Mrs. Reba Wise Dixon -- ORANGEBURG

Funeral services for Mrs. Reba Wise Dixon, 73, of 465 Old Belleville Road, will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Congaree Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Golden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Dixon died Saturday, Dec. 9, at her residence.

Memorials may be made to Congaree Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 299 Old Belleville Road, St. Matthews, SC 29135 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sheila Kay Butler Martino, ST. GEORGE

Funeral services for Mrs. Sheila Kay Butler Martino, 58, of 552 Reeves Farm Road, St. George, will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at North Orangeburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Eddie Williams officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Jamison.

Active pallbearers will be Keith Bethea, Alex Gelzer, Quintin Collier, Joseph Thomas III, Daryl Phine, and Otis Johns. Honorary pallbearers will be the Class of 1966.

Mrs. Martino died Monday, Dec. 4, at The Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 30, 1948, the daughter of the late Anne C. Butler and Howard Pippens. She was a member of North Orangeburg United Methodist Church, where she was active until her health failed. She was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies from Claflin University in 1972. In 1974 she received a Certificate of Completion in Personal Management from LaSalle Extension University, Chicago, a Certificate of Completion in Early Childhood Development from New York Community College in 1979, and in 1994 she received a Master’s of Education in Counseling from South Carolina State University.

Sheila worked for Club Meteraian Travel Agency in Manhattan for a number of years. She returned to Orangeburg in 1981. She worked with Orangeburg County Needs and Disabilities Board, and the Miller F. Whittaker Library at South Carolina State University until her health forced her to retire in 2003. She was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and a number of community committees. Sheila’s greatest joy was to share God’s word with family and friends.

She was married to Willie Martino Sr., who preceded her in death in 2003. She was most recently preceded in death by her mother, Anne C. Butler; a son, Willie Martino Jr.; and one aunt, Artha Mae Kennerly.

Survivors include one daughter, Cecilia Martino of St. George; two sons, Byron Martino and Melvin Martino, both of St. George; two aunts; Mrs. Inez Butler and Mrs. Lucile Adams, both of Orangeburg; one uncle, Claflin J. Kennerly Jr. of Orangeburg; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Letitia Martino of St. George and Mrs. Brandy Martino of Palestine, Texas; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one special cousin, Tracy K. Thomas of Orangeburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Newton’s Funeral Home on Friday.

Howard D. Hayes -- Eutawville

Memorial services for Howard D. Hayes, 59, of 124 Tucker Road, Eutawville, will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel in Holly Hill, with the Rev. Buddy Locke officiating. Burial will be private.

Mr. Hayes died Saturday, November 11, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

He was born in Lake View, a son of the late Chester Hayes and Annie Bell Church Hayes. He was a retired state trooper from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Townsend Hayes of the home; daughters, Deborah “Sissy” Pacheco and Dorothy (Jenaro) Mendez, both of Eutawville; son, Howard D. “Doug” (Jennifer) Hayes Jr., of Moncks Corner; sisters, Lynnette Floyd, of Lake View and Jeannette Millin, of Chester; brother, Bobby Gene (Miriam) Hayes, of Lake View; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson.

The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Avinger Funeral Home of Holly Hill is in charge of arrangements.

The Rev. Gabriel Bowman Jr., BRANCHVILLE

Funeral services for the Reverend Gabriel Bowman Jr., 95, of 5676 Freedom Road, Branchville, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at St. Stephens Baptist Church in Branchville, with the Rev. Frances Rivers officiating. Burial will be in the Florence National Cemetery in Florence.

The Rev. Bowman Jr. died Tuesday, November 14, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg following a brief illness.

He was ushered into this world by God on January 28, 1911, in Branchville, a son of the late Gabriel Bowman Sr. and Mary Bowman. He was educated in the Orangeburg County public schools. At an early age, he attended St. Stephens Baptist Church, where in later years he moved to Philadelphia, Pa.

He was called to duty by the United States Army and was connected to the 589th division as a staff sergeant, where he received the victory medal of honor. After returning from the service, he was joined in holy matrimony to Leslie Cook Bowman, who preceded him in death. He later married Anna T. Brown Bowman, who he affectionately called “Sweets”, who faithfully stood by his side until the end.

He was affectionately known by his wife, Anna T. Bowman, as “Honey”. Rev. Bowman received a Divine call from God to be a faithful and dedicated servant of the Westside Church of God in Philadelphia, Pa., where he served as Pastor and assistant Pastor for 14 years. After living many years in the Philadelphia community, Gabriel decided that he wanted to come back to his home of Branchville, to be with his family.

Rev. Bowman served at Treadwell Street Church of God, now known as New Beginnings Church of God, where he held the position as Associate Pastor until his death.

Rev. Bowman leaves fond memories of his beloved and devoted wife, Anna T. Bowman and three step children, Odell Brown (Roxalyn), Deborah Brown Stevens, and Jason O. Brown, who preceded him in death; a devoted God-daughter, Juanita Muse, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; grandchildren, Dashawn Brown, Amanda Brown, Anita Brown, Jason and Malik; first cousins, Carrie Mae Bowman-Robinson, Dora Bowman Gaddis, Gloria Bowman McMillan; very close nephew, the Rev. Dr. Robert Lee Bowman (Flossie); great niece, Ivy Bowman Moore (Jerome) and a host of other relatives and friends.

A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, November 19, at Glover’s Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence and at Glover’s Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Mrs. Betty J. Reddick-Palmer, LAUDERHILLS, FLA.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty J. Reddick-Palmer, 62, of 2543 N.W. Forty-Ninth Ave., Lauderhills, Fla. will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at New Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1739 Amelia St., Orangeburg, with the Rev. Dr. Henry Smith officiating. Burial will be in Moses Temple Church Cemetery, North Road, Orangeburg.

The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Palmer died Thursday, Nov. 9, at Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She was born April 12, 1944, in Orangeburg, a daughter of James Reddick and the late Dorothy Reddick. She was educated in Orangeburg and Trenton, N.J., public school systems. Mrs. Palmer graduated from Mercer County College of Nursing. She was employed as a private duty nurse. As a committed and dedicated caretaker, Betty often traveled for extensive periods of time with her patients.

Upon the family's relocation, they established membership at First Born Church of God in Christ, where Betty continued her walk in faith. She later joined East Trenton Church of God, now known as Mill Hill Church of God in Trenton, N.J. While there, she served on the usher board and sang in the choir.

Betty was reunited with her high school sweetheart, Walter Palmer of Orangeburg. After a brief and fanciful courtship, they were married in September 1979.

In October 1979 Betty and Walter relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she continued her nursing career.

Survivors include her loving husband of 27 years, Walter Palmer of the home; father, James Reddick of Trenton, N.J..; two sisters, Edith Reddick-Miller of Tacoma, Wash. and Carol Reddick-Fowler (Willie) of Rosewell, Ga.; one aunt, Gladys Johnson of Orangeburg; two very close friends, Patricia Mitchell and Shirley Wright, both of Trenton, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends may call at the residence of her aunt, Gladys Johnson, 555 Sunnyside St., Orangeburg or at Simmons Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
