PAGELAND - Mrs. Katherine James Horne, age 77, died Friday, April 25, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Pageland, SC.

Visitation will be 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Horne was born May 23, 1936, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late Henry Phillip and Donar McLain James. She was a 1955 graduate of Chesterfield High School, and a former employee of SLS. Katherine enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, fishing, and taking care of her family. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jonas W. “Pete” Horne; 2 brothers, Julian and William James; and by 6 sisters, Madge King, Clara Wallace, Leatha Freeman, Margaret Moore, Jennie Hancock, and Nellie James.

Survivors include 2 Sons: J.W. Horne and Scotty (Carla) Horne of Pageland, SC; 2 Daughters: Doris (Lane) Evans and Carolyn (Charlie) Thomas of Pageland, SC; 9 Grandchildren; 1 Brother: Jadie S. James of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Sister: Elizabeth J. Wallace of Chesterfield, SC

Also: Nieces and Nephews.

Dorothy Barrington Huff

SOCIETY HILL - Mrs. Dorothy Barrington Huff, age 50, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, in Branson, Mo.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC.

Interment followed in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Patrick, SC.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Huff was born October 5, 1963, in Bennettsville, SC, a daughter of the late Nelson and Dessie Brigman Barrington. She was a former convenience store cashier and a loving wife and mama. Dorothy enjoyed collecting nut crackers and cooking.

Survivors include Husband: Richard Earl Huff of the home; 1 Son: Chris Huff of the home; 1 Brother: Nelson (Vonda) Barrington of Society Hill, SC; and 1 Nephew: Nick Barrington of Society Hill, SC.

Richard Minor Laney

MT. CROGHAN - Mr. Richard Minor Laney, age 58, died Friday, April 18, 2014 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the High Point Baptist Church Cemetery, Pageland, SC.

Visitation was from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, Tuesday, prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Laney was born February 15, 1956 in Chesterfield County, SC a son of the late Minor and Susie Knight Laney. He was a former heavy equipment operator and logger. Richard loved cars, enjoyed NASCAR, Drag Racing, and was an avid Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan. He enjoyed fishing and watching Andy Griffith. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Pete, Titus, Clyde, William, and Edward Laney; and 3 sisters, Lessie Hargett, Katherine Outen, and Joann West.

Survivors include Wife: Linda Laney of Columbia, SC; 4 Sons: Ricky (Lydia) Laney of Killen, TX, Eddie (Crystal) Laney of Pageland, SC, Eric Laney of Rock Hill, SC, and Stuart Steen of Mt. Croghan, SC; 2 Daugthers: Tina Laney of West VA, and Lacey (Mike) Irvin of McBee, SC

10 Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Roy (Betty) Laney of Kershaw, SC and Bill Laney of Heath Springs, SC; and 3 Sisters: Louise Nichols, Frances Stevenson, and Carolyn Oliver all of Pageland, SC.

Perry Wallace DuMez

CHERAW - CSM Perry Wallace DuMez U.S. Army Retired, age 81, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014. He was born 27 July 1932, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the eldest son of Perry Wallace DuMez, Sr. and Viola Marguerite MacArthur DuMez. He had resided in Cheraw since 1998.

CSM DuMez served 21 years in the Army Infantry, with tours in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, earning both the Silver star and the Bronze star for valor. He was based mostly at Fort Jackson, and after his military service he owned and operated Perry Electric in Columbia, SC.

As he enjoyed hunting and fishing, he moved to Chesterfield County to pursue these and other interests, such as gardening, ballroom dancing, and animal husbandry. He was a devoted family man and considered this his life’s greatest responsibility.

He is survived by his wife, Vana Middleton DuMez, of the home and by his daughter, Cherie DuMez of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29212, or to a Charity of one’s choice.

William Eugene "Geno" Freeman

SOCIETY HILL - Mr. William Eugene "Geno" Freeman, age 70, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at his home.
A celebration of life service was held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation was from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the funeral home.
Mr. Freeman was born October 29, 1943 in Hartsville, SC a son of the late George Hollis and Sibbie Mae Ramsey Freeman. He was a former employee of Daniels Construction, and was a graphic art designer and painter. Mr. Freeman was a member of Society Hill Presbyterian Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran. Geno enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, fishing, wildlife, antique cars, chickens, animals, and especially his cats. In addition to his parents, Geno was preceded in death by 1 sister, Theo Tucker; 1 brother, Floyd Freeman; and by a son-in-law, Colbey Moore, Sr.
Survivors include companion: Brenda Gardner of the home; 1 Son: Brad (Katie Davis) Freeman of Augusta, GA; 3 Daughters: Shawn (John) Pryhoda of Charleston, SC, Lee Ellen (Matthew Mitchell) Moore of Augusta, GA, Erin (Salah, MD) Faour of Murfreesboro, TN; Grandchildren: John Jr., Kaylee, Colbey Jr., Gibson, Hannah, Elizabeth, Lewey, Hedi, Leann, Courtney, Ephraim, Emmanuel, Makaya; 5 Sisters: Kathy (Richard) Ingram of Darlington, SC, Sybil "Ludie" (Jimmy) Brown-Smith of Society Hill, SC, Susan Gainey of Patrick, SC, Francine (Eric Wallace) Freeman of Cheraw, SC, and Margaret; (Ray) Roscoe of Rockingham, NC; 3 Brothers: Don (Liz) Huggins of Florence, SC, Kenneth (Helen) Freeman of Patrick, SC, and Raymond; (Margaret) Freeman of Patrick, SC; Also: Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Barbara Hill Funderburk

PAGELAND - Mrs. Barbara Hill Funderburk, age 84, died Friday, April 18, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, April 21, 2014 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation is 1:00 – 2:00 PM, prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Funderburk was born April 24, 1929, in Camden, SC, a daughter of the late Luther Ellie and Leola Eva Marshall Hill. She was a graduate of Pageland High School and was a retired bank teller with First Citizens Bank. Mrs. Funderburk was a faithful member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church for many years, where she served as former pianist, organist, choir member, church clerk, and Sunday school teacher. Barbara enjoyed growing flowers, sewing, quilting, making crafts, and playing the piano. In addition to her parents, Barbara was also preceded in death by her husband, Archie L. Funderburk, her son-in-law, James B. “Pete” Mills, her brother, Don D. Hill, and by her sisters, Miriam H. Ammons and Carolyn H. Smith.

Survivors include 1 Son: Philip L. (Vonda) Funderburk of Hamptonville, NC; 1Daughter: Phylis F. Mills of Pageland, SC; Grandchildren: Jenna Mills (Travis) Johnson, Bevan (Lucille) Funderburk, and Jason (Jen) Funderburk.

Barbara Ann Adams McQueen

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Barbara Ann Adams McQueen, age 73, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 19, 2014, at David's Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Saturday, prior to the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Mrs. McQueen was born April 28, 1940 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Brad and Mary Lee Roscoe Adams. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and was a homemaker, wife, and mother. Mrs. McQueen was a member of David’s Grove Baptist Church. Barbara enjoyed cooking, gardening, shopping, and taking care of others. In addition to her parents, Barbara was also preceded in death by a brother, Bradley Adams and two sisters, Margie Raffaldt and Thalia Wilson.

Survivors include Husband: William B. “Bill” McQueen of the home; 3 Daughters: Laurie (Rev. John) Gulliksen of Hahira, GA, Susan (Henry) Heatley of Cross, SC, and Joyce McQueen of the home; 5 Grandchildren: Lauren (Kenny) Brady, Kelsey Gulliksen, Maggie Heatley, Katie Heatley, and Stephen Heatley; 1 Great Grandchild: Colton Brady; 3 Brothers: Donnie Adams of Morven, NC, Joel Adams of Chesterfield, SC, and Kenny Adams of Pageland, SC; 1 Sister: Brenda Grimm of Kannapolis, NC.

Ralph Allen Picolet

PAGELAND - Dr. Ralph Allen Picolet, 68, of Pageland, SC went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Dr. Picolet passed away of natural causes in Monroe, NC.

Ralph Allen Picolet was born on May 2, 1945 in Council Grove, Kansas to the late David and Ethel Iseli Picolet. He met Resa Picolet and they got married on September 4, 1973 in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Picolet received his Doctorate from Cleveland Chiropractic College, Kansas City, Missouri in 1974. Dr. Picolet and his wife Resa decided to move to Pageland where he opened his Chiropractic Office, Pageland Chiropractic in 1976. He enjoyed Volunteering to help serve in the community whether with the Church or school. He loved spending time with his friends and family and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, volleyball, motocross and anything involving handyman expertise.

Dr. Picolet was a Member of the Pageland Lions Club since 1976 where he held various positions including President. He served as the Chairman of the Pageland Planning Commission since 1980, served on the school board at South Pointe Christian School as well as served on the Deacon board and held various other positions at South Pointe Fellowship. Dr. Picolet was a Member of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association. He joined the Air Force in 1966 and served 7 years being stationed in Panama Canal, Charleston, SC and California.

Dr. Picolet is survived by his wife of 40 years, Resa Picolet of Pageland, SC, Sons, Justin (Kristal) Picolet of Owasso, OK and Joshua ( Jennifer) Picolet of Herndon, VA, Grandchildren, Logan and Kendall Picolet of Owasso, OK, Brothers, Davy (Mary) Picolet of Council Grove, KS, Charley ( Brenda) Picolet of Dwight, KS, and Dallas Picolet of Dwight, KS, Sister, Reta (Bill) Hooper of Council Grove, KS, Eight Nieces and Two Nephews and Numerous Great Grand Nieces and Nephews.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at South Pointe Fellowship. The burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland.

The family received friends from 6 – 8 PM on Monday, April 14, 2014 at South Pointe Fellowship.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to South Pointe Christian School, PO Box 188, Pageland, SC 29728.

Weldon 'Snookie' Tolson

PATRICK - Mr. Weldon “Snookie” Tolson, age 78, died Thursday, April 17, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Patrick Cemetery.

Visitation was 3:00 – 4:00 PM, Saturday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Tolson was born June 13, 1935 in Patrick, SC a son of the late James Roachel and Vera Chapman Tolson. He was a former truck driver and a retired supply clerk with Burlington Industries with 28 years of service. Snookie was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Patrick Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Snookie was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Katherine Hendrix Tolson; two brothers, William and Hildreth Tolson; and three sisters, Elizabeth McLain, Clara Huggins, and Sadie Jordan.

Survivors include 2 Brothers: Randell (Mabel) Tolson of Cheraw, SC and Jeter (Lydia) Tolson of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Sister: Margaret White of Bennettsville, SC; 4 Half-brothers: Raymond (Tina) Tolson of Greenwood, SC, Nolan Tolson of Donalds, SC, Odell Tolson of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Lowell (Vera) Tolson of Pendleton, SC; 1 Half-sister : Daphene (Ray) Wrenn of Abbeville, SC; Also Nieces and Nephews.

Rayvon C. Wallace

CHERAW - Rayvon C. Wallace, 65, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late Cecil and Ethel T. Wallace. He was a US Army Veteran serving a tour in Vietnam. Mr. Wallace was retired, he had work at Bi-Lo, Cheraw Hardware and ERA Realty (Hartsville). He was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by the Baptist Association on August 1, 2010. When his health declined he took great pride in being a minister and using his talent for the Lord in an important phone ministry. He enjoyed looking for Indian artifacts, canoeing down the Pee Dee River and researching the history of Cheraw. He was an avid University of South Carolina Gamecock fan. He liked to spend time landscaping and working in his yard. He was known for his wit and telling stories, putting a spin on true stories of himself and friends. He loved talking to people. He was a devout and loving husband and best friend.

Surviving is his wife, Margaret Coan Wallace of Cheraw, SC, a brother, Tommy Wallace of Cheraw, SC, several nieces and nephews. Ray was very close to Zachery T. Michael, whom he mentored.

Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a sister, Jeraline W. Boan.

The family received friends 1:00 PM, Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 12, 2014 in the funeral home chapel following the visitation.

CHERAW - Mrs. Dorothy Stafford Harpe, age 76, died Friday, April 11, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, April 14, 2014 at First Southern Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harpe was born September 6, 1937 in Cheraw, SC a daughter of the late Harris and Lola Rainwater Stafford. She was a homemaker and charter member of First Southern Methodist Church, where she served as Church Pianist for many years. Mrs. Harpe loved flowers, sports, especially football, music, and playing the piano. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was also preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Harpe; and 1 sister, Lola Malinda Stafford.

Survivors include 2 Sons: James Stephen (Clova Smith) Harpe, and Matthew C. Harpe both of Cheraw, SC; 1 Brother: Richard Harris (Margaret) Stafford of Cheraw, SC; 2 Sisters: Sylvia Stafford Polson, and Julia Stafford Davis both of Cheraw, SC.
