GUESS, Gladys
Gladys Poole Guess died late Thursday night, January 24, at her home in Summerville, S.C. She is predeceased by Jeriel T. Guess, Sr., her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her sons Jeriel T. Guess, Jr., and his wife Linda of San Antonio, Texas; Michael W. Guess and his wife Lynda of Lancaster, S.C.; Dr. Frank Mitchell Guess and his wife Margo of Knoxville, Tenn.; Keith A. Guess and his wife CB of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Katherine Guess of Maryville, Tenn.; James Olin Guess of San Antonio, Texas; Lydia Guess of Lancaster, S.C.; Meg Guess and Julia Guess of Summerville, S.C.; and numerous nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by her brother, Olin Poole of Columbia, S.C., and her sister, Almira Poole Wiles of Salley, S.C.
She was born in 1922 in Perry, S.C., the daughter of the late Mitchell Erwin Poole and Julia Whetstone Poole. She graduated from Salley High School and the State Medical College of South Carolina. She served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War II.
She was an active member of Summerville Baptist Church and an avid gardener. She was a retired registered nurse from the Dorchester County Hospital and the South Carolina Coastal Center - Live Oak Facility.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., on Saturday, January 26, at Summerville Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. before the service. The family will also receive friends after the service at the church. Graveside services will be held Sunday, January 27, at 2 p.m. at Clinton United Methodist Church in Salley, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Library Fund or the Building Fund at Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Ave., Summerville, S.C. 29483; the James H. ABBEVILLE - Charles W. Wardlaw, Jr., 49, of 120 Harrisburg St., husband of Veretha Hill-Wardlaw, died Friday, January 25, 2002, at an Abbeville hospital.Born in Abbeville, he was a son of Charles W. Wardlaw and Janie Wardlaw. He was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church and an alumnus of J.S. Wright High School, Class of 1970. He was also a graduate of Forest College.Survivors include his wife of the home, and his parents, of Abbeville; two sons, Brandon Wardlaw of the home and Charles W. Wardlaw, III, of Orangeburg; two brothers, James Andy Wardlaw and Vernon Dennis, both of Abbeville; and two sisters, Donna W. Reese of Lancaster and Kimberly Wardlaw of Columbia, S.C. Aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins; and other relatives and friends.Services are at 1p.m., Monday, at St. James A.M.E. Church, Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. James E. Thompson. BURLESON, Curtis
FLORENCE - Curtis R. Burleson, 85, of Florence, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, in Heritage Home of Florence. Born October 7, 1916, in Bakersville, N.C., he was the son of Thomas and Chesnie Burleson. He was the husband of the Vivian Hewitt Burleson.He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II, a member of Mackey Masonic Lodge #77, and was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason, March 29, 1954. he was also a member of the Eastern Star, Omar Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite and VFW Post 3181. He was the owner of Dixie Dream Motel in Dillon until he retired in 1977. He made his home in Florence since his retirement.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a step-daughter, Melle Sensibaugh, of Atlanta, Ga., brother, Cliff Burleson, of Bakersville, N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2002, in the CAIN-POSTON FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, by Rev. Dr. Roger K. Gullick and Rev. Tom Kellum. Interment will follow in Hewitt Cemetery.

S. Candice Bayles, 54, died Thursday, January 24, 2002 in Moncks Corner, S.C. Born July 30, 1947 in Germany she was the daughter of John and Christa Coleman (nee Irimgard). Mrs. Bayles was a real estate paralegal for attorney George Bishop. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and attended the Kingdom Hall in Goose Creek. She is survived by her husband Tommy Keith Bayles; parents: John and Christa Coleman, Roanoke, Va.; three daughters: Julie and her husband Louis Toschner, Cross, S.C.; Laurel Phelps, New Orleans, La.; and Kimberly Ann Shannon, Palestine, Tex.; and two grandchildren: Heather Nicole and April Renee Hegwood, both of Lexington, S.C. GERACI, Anthony
Anthony Thomas Salvatore Geraci, 67, of the Isle of Palms, S.C., died Friday, January 25, 2002. Born January 10, 1935, in New Haven, Conn., he was the son of Anthony and Mary Ann Geraci (nee Cappello). He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He founded I.D.E.A. (Industrial Design Engineering Associates) of Charleston. Tony had many talents and enjoyed playing acoustic bas both professionally and non-professionally. He was a former manager of Chuck Mangione. An avid golfer he played at Charleston Municipal Golf Course and more recently was a starter and ranger on the golf courses at Wild Dunes Resort. His interests also included memberships in the S.C. Poetry Society, Charleston Modern Poetry Group and the S.C. Writer's Group. Tony was a former board member of the Unitarian Church, Charleston, S.C. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Holy Trinity, Charleston, S.C. He is survived by his wife Angelica Kathryn Thevos, Isle of Palms, S.C.; three sons, John-Anthony Geraci Thevos, Isle of Palms, S.C., and Nick Anthony Geraci and Zachary James Geraci, both of Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, Samuel Geraci, Largo, Fla., Lawrence J. Samuel Brown "Trey" Sanders, III, 31, of Charleston a maintenance engineer with Gregory Poole Co. died Friday, January 18, 2002 at his residence. Trey was born February 26, 1970, in Charleston the son of S. Brown Sanders, Jr. and Lisa Annis LaRoche. He graduated from Middleton High School and enjoyed outdoor activities such as boating and sailing. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. After retiring in 1978 he moved to Georgetown. He was of the Southern Baptist faith and was a member of St. Albans Masonic Lodge No. 22 F&A.M. in Linden, Alabama.Surviving are: his wife, Christine L. LUCAS, Kae
Kae Lucas, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, wife of Warren J. Lucas died Thursday, January 24th at her residence. Born in Galveston, Tex. to the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis "Red" W. Weber. She was an author of children's stories, cookbooks, and military humor. She wrote and produced many musical shows for the U.S. Air Force and was also a consultant. She is survived by her husband, a son, Scott Lee Hays of Washington, S.C., two brothers, Lewis W. Weber of San Antonio, Tex., and Robert Weber of Dallas, Tex., one granddaughter, Jamie Kathryn Schulke. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Lynne Shulke. KISER, Leonard
WALTERBORO - Mr. Leonard Maxwell Kiser, 86, of 907 Hampton St., died Friday. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel of the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME with Dr. W. Steven Brown and Rev. Posey Belcher officiating. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery.Mr. Kiser was born in Colleton County, a son of the late John T. Kiser and Alta Mae Kiser Kiser. He was a South Carolina Highway Patrolman for 21 years before becoming a SLED Agent. He retired from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division as a Lieutenant after 22 years of service. He served during the terms of Governors J.E. Harley, Ransome J. Williams, George B. Timmerman, Ernest F. Hollings, Donald S. Russell, Robert McNair, John C. West, James B. Edwards, and Richard W. Riley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Association and was a member of First Baptist Church of Walterboro. He was an avid fisherman.Surviving are his wife, Alma Ramsey Kiser, daughters, Dianne J. Bell, Sandra J. Hill, and Katina L. Crosby, all of Walterboro and Rhonda J. Strickland of Lexington, a sister, Ruth Blocker of Walterboro, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two nieces, Betty Clark of Greenville and Kay Broxton of Beaufort, and his care-giver, Darryl Summers of Walterboro.Memorial contributions may be made to the South Carolina Troopers Association Scholarship Fund, 4961 Broad River Road, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Kenneth Laverne Dean, U.S. Army (Ret.), 72, of Summerville, widower of Barbara Lawrimore Dean, died Thursday at his residence.A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at 10 o'clock in Summerville Presbyterian Church. Burial, with military honors, will be held in Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, S.C. at 1 o'clock.Friends may call at James A. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army where he attained the rank of Sergeant before attending Officers Candidate School and received his commission. Lt. Col. Dean served in the Army for 24 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Army, he worked with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and as a warehouse manager with Georgia Pacific. He was a volunteer for Summerville Medical Center Emergency Room. McMillan and Grace Johnson McMillan. She was an independent owner/operator for Bridge Terminal Transport Trucking in Charleston. She is a member of First Baptist Church of John's Island.Surviving are her husband; her mother Grace J. McMillan of North Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Jenny McDaniel of James Island, S.C., and April Jeffords Davis and son-in-law Tre of John's Island, S.C.; one son, Teddy Jeffords and daughter-in-law Kylie of John's Island, S.C.; two sisters, Nancy Spindler and brother-in-law Jim of Charleston, S.C., Tammy Pancoski and brother-in-law Robert of Goose Creek, S.C.; two brothers, Ellis G. McMillan, Jr. and sister-in-law Mary of North Charleston, S.C., and Joe McMillan of Orangeburg, S.C.; three nieces, Sarah Clark, Lindsey and Abby Lee Pancoski. Mrs. Jeffords was preceded in death by her father, Ellis G. Sylbia Harbour Dawson, 88, died on the afternoon of Friday, January 25, 2002 in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Private services and inurnment in C&M Cemetery, Oak Hill, Ohio have been arranged at J. HENRY STUHR,INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL.Mrs. Dawson was born November 20, 1913 in Hurricane, W.Va. a daughter of Charles A. and Georgia Ellis Mynes. A mother of seven children, she was the widow of Edwin A. Dawson who died in 1971. Mrs. Dawson was a member of 5th Avenue Methodist Church, Huntington, W.Va.She is survived by her daughters, Janet Lou Tracy and Beverly Ann Elmore, both of Zanesville, Ohio; her son Damond C. Dawson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and her twin sons, Jerrill H. and Merrill H. Dawson of Robesonia, Pa. Ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Marvin E. Dawson, her daughter Lynda Sue Riffe and a granddaughter, Jennifer Dawson.
