McKinley C. Whitener
Retired Carolina Bridge employee
WHITMIRE - McKinley C. Whitener, 62, of 108 T Duckett Ave., Whitmire, died Aug. 20, 2002 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. A native of Newberry County, he was the son of the late Edward and Melissa Dawkins Whitener. He was a member of Seekwell Baptist Church, a member of Bright Star Lodge 222 and was retired after 42 years at Carolina Bridge Co. Inc. in Orangeburg.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mattie Lee Whitener. Surviving are three sons, Kelvin Whitener of the home, Leon Whitener of Newberry and Laval T. Epps of Whitmire; three daughters, Verna Michelle (James ) Holmes and Tena Epps, both of Union, N.J.; and Quanda Hopkins of Whitmire; two sisters, Nannie Bell Whitener of Rock Hill and Reba (Wilmer) Sanders of Charlotte; N.C.; two brothers, Wilson and Odell (Mary) Whitener, both of Whitmire; 15 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Seekwell Baptist Church in Maybinton. Visitation will be Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Hunter Funeral Home, Whitmire, has charge of arrangements.

Thelma W. Wix
Retired from Union Mill

Thelma Louise Wade Wix, 77, widow of Joe A. Wix Jr., of 740 Lakeside Drive, died Aug. 21, 2002 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Wix was born in Union on Feb. 27, 1925, a daughter of the late Linder and Gertrude Byrant Wade. She was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant, and was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Terri and Cecil Stephens of Union and Lou Ann and Ronnie McGee of Myrtle Beach; a son, Joe M. Wix of Union; three sisters, Virginia Smith, Lucille Baber and Murial Mitchell, all of Union; seven grandchildren, Jeff Roberts, Brad Roberts, Danna Dowdy, Angela Eshleman, Melissa Whelchel, reared in the home; Amy Hall and Shane Wix; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wix was predeceased by a grandson, Allen Wix; a sister, Eva Moody; and two brothers, Roy Wade and Linder Wade.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ottaray Baptist Church by Rev. Bobby Crocker and Rev. Jack Bratton. Burial will be at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Walter McKeown, Neil McKeown, Jonathan Adams, Curtis Plexico, Stanley Moody and Steve Whelchel.

Members of the Ladies Sunday School Class at Ottaray Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Ottaray Baptist Church, 200 Lowe St., Union.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Stephens, 660 Brown's Creek Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rev. Frank Inman
Retired Baptist minister

Rev. Ebenezer Franklin Inman, 79, of 212 Seigler Road, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at 3:35 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a period of declining health. Inman was born in Union on July 4, 1923, a son of the late George I. and Mamie Vaughn Inman. He served as minister of Fairforest Baptist Church from 1950 until his retirement in May 1997.

He was a graduate of Union High School, North Greenville Junior College, Furman University and the South-western Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He taught one year at Long Creek Academy during which time he pastored Salem Baptist Church in Santuck from 1949 to 1950. He served on the boards of North Greenville College, Anderson College, Baptist Hospitals of South Carolina and he served on the Salvation Army Board Inman's.

Survivors are a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and George Chambers of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, James Hay Fant Inman Sr. and Beuna Inman, of Union; four nieces, Sarah E. Lewis, Janie I. Hoover, Kathy Jo Chambers and Mamie E. Bailey; four nephews, Torance J. Inman, Ralph E. Inman, Julian Bobby Eaves and G.I. Inman; and a special friend, Mrs. L.O. (Bertie) Belue. Rev. Inman was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters, J.C. Inman, Torance T. Inman, Sam E. Inman,. G.I. Inman, Ralph Inman, Nellie Eaves Roberts and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Aulbrey Calvert, the Rev. Warren Jones, the Rev. Curt Bradford and the Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bennie Kershaw, Jimmy Chastain, Don Bolton, Tony Gault, Marty Phillips, Carl Smith, Donnie Vinson, Charles Tabor, Gerald Sewell, Paul Sanders, Emslie Earl Foster and Stanley Hodge.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 3:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Ministers of the Union County Baptist Association, present and former members of the Union Salvation Army Board, associates of North Greenville College, Dr. Jeff Craft, Dr. Robert Yannetti, Dr. Kenneth Hill, former members of the Union County Ministerial Association, Freddie McAbee, Dudley Lawson and Burel Hawkins.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30. The family is at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Chambers, 212 Seigler Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Deacon Willie Jeter
Whitmire native

CHARLOTTE Deacon Willie Jeter, 74, of Charlotte, died Aug. 21, 2002 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Sunday at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Pineville, N. C. at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday from 1 p. m. until the time of service.

Mr. Jeter, a native of Whitmire, retired after years of service with the Charlotte/Mecklenburg School System. He was active in his community, and was appointed President of the Wilmore Neighborhood Association. During his leadership the Wilmore Day Celebration and Parade were initiated. His most significant involvements were with his church, and with his family.

At an early age Mr. Jeter joined Zion A. M. E. Zion Church in Charlotte and later joined Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Pineville where he served on the Deacon's Board for over 50 years. He also served as superintendent of the Sunday School Department, advisor to the church choirs, a member of The Brotherhood, the Laymen's Board, and as a member of the Oak Grove Hymn Choir.

For a short time, he was also a member of the 'Together As One' Hymn Choir in Rock Hill where he was given the opportunity to record a selection on their first Hymn Choir Recording, entitled, 'It Won't Ever Run Dry'. He enjoyed spending time with his family, sharing experiences with young people, participating in community affairs, and cooking Sunday morning breakfast.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Jeter is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kay Frances Jeter; four daughters, Ethel Potts (Robert) Linda Walton (Henry), Flora Hopkins (Reginald), and Glendora Sadler; a son, Marvin Jeter; 10 grandchildren; a brother, James Jeter (Katie) and a sister, Clorine Morrow; nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and a host of friends. King's Funeral Home of Charlotte is in charge of arrangements.

Jennie C. Scott
Union native

RIVER RIDGE, La. Virginia (Jennie) Carnell Scott, 82, died Aug. 16, 2002, at 6:22 p.m. in River Ridge, La., following complications of myeloid leukemia. Mrs. Scott was born and raised in Union. She was a retired interior designer and has worked with Forest Davidson Interiors in New Orleans, La. before starting her own business (JSI) in 1980.

She had developed expert knowledge of French and Italian antiques after extensively studying in these countries. She has always been active in the Episcopal Church life and particularly with the founding of All Saints Episcopal Church in River Ridge, La. Mrs. Scott was also very active with League of Women Voters and community civic associations.

She lived a happy and interesting life, sharing with whomever she knew, her happiness and generosity. She always felt that doing something for someone everyday was the way to live a life. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Gladin Scott Sr.; her children, Gladin Scott Jr. and Virginia S. Scott; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, River Ridge, La. Interment will be held at All Saints Episcopal Cemetery. A gathering will be held after services at All Saints Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to American Cancer Society or All Saints Memorial Fund preferred.

Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. at 43rd St., Metairie, La., has charge of arrangements.

Mabel G. Estes
Retired Clerk

Mabel Gault Estes, 68, of 307 Wessinger Dr., Lexington, wife of Joe Wiley (J.W.) Estes Sr., died at her home Aug. 26, 2002, at 1:20 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Estes was born in Union on April 19, 1934, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Mary Louise Bailey Gault. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a retired Clerk with the Lexington County Clerk of Court Office.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Joe Wiley Estes Jr. of Lexington; a sister and her husband, Rebecca E. and Marion Bishop of Union; and a brother and his wife, James Bobby and Shirley Gault of Union. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Tommy Bishop, Tommy Lybrand, Charles Estes, Donnie Bailey, Carol Bailey and Jimmy Estes.

The family will receive friends at the home, 307 Wessinger Dr., Lexington, tonight from 7-9 and at the funeral home Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the H.F. Mabry Center for Cancer Care, 1161 Cook Rd., Orangeburg, SC 29118. On Wednesday, the family will be at the home of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Bishop, 664 Lover's Lane Rd., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Max L. West
Retired John Graham Co. Manager

SPARTANBURG - Max L. West, 72, of 105 Ridgeway Road, Spartanburg, died Aug. 26, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of West Springs, he was the son of the late Annie West Lancaster and the husband of Barbara Calvert West. He was a Merchandise Manager for the John Graham Store, retiring after 43 years of service. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Mike West of Spartanburg, and Steven West and his wife, Bianca, of Greenville; a brother, Bert West of Jonesville; a sister, Dora Lawson of Siler City, N.C.; and two granddaughters, Stacie West of Jonesville and Annie West of Greenville. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kayla West.

Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. C.E. (Smoke) Kanipe and the Rev. Dr. Gareth D. Scott. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 2123 Lanford Road, Spartanburg, S.C., 29301, or to Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 7802 Highway 215, Pauline, S.C. 29374, or to the Alzheimer's Association, 555 John B. White Sr. Blvd., Spartanburg, S.C. 29306.

The family is at the home, 105 Ridgeway Road, Spartanburg. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Verona L. Beheler
Baptist

Verona Lawson Beheler, 83, of 103 Vision Drive, widow of Alton (Bo) Beheler, died at her home Aug. 28, 2002, at 5:45 a.m. Mrs. Beheler was born in Union on April 1, 1919, a daughter of the late Adolphus Clarence (Sugar Bill) Lawson and Mary Lillian Steen Lawson.

She was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mrs. Beheler was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters and their husbands, Sarah and Gene Tollison of Union, Margaret and John Ham of Travelers Rest and Lillian and Frank Shrader of Lockhart; three sons and their wives, Jimmy and Lee Beheler of Colorado, Stephen and Becky Beheler of Jonesville and Billy and Carol Beheler of the home; four grandsons reared in the home, Larry Burgess Jr. of Pacolet, Raymond Burgess of Union, Steven Beheler of Spartanburg and Earl Beheler of Union; and a number of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Carolyn Haney of Buffalo.

Mrs. Beheler was predeceased by two sons, Alton Earl Beheler and Ralph Wallace Beheler. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Johnny Burgess.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. After 1 p.m. today, the body will be at the home, 103 Vision Dr., Union, and will be placed in the funeral chapel at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
