PHILLIPS, JR., William
William Allen Phillips, 27, of St. Stephen, S.C. a former student at Trident Technical College, died Tuesday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon, March 15, 2002, in the Russellville Christian Church. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the ST. STEPHEN CHAPEL OF DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. this Thursday evening.
Mr. Phillips was born Oct. 9, 1974, in Moncks Corner, S.C. a son of William Allen Phillips and Linda Barrs Phillips. He was a member of the Russellville Christian Church. He was a graduate of Macedonia High School and attended Trident Technical College.
Surviving are, his parents of St. Stephen; and two brothers, John Paul Phillips of 29 Palms, CA, and Christopher Michael Phillips of St. Stephen.

VAUPEL, Katherine
Entered into eternal life on March 5, 2002, Katherine (Kitty) Muller Vaupel at her home in Cranford, New Jersey. Mrs. Vaupel was born and raised in Charleston S.C. the daughter of Otto J. Muller and Lillian Wulbern Muller. After graduating from the College of Charleston in 1932, she worked as a Laboratory Technician at the Medical College of Charleston. In 1944, she married Ernest Vaupel and lived in New Jersey and New York. After her husband's retirement in 1971, the couple moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1998, Mrs. Vaupel moved to Cranford, New Jersey to be near her family there. She was a life-long Lutheran and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charleston S.C. until after her marriage.
Mrs. Vaupel is pre-deceased by her husband, Ernest, and a sister, Rena K. Muller and four brothers, Otto J. Muller, J. Kruse Muller, John W. Muller and H. Lee Muller all from Charleston. She is survived by her son, Ernie and daughter Kathy Vaupel, two grandchildren, Dan and Kate, and from Charleston her nieces, Eleanor M. Crosby, Joanna Muller and Jan M. Goin, and nephews, Harry L. Muller and Eric Muller.
A private interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery on Thursday.

After Oxford, he returned to St. Davids, Cheraw. During the next few years, he and Rosa were active as camp leaders at both St. Christopher and Kanuga Episcopal Church camps. In 1953, he accepted a call to Holy Trinity in Clemson, South Carolina, and served as chaplain to the student body at Clemson College and as a teacher of philosophy. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Clemson Little Theater. In June 1958, he received his Master of Sacred Theology from the University of the South, Sewanee. He returned to active duty in the Army, serving as chaplain of the 8th Street Chapel in Fort Meade, Maryland. He received an Army Commendation Medal for that tour. Reverend Oliveros was sent to serve as chaplain in Korea.
Returning to civilian ministry in 1962, he was assigned to St. Francis,'s new church mission in Greenville, S.C. Fifteen years were spent successfully nurturing and expanding St. Francis, both in congregation strength overseeing the construction of a beautiful new church building.
Returning to the Low Country, he served in many parishes throughout the area, including St. James, James Island, St. Albans, Kingstree, The Church of the Epiphany, Eutawville, St. James, Santee, and the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul. He returned to St. Albans as chaplain to Episcopal students at The Citadel, a chapel he found as a student.
The re-opening of the Huguenot Church, Charleston, SC, which had been closed for thirty years except for once a year services, was one of Reverend Oliveros' proudest accomplishments. This newly vitalized church, under his guidance, has once again become a prominent Charleston church. He was named Pastor Emeritus.
During his retirement, he and Rosa produced the popular guidebook "Peoples and Steeples: a Walking Tour of Some Historic Churches in the Old City of Charleston."
He was a member and chaplain of many organizations: The French Huguenot Society of South Carolina, the First Families of South Carolina, the Society of Colonial Wars and the Agricultural Society of South Charleston and a life member of the South Carolina Society, which was founded by a Poinsett ancestor. He also belonged to the New England Society, St. Davids Society, St. Johns Hunting Club and the Carolina Yacht Club.
In 1996, he married Elizabeth LaRoche Bailey, widow of Thomas Constantine Bailey. His stepchildren are Mary LaRoche Bailey Maiorano, Helen Whitridge Bailey Appleton and Elizabeth Seabrook Bailey Cunningham.
The Reverend Oliveros is survived by his wife, Bess, his children by his first wife, Rosa Burnet Oliveros of Houston, Texas, Carolina Izlar Oliveros King and Robert Lovell Oliveros, Jr., both of Charleston, his grandchildren, Rosa Georgiana Oliveros Lange and Evelyn Diane Burnet St. Lawrence of Houston, Texas, Kristen Leah McElrath of New York City, and his great-grandchildren, Eleanor Burnet Rosaire, Carol Gwyn Rosaire IV and Drew Bryan Pruitt, all of Houston.
The Reverend Oliveros was a life-long member of St. Philips Episcopal Church in Charleston. A service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, March 15, at

French Huguenot Church
The Reverend Robert Lovell Oliveros, Episcopal Priest, entered into eternal life on March 12, 2002. He was born on February 8, 1920 in Charleston, South Carolina, the only child of Lovell Lott Oliveros and Evelyn Elizabeth Kenan Oliveros. Active as a youth in the Episcopal Church, he also enjoyed sailing, was a popular dancer and singer, and began a life-long involvement with amateur dramatics. He helped found the St. Albans Episcopal Chapel, was Company Commander, News Editor of The Bulldog and Editor in Chief of The Gideon. He was an Honor Graduate.
After graduation from the Citadel in 1941, he was called to active duty. He first command was a platoon of the 54th Coastal Artillery Unit in California. Assigned to Camp Stewart, Georgia, he commanded the 8th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group and was soon promoted to Captain.
In February 1943, he married Rosa Richards Burnet at St. Philips Church. Until her death in 1994, they shared a devotion to God, a passion for Charleston and Low Country, an interest in genealogy and travel, and a love of family. Their union produced three children, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
In 1943, he went ashore at Salerno and participated in one of the major battles of the Italian campaign. As Operations Officer for the Eighth Army 2nd Corps, he received an Award of Merit Medal with the following comments: "For meritorious service in combat from 11th May 1944 to 10th June 1944 in Italy. As S-3 of an anti-aircraft utility group, Captain Oliveros displayed outstanding ability and devotion to duty in coordinating the movements of anti-aircraft artillery protecting troops in their crossing of the Garigliano River and in their continued pursuit of the enemy through Rome." He also participated in the Naples-Foggia Campaign and the Rome-Arno campaign. He was promoted to Major on December 19, 1944, and was awarded the Bronze Star. From Marseilles he continued with the Central European and the Rhineland Campaigns.
After the war, he entered the School of Theology, University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1949. He served his deaconate at St. Davids Church in Cheraw, South Carolina, where he was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1950. Later that same year he took a sabbatical to do post-graduate studies at Oxford University. In England, he served as chaplain to an RAF unit and as vicar to a parish in Nuneham Courtenay.

BORDEN, James
James T. Borden, Jr., 74, died on Monday, March 11, 2002 in Claxton, GA. Mr. Borden was a native of Roaton, Honduras and formerly resided in Charleston, SC. He was retired as a Chief Engineer from the Merchant Marines after 50 years service and a Veteran Staff Sgt. of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Johns Island Masonic Lodge. He was predeceased by his parents, James T. and Drusilla E. Borden, his wife, Dorothy Summers Borden and infant daughter, Robin Annette Borden. He was a Catholic. He is survived by three sons, William Lawrence Borden (Beth), of James Island, SC, Garylee Summers Borden of Jacksonville, FL., and John Britton Borden of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Dr. Saxon Delano Borden of Houston, TX and Capt. William Austin Borden of Marathon, FL; and sisters Lynn B. Jones of French Harbor, Honduras Reina Borden, Drusilla Blair, Kay Ferrez, Terry LaBoy and Maxine Cancilla; four grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Susie Carter Edgerton, 90, of Charleston died Thursday, March 14th. Born in Aiken, S.C. to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Webb Edgerton. Ms. Edgerton worked for many years for the American Red Cross in the Disaster Relief program. She is survived by two nephews, Claude Carr of Chicago, Ill., and Everett William Edgerton, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Jacksonville, Fla. Dudley J. Frierson, 75, of Johns Island died Thursday, March 14th at a local hospital. Born in Manning, S.C. to the late George Allen and Ollie David Frierson. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Frierson of Johns Island, two sons, Danny and George Frierson of Johns Island, one daughter, Carolyn Frierson of Johns Island, one brother, Eugene Frierson of Walterboro, S.C., and two sisters, Thelma Crowe and Virgil Frierson both of Summerville. DRIGGERS, Arthur
Arthur Lawrence "Slim" Driggers, 86, of 2128 S. Live Oak Dr., Moncks Corner, S.C., a retired carpenter at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station, died Wednesday in a Summerville hospital.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2002, in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., this Friday evening.
Mr. Driggers was born April 25, 1915, in Moncks Corner, S.C., a son of Lawrence and Martha Driggers. He is the widower of Aleitha D. "Toolie" Driggers. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church and Kelly's Hunting Club.
Survivors are, three sons, Harlan Driggers of Moncks Corner, and Norman Driggers and Sinclair Driggers, both of Summerville; and 13 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
