JEFFERSON - James Ernest Huntley, 74 died on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 4PM from the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the Morning Star Holiness Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. He was born December 22, 1940 in Union County, NC to the late A.D. Huntley and Lena Huntley. Survivors: wife, Lendora T. Huntley; two daughters, Beverly Gilbert (John), Moneka S. Huntley; two sons, Mitchell Huntley (Lisa) and Darian Huntley (Alana); eight sisters, Gertrude Belton, Helen Staton, Carolyn Jackson, Katie Williams (Thomas), Barbara Johnson, Julia Ainsworth (Bill), Willie Mae Johnson and Delphenia Rorie (James); four brothers, Booker T. Huntley (Pat), John Henry Hough (Becky), Kermit McGee and Curtis McGee (Eunice); 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Flemming Funerals-Pageland handled arrangements.

Charles George Melton

CHESTERFIELD - Charles George Melton, 88 died on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 3PM from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Davidson Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. He was born on September 17, 1926 to the late Ross and Carrie Lee Redfearn Melton, Sr. in Chesterfield, SC. He departed this life on Saturday, June 27, 2015 in Cheraw, SC. Survivors: wife, Fannie L. Melton, Chesterfield, SC; three daughters, Hattie M. Talley (Tony), Chesterfield, SC, Deborah Meadows (Jimmy), Wingate, NC and LaCarol Harris (Chris), Charlotte, NC; a son, Jerry W. Melton, Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield handled arrangements.

Alvin Sanders

CHERAW - Minister Alvin Sanders, 51 died on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Memorial services was held on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 2PM from the Word of Life Fellowship Church, Cheraw, SC. He was born on April 30, 1964 in Cheraw, SC and departed this life on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC. Alvin graduated from Central High School in 1983. He attended South Carolina State University, where he received a degree in Business Management. Continuing his education, he received a Certificate in Supervision and Management from Northeastern Technical College and his Bachelors of Science Degree from Gardner Webb University. Alvin served in the United States Armed Forces, 1987-1989. He was the head coach for the Cheraw High School Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team and an assistant coach for the Cheraw High School Varsity Girls Basketball Team. Survivors: wife, Priscilla S. Sanders; a son, Ashton Xavier McMillan; five brothers; Levon Long (Nek), Mychael Sanders (Yolonda), Tony Hughes, Alexander McDonald and Larry Blakeney (Barbara); ten sisters, Ruthie Simpson, Starr Ann Thomas, Catherine Thomas, Mary Holmes, Helene Littlejohn, Joquetta Sanders, Teressa Hughes, Katrina Hughes, Chante Walls (Moses) and Dana Streater (James). Flemming Funerals-Cheraw handled arrangements.

Henry McGill Blackmon

PAGELAND - Mr. Henry McGill Blackmon, age 75, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at his home.

A graveside service was held at 6:00 PM, Thursday, June 25, 2015 at First Baptist Church Cemetery, Pageland, SC.

Mr. Blackmon was born August 25, 1939, in Clover, SC, a son of the late Roy Franklin and Reba Turner Blackmon. He was a retired supervisor with the Yarn Mill. Henry enjoyed fishing and yard sales. In addition to his parents, Henry was also preceded in death by his wife, Faye Mills Blackmon, his son, Tony Ray Blackmon, and by his 4 brothers, Ben, Ralph, Walt, and Bob Blackmon.

Survivors include 2 Grandchildren: Anthony B. (Ashley) Blackmon and Jessica N. Blackmon of Pageland, SC; Great Granddaughter: Brianna D. Blackmon of Pageland, SC; and 2 Sisters: Barbara (Mikey) Barrett of Mt. Croghan, SC and Brenda (Joe) Hubalek of Texas.

J. L. 'Junior' Joplin Jr.

MT. CROGHAN - Mr. J. L. “Junior” Joplin, Jr., age 47, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at his home.

A graveside service was held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Joplin was born May 23, 1968, in Monroe, NC, a son of the late J. L. Joplin, Sr. and Roxie Mills Joplin. He was an employee of ALLVAC in Monroe, NC. Junior also enjoyed farming. In addition to his parents, Junior was also preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Joplin and by a brother-in-law Mickey Donahue.

Survivors include Wife: Tera Bearden Joplin of the home; Son: Jesse (Amanda) Joplin of Lancaster, SC; Daughter: Michelle Joplin of the home; Grandson: Landon Joplin; Brother: Danny (Millie) Joplin of Mt. Croghan, SC; and Sister: Shirley Joplin Donahue of Mt. Croghan, SC.

Ronald Werner May

MT. CROGHAN - Ronald Werner May, age 81 of Mount Croghan, SC, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Ronald proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. He retired from IBM after 33 years of faithful service, receiving numerous awards and patents. He followed his dream of becoming a Pilot. His greatest joy was being a Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. Ronald was preceded in death by Anne, the mother of his daughter and later by his second wife Mary.

He is survived by his daughter Pamela Earp; step daughters: Robin Lindsay, Roz Smith, Vickie Hall, Katherine Berube; Pamela’s children: Tristen Blount and fiancée Mandy, Morgan and Kaitlyn Earp; Robin’s children: Elaine Dragon and Daniel Lindsay; Roz’s children: Shannon and Clayton Smith; Vickie’s children: Jeffery and Chandler Walters; Katherine’s daughter: Christina Palumbo.

A funeral service was held at 11AM on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Heritage Funeral Home, Indian Trail Chapel. Burial followed at Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8PM on Monday, June 15, 2015 at the funeral home.

Phillip 'Phil' Walker Boan

PATRICK - Phillip “Phil” Walker Boan, 64, died Saturday, June 13, 2015. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late Ira Walker and Willie Mae Curry. He was a member of Woodman of the World. He enjoyed softball, basketball, collecting coins, Civil War Memorabilia including newspapers and paper money. He was an avid history buff.

Surviving is his wife, Evelyn Marze Boan of Patrick, SC, a son, Jonathan (Sarah) Boan of Patrick, SC, a sister, Gloria Copeland (Michael) Butler of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Tempest Boan, Aryanna Boan, Adalynn Boan, Hailey Boan, several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM, Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

Cynthia Brooks Nolan

CHERAW - Mrs. Cynthia Brooks Nolan, age 60, died Sunday, June 14, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Chesterfield Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nolan was born August 12, 1954, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of Lena Ratliff Brooks and the late Walter Leroy “June Bug” Brooks III. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, where she excelled in basketball. She also attended Chesterfield-Marlboro Tec., and was a former administrative assistant at INA USA. Cynthia was a former member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and attended C-4. She was an avid Gamecock fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and NASCAR. Cynthia was a true sports enthusiast, and loved watching all types of ball games. In addition to her father, Cynthia was also preceded in death by her brother, Walter M. “Mickey” Brooks.

Survivors include Husband: Tommy Nolan of the home; Son: Zachary Preston “Zach” Harpe and friend Jessie Jackling of Charleston, SC; Mother: Lena R. Brooks of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Step Sons: Adam (Chelsea) Nolan of Johnson City, KS and Cleveland Nolan of Shallotte, NC; 3 Step Grandchildren; 3 Sisters-in-law: Barbara S. Brooks of Greenwood, SC, Faye (Donnie) Connelly of Branchville, SC, and Jo Duffy of Cheraw, SC; Brother-in-law: Wayne (Joyce) Nolan of Clio, SC; 2 Nephews: Ty Brooks of Charleston, SC and Justin (Lacey) Brooks of Gaffney, SC; 3 Nieces: Lisa Bradley, Sherry Wilson, and Susanne Howell; 3 Aunts: Annie Lee Ratliff of Columbia, SC, Alice B. Parker and Betty B. Teal of Chesterfield, SC; and Special Fur Baby: Oreo.

Steven 'Steve' Edward Smith Sr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Steven “Steve” Edward Smith, Sr., age 63, died Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 5:00 PM, Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Hopewell Baptist Church.

Interment with Masonic rites followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 4:00 – 5:00 PM, Saturday, June 20, 2015 prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Smith was born June 24, 1951 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Donald “Don” Edward and Madge Huntley Smith. He was a former employee of Smith’s Superette, Lear’s IGA, and a former member of the SC National Guard. Mr. Smith was a member of Chesterfield Masonic Lodge 220, and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Steve’s favorite pastime was riding his lawnmower and mowing grass.

Survivors include Wife: Barbara B. Smith of the home; 1 Son: Steven Edward “Eddie” (Denise) Smith, Jr. of Indian Land, SC; 1 Daughter: Staci Jean Smith of Rock Hill, SC; 1 Stepson: Jason Brayboy of Chesterfield, SC; 4 Grandchildren: Maggie Smith, Brianna & Kaylin Brayboy, and Login Bridges; 1 Sister: Patricia (Dewitt) Lisenby of Chesterfield, SC;

Nieces: Angela Lisenby of Cheraw, SC and Michele (Neil) Adams of Chesterfield, SC; Nephew: Jimmy (Kim) Lisenby of Ruby, SC.

Mr. Teal was born August 28, 1953 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Jim Teal and Ruby Freeman Teal. He was a former employee of Crown Cork & Seal, and a faithful member of Zoar United Methodist Church. Jerry loved cars, car shows, and going out to eat.

Survivors 2 Sons: Matthew Teal of Charlottesville, VA and Daniel (Kacy) Teal of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Grandchildren: Makaya Teal and Braxton Teal and soon to be, Mary Margaret Teal, whom Jerry had named “Maggie May”; 2 Brothers: Jimmy (Dorothy) Teal of Wallace, SC and Steve Teal of Chesterfield, SC; 3 Sisters: Rachel Brooks of Chesterfield, SC, Theresa Gilmore of Hartsville, SC, and Margie Rogers of Bennettsville, SC; Also: Nieces and Nephews.

CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Lois Turner Gaskins, age 93, died Thursday, May 28, 2015.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Saturday, May 30, 2015 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gaskins was born December 23, 1921, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late John Wesley “Jack” and Pearlie Mae Burr Turner. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield Manufacturing and a member of Oakland Baptist Church. Mrs. Gaskins enjoyed crocheting, working in her flowers, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a dedicated Christian who loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and shared him with everyone she met. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Gaskins; 1 son, William E. “Buster” Gaskins; 1 daughter, Patricia Ann “Sue” Young; and by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

Survivors include Son: Tommy (Barbara) Gaskins of Pleasant Garden, NC; 2 Daughters: Faith Webb of Chesterfield, SC and Dianne (Ronnie) Sellers of Darlington, SC; 1 Sister: Margie Dew of Chesterfield, SC; Also: 7 grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.

Josephine Brooks Lowery Ratliff

MCFARLAN, N.C. – Mrs. Josephine Brooks Lowery Ratliff, 93, died Friday, May 29, 2015 at Cheraw Healthcare in Cheraw, SC.

Funeral services were at 11:00am Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry King officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

The family greeted friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Wadesboro and other times at the home.

Josephine was born April 6, 1922 in Richmond County, NC a daughter of the late John B. “Bunn” and Hattie Morgan Brooks. She cared for children in her home for many years and later worked at Wadesboro Nursing Home, retiring after 16 years there. She was a dedicated member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her children, Donnie (Mildred) Lowery of McFarlan, Lonnie Ray (Juanita) Lowery of Norwood, N.C., David Lowery and Mary (Devoide) Teal both of Cheraw, SC; her daughter-in-law, Dottie Ann Lowery of Chesterfield, SC; her sisters and brother, Lois Lowery of Springfield, VA, Peggy (Carl) Currie of Wilmington, N.C., Patsy (C.B.) White and Bill (Betsy) Brooks both of Lumberton, N.C., and Sue McRae of Laurinburg, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her step-children, Gayland Ratliff of High Point, N.C., Delton Ratliff of Iron Station, N.C., Dallas Ratliff of Lilesville, N.C., Ernestine Brooks of Huntersville, N.C., and Avis Crowley of McFarlan and their families.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Clayton Lowery and Monroe Ratliff, children, Charles, Larry and Dorothy Lowery, granddaughter, Elizabeth Renee Teal, and sister and brothers, Gladys White, Marshall Brooks and J.B. Brooks.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Becky Nelson, P.O. Box 13, McFarlan, NC 28103 or to Thompson Creek Baptist Church Meals on Wheels Program, 3365 Wamble Hill Rd., Chesterfield, SC 29709.

The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.

Katherine Mae Solt

CHERAW - Katherine Mae Solt, 85, died Monday, June 01, 2015. Born in Nazareth, PA she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Elda Labach Roth and the widow of Walter Solt. She loved to read and embroider, also, to watch NASCAR and football on TV.

She is survived by her son Carter (Rose Mari) Solt of Erie, PA, a daughter, Natalie (Randy) Smith of Sumter, SC, grandchildren, Corie (Jarrod) Teal of Cheraw, SC, Josh (Moreen) Solt of Erie, PA, great grandchildren, Caitlin Teal, Ethan Solt, Flynn Solt, sisters, Karen Roth of Lancaster, PA and Patti Metz of Nazareth, PA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, a brother, Lester Roth.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 11:00 AM Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
