Mrs. Lillian Bernell Clemmons
Jun 12, 1941 - Dec 5, 2014

Mrs. Lillian Bernell Clemmons was born in Marion, South Carolina on June 12, 1941. She was the oldest daughter of the late Mr. Jimmy and Mrs. Hazel Hemingway Graves. Lillian departed this earthly journey on December 5, 2014 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Lillian was educated in the public schools of Richland County. On December 2, 1959 Lillian married the late John Henry Clemmons of Columbia, South Carolina and to this union one daughter, Ms. Cynthia Clemmons was born. Lillian later moved to Brooklyn, New York where she lived for 36 years. In the early years of 2000, Lillian moved back to Columbia, South Carolina and began working for Kleen Care Cleaners.

Lillian was fun, outgoing, and full of love. She loved her family dearly and to those in her neighborhood she was known as "Mrs. Lill". Lillian found great joy in the grocery store, cooking and shopping for clothes.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lillian was preceded in death by seven siblings Jehovah Graves, Jimmy Graves, Jr., Robert Graves, Calvin Graves, Ora Graves, Preston Graves, and Mamie Lorick.

Lillian leaves to cherish her loving memories a daughter, Cynthia (Allen) Green, Columbia, SC; two grandsons, Randall Smalls and Paul (Dominique) Green; two great grandchildren; one devoted uncle, Jeremiah (Dorothy) Hemingway; two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Although she is no longer with us her loving spirit will forever live in our hearts. Sleep on mother and take your rest.

Virginia Davidson Horne

RUBY - Mrs. Virginia Davidson Horne, age 89, entered into rest on Saturday, December 31, 2016. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Thompson Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Ronnie Grizzle and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial following in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Horne was born February 17, 1927 in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late William Tell and Mary Rilla Moore Davidson. She was a graduate of Ruby High School class of 1944 and a faithful member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Horne was a retired employee of Caro-Knit - Ti-Caro, and was a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. She will be remembered most for her love of family, her Lord, and her Christian home.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, William Gettys Horne, Sr.; brothers, George P., Perry, Lee, Alvin, J.T., and Hazel Davidson; 2 sisters, Cleo Knight and Vera Graves; and her grandson, William Gettys “Will” Horne, III.

Survivors include her 2 sons, William Gettys (Cynthia) Horne, Jr., and Aaron Horne, both of Ruby, SC; daughter, Wendy (Jamie) Hatchell of Florence, SC; sisters-in-law, Barbara Davidson and Mary Jo Davidson both of Chesterfield, SC and Pauline Davidson of High Point, NC.

The family cordially requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Horne to Thompson Creek Baptist Church, “Meals on Wheels Ministry” 3403 Wamble Hill Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Helen Burr Melton

CHERAW - Helen Burr Melton, 72, died Monday, January 2, 2017. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, she was a daughter of the late George W. Burr and Rillie Burr Gulledge. She was the widow of Jack Melton. She enjoyed reading (murder mystery books), flowers and planting a garden. She was a great cook and made homemade cakes and the best biscuits ever.

Surviving is her daughter, Ann Butler Parker of Wallace, SC, grandchildren, Chris Robinson, Carrie Robinson Wilson and Aaron Melton, two great grandchildren, a sister, Brenda Burr Modlin of Myrtle Beach, SC and a brother Grady Burr of Concord, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above, a son, Michael Melton, and brothers Avery Burr, Kenneth Burr, Donnie Burr, LJ Burr, and Pete Atkinson.

The family received friends 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Friday, January 6, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A memorial service was held 3:00 PM, Friday, January 6, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Duane B. Smith

CHERAW - Duane Burton Smith, 88, died Saturday, January 7, 2017. Born in Bangor, PA he was a son of the late Burton and Anna Jennings Smith. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran and was stationed in Panama. He was a graduate of Bangor High School and Churchman’s Business College. Mr. Smith was retired from The Cooper Group (Weller) after 38 years with the company as Controller. He enjoyed reading, golf, woodworking, travel and working on his computer.

Surviving is his wife (married 65 years) Dolores Irene Ott Smith of Cheraw, SC, sons, Ronald Smith of Cheraw, SC, Randal (Natalie) Smith of Sumter, SC, a brother, Blaine (Shirley) Smith of Pen Argyl, PA, a sister, Ann Albert of Bath, PA, grandchildren, Robert Smith and Michelle Smith.

The family will receive friends 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Burial with military honors will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Hannah J. Tucker

CHERAW - Hannah J. Tucker, 86, died Thursday, January 5, 2017. Born in Jefferson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Wallie and Dora Freeman. She was a retired store owner.

Surviving is her daughters, Teresa T. Tucker, Becky R. Sox both of Society Hill, SC, Sarah F. Tucker of Darlington, SC, Sisters Mary Kelly of Cheraw, SC and Margaret Jutiner of Walterboro, SC.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, also brothers, Horace Freeman, James Freeman, Floyd Freeman and a sister, Lillie Mae Barfield.

The family will receive friends 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Monday, January 9, 2017 at Harris Creek Baptist Church, Society Hill, SC.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Harris Watson

CHERAW - Dorothy “Dot” Harris Watson, 90, died Saturday, January 7, 2017. Born in Fayetteville, NC she was the daughter of the late Wade Hobson and Margaret Elizabeth Boseman Harris. She was the widow of Tyler Bennett Watson. She was a Graduate of Laurel Hill High School and earned a BS in Nursing from Duke University School of Nursing. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others as the first Director of Nurses at Cheraw Manor Nursing Facility and later retired with Chesterfield County Health Department. Mrs. Watson was a member of Cheraw First Baptist where she served in the WMU, the Henrietta Isgett Sunday School Class and for many years as Chairman on the bereavement committee. She enjoyed reading, sports and was an avid Duke Basketball fan. She was indeed a beloved Mother to four children, Grandma to five grandchildren and Mimi to five great grandchildren.

She is survived by a family who loved her dearly which include her children Margaret (Roger) Wolfe of Cheraw, Ronnie (Sandi) Watson of Cheraw, and Wade (Debbie) Watson of Chesapeake, VA. Grandchildren; Ben (Lauri) Watson of Summerville, Lauren (Paisley) Watson of Chesterfield, Randy (Kim) Watson of Bennettsville, and Alex Watson of Cheraw. Great grandchildren include Drew Copeland of Cheraw, Brantley and Tyler Watson of Summerville, SC, George Paisley, III, and Connor Watson of Chesterfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, a daughter, Janice Watson, a granddaughter, Allison Leanne Toole, and two brothers; Roger M. Harris and Gene A. Harris.

Henry Sims Graves

PAGELAND – Mr. Henry Sims Graves, 80, of Pageland, South Carolina, went to be with his Lord on Monday, May 15, 2017, while surrounded by his loving family.

Henry was born on September 23, 1936, in Chesterfield County to the late Samuel Major Graves and Thelma Sims Graves. Henry grew up in the Pageland Community where he later met and married, Mrs. Ruth Estridge Graves. He was the owner and operator of Graves Plumbing and Septic which he helped many families in Pageland and the surrounding areas. Henry was an avid hunter and fisherman. He served as a Sergeant in the National Guard as well as being a member of High Point Baptist Church as well as being a former Deacon of White Plains Baptist Church and a member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #58. In addition to his parents, Henry is preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara C. Graves, brother, Samuel Major Graves Jr., sisters Ruth Towery and Mettie Graves.

Those left to celebrate and remember his life include his loving wife, Ruth Estridge Graves of Pageland, South Carolina, sons, Mike Graves (Rhonda) of Pageland, South Carolina and Jeff Graves (Heidi) of Camden, South Carolina, daughter, Cathy Bradford of Pageland, South Carolina, grandchildren, David Graves, Ryan Graves, Bennett Graves, Anna Katherine Graves, Mary Claire Graves, Crystal Nicholson (Ryan) and Michael Bradford, great-grandchildren, Hannah Nicholson, Natalyn Nicholson, Patrick Nicholson and Rhett Nicholson.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at High Point Baptist Church with Pastor Rodney Nicholson officiating. Burial followed at White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family received friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at High Point Baptist Church Family Life Center, 16 High Point Church Road, Pageland, South Carolina 29728.

Kenneth Newton Johnson

WALLACE – Kenneth Newton Johnson, 73, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 14, 2017. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Leo Johnson and Hattie Freeman Short. He was a retired supervisor from Marley Electric Heating of Bennettsville, SC. He attended the Hartsville Church of God. He loved hunting, working with leather, guns and knives. He dearly loved his family and spent as much time with them as possible.

Surviving is his wife Mary Johnson of 30 years, sons, Kenneth Johnson Jr. of Wallace, SC, David Carlton Johnson of Wallace, SC, a daughter, Linda Carol Thomas, brothers, James A. Johnson of Sumter, SC, Albert Johnson (Kathy) of Burlington, NC, sisters, Catherine Williams of Sumter, SC, and Jean Kimrey (Donald) of Hampton, VA, two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC. Burial followed at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Jonas Goodman ‘Mr. Pete’ Owens

CHERAW - Jonas Goodman “Mr. Pete” Owens, 95, (formally of Cordele, GA) died Thursday, May 18, 2017. Born in Edgecombe County, NC, he was the son of the late Jonas Goodman and Martha Norville Owens and the widower of Mary Elaine Wells Owens. He was retired from Moore Brothers (Department Stores) with over 55 years of service. He had served as the Chairman of the Board for Chesterfield General Hospital, also as Chairman of Northeastern Technical College (Chesterfield-Marlboro Tec). He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC where he served as Church Treasurer and as Chairman of the Administrative Board. Mr. Pete was a member of the SC Retail Merchants Association and the Malloy Foundation Board. He volunteered as a reading tutor at Cheraw Primary School. He enjoyed fishing, golf and spending time with his family.

Surviving is his son, David (Julia) Owens of Eatonton, GA, a daughter, Susan O. (Alex) Stripling of Cordele, GA, grandchildren, Kelly K. (Eric) Dusa of Cheraw, SC, Jeff (Emily) Keeney of Columbia, SC, Jay Owens of Seattle, WA, great grandchildren, Hollis Dusa and Mary Charlotte Dusa both of Cheraw, SC and Hayden Keeney of Columbia, SC.

The family received friends 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM, Saturday, May 20, 2017, in the Parlor of First United Methodist, Cheraw, SC.

A memorial service was held 3:00 PM, Saturday, May 20, 2017, at First United Methodist, Cheraw, SC.

Michael Otis Pierce

CHERAW – Michael Otis Pierce, 63, died Saturday, May 6, 2017. Born in Yokohama, Japan, he was a son of Margaret Curry Pierce of Cheraw, SC, and the late Marion Eugene Pierce. He was a member of North Cheraw Baptist Church. Michael played football at Cheraw High School and was a graduate of Cheraw High Class of 1974. Mike loved his family and had been a devoted caregiver to his mother since 2005. Halloween was his favorite time of the year because he knew his sister Brenda would load him down with Reese's bars and Mr. Goodbars. In fact, Mike loved anything sweet, especially his mother's chocolate layer cakes. Always up to date on current events, Mike enjoyed watching the news and sports of all kinds. He was a loyal Cheraw Braves fan. Boxing was his favorite sport. When he and his brothers were young, their father taught all of them how to box in the field beside their house. In addition, Mike had a special love and compassion for animals. His loving care allowed Dixie and Little Bit, his two dogs, to live long, happy lives. He leaves behind his beloved Red Ring -Necked Parrot, Yelton.

Surviving is his mother listed above, a daughter, Melissa Jones Dover of Pickens, SC, brothers, Donald E. Pierce of Waynesboro, PA, Randy O. Pierce of Cheraw, SC, Chris O. Pierce of Myrtle Beach, SC, sisters, Brenda Joyce Lampley of Myrtle Beach, SC, Pamela Ann Byrd of Myrtle Beach, one grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father listed above, also, brothers, Kenneth W. Pierce and Larry C. Pierce.

Jessie ‘Phyllis’ M. Shaw

WALLACE - Jessie "Phyllis" M. Shaw, 76, died Thursday, May 18, 2017. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late Henry Freeman and Rosa Lee Jacobs. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. She enjoyed to read, watch TV, travel and loved spending time with family. She was an avid Elvis Presley fan.

Surviving is her husband of 64 years, Henry “Buster” Shaw of Wallace, SC, sons, James “Jimmy” Shaw of Wallace, SC, Jerry (Twila) Lee Shaw of Wallace, SC, Tommy (Cathy) Shaw of Rockingham, NC, Randy (Tracy) Shaw of Rockingham, NC, a daughter, Sarah (Mike) Carter of Cheraw, SC, sisters, Linda Taylor of Bennettsville, SC, Myrtle Kifer of Bennettsville, SC, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, also brothers, Ray Jacobs, John Jacobs, sisters, Mildred Hall and Jo Ann Turnage Wetzel.

Paul Edward Walters

PAGELAND – Mr. Paul Edward Walters, 66, of Pageland, South Carolina went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 19, 2017, while in Pineville, NC, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Paul Edward Walters was born on December 11, 1950, in Darlington County, SC, to the late Leavie James Walters and Willene Blackwell Walters. He later met and united in marriage to Glenda Walters. He loved to work in his greenhouse. Paul was an avid fisherman, hunter and Carolina Panthers Fan. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where he was a past deacon. He was the President of the A & W Hunting Club in the Angelus area.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas W. Walters and Roger Walters.

Those left to celebrate and remember his life include his loving wife, Glenda Walters, sons, Chad Walters of Pageland, SC, Robbie Gainey of Hartsville, and Howard Gainey of Darlington, SC, Daughter, Angela Gainey of Pageland, SC, brothers, Willard Walters of Forest City, NC and Melvin Walters of Bennettsville, SC, sisters, Alice Catoe of Hartsville, SC, Patricia Carter of Hartsville, SC and Phyllis Johnson of Hartsville, SC, Grandchildren, Gavin Walters, Noah Blalock, Skylar Walters, Gabriel Walters, Brandon Gainey, Chelsea Gainey, Brittany Gainey, Lisa Gainey, Jennifer Gainey, Star Gainey, Makayla Gainey, Kyle Consiglio, Aiden Gainey, Heather Elliott, Christy Elliott and Dylan Elliott and numerous great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with Pastor Ronnie Collins and Dr. Joel Dale officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Baumgartner Funeral Home of Pageland, 708 West McGregor Street, Pageland, South Carolina 29728.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of One’s Choice.
