Melton Bivens, traded this earthly journey for a life of eternal rest—a place where she had anticipated dwelling; a place about which she had often spoken, and a place where she had no fear of transitioning.

Clara Mae Melton Bivens departed this life on Friday, August 22, 2014 in Charlotte, NC. A native of Chesterfield, SC, she was born on March 5, 1919 to the late William (Bill) and Sally Frances Streater Melton. She was wedded to John William Bivens.

Clara was an active and faithful member of New Zion. She served in leadership and member capacity over the years on the Usher, Missionary, Hymn Choir and Pastor’s Aide ministries, until her health no longer permitted.

Clara received her education in the public schools of Chesterfield County and retired from Armour Foods. Her warm and witty personality garnered her many friends of all ages and backgrounds. Clara was happiest spending time with her extended family, gardening, sewing, quilting, and cross-stitching birth announcements for her grandchildren. She was most pleased with her artwork that she started in her eighties. Most often you would find her reading her Bible and no one escaped a visit with her without her sharing her wisdom to “keep God first—and don’t forget to pray.” As a member of the Grand Court Order of Calanthe, she joined others in exhibiting charity and support within the community.

Mrs. Bivens was preceded in death by her husband, John William Bivens, 3 brothers, Mander Melton, Leon Melton, Jesse Melton, 3 sisters Thelma Smith, Flora Tillman, Myrtle Lewis, one granddaughter, Joyce Ann Crowder and one great grandson Danny Barrino.
