Norman Dallas Campbell

CHESTERFIELD – Mr. Norman Dallas Campbell, age 63, died Saturday, May 21, 2016.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 27, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Campbell Cemetery.

The family greeted friends immediately following the committal service.

Mr. Campbell was born February 15, 1953 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Norman Lee and Mary Elizabeth Lang Campbell. He was a retired employee of INA USA and a member of Sandy Plains United Methodist Church. Norman enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing music. One of his favorite hobbies was working in Taxidermy. In addition to his parents, Norman was also preceded in death by his brother in law, Larry Drummond.

Survivors include 4 Sisters: Ann Corbett of Chesterfield, SC, Barbara Faye Drummond of Cheraw, SC, Mary Ethel Campbell of Chesterfield, SC, Bonnie Louise (Gary) Leamon of Florence, SC; 1 Brother: Mitchell Campbell of Chesterfield, SC; Also: Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Michael J. ‘Goober’ Goodale

CHERAW – Mr. Michael J. “Goober” Goodale, age 66, formerly of Timmonsville, SC, died Sunday, May 22, 2016.

A graveside service was held at 4:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC.

Visitation was from 2:30 – 3:30 P.M. prior to the graveside service at the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Goodale was born November 1, 1949 in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late William Joseph and Wilma Rena Hurst Goodale. He was a retired supervisor with Ingram Lumber Company. Goober was a true people person and was an avid racing and football fan. In addition to his parents, Goober was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Voyd and Billy Goodale; 2 sisters, Violet Johnson and Margie Nesbitt; and also an infant sister.

Survivors include Children: Pierce Goodale, Lacey Goodale, and Collin Goodale and their mother, Kathy Davis Goodale, all of Timmonsville, SC; 2 Grandchildren: Aubrey and Christian Samuel; 1 Sister: Josephine Adams of Kannapolis, NC; 1 Sister-in-law: Mary D. Goodale of Chesterfield, SC; Also numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home for the “Michael J. Goober Goodale Funeral Fund”.

Lucille Howard Gray

CHERAW – Lucille Howard Gray, 91, died Saturday, May 21, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC she was the daughter of the late William Butler and Airelee Caudle Howard. She was the widow of Howard Edward Gray, her husband of 30 years. She was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church, Cheraw, SC where she had served on the altar guild and in the preschool and kindergarten. She was an avid gardener and had been the recipient of the Four Seasons, Yard of the Month Award on several occasions. She was a retired seamstress and had made many dolls (Raggedy Ann and Andy) for children in the community. Mrs. Gray had a servant’s heart and made it her mission to care for those in need or by suppling food.

Surviving are her daughters Betty D. Hurst of Cheraw, SC, Sarah (Valentyn Potapov) Potapova of Kinston, NC, Caroline G. Berry of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Kaitlin Berry, Emily Berry, Deborah (Russell) Whaley, Chappell (Alisa) Hurst III, Dana (David) Jarman, Jimmy A. Kimrey, Mary (Kenneth) McLain, Holly (Don) Haire. great-grandchildren, Micah Kimrey, Caleb Kimrey, Aiden Kimrey, Emily Kimrey, Joshua Kimrey, Cody Kimrey, Elijah Haire, Abigail Haire, Elissa Haire, Chappell Hurst IV, Grace Whaley, Phillip Whaley, Daniel Whaley, Savanna Daughtry, Michaela Eubanks, Destini Jarman. great great grandchildren Grayson Eubanks, and Hallie Eubanks, and a special friend, C.J. Eddins of Chesterfield, SC.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, sons, Allen Gray and infant son Ronnie, a daughter, Roger Brenda Kimrey, brothers, Alexander Luther Howard and Allen Wesley Howard and special lifetime friend, Janie Mills.

The family received friends 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw SC.

A funeral service was be held 1:00 PM, Monday, May 23, 2016 at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Burial was be at Old St. David’s Cemetery.

Sylvia Rivers Johnson

HARTSVILLE – Mrs. Sylvia Rivers Johnson, age 71, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at her home.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, May 27, 2016 at Patrick Baptist Church.

Interment followed in Patrick Cemetery.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. Friday, May 27, 2016 prior to the service at the Church

Mrs. Johnson was born March 10, 1945, in Hartsville, SC, a daughter of the late Pittman Victor and Catherine Vena Sellers Rivers. She received her BSN degree from USC and was a registered nurse. Sylvia was employed by the SC Dept. of Disabilities and Special Needs as director of QDIP at the Thad E. Saleeby Developmental Center. Sylvia has been a lifelong advocate for persons with special needs, and was a member of Patrick Baptist Church. Sylvia enjoyed growing flowers, reading, and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents Sylvia was also preceded in death by her brother Michael P. “Mike” Rivers.

Survivors include Husband of 48 years: Mike Johnson of the home; Son: Will Johnson of Hartsville, SC; Daughter: Julie Johnson of Hartsville, SC; Sister: Elaine R. (George) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; Sister-in-law: Janie C. Rivers of Hartsville, SC; Also Nieces and Nephews.

Harvey ‘Brick’ Keith

CHERAW – Harvey “Brick” Keith, 80, died Saturday, May 21, 2016. Born in Society Hill, SC he was a son of the late John and Sudie Walters Keith. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. He was a Veteran of the US Army. He worked at Associated Transport as a terminal manager and at Delta Woodside. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandsons. He enjoyed watching NASCAR Races and his favorite driver Kyle Bush. He enjoyed working in the yard and caring for the flowers and roses.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Patsy Poole Keith, a daughter, Debbie (Ben) Leppard of Rock Hill, SC, grandsons, Ben Leppard and Stephen Keith Leppard, a brother, Howard Keith of Spartanburg, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, brothers Rochell Keith, John Keith, Mack Keith, Zeke Keith, Odell Keith, Harold Keith, sisters, Ada K Johnson, Rezell K. Tucker and Sally K. Baker.

The family received friends 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM, Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial with military honors was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Irene Wallace Poston

CHERAW – Mrs. Irene Wallace Poston age 82, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, May 21, 2016 at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family.

A funeral service was held at 5:00 PM Monday, May 23, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Poston was born December 28, 1933 in Hamlet, NC a daughter of the Belton and Nona Smith. She was a retired office clerk with Delta Mills, and a longtime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Irene enjoyed square dancing, reading, and traveling. In addition to her parents, Irene was also preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Wallace and Lurie Poston, 3 brothers, James, Rudolph, and Belton Smith, Jr., and by her 3 sisters, Lillian Barber, Clara Herndon, and Pearl Olerud.

Survivors include 3 Daughters: Peggy Wallace, Darlene Flowers, and Debbie McCauley, all of Cheraw, SC; 2 Grandchildren: Amy Flowers and Suzanne McCauley; 1 Great Grandchild, Tranzley Adcock; 2 Brothers: Marshall Smith of Laurel Hill, NC and Floyd Smith of Hamlet, NC; and Special Caregiver: Diane Burr.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Larry M. Sweatt

SEAGROVE – Larry Martin Sweatt, age 55, of Seagrove passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Randolph Hospital.

Mr. Sweatt was born in Bennettsville, SC on March 18, 1961 to Landy and Bernice Lucas Sweatt. He was formerly employed with Asheboro Elastics for 18 years. Larry enjoyed fishing and was an avid Tarheel and Redskins fan. As he was unable to attend church on a regular basis due to his disabilities, Larry enjoyed watching Jimmy Swaggart on Sunday morning with his mom and dad.

He is survived by his son, Stephen Sweatt; mother, Bernice Lucas Sweatt; sister, Vickie Auman and husband Scott of Seagrove; nieces and nephews, Abby Auman and fiancée Todd Hunsucker and their son Zack, Matthew Auman and wife Ashley and their children Brantley, Henley, and Beasley, Lauren Poole and husband Michael and their daughter, Paisley.

The family received friends on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Society Hill Church of God, 378 Pressley Ave., Society Hill, SC with Rev. Larry Gainey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Olin Dewitt Adams Jr.
ASHEBORO, N.C. – Olin Dewitt Adams, Jr., 51, of Asheboro, died Thursday, May 19, 2016 at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tim Isley officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memorial Park.
Mr. Adams was born June 22, 1964 in Chesterfield, SC. He was retired from Food Lion, he loved fishing and spending time with his family. Mr. Adams was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed football and NASCAR.
Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his father, Olin Dewitt Adams, Sr.; and father-n-law, Jerry Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Anderson Adams of the home; daughter, Ashley Brooke Adams and fiancé, Phillip Ibsen, of Staley; sons, Cody Anderson Adams of Asheboro, Dylan Dewitt Adams of Greenville, NC; mother, Margaret Adams Hill and husband, Gerald, of Bennett; sisters, Ann Adams Payne of Bennett, Suzanne Hill Hensler and husband, Bart, of Florida; mother-in-law, Shirl Anderson Smith and husband, Skip, of Asheboro; and sister-in-law, Cathy Anderson Mason and husband, Reid, of Little River, SC.
The family received friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home.

James E. Chapman
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Full military rites for retired Army Major James (Jimmy) Elmer Chapman of St. Petersburg, Florida, formerly of Cheraw, were held on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 11:30am in Bushnell National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Jimmy passed away Friday, May 6, 2016, at Patrick Manor in St. Petersburg after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born December 22, 1935, he was the son of Henry Elmer and Mary Della Linton Chapman.

Jimmy attended Cheraw Public Schools where he was the ever-present entrepreneur. He sold peanuts from a booth at the end of Market Street downtown as a young boy and later worked as a curb hop at Cheraw's popular hangout, Cabin Creek.

Jimmy left Cheraw at age 17 and with the permission of his parents enlisted in the Army as a Private. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. After years of service and completing requirements for his high school diploma he later graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Later in his military career he graduated college and attained a Master's degree in Business Administration from Troy State University.

Jimmy was a proud U. S. Army veteran serving 23 honorable and faithful years. He answered his country's call serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His citations include the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor, the Bronze Star, 28 Air Medals of which 7 were issued with V device for valor, the Army Commendation Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Star device, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Senior Aviator Badge, and Senior Jump Wings.

After retirement from the Army in 1976, Jimmy established Chapman Air in Orlando, Florida (his last military assignment). After realizing a very successful second career, he decided to sell his company and remain in Florida.

Retirement for Jimmy included purchasing and developing land, traveling (often returning to Society Hill and Cheraw), and volunteering. He especially enjoyed driving a school bus taking children on field trips and planting vegetable gardens, always striving to give back to the community and nurturing the earth, following in his father's footsteps.

Jimmy spent the last year of his life at Patrick Manor where he was the first person to be honored "Resident of the Month" twice. He initiated in-house activities and always looked out for everyone else.

He is survived by two sons, Jim (Gina), St. Petersburg, Fl., and Bradley, Orlando, Fl., one daughter, Lori (Jeff) Brisson, Sorrento, Fl., a granddaughter, Sofia Chapman, two grandsons, Brandon Chapman and Dillon Brisson, one sister, Patricia Chapman Huff, Hartsville, S. C., one brother-in-law, Dick Carr, Asheville, N. C., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Edna Carr Chapman, a son, Douglas Chapman, his parents, a brother, Henry Chapman, and two sisters, Edna and Sandra Chapman of Cheraw.

Robert Edward Fuller

Robert Edward Fuller, son of Jannie Watson Fuller and Evans (Buddy) Fuller Sr., was born 13 Sept 1931 in Cheraw, SC. Robert spent his early childhood and teenage years in Cheraw, S.C. where he attended Coulter Memorial Academy.

On 24 Nov 1950, he joined the United States Army, and was selected to attend Airborne School. Upon completion, he was assigned to Frankfurt Germany, the first of four overseas tours; he completed two tours to Vietnam and two tours to Germany. Robert retired with over20 years of military service and was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal with One Silver and Two Bronze Service Stars, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Valorous Unit Commendation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the Parachutist Badge and finally he was an expert on the M16 rifle. As a parachutist, he was a proud member of both the infamous 101st Airborne Division, (Air Assault) XVIII Airborne Corps - nicknamed the Screaming Eagles and the 82d Airborne, 101st Airborne Division. A strong advocate of military service, he encouraged each of his five children to enter the military, all five of his children choose to follow in his footsteps.

He was a long time member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, where he served on Trustee Board.

An extremely sharp dresser, Mr. Fuller was always "dress right dress" or "dressed to the nines". He was always the sharpest dresser.

Predeceased by his sons, Jerome Hooks and Robert Fuller, Jr., two brothers, Benjamin and Fred Fuller and one sister, Lucille Esau.

Mr. Fuller is survived by his wife of 47 years, Tishia Mae Fuller, daughters Charlene Fuller White of Smyrna, Georgia; Patricia David, (Michael) of Cheraw, South Carolina; Terrie Fuller Mahoney (Eathel) of Conyers, Georgia; his elder brother, Evans Fuller, Jr. of Cheraw, South Carolina; his sister, Mamie Watts of Cheraw, South Carolina; one daughter in law Sarah Fuller of Cary, North Carolina; a host of nieces and nephews, and eight grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Betty George Joines

CHESTERFIELD – Betty George Joines, 77, died on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 3PM from the Drucilla AME Zion Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born on April 25th, 1939 to the late Ell Ratliff, Sr. and Emma Cranford Ratliff. Survivors: two sons, Tommy L. Joines, Jr., Chesterfield, SC and Christopher L. Joines (Jennifer), Belews Creek, NC; seven grandchildren: Teaira, Joines, Kirsten Joines both of Chesterfield, SC, Madison Joines, Christopher Joines, Jr., Matthew Joines, Julie Joines all of Belews Creek, NC and Christian McPhail, Hartsville, SC; two brothers, Jimmie Ratliff (Audrey), Chesterfield, SC and Johnny Ratliff (Anne), Columbia, SC; and five great-grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield was in charge.
