Ethel Anne Furr Rainwater

CHERAW - Ethel Anne Furr Rainwater, 78, died Monday, December 15, 2014. Born in Cheraw, SC she was the daughter of the late Eddie K. and Lula H. Furr. She grew up in a loving family, the youngest of five. Ethel attended Cheraw High School, she attended college later in life, graduating with honors from Coker College (BA in Business) 1995. Ethel was a purchasing manager at both Burlington Industries and Waverly Mills. She had served as Program Chair and Membership Chair of the National Association of Purchasing Managers.

Ethel loved and embraced life. She was many things to many people – a servant of the church, and loving mother, a loyal friend. Her passions included her faith, family and friends. She was our go-to person for cooking tips and recipes, an all-weather running partner, and avid collector of books and ideas.

She is survived by her children James “Jim” P. Rainwater of Florence, SC and Anne Elizabeth Rainwater Strange of Birmingham, AL; nieces Linda Johnson White and Jo Anne Butler, and nephews Olin Leslie Johnson, Ray Manning Kelly, James Edward Kelly, Sr. Jackie Farrell Furr and Tony Cecil Butler.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above and a son, William “Bill” F. Rainwater, Jr.

A funeral service was held 1:00 PM, Friday, December 19, 2014 at Cheraw First Baptist Church, followed by a short visitation in the family life center of the church. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to: McLeod Hospice House, PO Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502.

Ernest James Smith Jr.

CHERAW - Ernest James Smith, Jr., 78, died Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Born in Smithville, SC he was a son of Ernest James and Blanch Grant Smith. He was a member of the Wallace Church of the Nazarene. He has a Masters in Electronics and was an Amateur Radio Operator “KA4NIW.” He was a NOAA Skywarn Spotter. He enjoyed fishing, aviation, observing wildlife, drawing, and amateur radio.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Frances Sheppard Smith of Cheraw, SC, a son, Ernest “James” (Susie) Smith, III of Hamlet, NC, daughters, Barbara Smith Sowell of Hartsville, SC, Christine (Jeff) Smith Taylor of Rock Hill, SC, Cathy (J.A.) Smith Graves of Cheraw, SC, a brother, Charles Edward (Diane) Smith of Wallace, SC, a sister, Kathryn Gayle (F.B.) Chavis of Wallace, SC, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Wallace, SC.

Vera Wade

PAGELAND - Vera Wade, 71, died on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 2pm from the Mount Harmon Missionary Baptist Church, Pageland, South Carolina. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Vera was born to the late Clarence and Maggie Bracy Lockhart in Chesterfield County, SC on March 6, 1943. She was married to the late David Wade. She was educated at Washington DC, North & South Carolina. She was employed by the Fairfax County School District. Survivors: Son, Brian Wade (Sandra), Derrick Allan Wade, Terrell Wade and Michael Wade all of Virginia; Siblings, Peggy Dorsey (Sterling) in MD, Clarence Lockhart Jr (Linda) of SC, Graylon Lockhart of DC, Billy Ray Lockhart of GA, Ronnie Lockhart (Tonya) of VA, Mary Lynn Miller of SC, Darryl Lockhart of VA and Vicky Clark (Calvin) of SC; a host of Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.

Willard Hill Allred

MT. CROGHAN - Willard Hill Allred, age 84 of Mount Croghan, SC passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at his home.

Will was born January 12, 1930 to Jesse Willard Allred and Sarah Hill Allred. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ann Allred. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married his soul mate and best friend, Ann Allred April 14, 1956. He worked for Hunter Dairy, E B Stone Finance Company, retiring as President & Chairman of the Board in 1974. Mr. Allred started Carolina Southern Real Estate and Construction in 1974 until retirement in 1983. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren as well as farming and being outdoors with his horses after his retirement.

He is survived by his Three Sons, Mike (Jane) Allred of Lincolnton, NC, Scott (Gail) Allred of Laurel Hill, NC, and Jesse Allred of the home, Sisters, June Kay of Charlotte, NC, Ruth Allred and Susan Gardner of Clover, SC and Five Grandchildren, Michael, Sarah, Rachel, Taylor and Chandler Allred.

The Celebration of Life Graveside Service was held at 3:00 PM on December 7, 2014 at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 15000 York Road, Charlotte, NC with the Rev. Bob Jack officiating. The burial followed at the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Saturday December 6, 2014 at Baumgartner Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Pageland, PO Box 36, Pageland, SC, 29728 or to Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, 15000 York Rd., Charlotte, NC 28278.

Da’Jon Devonte’ Blakeney

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jackson, NC- LCpl Da’Jon Devonte’ Blakeney, 19, died Saturday, December 6, 2014. Funeral services were held Friday, December 12, 2014, 1pm at the Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Lancaster, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Da’Jon Blakeney was born June 23, 1995 in Lancaster, SC to Shawntanya Diane Blakeney Wright and James Earl Wright. He graduated from Central High School, Pageland, SC, Class of 2013. After graduation, Da’Jon joined the United States Marines Corps. Survivors: parents, Shawntanya Diane Wright and James Earl Wright; 3 sisters, Jasmine Wright, Shakeria Wright and Na’Asia Wright of the home; grandparents, James and Annie Wright, McBee, SC and Hayne and Diane Blakeney, Pageland, SC; great grandmother, Nannie Bell Ellis, Lancaster, SC. .

Wilma Jean Trent Jarrett

CHERAW - Mrs. Wilma Jean Trent Jarrett, age 79, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 13, 2014 at First Southern Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Friday, December 12, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jarrett was born December 26, 1934 in Barbourville, KY a daughter of the late John and Elen White Trent. She was a homemaker, a faithful pastor’s wife, and a member of First Southern Methodist Church. She enjoyed growing pretty flowers, making crafts, and going to yard sales. In addition to her parents, Jean was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Ty and Junior Trent; and by 3 sisters, Grace McKinney, Esther Brock, and Thelma Wallace.

Survivors include Husband: Dr. Jack C. Jarrett of the home; 4 Sons: Kerry (Kim) of Auburn, GA, Greg (Robin), Joe, and Steve (Wendy) all of Cheraw, SC; 2 Daughters: Karen (Jim) of Carrollton, GA and Sherry (Michael) of Rome, GA; 3 Brothers: Curtis Trent of London, KY, Doral Trent of Heidrick, KY, and Nay Trent of Bluffton, SC; 2 Sisters: Barbara (Zeke) Foster of Heidrick, KY, and Carolyn (David) Wambles of Manchester, KY; Also: 12 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Betty Louise Burch

MT. CROGHAN – Mrs. Betty Louise Burch, age 72, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at her home.

A funeral service was held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Mt. Croghan Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Burch was born November 29, 1942 in Monroe, NC a daughter of the late Buford and Quinna Bell Jackson Johnson. She was a former employee of Chesterfield Yarn Mills, a loving caregiver, and a member of Mt.Croghan Baptist Church. Louise enjoyed working puzzle books, gardening, raising chickens and working in her flowers. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Burland Jackson Burch, Jr.; brother, Junior Boone; sisters, Clarene Gaddy and Barbara Gainey; and 2 grandchildren, Avery Jordan Burch and Rosa Louisa Yanez.

Survivors include 1 Son: Daniel Jackson (Elle) Burch of Mt. Croghan, SC; 3 Daughters: Betty Burch (David) Deese, Queena Burch (Carlos) Yanez, and Crystal Gail Burch of Mt. Croghan, SC

3 Grandchildren: Heather and Hailey Deese, and Quinton Yanez.

Colenzo Evans

PAGELAND – Rev. Colenzo Evans, 84 died Monday, December 1, 2014. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 4, 2014, 1 pm at the Flint Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the Pleasant Plain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Lancaster, SC.

Colenzo was born in Lancaster County, SC April 16, 1930 to James and Nannie Mae Horton Evans. He attended Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC and received his BS and MS degrees from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC after serving in the US Army. In 1968, he became principal of McBee Elementary School in McBee, SC, retiring in 1983. He served as pastor of St. John Baptist Church, Sharon, SC and Nicey Grove Baptist Church, Wingate, NC. Survivors- wife, Pansy Threatt Evans; children, Lloyd (Virginia) Nance, Jacksonville, FL, Deborah (George) Clyburn, Pageland, SC, Wanda (Mark) Turner, Columbia, SC, Clenzetta Evans, Pageland, SC and Rodney (Letha) Evans, Pageland, SC; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 3 sisters. .

J. Herbert Foster

CHERAW – J. Herbert Foster, 84, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at his home.

Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late James J. and Lucy Zimmerman Foster. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Foster was retired as City Executive with Carolina Bank of Cheraw, SC. He was the former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Chesterfield General Hospital and a former board member of the Chesterfield County Board of Disabilities.

Surviving is his wife Mabel Coggins Foster of the home and a son, Jeffrey Lee Foster of the Home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 28, 2014 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC with Dr. Kurt McPherson, Rev. Ed Davidson and Rev. David Townsend officiating. A private family burial followed on Saturday.

The family received friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Friday, November 28, 2014 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Sarah Frances Gathings

CHERAW – Sarah Frances Gathings, 80, died Friday, November 28, 2014. Born in Bennettsville, SC she was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Ida McDougald Quick. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. She enjoyed baking cakes, crossword puzzles and spending time with grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband Harold Gathings, sons, William H. Gathings, Keith Gathings all of Cheraw, SC, brothers, Rufus Quick of Cheraw, SC, Bo Quick of St. Paul, NC, a sister, Mae Quick of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren John and Michaela Gathings.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above and a grandchild, Tyler Gathings.

The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Frances Brooks Hinson

WALLACE – Mrs. Frances Brooks Hinson, age 88, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at her home.
A funeral service was held at 4:00 PM, Friday, December 5, 2014 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hinson was born February 8, 1926 in Wallace, SC a daughter of the late Charlie Preston and Inez Driggers Jacobs. She retired from Burlington Industries with 42 years of service. After her retirement, she worked with the children at Chesco for two years. She was also a volunteer with Chesterfield General Hospital for five years. Mrs. Hinson was a faithful member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years, and also held various offices in the church. Frances was a member of Woodman of the World Lodge 0966. In addition to her parents, Frances was also preceded in death by her husbands, Oliver James Brooks and Fred Hinson; and by two sisters, Ollie Esther Quick and Ethelrine English.

Survivors include 1 Daughter: Patricia B. Quick of Wallace, SC; 2 Stepchildren: Freda Gardner of Round Rock, TX and Thomas Hinson of Indiana; 3 Grandsons: Michael (Minnie) Quick, Jimmy (Dr. Angela) Quick, and Terry Quick; Great Grandchildren: Colby Quick, Caitlin Quick, Kristen Sutton, Kaylynn Quick and Payden Quick; 1 Brother: Arte Jacobs of Wallace, SC; and

1 Sister: Margaret Pierce of Wallace, SC.

CHERAW – Mrs. Doris Therrell Lambert age 92, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Friday, December 5, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Friday, prior to the service at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lambert was born January 21, 1922 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late William Thomas Therrell and Martha Rebecca Melton Therrell. She was a retired employee of Georgia Pacific and a member of Westside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Doris was also preceded in death by her husband Paul C. Lambert; 6 brothers, Henry, Paul, Robert, Olin, Minor, and Roy Therrell; 3 sisters, Esther Terry, Millie Wilkes, and Elgia Dalton; and a son-in-law, Rev. Vernon Lewis.

Survivors include Son: William “Bill” (Gloria) Lambert of Cheraw, SC; 2 Daughters: Shirley L. Lewis of Patrick, SC and Paulette L. (Robert) Herres of Brandon, FL; Also: 8 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Children.
