Bradshaw 'Lem' Funderburk

CHERAW — Bradshaw “Lem” Funderburk son of the late Bradshaw Funderburk and the late Vilela Funderburk was born March 29, 1924 in Chesterfield County, SC and entered into eternal rest on January 6, 2015 at Chesterfield General Hospital.

Bradshaw was a life long member of Goodman Creek Baptist Church, being converted at an early age remained faithful until moving north. He also attended the public schools of Chesterfield County.

After moving north he worked various jobs in Patterson, New Jersey which included brick mason and other construction jobs. He also lived in New York where he was a brick mason.

Lem moved back to South Carolina many years ago and rejoined Goodman Creek Baptist Church where he served on the Men’s Choir, Senior Choir, Trustee Board and a spokesman for Intercessory Prayer and the oldest man in the Men In Black Chorus where he received many awards.

Lem was preceded in death by six sisters and brothers: Luzette Levan, Leonard Funderburk, Peggy Funderburk, Evelyn Goeloe, Marion Funderburk, and Mildred Funderburk; and a daughter.

Those left to mourn his passing are four children: Sterling Funderburk of Hermitage, PA, Bradshaw Jr. of New York, Roberta Jennie Sanders of Ft. Hood, Texas and Vonceil Robinson of Hamlet, NC; one sister Margret Manning of Cheraw; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, cousins and friends. A special cousin, Wallace Funderburk and his adopted son; and a close friend James Bobby Morrison and a special nephew Paul Funderburk.

Robert Glenn Kimrey

CHERAW — Robert Glenn Kimrey, 92, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late Rev. Steven H. and Elizabeth McDowell Kimrey. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC where he was a Sunday School Teacher of the Men’s Bible Class for 15 years. He had served as a Gideon and Mason. He was a US Navy Veteran and a member of the American Legion Five Oaks Post 23 of Cheraw for 63 years. He served for 20 years on the Cheraw Town Council.

He is survived by his wife, Connie O’Neal Kimrey of Cheraw, SC, stepsons, Ralph O’Neal of Cheraw, SC, Ladd O’Neal of Hartsville, SC, six grandchildren, also, many nieces and nephews, and a special friend of the family Bonnie Rollins.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, his first wife Hazel Jones Kimrey, brothers, Leo Kimrey, Rufus “Jake” Kimrey, Rev. Steven Kimrey, sisters, Sally Lowery, Addy Butler, and Dorothy Kimrey.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, January 16, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A graveside service was held 1:00 PM Saturday, January 17, 2015 in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Julia Rivers Mullis

PAGELAND — Ms. Julia Rivers Mullis, 81, of Pageland, SC went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 16, 2015 while surrounded by her loving family.

Ms. Julia Rivers Mullis was born on November 27, 1933 to the late Horace and Tessie Rivers. She later united in marriage to Floyd W. Mullis who precedes her in death. She retired at Dawson Industry as a knitter. When she retired, she enjoyed spending time with her daughters and grandchildren. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Ms. Mullis is preceded in death by her Sister, Kate Plyler.

Ms. Julia Rivers Mullis is survived by her Daughters, Janet Collins (Ronnie) of Monroe, NC and Pam Hutto (Hamilton) of Pageland, SC, Brothers, William Rivers (Betty) of Bel Air, MD, Gerald Rivers (Janice) of Chesterfield, SC and Robert Rivers (Nancy) of Chesterfield, SC, Sisters, Madge Mullis of Monroe, NC, Barbara Davidson of Lexington, SC, Margaret Davis (D.T.) of Hartsville, SC, Gloria Wallis (Jim) of Columbia, SC, Lynne Davis (Edmund) of Hartsville, SC and Jackie Steen (Jarvis) of Chesterfield, SC, Seven Grandchildren and Nine Great Grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 3:30 PM on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with Pastor Jeremiah Henderson and Pastor Gerald Rivers officiating. The burial will follow at the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 – 3:30 PM on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 7723 Pageland Hwy, Monroe, NC, 28112.

Nancy K. (Simonton) Roose

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Nancy K. (Simonton) Roose passed away Friday, January 2, 2015, at her home in Boca Raton, Florida. She was 66.

She was born July 24, 1948, in Reed City, Michigan, and lived in the LeRoy area until 1986. She was employed with McQuestion & Sons, coached LASSO softball, and volunteered at the First United Methodist Church in LeRoy. Mrs. Roose lived in Cheraw, South Carolina, from 1986 until 2011. She was employed at Crown Cork and Seal in the human resources department. She retired to Boca Raton, Florida, where she enjoyed baking and spending time with family.

She is survived by her daughters: Heather Roose of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Holly Roose Nilsen (Roy) and two grandsons, Carsen and Grant Nilsen of Boca Raton, Florida; sister, Karen (Mark) Wilkin of Chase, Michigan; and brothers: Craig (Brenda) Simonton of Tustin and James Simonton of Elizabethtown, Tennessee.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Wendall and Ruth Simonton of LeRoy, Michigan; and her husband, Gerald “Toby” Roose, also from LeRoy, Michigan.

A memorial service in her honor will be held Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Rose Lake Township Hall in LeRoy, Michigan. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Best Foot Forward Foundation which supports students in the foster care system. Details are at www.bestfoot.org/donate.

Thomas Ray Shealy

LITTLE RIVER — Thomas Ray Shealy, of Little River SC, formally of Chesterfield, SC, passed away on January 4, 2014 at Grand Strand Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Thomas, was born on October 28, 1941, in Chesterfield SC. Thomas was always hard working man, who started working summers at the age of 12, on shrimp boats out of Key West FL. Thomas was retired from Shealy Electric & Plumbing, in which he was self employed for close to 40 years. Thomas was also a retired volunteer firefighter. He started his firefighting career in Chesterfield SC and retired from the Little River Fire Department, where he had served as Captain. Thomas also enjoyed building his late model race car in his shop and racing in the challenger division at the Myrtle Beach Speedway. Thomas was a strong man who could do whatever he set his mind on, from building a wooden boat in his yard, to building a house from the ground up.

Thomas was preceded in death by his mother and father, Sarah Raye Eddins Shealy and Luther Wesley Shealy. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Vanderband Shealy, of the home. His daughters, Susan Shealy Flowers of Timmonsville SC and Kathy Shealy Rogers of Bennettsville SC. His son Thomas Ray Shealy Jr, from Lumberton MS. His Stepson, Steven McCaskill from Gatlinburg TN. His grandchildren, Colt Campbell, Jarrett Leviner, Jarrica Leviner, Sky McCaskill., Blake Pullens and Jaxon Kane, His great grandson, Drake Fraizer.

Brendan Michael Costello

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Brendan Michael Costello, age 87 died Friday, January 9, 2015.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Cheraw, SC. Interment will follow in St. David’s Cemetery.

A Rosary will be said at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, followed by visitation until 9:00 P.M. at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Brendan was born in Ireland, October 18, 1927, and came to the USA in 1959. He worked with MetLife as a manager and charter financial advisor, and was a charter member of MetLife Hall of Fame. Brendan retired to Chesterfield, SC in 1991.

Survivors include his Wife of 61 years: Angela; 3 daughters Dr. Fiona Nichols, Dr. Brenda Grabb, and Clare Costello; Also 2 Grandsons: Declan and Gavin Grabb.

Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC is serving the Costello family.

Charles A. Finch

CHERAW - Charles A. Finch of Cheraw, age 72, went to his eternal heavenly home on January 5, 2015. A memorial service was held at 2 pm on January 7, 2015, at White Oak Presbyterian Church.
Charles was born on June 19, 1942, the son of A.L. and Nellie Watson Finch. Charles retired from Takata Restraint Systems after 42 years of dedicated service. He was a avid reader and a faithful Gamecock fan. He loved to camp and fish with his wife Diane and was often accompanied by his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his son, Charles Randal and his sister, Martha Lee. Survivors include: his loving wife Diane Watson Finch, daughters: Janice (Jack) Fry of Greenvile, Joni (Keith) Rivers of Ruby, Sarah Beth (Chris) Chavis of Chesterfield and a son, Greg Gaskins, also of Chesterfield. Grandchildren: Nathan and Wesley Fry, Zachary, Logan and Tanner Gaskins, Dakota, Taylor, Savannah, Riley, and Katlin Rivers, Clinton, Jacob and Liberty Chavis. Step grandchildren: Jessie, Keri and Kayla Perdue and Alan Chavis.
Memorials can be made to the homeless shelter or food bank of your choice.

Harry Eugene Gaddy

MORVEN – Mr. Harry Eugene Gaddy, 90, died Monday, December 29, 2014 at Woodridge Assisted Living Center in Monroe.
Services were 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 by the graveside in Griffin Cemetery in Polkton with Rev. Bill Whitlow officiating.
The family greeted friends beginning at 10:30am prior to the service at the graveside.
Harry was born January 1, 1924 in Anson County, NC a son of the late Simeon McRae Gaddy and Emma Ethel Porter Gaddy. He was a graduate of Wadesboro High School and attended Wingate Junior College after returning from serving in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired from the Southern California Transit District..
Surviving are his wife, Faire Belle Tucker Gaddy; his sons, Harry E. “Gene” Gaddy, Jr. and William M. “Bill” Gaddy and wife, Elaine both of Los Angeles, CA; his grandchildren, Rachel and Jestin Gaddy both of Los Angeles, CA; his brother and sister, Clayton C. Gaddy of Kernersville and Margaret Helen Hamden of Cheraw, SC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, J.W., Ray, Ed and Hubert Gaddy, Betty Ruth Hamden and Emily Sue Finison.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.

Clayton C. Gaddy Sr.

WADESBORO – Mr. Clayton C. Gaddy, Sr., age 95, died Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at the Kerner Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Kernersville, NC.
Funeral services were held at 2:00PM Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home with interment following in Anson Memorial Park. The family greeted friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00PM.
Clayton was born in Anson County on April 10, 1919, a son of the late Emma Ethel Porter and Simeon McRae Gaddy. Clayton had five brothers and three sisters. He was a graduate of Wadesboro High School and Catawba College, where he played football and baseball. Upon graduation, Clayton served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII as a P-47 fighter pilot.
He was married to the late Anna Bernice Green Gaddy for 66 years until her death in 2008.
With over fifty years of service in the textile industry, Clayton retired from Wade Mfg. as Vice President of the finishing division. He was an avid hunter and golfer, and tremendously enjoyed fishing trips with friends and family to his home at Sunset Beach. Clayton was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church until his health failed.
Survivors include his children, Kaye G. Morgan (Toby) and Jeanne G. Maynard both of Salisbury, Clayton C. Gaddy Jr. (Merry Anne) of Summerville, SC, Judy G. Sheetz (Greg) of Cornelius, and Sim Gaddy II (Rina) of Kernersville; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen G. Hamden of Cheraw, SC.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful staff at Kerner Ridge Assisted Living.

Kathryn Driggers Hatcher

WALLACE - Kathryn Driggers Hatcher, 71, died Saturday, January 3, 2015. Born in Wallace, SC she was a daughter of the late James and Novella English Driggers. She was the widow of Simmie John Hatcher, Jr. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and the UMW. She was a LPN with 26 years of service with Marlboro Park Hospital and 5 years of service with Cheraw Healthcare. She enjoyed fishing, knitting, crafts, canning and baking.

She is survived by her sons, Robert (Renee) Franklin Hatcher of Cheraw, SC, Earle Thomas Hatcher of Wallace, a sister, Martha Vivian Bryant of Wallace, SC, grandchildren, Caitlyn Purvis, Brittany Hatcher and a great grandchild, Braxton Waddel.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, a son John Michael Hatcher, and a brother James Edward Driggers.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, January 5, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM, Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Jackie Melton

CHERAW - Mr. Jackie Melton, age 58, died Sunday, January 4, 2015 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 3:00 PM, Wednesday, prior to the service at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Melton was born February 21, 1956 in Cheraw, SC a son of the late Jessie Wade and Lillie Williams Melton. He was a former truck driver. Jackie loved antiques, old signs and bargain shopping. He also loved going to flea markets, auctions, and spending time with his boys and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Jackie was also preceded in death by his brother, Jessie Evans and by his sister, Mary Melton Davis.

Survivors include Wife: Sherry Lewis Melton of the home; 3 Sons: Jackie (Cheyene) Melton of Cheraw, SC, Jacob (Allison) Melton of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Drake (Leslie) Melton of Cheraw, SC; 7 Grandchildren: Lily, Clayton, Hailee, Josie, Baylee, Avery, and Emalyn Melton,

Janie Bundy Usher

BENNETTSVILLE - Janie Bundy Usher, 91, died Thursday, January 1, 2015. Born in Bennettsville, SC she was a daughter of the late Warren Lamar and Beulah U. Bundy. She was the widow of Joseph Earl Usher, Jr.

Surviving is her son, Joseph (Betty) W. Usher of Cheraw, SC, a daughter-in-law, Betty P. Usher of Bennettsville, SC, grandchildren, Brenda Usher Tyndall, David Michael Usher, Jr., Latoria Hope Usher Starling, Dennis Wayne Usher, nine great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, a son, David M. Usher, and a sister, Grace B. Howell.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A graveside service was held 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 4, 2015 in Sunset Memorial Park, Bennettsville, SC.
