Mary Kittrell Snipes -- Cope

Mary Kittrell Snipes, 73, of 4653 Cannon Bridge Road, Cope, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at Canaan Baptist Church in Cope, with the Rev. Charles Bradley and the Rev. Don Smoak officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

Active Pallbearers will be Acia Lee Strickland, Larry Cook, Rickey Kittrell, Tommy McMichael, Craig Hughes, and Manning Strickland.

Mrs. Kittrell was born March 29, 1933, in Florence, the daughter of the late Lee Kittrell and the late Mamie Viola Dempsey Kittrell. She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church and was retired from Hamricks in St. Matthews. She loved going to the mountains and Harrah’s Casino and watching Court TV. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Hattie Lou Antley, Frances McMichael and Maude Cook; and two brothers, Lee “Bubbie” Kittrell and Riley Kittrell.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Johnnie “Red” and Lynn Murray of Cope; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda “Susie” and Randy Bowen of Norway, Donna and Gene Murray of Moncks Corner, Tracy and Timmy Almy of Cope; six grandchildren, Tony Bowen of Norway, Chris Mackay of Moncks Corner, Carrie Miller of Conway, Adam Murray and Brian Almy, both of Cope, and Kayla Bowen of Norway; two great-grandchildren, Dakota and McKenzie Miller of Conway; two sisters, Hazel Strickland of North and Clara Sweatman of Cope; and one brother, Malcolm Kittrell of North.

Friends may call at the residence of Tracy and Timmy Almy, 4653 Cannon Bridge Road, Cope and at the funeral home.

Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210-1790.

Dr. Paul E. Childs -- Cordova

Monday, November 13, 2006

Memorial services for Dr. Paul E. Childs of Cordova will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, November 13, at Thompson Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Steve M. Singletary
May 16, 2016

EUTAWVILLE - Steve M. Singletary, 74, of Eutawville, husband of Mic Singletary, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Sandridge Baptist Church with Rev. Owen Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chad Hill, Shane Saulisbury, Lance Saulisbury, Richard Cummings, Rhett Cummings, Joe Ervin, Robert Rhame III, and Robbie Pottharst.

Steve, or “Slim” as he was known, was born in Holly Hill, a son of the late Stephen Frederick Singletary and Mae Grooms Singletary. He attended Holly Hill High School and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a nuclear pipefitter in Shop 56. An avid outdoorsman he enjoying hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Steve was preceded in death by a son, Stephen M. Singletary II.

Surviving are his wife, Mic of Eutawville; a daughter, Penny S. Hill (Bennett) of Lebanon; a son, Huey Mitchum of Daytona Beach, Fla.; brothers, Rembert Singletary (Betty) and Belvin Singletary, all of Holly Hill; grandchildren, Shanna Saulisbury (Shane) of Lebanon, Chad Hill (Ashley) of Lebanon, Ashley Fisher (Steven) of West Virginia, and Kayce Singletary of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Lance Saulisbury, Kyler Fisher, Parker Fisher, Abbie Saulisbury, and Holden Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at home in Eutawville from 4 to 7 p.m. this Wednesday evening.

Memorials may be made to Sandridge Baptist Church, 4677 State Road, Ridgeville, SC 29472.

Ms. Macy Ezell Cooke, ORANGEBURG

Ms. Macy Ezell Cooke, born on Nov. 4, 1909, in Spartanburg County, was a daughter of the late Florence Louise Clement and Virgil Dean Ezell. She was married for almost 55 years to the late James Vassie (J.V.) Cooke.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

She graduated from Winthrop College with a B.A. in education in 1933. She also attended several universities for continuing education courses throughout the years. She taught public school for more than 30 years. When the schools were told to integrate in the ’60s in Hartsville, she volunteered to transfer to Washington Street Elementary School to help make the integration process go smoothly. She was then named teacher of the year in Darlington County. She taught by example, at home as well as in school, as her mother taught her, that “a good name is to be chosen over great riches.” Teaching children about reading books was her special love.

She was active in her church, teaching Sunday school, and participating in the Missionary Society activities. She was very supportive of all Boy Scout activities, as the wife of a Boy Scout executive for 20 years. She served as a volunteer for many activities, the latest as a librarian at The Methodist Oaks, her place of residence.

Surviving are daughters, Annette Cooke Stokes, and son-in-law, Gordon Stokes of Lago Vista, Texas, Salley Cooke Christian and son-in-law, James D. Christian of Columbia, Judy Cooke McMaster and son-in-law, John G. McMaster III of Columbia; her only surviving son, James Vassie Cooke III and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Camp of Asheville, N.C.; three granddaughters, three grandsons, two step-grandsons, and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews.

She lost one son, John Dean, as an infant in 1954. Six brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

The family request that memorials be made to The College of Charleston Foundation, c/o Macy Ezell Cooke Endowment, The College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George St., Charleston, SC 29424 (843-953-3889); the J. V. Cooke Scholarship Fund, North Greenville College, P.O. Box 1892, Tigerville, SC 29688; or to The Guardian Angel Fund at The Methodist Oaks, P.O. Box 116, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

Johnny L. Fogle -- ST. MATTHEWS

Funeral services for Johnny L. Fogle, of 159 Morningside Drive, St. Matthews, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with the Rev. D. Edward Chaney officiating. Burial will be in the Rockhill AME Church Cemetery in Vance.

Mr. Fogle died Thursday, Nov.16.

Friends may call at the residence and at Williams Funeral Home of Elloree.

Daniel Amos Austin -- ORANGEBURG

Monday, November 20, 2006

Funeral services for Daniel Amos Austin, 76, of 1128 Hampton Road, SE, Orangeburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at Warren Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Willard S. Sabb officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

The casket will be open for viewing one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Austin died Saturday, Nov. 18, at his residence after an extended illness.

He was born April 28, 1930, in Orangeburg, a son of Esau and Maggie Guinyard Austin. He received his education in the Orangeburg County school system. At an early age, he joined Warren Chapel Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his health failed. He was a member of the Gospel Choir. He retired from Stone Container after 52 years of service.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Adell P. Austin of the home; three daughters, Dannie (Dr. Robert) Mays, Rosalee (Thomas C.) Houser Jr. and Jo Ann Austin, all of Orangeburg; one son, Esau (Margaret) Austin of Bowman; one brother, Romeo Austin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Lizzie Mae Jones of Lithonia, Ga.; one aunt, Mary Lawson of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille P. Guinyard and Elsie H. Palm, all of Orangeburg; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at E. T. Jones Funeral Home in Cope.

Friends may call at the residence of his wife, and at E. T. Jones Funeral Home of Cope.

Jessie J. Williams -- Orangeburg

Mr. Jessie J. Williams, 61, of 450 Jamison Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Bythewood Funeral Home.
