Willie Rufus Blair Jr.

PAGELAND - Willie Rufus Blair, Jr. 58, died on Thursday, August 6, 2015. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 1PM Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Waxhaw, NC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born on July 5, 1957 in Lancaster, SC to Sarah Baxter Blair and the late Rufus Blair. He was employed with Equipment and Supply Company in Monroe, NC for 32 years. Survivors: his wife, Brenda Blair; a daughter, Shannon Purches (Christopher), Hartsville, SC; his mother, Sarah Blair, Lancaster, SC; a sister, Mary Coleman (Reverend Elvis Coleman), Lancaster, SC; three brothers, Adis Blair (Theresa), Kernsville, NC, Perry Blair, Lancaster, SC and Robert Blair (Lamonica), Lancaster, SC. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge.

MT. CROGHAN - Leak Burch, 85 died on Monday, July 27, 2015. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 1PM from the Timmonsville Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Croghan, SC. Burial followed in Church Cemetery. He was born on July 15, 1930 to the late Edward Malloy Burch and Ella Hubbard. Survivors: wife, Mary Helen Burch; a daughter, Gladys Mae Pegues, Jefferson, SC; two sisters, Creola Ezell (Rev. Robert), Charlotte, NC and Min. Wilma Lee Rorie, Mt. Croghan, SC; two brothers, John B. Blakeney, Williamston, NC and Hayward Burch (Andrea), Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield handled arrangements. .

Patricia Anne Huggins McDermott

CHERAW - Patricia Anne Huggins McDermott, 71, died Wednesday, August 5th, 2015. Born in Cheraw, SC, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Eunice Freeman. She was the widow of Joseph James McDermott. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Wallace, SC. Mrs. McDermott enjoyed cooking, sewing, and singing in the church choir.

Surviving are sons, Harold Bieber of Loganville, GA, James Tarasiewicz of Chesterfield, SC and a daughter Denise McBee of Mohrsville, PA, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM, Saturday, August 8th, 2015 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, SC.

A funeral was held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, August, 8th, 2015 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, SC. Burial followed in the Quick Cemetery at Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

CHERAW - Alice Arteal Merriman, 95 died on Thursday, July 23, 2015. Funeral services were held on Friday July 31, 2015 at 1PM from the Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church in Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery. She was born on September 16, 1919 to the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Survivors: a daughter, Christine (Kenneth) Black, Queens, NY; a son, Fernando (Evelyn) Miller, Jersey City, NJ; ten grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren and great greatgrandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Cheraw handled arrangements. .

Jesse S. Roberts

CHERAW - Mr. Jesse S. Roberts, age 84, died Wednesday, August 5, 2015.

A service of celebration was held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC.

Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 8, 2015 prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Roberts was born September 24, 1930, in Eastover, SC, a son of the late

Spergion and Helen Neal Roberts. He attended Welding School in Columbia, SC, and was a farmer and welder, and former owner of Robert’s Fabricating. Jesse was also a former employee of INA USA and was a retired Chesterfield County landfill operator. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division. Jesse was also a member of the American Legion Post 74, First Baptist Church of Cheraw and the Friendship Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, Jesse was also preceded in death by a sister, Christine Warren, his brothers, Frank, Neal, and A. J. Roberts, and by a brother-in-law, Lawson Sellers.

Survivors include his Wife: Betty Tucker Roberts of the home; 4 Sisters: Elaine Smith of Monroe, NC, Rebekah (Anson) Jacobs and Neatus Sellers of Cheraw, SC and Sybil (Johnny) Hill of Chesterfield, SC; Sister-in-law: Loretta Roberts of Cheraw, SC; Also Nieces and Nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale Street, Memphis, Tenn. 38105, Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Bernice Russell Roscoe

CHERAW - Mrs. Bernice Russell Roscoe, age 84, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at her home.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, July 31, 2015 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Roscoe was born September 7, 1930, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late Ferris and Mary Eliza Teal Russell. She was a retired dietician with Cheraw Nursing Home and Cheraw Manor, and was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Bernice enjoyed cooking, fishing, and sewing. She also loved growing pretty flowers, making crafts, and all types of needle work. In addition to her parents, Bernice was also preceded in death by her husband, Reece Roscoe, and by her brother L.D. Russell.

Survivors include 3 Sons: Kenny (Patricia) Roscoe of Charlotte, NC, Steve Roscoe and Scott (Marie Garza) Roscoe both of Cheraw, SC; 6 Grandchildren: Tina and Kenward Roscoe, Jenny and Jay Roscoe, and Russell and Roddy Roscoe; 3 Great Granchildren: Gracie Richardson, Brena’ Chapman, and Lilly Roscoe; Also: Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.

Lacy M. 'L.M.' Adams Jr.

CHERAW - Mr. Lacy M. “L.M.” Adams, Jr., age 78, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his home.

A graveside service with military honors was held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation was from 9:30 – 10:30 AM Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mr. Adams was born November 30, 1936 in Anson County, NC a son of the late Lacy Malloy Adams and Clara Bell Therrell Adams Smith. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving one tour of duty in the Korean Conflict, and three tours of duty in the Vietnam War. During his military career, Mr. Adams was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Expert Rifle & Pistol Marksmanship Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and achieved the title of Nationally Ranked Master. He was the owner and operator of L & M Antiques. In addition to his parents, Lacy was preceded in death by his brothers, J.T., Joe, and Franklin Adams; 3 sisters, Iris Scott, Jewel Flowers, and Margie Butler; and by 1 grandchild, Madeline Grace Adams

Survivors include Wife of 55 years: Margaret B. Adams of the home; Son: Lacy M. Adams, III and wife Angie of Cheraw, SC; Daughter: Margaret Anne Adams Wallace of Woodbine, GA;

3 Grandchildren: Derik (Ashli) Adams of Chesterfield, SC, Haley Adams of Cheraw, SC, and Zachary Wallace of Woodbine, GA.

Mr. Thomas Lee Weston

Thomas Lee Weston, 47, was born on November 25, 1966 in Columbia, South Carolina to Mary Roberts and the late Sam Weston. He departed this earthly life on Saturday, October 18, 2014.

Thomas attended the public schools of Richland County and graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1985. He was employed with GTG Insulation as a professional new home energy insulation installer.

Thomas enjoyed playing horseshoes, basketball, and was a devoted Oakland Raiders fan. He will be remembered as fun, loving, dependable, and a kind person who loved to cook.

Thomas leaves to cherish his precious memories, his parents Johnny and Mary Roberts of Columbia, SC; five children, Keitroy Harris of Columbia, SC, Kiwa Weston, Thomas Khalil Weston, both of Greenville, SC, Jalisa Weston and Thomas Neasey both of Columbia, SC; two brothers, Sam (Martesa) Weston, Jr. of Columbia, SC, and Samervon Weston of Hopkins, SC; a sister, Rochelle Tucker-Grant of Houston, TX; a special friend, Tammy Purnell; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and other loving relatives and friends who share the joy of his life.

Barbara Ann Lewis

CHERAW - Ms. Barbara Ann Lewis, age 63, died Friday, July 30, 2015.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM, Sunday, August 2, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Ms. Lewis was born November 28, 1951 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Clyde Wilson and Willie Voncille Odom Lewis. She was a former employee of IGA Bakery and attended Cheraw Family Worship Center. Barbara enjoyed talking with people and writing. She was always thoughtful to remember her family and friends on their birthdays with a card and phone call. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Sandy Lewis; brother-in-law, Dean Gulledge; and nephew, Richard Teal.

Survivors include 5 Sisters: Dorothy “Moss” (Son) Teal, Mary Gulledge, Faye (A.J.) Hilliard, Ida Mae “Toonie” (David) Sessoms, Carolyn (Steve) Ziegler all of Cheraw, SC; Sister-in-law: Dorothy “Dot” Lewis of Cheraw, SC; Nephews: John Wayne (Lynn) Teal, Danny Hilliard, and Scottie Haire all ofCheraw, SC; Nieces: Linda Driggers, Tammy Sessoms, and Kristie Ziegler all of Cheraw, SC.

Mary Bell McDonald

CHERAW - Mary Bell McDonald, 78 died on Friday, July 17, 2015. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 1PM from the Pee Dee Union Baptist Church Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in Fisher Hill Community Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. She was born on April 8, 1937 to the late Frank and Mary McDonald in Cheraw, SC. Survivors: two sons, Stacey K. McDonald and Wayne T. McDonald (Lynn), both of Cheraw, SC; four sisters, Marguerite Morrison (James Bobby), Claudia Flowers, Hannah Mae Burch (Reece) and Lavenia Wilson (Harvey), all of Cheraw, SC; two brothers, Frank McDonald, Jr. (Senia) and Charles McDonald (Nellie), both of Cheraw, SC; three grandchildren and two great granddaughters. Flemming Funerals-Cheraw handled arrangements. .

Peggy Ann Holley Nolan

SOCIETY HILL - Peggy Ann Holley Nolan, 81, of Society Hill, died Thursday, July 23, 2015. Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 26, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Peggy was born in Danville, Virginia to the late Russell T. Holley and Mary Oakes Holley. She graduated from Whitmell Farm-Life High School in 1951. Peggy was a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church for 55 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, sang as a choir member, worked on the Helping Hands Committee, was part of the Welsh Rambler Group and served on the Women’s Circle. She enjoyed traveling on several church bus tour trips. Her favorite travel experiences included a cruise to Nova Scotia and a Northwestern Christian tour to Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. Peggy retired from Weller Industries in Cheraw, where she worked in the payroll department from 1982-1996. She also worked at Perfection America and the Maynard Lumber Company, serving in data entry and business support. Earlier in her career, she worked at Dan River Mills and JP Stevens.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 61 years, Julian Nolan, her daughters, Sheila Kaye (Aly Antonio) Colon of Lexington, Virginia, Judy Ann (Garry) Flowers of Darlington, Susan Ellen (William) Alford of Chesterfield; her grandchildren, Christina Colon, Elizabeth Flowers, Jonathan Flowers, Bill Alford, Randy Alford, Faith Alford, Betty Bowers (Alford), Jennifer Driggers (Alford); her great grandchildren, Noah Bowers, Ethan Bowers, Braden Bowers, Fore Driggers, Sara Driggers and Kaylee Alford; her brothers, Calvin (Patsy) Holley and David (Evelyn) Holley, both of Danville, VA. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Holley, and her granddaughter, Holley Nicole Alford.

Memorials may be made to Welsh Neck Baptist Church, designated for the Bus Fund or the Handicap ramp fund, PO Box 28, Society Hill, SC 29593.

CHERAW - Julia Gainey Shields, 79 died on Thursday, July 16, 2015. Funeral services were held on Tuesday July 21, 2015 at 3PM from the Fisher Hill Community Baptist Church in Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Fisher Hill Community Baptist Church Cemetery. She was born on June 29, 1936 to the late John H. and Mattie Ellerbe Gainey in Chesterfield County, SC. Survivors: Flemming Funerals-Cheraw handled arrangements. Survivors: her husband, Emmett Shields; two children, Tyrone Gainey and Lisa Gainey; three brothers, Ralph Burns (Zadie), Melvin Sanders (Shatesha) and Matthew Sanders (Vanessa); two sisters, Carrie Jones (William) and Rose Rembert (Hansel); four grandchildren and five great grandchildren; Flemming Funerals-Cheraw handled arrangements.

CHESTERFIELD - Johnny Smith, 74 died on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 4PM from the Flemming Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the St. James AME Zion Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. He was born on May 3, 1941 to the late Dorsey and Mary McBride Smith in Chesterfield County, SC. Survivors: his wife, Nora Jane Smith; two sons, Johnny (Marketa) Smith and Ervin Smith; three daughters, Shirley Isaac, Barbara Smith and Beverly Smith; six siblings, Brady Smith, Eddie Smith, Dorsey Smith, Jr., Clara Smith, Marie Knight, Ella Mae Smith;15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield handled arrangements. .

Billy Curtis Crowley

PATRICK - Mr. Billy Curtis Crowley, age 77, died Sunday, July 19, 2015 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Bay Springs Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Crowley was born February 26, 1938 in Patrick, SC a son of the late Kenneth Moore Crowley and Ethelene Wilkerson Crowley. He was a graduate of McBee High School and was a retired building contractor. Billy was an avid checker player and loved watching the Price Is Right on television. In addition to his parents, Billy was also preceded in death by his wives; Evelyn Gainey “Jeannette” Crowley and Hilda Hoffman Crowley; and by three brothers, Kenneth, Jack, and Ronnie Crowley.

Survivors include 4 Daughters: Cynthia Crowley of Charlotte, NC, Anne (Jerry) Brumley and Joan Pittman of Patrick, SC, and Wanda (Chris) Yow of Randleman, NC; 7 Grandchildren: Terry (Mark) Basnight, Brent Brumley, Tyler (Brandi) Brumley, Jen Pittman, Jalee Pittman, Miranda Yow, and Caitlin Yow Also 5 Great Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Jimmy (Cheryl) Crowley of Greenville, SC and Donnie (Sandra) Crowley of Patrick, SC; 1 Sister: Barbara (Maury) Feinstine of El Paso TX; 2 Sisters-in-law: Sylvia Crowley and Ruth Crowley Parks of Patrick, SC; Also: several Nieces and Nephews.
