KNIGHT, Mary
Mary R. Knight, 78, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at Mt. Pleasant. Born July 25, 1923, in Georgetown, S.C., she was the daughter of Willie Calhoun and Lula Rogers (nee Miller). Mrs. Knight was a graduate of Winyah High School, Georgetown and Rice Business College, Charleston. She was the first employee of the City of North Charleston and retired from the Business License Department. She was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church. Her husband Herman LaRue Knight, two brothers, Bill Rogers and Major Rogers, and sister Alma Prosser preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother, Roy Rogers, Georgetown; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Vernon Word, son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Cindy Knight, three grandchildren, Joey Word, Scott Knight, and Andy Knight; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Word and Joseph Word, all of James Island. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2002, in the chapel of MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 150 Wentworth St. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. The family will receive friends, Tuesday (today), January 15, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Lowcountry Chapter, P.O. Box 80459, Charleston, S.C. 29416-0459.

BROWN, Eloise
SUMTER, S.C. - Eloise Metts Brown, 79, widow of Eugene W. Brown, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at a local hospital.
Born in Pinopolis, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Henry Metts and the late Minnie Peagler Metts.
Mrs. Brown was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church and retired from Pioneer, Ltd. She was formerly employed by the National Bank of South Carolina Operations Center.
Surviving are three daughters, Maureen Newman and her husband Billy, Brenda McKinnon and her husband, Alvin "Skeeter," and Sheryl Goins and her husband Sam all of Sumter; three sisters, Eliza Harris, Ola Wadford and Elsie Locklair all of St. Stephen, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son; a sister, Carrie Kirby; and a brother, Charlie Metts.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. William F. Albert officiating.
Burial will be in the Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, William Anderson, Gregg Anderson, Walter Anderson, Jeffrey Newman, Eddie Newman, and Woody Newman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Maureen Newman, 2935 Bertha Circle.

DABBS, Frances
SUMTER, S.C. - Frances Stroman Dabbs, 70, wife of Guy McBride Dabbs, Jr., died Sunday, January 13, 2002, at a Florence health facility in Florence, S.C., after a lengthy illness.
Born in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Charles Stroman and Mary Ella Fairey Stroman.
Mrs. Dabbs was a member of Salem Black River Presbyterian Church. She attended Winthrop College. She was the former treasurer of the Sumter Junior Welfare League and a former Sunday School teacher and choir member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sumter. She was the former owner and operator of Pineland Plantation Golf Course for 25 years. She was a member of the Sumter Art Association, and a member of the Sumter County Easter Seal Board where she served as Secretary.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; two sons, Guy M. Dabbs, III, of Conyers, Ga., Brett C. Dabbs of Socastee, S.C.; one daughter, Lisa Dabbs Crouse of Alpharetta, Ga.; one brother, Arthur Charles Stroman of Orangeburg; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church with Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.
Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Furman Dabbs, IV, Kyle Christenbury, John Stroman, Reese Dabbs, and Mac Waggett.
The family will receive friends at the home of Martha Dabbs Greenway following the services.

POPESON, Julia
Julia Marie Popeson, 82, died on the afternoon of Sunday, January 13, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The relatives and friends of Julia Marie Popeson are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday, in Christ Our King Catholic Church, at 10 o'clock. Friends are invited to call from 6 until 8 p.m., Wednesday evening, at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Julia was born on February 13, 1919, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Vincent and Mae Bauer Hesler. She had worked at McCafferty Ford and later at the Sandpiper Craft Shop in the Trenton area. An artist, she had painted most of her life.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, George T. Popeson of Mt. Pleasant, her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Fred Wszolek of Mt. Pleasant, her daughter, Pamela Popeson of New York City and her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Joanne Popeson of Linwood, N.J. Six grandchildren, one great-grandson, her sister, Marie Grafenstine of Croydon, Pa., and her brother, Vincent Hesler of Levittown, Pa.

Mr. Smith was born July 25, 1930, in Clarksburg, W.Va., the son of the late Albert Kirk and Leora McAfee Smith. He was a veteran in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Smith attended Cathedral of Praise. He retired from the trucking industry after 42 years and was currently employed with Steve Hill Construction.
Surviving are his wife of Ladson, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Sarah Smith of North Charleston, S.C.; daughter, Paulette Foley of Goose Creek, S.C.; sister, Linda Weaver of Leesburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Lauren Smith of North Charleston, S.C., Alissa Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and Zack Foley of Goose Creek, S.C. He was preceded in death by a son, Edward Smith and a brother, James K. Smith.

CACIOPPO, Theresa
Entered into eternal rest on the evening of January 13, 2002, Theresa Jeanne Manno Cacioppo, widow of Dr. Joseph J. Cacioppo. Residence, Johns Island, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Mass, Thursday, January 17, 2002, at 10 o'clock in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2545 Bohicket Road, Johns Island. An inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Charles Cemetery, in Pinelawn, N.Y.
Mrs. Cacioppo was born May 19, 1909, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Frank Manno and Josephine Montana Manno.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Pezzullo and her husband, Joseph of Kiawah Island, S.C.; two sisters, Constance Maenza and Frances Perry, both of Long Island, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Dr. Christopher Pezzullo and his wife Nancy, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Tracy Valladares and her husband, Steven of Lewisville, N.C., and Allison Pezzullo of Bloomfield, Conn.; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Anna, Alessandra and Gabriella.

BIRD, Harry
WALTERBORO - United States Navy GMM1 (ret.) Harry C. Bird, Jr., 72, of Jefferies Highway, Walterboro, died Sunday January 13, 2002, at his residence after and extended illness.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday, January 17, 2002, with full military honors at the Beaufort National Cemetery, with the Reverend James Day officiating.
Mr. Bird was born May 2, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio, and was a son of the late Harry John Bird and Hazel vonSaunders Bird. He was retired Naval Base Policeman with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He served in the United States Navy for twenty-one years and retired as a Gunners' Mate Missile Man First Class. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam War, and was stationed on the Navasota for six years and received nine battle stars while in Korea. He was a plank owner on the USS Blandy, the USS Parsons, the USS Yarnell, and the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the First Christian Church, a member of the Fleet Reserve, a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association, and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Surviving are his wife of forty-two-years- Yvonne Crosby Bird, three sons and their wives- Thomas and Frances Carter of Walterboro, Daniel C. and Maryann Bird of Walterboro, and Captain Harry and Rhonda Bird of Charleston. Two daughters- Julie Nelson and her husband Joe of Pensacola, Florida and Patricia Houseman of Maryon, Illinois, two sisters- Jenny Molter of Youngstown, Ohio, and Evelyn Stross of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a special nephew Lance Molter of Humberg, Ohio, and several other nieces and nephews also survive.

HUTCHENS, Joseph
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Joseph Elijah Hutchens of 1120 Forest Hill Drive, High Point, N.C., died unexpectedly on January 14, while driving from his residence in Fort Myers, Fla. to High Point.
He was born August 27, 1935, the fourth son of George E. and Elizabeth L. Hutchens, founders of National Food Stores, which was later renamed Big Bear Supermarkets and then Food World Stores, which merged with Harris-Teeter Supermarkets in 1984. He attended The McCallie School, Oxford Academy, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and subsequently joined the family business. He served as President and Chairman of the Board of Food World and later as Vice-President of Harris-Teeter.
Joe served his community in many different capacities, including membership in The High Point Rotary Club, a member of the boards of several local charities, President of the local chapter of the UNC Educational Foundation, and a member of the local Board of Directors of BB&T.
An avid and accomplished golfer, he was a member of High Point Country Club, Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Myers, and Linville Ridge Country Club in Linville, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Elizabeth Burton Hutchens, a sister, Sarah Hutchens Brinson, and three brothers: George W., Robert L., and John G. Hutchens.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia McKinnon Hutchens, and three children: Joseph Edward Hutchens of Matthews, N.C., Elizabeth Hutchens Sullivan (Mrs. William Charles Sullivan, Jr.) of Charleston, S.C. and Amanda Hutchens Williams (Mrs. Thomas Anderson Williams) of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Elizabeth Carolyn Hutchens, Christopher Edward Hutchens, Charles Burton Sullivan, and Lindley Burton Williams, two step-grandchildren, Barbara Anderson Williams and John Arrington Williams, II, and by his sister, Mary Jane Hutchens Souweine (Mrs. Jean Souweine) of Pinehurst, N.C.
The funeral will be held at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, officiated by the Rev. Joe Blankinship. Visitation will also be at Forest Hills from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16th. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church (836 W. Lexington Ave., High Point, N.C. 27262) or a charity of the donor's choice.

MCAULIFFE, Virgi
Virgi Clear McAuliffe, 80, died Saturday, January 12, 2002, at her home in Charleston, S.C. Born March 22, 1921, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Dr. James T. and Matilda E. Clear (nee Wuest). Educated in Cincinnati's schools she graduated from St. Catherine's, Summit Country Day School, and earned a BA degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph on the Ohio. Mrs. McAuliffe was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Charleston for 50 years. Her husband John V. McAuliffe, Jr., a former Charleston businessman, and brother Dr. James J. Clear preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, John V. McAuliffe, III, Charleston, S.C.; daughter Mary Malloy Gates, Louisville, Ky.; two grandchildren, Jacqui Gates and Joseph Gates, both of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Julie Jacob, Patricia Wehremeyer and Ruth Deye, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; and sister-in-law, Julie Malloy Clear, Fla. A Mass of Christian Liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 17, 2002, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. A vigil service will begin at 6 p.m., with visitation to follow until 8 p.m., at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St., Charleston, S.C.
