Marvin James Dutton

PAGELAND - Mr. Marvin James Dutton, 91, of Pageland, South Carolina, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, in Florence, South Carolina while surrounded by his loving family.

Marvin was born in Anson County on April 22, 1925, to the late Charles Marshall Dutton and Hattie Freeman Dutton. He later met and married the love of his life of 33 years, the late Evelyn Phillips Dutton. Marvin spent his life in the Pageland community, previously serving on the Town Council, the Watermelon Festival Committee and was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was the owner and operator of Pageland Nursery and was also a member of Pageland Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder for many years. He served as a forward observer in the European Theatre, including the landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. In addition to his parents and loving wife, Marvin is predeceased in death by brothers, Raymond Dutton, Bill Dutton, Sam Dutton, Marion Dutton, Walter Dutton, Lewis Dutton and Henry Dutton, sisters, Ina England, Mary Adams and Ruth Lill.

Those left to celebrate and remember his life include his loving daughters, Debbie Rivers (Eddie) of Pageland, South Carolina and Sandra Redfearn (Brother) of Cheraw, South Carolina, sister, Martha Scott of Garner, North Carolina, grandchildren, Bradley Redfearn (Tish) and Emily Adams (Scott), four great-grandchildren and also numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service was held at 3:30 PM on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland with Pastor Bobby Cato officiating.

The family received friends from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Baumgartner Funeral Home, 708 West McGregor St., Pageland, South Carolina 29728.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy In Me Free Health Clinic, PO Box 1684, Cheraw, SC 29520 or McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Frances Gilmore Jenkins

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Frances Gilmore Jenkins, age 86, formerly of Chesterfield, SC, took her final journey and went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Beacon Place Hospice House in Greensboro, NC.

She was born to the late Bunn T. Gilmore and Ida Rhines Gilmore on April 15, 1930. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years, Willie R. Jenkins; young daughter, Shirley Jenkins; grandson, Kevin Lawrence; 3 brothers, Lester, Jeff, and Greno Gilmore; and 1 sister, Myrtle Hancock.

She is survived by her brother, Ray Gilmore; her sons, Richard B. Jenkins and wife Debbie, Roger D. Jenkins and wife Carol; daughter, Becky Jenkins Lee and husband Edward. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 13 great – grandchildren, and 2 great – great grandchildren, and also her beloved dog, “Kindy Lou.”

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 24, 2017 at Fairview Baptist Church in Mt. Croghan, SC, by Rev. Ricky “Sweet” Jenkins and Rev. Richard Lee. She was laid to rest in the church cemetery next to her husband and daughter. The family greeted friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Following the committal service the family hosted a reception in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Beacon Place Hospice, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.

Arnate ‘Little’ Billy Lewis Jr.

CHERAW - Arnate “Little” Billy Lewis, Jr., 39, died Monday, March 20, 2017. Born in Florence, SC, he was a son of Arnate Billy Lewis, Sr of Chesterfield, SC, and Lenora Parker Lewis of Cheraw, SC. He was a loving spirit, a history buff and enjoyed science. He loved watching birds and spending time with his two dogs, Lola and Ava.

Surviving are his parents listed above, sisters, Sandra Lewis of Pageland, SC, Brenda Newsome of Cheraw, SC, Rebecca Lewis (Dr. Salim) Ghorra of Cheraw, SC and Lisa (William) Skipper of Cheraw, SC, girlfriend, Diana O’Connell of Swannanoa, NC, a nephew, Dalton Clark, and nieces, Molly O’Neal and Jodi O’Neal.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ricky Dean Lewis and Billy Joe Lewis.

The family received friends 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 23, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 4:00 PM Friday, March 24, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Cheraw, SC.

Burial followed at Old St. David’s Cemetery in Cheraw, SC.

Katherine Lucas Stanton

CHERAW - Mrs. Katherine Lucas Stanton, age 81, beloved widow of the late Everette Livingston Stanton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her loving daughters, while under the tender care of Hospice of South Carolina.

Born in the Maxton community of Scotland County, NC, on March 18, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Lucas and Bertha Lee Black Lucas. She attended Bethel UMC in Bennettsville and retired as an Inspector, after many years of dedicated service with United Technologies in Bennettsville.

Her hobbies included crocheting, quilting, sewing, traveling, baking cakes, taking pictures, and reading. She also enjoyed listening to the music of Elvis Presley, and visiting the towns of Gibson and Maxton, N.C. She will always be remembered by those who knew her as a sweet lady who loved her family and friends.

She is survived by two devoted daughters, Marie S. Sheppard and her husband James Lee Sheppard, Sr. of Cheraw and Beth Allen and her husband Ken of McColl; by a brother, Gary Joe Lucas and his wife Betty of Parkton, N.C.; by two sisters, Shelby Stubbs and her husband William of Gibson, N.C., and Margaret Hogan of Gibson, N.C.; by three grandchildren, Kenney Allen, Bryant Allen, and Jamie Sheppard; by three great-great grandchildren, Courtney Allen, Isabel Allen and Bryant Allen, Jr.; also by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Services were held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Rogers Funeral Home with burial following at Pinecrest Cemetery in Gibson, N.C. The family received friends from 2:00 P.M. until the service time on Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to: The Alzheimer’s Association, South Carolina Chapter 4124 Clemson Blvd – Ste L, Anderson, SC 29621; or to Hospice of South Carolina, 232 Hwy. 15-401 Bypass, Bennettsville, SC 29512.

Susan McCreight Tarlton

RUBY - Mrs. Susan McCreight Tarlton, age 74, entered into rest on Friday, March 24, 2017, at her home surrounded by her beloved family. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 26, at Ruby Presbyterian Church by Pastor Beth H. Muse with burial to follow in the Ruby Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 1:00 – 2:30 PM Sunday in the sanctuary of the church.
Mrs. Tarlton was born July 29, 1942, in Wadesboro, N.C., a daughter of Delesline “Scoot” and Katie Griggs McCreight. She attended Coker College. Susan retired from Harris, McLeod and Ruffner with 27 years of service as a real estate abstractor. Mrs. Tarlton was an active member of Ruby Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Ruby Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, Susan was also preceded in death by her brother, David Wilson McCreight; and brother-in-law, Jack Turpin.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Willie Lee “Bill” Tarlton, Jr. of the home; 2 sons, William Stephen Tarlton and wife Kathy of Ruby, SC, and Kevin Delesline Tarlton and wife Jessica of Waxhaw, N.C.; 3 grandchildren, Kassi Dale Tarlton of Ruby, S.C., Reese Marie Tarlton of Waxhaw, N.C.., and Conor Dominc Tarlton of Waxhaw, N.C.; sister, Jane M. Turpin of York, S.C.; and 2 sisters-in-law, Suzanne McCreight of Virginia, and Dottie Ann Lowery of Chesterfield, S.C.

Judy Perdue Donahue Threatt

PATRICK - Mrs. Judy Perdue Donahue Threatt, age 73, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Services were held at 12:00 PM Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Long Branch Baptist Church, Jefferson, S.C., by Rev. Joey Polson and Rev. Orville Threatt with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 11:00 AM -12:00 PM Saturday, prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Threatt was born July 16, 1943 in Chesterfield County, SC, a daughter of the late Elisha “E.P.” and Cora Jane Perdue. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield Manufacturing and a member of Palmetto Baptist Church. Mrs. Threatt enjoyed canning, working in her flowers and yard, and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Judy was also preceded in death by her first husband, Wilbert Donahue; and 1 sister, Dianne Hall.
Survivors include her husband, Ray E. Threatt of the home; 2 sons, Christopher Steven Donahue and Anthony Wilbert Donahue both of Jefferson, SC; 2 daughters, Debbie Sellers of Chesterfield, SC and Tonya Helms of Gastonia, NC; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, David Perdue of Patrick, SC, Donald (Judy) Perdue of Walnut Cove, NC, and Glenn Perdue of Patrick, SC; 2 sisters, Ida Mae Money of Patrick, SC and Evelyn McMahan of Lexington, NC.

PAGELAND - Bobbie Austin, 57, died on Friday, March 10, 2017. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 3PM from Flemming Funeral-Chapel, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the Nicey Baptist Church Cemetery, Pageland, SC. She was born June 27, 1959 to the late Roy Blakeney and Esther Helen Reid in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: four children, Roy Austin, Jr. (Kathy), Mark Austin, Kristopher McCoy and Jennifer Austin, all of Pageland, SC; four sisters, Barbara Smith (Preston), Washinton, DC, Dora Jackson, Bonnie Sue Blakeney, and Ciny Blakeney, all of Charlotte, NC and three grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Pageland. .

Tony Richard Bass Jr.

CHERAW - Tony Richard Bass, Jr., 44, died Friday, March 17, 2017. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of Jean Elizabeth Potter Bass of Cheraw, SC and the late Tony Richard Bass, Sr.

Surviving is his mother listed above, a daughter, Faith Bass of Bennettsville, SC, sisters, Amy Bass of San Antonio, TX, Beverly Sanchez of Winchester, WV, nieces, Hannah Bass, Victoria Flores, nephews, Toney Sanchez and Adan Sanchez, special friends, Christy Lovett, Junior Arnette, Debbie and Albert Clanton, Betty Quick, Ernest Stanley, Geraldine Johns, Ester and Richard Furr.

The family received friends 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Monday, March 20, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Monday, March 20, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in the Quick Cemetery at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Bennettsville, SC.

Marilyn Diggs Burr

MORVEN – Mrs. Marilyn Diggs Burr, 66, of Morven and formerly of Chesterfield, SC died Monday, March 13, 2017 at her home.

Funeral services were held at 11:00am Wednesday, March 15, 2017 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Larry King officiating. Interment followed in Morven Cemetery.

The family greeted friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Marilyn was born May 12, 1950 in Anson County, NC a daughter of the late Howard LeGrand Diggs and the late Sarah Henry Diggs. She was a graduate of Bowman High School and Coker College. She was retired from Johnson Controls in Florence, SC.

Surviving are her husband, Keith Burr of the home; her sisters, Susan Ratliff of Wadesboro and Faye Diggs of Cheraw, SC; her mother-in-law, Betty Burr of Chesterfield, SC; her sisters-law and brother-in-law, Kathy (Tom) Sheeler, Kaye (Rod) Clarke and Kurt Burr all of Chesterfield, SC and her nephews, Bruce Johnson and Jimmy Johnson both of Wadesboro and Lee Sheeler of Chesterfield, SC and Roddy Clark of Florence, SC and their families.

Also surviving are her aunts and uncles, Mark and Mandy Henry of Pelzer, SC and Bob and Sarah Doner of Pensacola, FL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.

Bobby Glenn Chapman

CHESTERFIELD - Bobby Glenn Chapman, 76, died on Sunday, March 5, 2017. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 3PM from the St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born to the late James and Ollie Murphy Chapman on June 12, 1940 in Chesterfield, SC. Bobby was raised in the home of his uncle and aunt, the late Nathaniel and Leasie Chapman Mumford. Survivors: his wife, Shirley B. Chapman; a son, Bobby Glenn Chapman, Jr., Chesterfield, SC; six sisters, Geraldine M. Malloy (John A.), Jeanette M. Sellars, Chesterfield, SC, Etta R. Chapman, Shirley M. Gordon (John, Sr.), Barbara M. McQueen, Cheraw, SC and Robin Stroud, Raleigh, NC; and a brother, David Chapman (Jewell), Mitchellville, MD. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Kathy ‘Denise’ Turnage Conrad

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Kathy “Denise” Turnage Conrad, age 61, entered into rest on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. Graveside Services were held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2017 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Mrs. Conrad was born May 10, 1955 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Wade and Newell Graves Turnage. She was a former employee of Carolina Restaurant and Cuddy Farms. Mrs. Conrad was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Denise was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Conrad; 5 sisters, Patsy Turnage, Jane Wallace, Sharon Garris, Sara Arant, and Judy Suggs; 1 brother, Wayne Turnage; and brother-in-law, Larry Melton.
Survivors include her children, Charles R. Melton of Chesterfield, SC and Lori M. McLain of Columbia, SC; 5 grandchildren, Jonathan Mark Donahue, Jr., Brayden McLain, Blake McLain, Brandy McLain, and Bella McLain; 2 sisters, Karen Melton and Linda (Robert)
Davis both of Chesterfield, SC; brothers, Ronnie (Gertrude) Turnage of Chesterfield, SC, Joseph (Kathy) Turnage of Pageland, SC, and Steve (Sandra) Turnage of Cheraw, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Juliette White Douglass

CHERAW - Juliette White Douglass, 82, died Monday, March 13, 2017. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late Miles T. and Maggie I. Deese White. She was the widow of Jack Douglass. She was a member of North Cheraw Baptist Church. Mrs. Douglass gardening and working in her yard. She was a loving housewife with a big heart and was very compassionate by helping those in need.

Surviving is her son, Ronnie Douglass of Cheraw, SC, also many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also a son Jackie Douglass, a daughter, Donna Jean Douglass, brothers, George W. White, Claude White, M.T. White, Jr., Bill White, sisters, Myrtle Hewitt, Margaret W. Russ, Letha W. Thompson and Ollie W. Quick.

The family will receive friends 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Thursday, March 16, 2017 at North Cheraw Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 PM, Thursday, March 16, 2017 at North Cheraw Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
