Irene W. Sawyer
Retired winder

GASTONIA, N.C. - Irene Whitlock Sawyer, 94, widow of Willis Eugene Sawyer, of 404-A Wellons Drive, Gastonia, died at her home Dec. 12, 2002. A native of Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late William Jackson and Lillie Augusta Stone Whitlock. Mrs. Sawyer was a retired winder. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Gastonia where she was a member of the Golden Age Club.

Surviving are four daughters and a son-in-law, Virginia Nichols of Clover, Mattie Beavers of Gastonia, N.C.; Jewel Beavers of the home, Brenda and Larry Pinkston of El Paso, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mildred Sawyer of Gastonia, N.C.; Don and Nancy Sawyer of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Annie Mae Waldrop of Union; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 at First Freewill Baptist Church, 2316 Union Road, Gastonia. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Freewill Baptist Church by Dr. Randy Sawyer and Rev. William Calvert. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be: David Polk, Barry Friday, Eddie Horne, Ronnie Wright, Curtis Martin and Glenn Atchley.

Memorials may be made to the Choir Robe Fund, First Freewill Baptist Church, 2316 Union Road, Gastonia, N.C., 28054. Carothers Funeral Home of Gastonia, N.C. has charge of the arrangements.

Rufus V. Kite Jr.
Retired textile worker

GAFFNEY - Rufus Vestus Kite Jr., 80, of 208 7th Street, Gaffney, died Dec. 13, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center. He was born in Spartanburg, a son of the late Rufus Vestus Kite Sr., and Marie Hughes Kite McSwain. He was a retired textile worker. Mr. Kite was a veteran, a Mason, member of the Civitan Club and a member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Virginia Kite of the home; a son, Mike Kite of Gaffney; a daughter, Ann Kite Vassey of Union; a brother, Vernon Kite of Blacksburg; two sisters, Frances Daniel of Cowpens and Betty Hyatt of Gaffney; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilber Kite.

Visitation will be held at the Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home Sunday evening from 6 until 7. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Limestone Street United Methodist Church by Rev. Joyce Murphy. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of his son, Mike Kite, 153 Douglas Heights Drive, Gaffney.

Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C. 29342 or Limestone Street United Methodist Church, 910 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home, Gaffney, has charge of arrangements.

Earl Bishop Jr.
World War II veteran

Walter Earl Bishop Jr., 77, of 698 Bishop Road, Union, widower of Betty Coleman Bishop, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 5:53 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Bishop was born in Union on Nov. 2, 1926, a son of the late Walter Earl Bishop Sr. and Althea Bishop Bishop. He was a member of the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church. Mr. Bishop was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was retired from the Maintenance Department of the Union County School System.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy B. Patrick of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl Wayne and Andrea Bishop of Enoree and Roger D. and Elaine B. Bishop of Union; three grandchildren, Candee H. Humphries of Union, Roger Wayne Bishop and James Robert Bishop, both of Enoree; and two great-grandchildren, Zach Humphries and Anna Grace Humphries, both of Union.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. today at the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham. The family is at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Elaine Bishop, 605 Bailey Road, Union and received friends at the church immediately following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Randy Wilburn, 131 Bishop Rd., Union, S.C. 29379 or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Edna B. Chaney

Edna Brewington Chaney, 57, of 558 Thornridge Road, Union, widow of Terry E. Owings, died at her residence Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at 7:45 p.m. after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Lucy B. Kelly
Carlisle resident

Lucy B. Kelly, 85, of Carlisle died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Santuc on April 29, 1918, she was a daughter of the late James (Dank) and Mariah Johnson Kelly. She was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church and Women's Aide Society.

Surviving is a sister, Inez Land of Carlisle; two sisters in law, Hattie Kelly of Buffalo, N.Y., and Rosa Lee Kelly of Jersey City, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at James Chapel Church in Carlisle conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Murray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be from 2 until 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Whitney Funeral Home. The body will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jeanette M. Linder
Retired from Sunshine Cleaners

Sarah Jeanette Miller Linder, 80, of 332 Beltline Rd., Union, widow of Charles Linder, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at 7:42 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Linder was born in Chester on Oct. 15, 1923, a daughter of the late Claude F. and Eunice Estelle Dawkins Miller. She was a member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church and a member of the Oakmont Baking Club. Mrs. Linder was retired from Sunshine Cleaners.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Penny L. McCutcheon of the home and Mary Jane and Michael Redden of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Suzy Linder of Pensacola, Fla.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruby Coward of Columbia, Lucille Voiselle of Union and Tennie and Tom Weathers of Union; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Linder was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra June Linder, and two brothers, Ross B. Miller and James Dale Miller. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. today at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Reuben Wallace. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Michael Redden, 210 Stonebrook Drive, Fairwood, Union, and received friends ay the cemetery immediately following the graveside service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Ralph D. Black
World War II veteran

Ralph Dempsey Black, 81, of 102 Spring St., died Dec. 14, 2002, at 1:27 p.m. in Greenville Memorial Hospital. Mr. Black was born in Union on April 10, 1921, a son of the late W. W. Black and Josie Rochester Black. He was a Baptist and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. He was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving are two daughters, Anita B. Smith and Sue Black, both of Union; two sons, Ronnie Black of Georgia and Tab Black of Spartanburg; a sister, Virginia Carter of Union; three brothers, Rev. Frank Black of Anderson, Ray Black of Gaffney and Dean Black of California; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Black was predeceased by a son, Warren R. Black; a sister, Mary Davis and five brothers, Noel Black, Ed Black, Claude Black, Dewey Black and Louie Black. Graveside services were held at 11 this morning at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Warren Jones.

The family received friends at the cemetery following the service. Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 105 Lawson Ave., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Ferol G. Richardson
Retired from Union County Schools

Ferol Gregory Richardson, age 79, of 1859 Tinker Creek Road, widow of Melvin Robbins Richardson, died Dec. 15, 2002, at 9:15 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mrs. Richardson was born in Union on June 24, 1923, a daughter of the late William Smith Gregory and Sudie Bentley Gregory. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and was retired from the Union County School System.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Richardson of the home; a sister, Myrtle Maybin of Union; a brother, Manning Gregory of Chester and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1858 Tinker Creek Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rachel S. Smith
Former Conso Products and Klapat employee

Rachel Sanders Smith, age 72, wife of Paul H. Smith of 627 Sardis Road, died at her home Dec. 13, 2002, at 10:10 p.m. Mrs. Smith was born in Union on Feb. 23, 1920, a daughter of the late John P. Sanders and Pearl May Sanders. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church, a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Conso Products and Klapat.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Linda S. Parks and Brenda S. Gallo, both of Union; a son, Paul Hayward Smith of Sumter; a sister, Cornelia S. O'Shields of Union; two brothers, Hayward B. (Buck) Sanders of Jonesville and Wallace Sanders of Pacolet; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held this morning at 11 at Sardis United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Angelia Price.

The following formed the honorary escort: Ed Greer, Donald Ray Sanders, Roger Bailey and Eddie Smith. The family is at the home, 627 Sardis Road, and received friends Sunday night at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 353, Newberry, S.C. 29108-0352. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Edna B. Chaney
Former medical receptionist

Edna Brewington Chaney, 57, widow of Terry E. Owings, of 558 Thornridge Road, Union, died Sunday. Dec. 14, 2003. at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Chaney was born in Buffalo, June 19, 1946, a daughter of the late James (Black Cat) and Ethel Haney Brewington. She was formerly employed as a medical receptionist with Dr. R.M. Wentz in Lockhart. Mrs. Chaney was a graduate of Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Denise Chaney of the home and Tammy Teeter of North Carolina; a son, Eric Chaney of Union; two sisters, Elaine B. Smith of Union and Annette B. Palmer of Jonesville; and seven grandchildren, Shelly and Ashley Bryson, Adam and Jessica Fisher, Kassidy, Julia and Alyson (Aly) Chaney, all of Union.

Mrs. Chaney was predeceased by a sister, Jean B. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Tommy Turner, Brian Turner, Roy Turner, Freddie Crawford, Stanley Haney and Danny Joe Harling.

The following are asked to assemble at the chapel at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday to form the honorary escort: Terry Wayne Smith, Russell Bryson and Roger Dale Turner. Employees of Dr. Wentz's office and staff of Hope Hospital are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.

Memorials may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of New Hope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 728, Buffalo, S.C., 29321. The family is at the home, 558 Thornridge Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
