James C. ‘Sonny’ Murray, BAMBERG

Funeral services for James C. “Sonny” Murray, 68, of 356 Hadwin Road, Bamberg, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, in the Chapel of Carroll Mortuary of Bamberg. Burial will be in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Murray died Monday, Jan. 1, in Saturn Nursing and Rehab Center, Charlotte.

He was born Jan. 20, 1938, in Bamberg to the late Hannibal Jackson Murray Sr. and the late Ethel Breland Murray. He was the youngest of 10 children. Sonny was educated in the Bamberg County school system. At an early age he joined Bethel AME Church, which is now known as Bethel United Methodist Church. As a young man he moved to New York City, where he met and married the former Betty Leslie. Sonny was a retired truck driver, working for Glenwood Masonry Co. for over 30 years. After returning to his childhood home, he returned to his favorite pastime of raising hogs and other animals.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Murray-Parker of Charlotte; three granddaughters, Iesha, Aquira and Eleah, all of Charlotte; two sisters, Lois Thomas of Orangeburg and Myrtle Murray-Brown of Forestville, Md.

Friends may call at the residence.

Carroll Mortuary of Bamberg will be in charge of services.

Edward Kinard, BAMBERG

Edward Kinard, 83, of 1442 Hunters Chapel Road, Bamberg, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 at the Bamberg County Hospital.

Funeral plans will be announced by Johnson-Dash Funeral Home of Bamberg.

Mrs. Mamie Davis Altman, ORANGEBURG

Mrs. Mamie Davis Altman, 102, of 575 Stonewall Jackson Blvd., Orangeburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Laurel Baye Health Care Center in Orangeburg.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating.

Ms. Altman was born Feb. 26, 1904, in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late Eddie Davis and Mary McMichael Davis. She was a member of Rivelon Baptist Church. She was married to the late Jacob E. Altman.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Herman and Grace Altman of Orangeburg; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Altman of Charlotte; 26 grandchildren; many, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Wilma Jackson of Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Altman, 885 Rivelon Road, Orangeburg, and at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sandra L. Walker

Mrs. Sandra L. Walker, 66, of Eutawville, wife of Harvey D. Walker, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at The Hospice of Charleston.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, in Avinger Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Brien and the Rev. John Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Eutawville Cemetery.

Mrs. Walker was born Oct. 1, 1940, in Norfolk, Va. a daughter of the late Thomas L. Sawyer and Kittie Hobbs Patterson. She was a retired secretary. Mrs. Walker was a member of the First Baptist Church in Holly Hill. She was on the board of directors of the Crisis Center in Eutawville. She was a charter member of the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Board of the Eutawville Fire Department. Mrs. Walker was a former member of the Eutawville Lions Club and a former guardian ad litem.

Surviving are her husband of the home; stepmother, Una J. Sawyer of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Patricia (Floyd) Hayes of Norfolk, Va.; a niece, Cindy (Don) Digner of Norfolk, Va.; nephews, Jason Hayes of Orlando, Fla., and Brian Hayes of Florida; and a great-niece, Katherine Digner of Norfolk, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, Hospice Center, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.

John Emmet Gamble -- Bamberg

John Emmet Gamble, 73, of 3100 Goose Bay Road, Bamberg, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Cooner Funeral Home Chapel in Bamberg, with the Rev. Donnie Delk officiating. Burial will be in Bamberg County Memory Gardens.

Mr. Gamble was born Oct. 12, 1933, in Kingstree, a son of the late Leon Gamble and the late Myrtle Smoak Collins. He was married to the late Patricia Bunch Gamble. He was a member of Hunters Chapel Baptist Church and was retired from Savannah River Plant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Lynn Gamble Parker of Bamberg and Elizabeth Ann Gamble Searson of Bamberg; one sister and her husband, Carol Ann and Sonny Bunch of Bamberg; and four grandchildren, Lauren, John, Zachery and Matthew.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, prior to the funeral.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the residence of Carol Ann and Sonny Bunch, Highway 78 West, Bamberg.

Marion Smith, HOLLY HILL

Funeral services for Mr. Marion Smith, 49, of 109 Tentill Lane, Holly Hill, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at Eutawville Community Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jerome Clark officiating. Burial will be in Joiner Cemetery.

He died Sunday, Dec. 10, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Mr. Marion “Pipe” Smith was born April 12, 1957, in Harleyville to the late Milton Jr. and Mrs. Rosella Smith. He graduated from Ridgeville High School and at an early age, joined Mount Zion AME Church. He met and married Mary Mack and to this union two children were born. He was employed with New South Construction for the past 17 years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mrs. Mary M. Smith; a daughter, Ms. Lakeshia Smith; a son, Jermaine Smith, all of Holly Hill; one brother, William Smith of Orangeburg; two sisters, Mrs. Mirion Moorer of Orangeburg and Mrs. Mildred Grant of Holly Hill; one uncle and two aunts; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Mack; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
